Given that the company makes the hottest selling product this Christmas season, it's a pretty safe bet they are going to have a good quarter. The only question is, how good? Taipei Times: Apple will rule notebook roost: study
CENTER STAGE: Apple Computer Inc, buoyed by the iPod effect and its new range of stylish, light notebook models, is set to take control of that market, researchers predict
By Jason Tan
STAFF REPORTER
Monday, Dec 19, 200
Among all brand-name notebook-computer makers, Apple Computer Inc is set to take center stage next year, mainly bolstered by its new light-weight models as well as the iPod effect, a recent study found.
Apple is projected to ship 3.27 million notebook computers worldwide next year, an increase of 42 percent compared to 2.29 million units this year, according to study results released by the Topology Research Institute (???????).
This translates to Apple's market share in the worldwide notebook market rising to 4.7 percent from 3.9 percent this year.
"Compared to other makers which will post only moderate growth, Apple's performance is significant and worth paying attention to," Topology analyst Simon Yang (???) said.
According to Yang, Apple notebooks are poised to grab consumers' attention next year as the company will unveil light-weight models with a stylish design aimed at luring female users.
Compared to its current bulky and older models, the upcoming Apple lineup will include 12-inch notebooks weighing in at 1.5kg as well as 14-inch models below 2kg, he said.
In addition, as the iPod digital-music-player series have been selling like hot cakes because of the large storage size they offer and their fashionable exterior, the "fondness effect" will be passed on to Apple notebooks, he said.
On the other hand, he said, NEC Computer Corp's shrinking market share might serve as a warning to Apple.
The research firm estimates that NEC's notebook shipments will drop to 2.64 million units from 2.54 million units, translating to a market-share decline of 0.5 percentage points to 3.8 percent next year.
"NEC has been putting too much emphasis on the Japanese market, prompting it to lose market share elsewhere and it lacks a niche market to compete with other aggressive players," Yang said.
Meanwhile, Dell Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co, Toshiba Corp, Acer Inc as well as Lenovo Group Ltd (??) are expected to maintain their respective positions as the world's top-five notebook makers next year, according to the Taipei-based research house.
The market shares of HP, Acer and Lenovo will be up marginally, with Dell and Toshiba showing a slight decline, it said.
"Among the top five, Lenovo will still face a setback in other markets even though its products are highly accepted in China. It needs to do more to assure users of the product quality after acquiring IBM Corp's PC business," Yang said.
Overall, global notebook shipments next year will grow by 17.8 percent to reach 69.5 million units, mainly driven by lower pricings and the new Intel dual-core platform, which is due to be launched next month.
This estimate is similar to the figures given by Market Intelligence Center (??????), another local market researcher.
MIC forecast in October that worldwide notebook shipments next year will hit 71.2 million units, demonstrating a healthy growth of 19.8 percent.
It said that, combined with the volume of desktop computers, which will reach 135 million units, the total shipments of all personal computers will surpass the 200 million mark for the first time.

His leadership has been good for Apple and its shareholders.

Apple iPod Pricing
By Katie Marsal
Published: 04:00 PM EST
Apple Computer's massive iPod shipment volume is allowing it to produce digital music players at a cost far below its competitors, and thus will remain atop the digital music player market for years, says one analyst.
Gene Munster, an analyst at PiperJaffray, recently surveyed a broad number of digital music players to see if any competitors can compete with Apple's iPod based on price.
The study looked at 20GB and 30GB players from device makers: Creative, iRiver, Samsung, and Sony. "Apple's 30GB iPod provides the lowest cost per gigabyte at $10, followed by Creative's Zen Vision:M at $11," Munster wrote in a research note. "It should be noted though that the Zen Vision:M has a few more features (i.e., personal organizer, recorder, more song storage, more hours of video, and an FM tuner) than the iPod."
The analyst al.so noted that the only other video capable devices were from Samsung and iRiver, and cost between $15-$25 per gigabyte, while those without video capabilities cost at least $11 per gigabyte.
Looking closer at device maker Creative, Munster said he was impressed by the features of its new Zen Vision:M, a knock-off of Apple's 30GB video iPod. However, the analyst believes the key question was: "Will Creative be able to pack these features into a 30GB device and price it below an iPod?"
"The answer is no," Munster said, noting that the device is $329.99, $30 (10%) higher than the price of Apple's 30GB iPod. Although, the iPod's competitors often have similar, if not broader, feature sets than the iPod, none have proven they compete in the two key areas of user interface and "cool" factor," he said.
"We believe that non-iPod devices must compete on price to gain adoption, but Apple has such massive relative shipment volume with the iPod that other MP3 player manufacturers are not able to replicate the economies of scale achieved by Apple," Munster added. "We believe this reality will allow Apple to sell iPods at the lowest prices in the market, thus retaining the iPod's pole position for years."
PiperJaffray maintains an "Outperform" rating on Apple shares with a target price of $79.

Are any of the current Cell Phone players making any money with music downloads ? I've talked to many people who complain about their Cell Phones having way to many features and get really irritated when they cannot find a basic cellphone without all these superflous features many will never need or use. Could you imagine relying on your Cellphone for important things like addresses and phone numbers of clients and then have it go missing or stolen. Is their an easy way to back up that important info ? I would think that Apple would either morf the iPod or an ultralight laptop into a communication device of some sort ? I wouldn't count on an iPhone.

That statements details the two different approaches AAPL and Microsoft have in delivering product and services.
"........Increasingly, individuals choose products and services that are highly-personalized, focused on the end-to-end experience delivered by that technology. Products must deliver a seamless experience, one in which all the technology in your life 'just works' and can work together, on your behalf, under your control. This means designs centered on an intentional fusion of internet-based services with software, and sometimes even hardware, to deliver meaningful experiences and solutions with a level of seamless design and use that couldn't be achieved without such a holistic approach."
With the exception of iTunes/iPod Apple doesn't always succeed in this approach but they do make a very honest effort at it.

Leaked MSFT memo's from The Wallstreet Journal
Excerpts From Gates Email,
Ozzie Memo on Internet Push
November 9, 2005 6:54 a.m.
Below are excerpts from an Oct. 30 email from Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and from a memo by Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's chief technology officer, discussing how the software giant needs to better address technologies and trends on the Internet:
From Bill Gates's introduction to Ray Ozzie's memo:
"Today the opportunity is to utilize the Internet to make software far more powerful by incorporating a services model."
"However, to lead we need to do far more. … We will build our strategies around Internet services."
"Steve [Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive] and I recently expanded Ray Ozzie's role as CTO to include leading our services strategy across three divisions. We did this because we believe our services challenges and opportunities will impact most everything we do."
"The next sea change is upon us. We must recognize this change as an opportunity and take our offerings to the next level, compete in a manner commensurate with our industry responsibilities, and utilize our assets and our broad reach to reshape our business for the benefit of the users of our products, our customers, our partners and ourselves."
From Ray Ozzie's memo:
"Most challenging and promising to our business, though, is that a new business model has emerged in the form of advertising-supported services and software. The model has the potential to fundamentally impact how we and other developers build, deliver and monetize innovations."
"Our products have embraced the Internet in many amazing ways. … But for all our great progress, our efforts have not always led to the degree that perhaps they could have."
"Even beyond our large competitors, tremendous software-and-services activity is occurring within startups and at the grassroots level."
"In some cases, it may be possible for one to obtain more (software) revenue through the advertising model than through a traditional licensing model."
Key Tenets
Today there are three key tenets that are driving fundamental shifts in the landscape - all of which are related in some way to services. It's key to embrace these tenets within the context of our products and services.
The power of the advertising-supported economic model.
Online advertising has emerged as a significant new means by which to directly and indirectly fund the creation and delivery of software and services. In some cases, it may be possible for one to obtain more revenue through the advertising model than through a traditional licensing model. Only in its earliest stages, no one yet knows the limits of what categories of hardware, software and services, in what markets, will ultimately be funded through this model. And no one yet knows how much of the world's online advertising revenues should or will flow to large software and service providers, medium sized or tail providers, or even users themselves.
The effectiveness of a new delivery and adoption model.
A grassroots technology adoption pattern has emerged on the internet largely in parallel to the classic methods of selling software to the enterprise. Products are now discovered through a combination of blogs, search keyword-based advertising, online product marketing and word-of-mouth. It's now expected that anything discovered can be sampled and experienced through self-service exploration and download. This is true not just for consumer products: even enterprise products now more often than not enter an organization through the internet-based research and trial of a business unit that understands a product's value.
Limited trial use, ad-monetized or free reduced-function use, subscription-based use, on-line activation, digital license management, automatic update, and other such concepts are now entering the vocabulary of any developer building products that wish to successfully utilize the web as a channel. Products must now embrace a "discover, learn, try, buy, recommend" cycle - sometimes with one of those phases being free, another ad-supported, and yet another being subscription-based. Grassroots adoption requires an end-to-end perspective related to product design. Products must be easily understood by the user upon trial, and useful out-of-the-box with little or no configuration or administrative intervention.
But enabling grassroots adoption is not just a product design issue. Today's web is fundamentally a self-service environment, and it is critical to design websites and product 'landing pages' with sophisticated closed-loop measurement and feedback systems. Even startups use such techniques in conjunction with pay-per-click advertisements. This ensures that the most effective website designs will be selected to attract discovery of products and services, help in research and learning, facilitate download, trial and purchase, and to enable individuals' self-help and making recommendations to others. Such systems can recognize and take advantage of opportunities to up-sell and cross-sell products to individuals, workgroups and businesses, and also act as a lead generation front-end for our sales force and for our partners.
The demand for compelling, integrated user experiences that "just work."
The PC has morphed into new form factors and new roles, and we increasingly have more than one in our lives - at work, at home, laptops, tablets, even in the living room. Cell phones have become ubiquitous. There are a myriad of handheld devices. Set-top boxes, PVRs and game consoles are changing what and how we watch television. Photos, music and voice communications are all rapidly going digital and being driven by software. Automobiles are on a path to become smart and connected. The emergence of the digital lifestyle that utilizes all these technologies is changing how we learn, play games, watch TV, communicate with friends and family, listen to music and share memories.
But the power of technology also brings with it a cost. For all the success of individual technologies, the array of technology in a person's life can be daunting. Increasingly, individuals choose products and services that are highly-personalized, focused on the end-to-end experience delivered by that technology. Products must deliver a seamless experience, one in which all the technology in your life 'just works' and can work together, on your behalf, under your control. This means designs centered on an intentional fusion of internet-based services with software, and sometimes even hardware, to deliver meaningful experiences and solutions with a level of seamless design and use that couldn't be achieved without such a holistic approach.
"As an outsider, I was repeatedly impressed and awed over the years by how this company's talent has swarmed to effectively respond to huge business challenges and transitions. That said, even when we've been solidly in pursuit of a common vision, our end-to-end execution of key scenarios has often been uneven - in large part because of the complexity of doing such substantial undertakings."
"We cannot allow the seams in our organization, or our methods of making decisions, show through in our products."
"We're in a tremendous position to succeed, but doing so will require your belief, creativity, support, leadership, follower-ship and action."
"I very much look forward to embarking on this journey with all of you."
-Alt ... Epilogue:
Its the end of 2005 and MSFT has finally figured out that their economic model and stratergies are all wrong. That their company doesn't deliver integrated user experiences that "just work." Man, these guys are really slow on the uptake. Msft has seen better days ..... it all downhill from here.

Macsimum Notes
Although I've done my best at breaking down all three of Apple's patents separately, there's simply no way to cover every last detail worth noting in a timely way. If you're a sleuth and find that unique point missed in these reports, then be my guest in presenting it below for everyone's benefit.
Hmm, on November 15, KT Launched Commercial WiBro Services in Korea, indicative of Mobile WiMAX Technology Potential-- and late Wednesday Om Malik's blog referenced information about the IEEE standards body approving the 802.16e standard. Yes, things are moving along quite nicely on the wireless over-the-air front indeed.
Apple already has a standing patent on future wireless--over-the-air capabilities involving the iPod and other interesting applications. They also have a patent on a camera laptop. So when you add in RF with a track pad and additional buttons, you have to wonder what on earth Apple could have in store for us in the coming months and years.
Being that television was described as being a future feature in one of the aforementioned patents; I wonder if we'll be given an easy way to switch to live TV on a notebook with a simple click. Then again, it could be iTunes or taking an incoming phone call or iChat session. Will these buttons be programmable so that users' get to make those decisions? Could it allow a user to instantly switch from OS X to Linux? Questions, questions and more questions.
I'm sure that you have an idea or two on this, so let's hear it.

One of many 1394 Firewire over IP initiatives.

FireWire Group Developing Spec To Spur HDTV
By W. David Gardner Courtesy of TechWeb.com
The 1394 Trade Association has announced that it is developing a specification that will enable the IEEE 1394 standard, also known as Firewire, to deliver audio and video over coaxial cable. The trade association expects the use of "1394 over coax" to help spur the spread of HDTV.
The task group expects to complete a single "native 1394 over coax specification" built on the 1394 S400 physical layer device (PHY) coupled with an integrated interface to provide a single link for coax.
"Cable MSOs (operators) are looking for the optimal long-term solution and we believe that native 1394 over coax is the most cost effective way to deliver multiple streams of HD video with trick play over a single coax cable," said James Snider, the TA's executive director, in a statement.
Dick Davies, 1394 Trade Association spokesman, said the specification will enable video to be transmitted from set top boxes over coax to PCs and MPEG2 decoders in HDTV format.
"You have an FCC mandate to create all these new HDTVs and living room equipment that must have digital tuners," Davies said in an interview Monday. "The 1394 Trade Association is trying to get 1394 ports on set top boxes so consumers can use the technology. At 400 Mbps, coax makes it possible for cable operators to implement the highest quality hookup." Davies said the TA expects the new technology can begin to be implemented in 2006.
Davies said when the 1394 Trade Association realized cable operators preferred to use coax for HDTV, the TA focused on developing the specification. The 1394 Trade Association had been developing specs for both coax and CAT-5, but cable operators prefer to use coax because most of their customers are already fitted for coax. The coax spec will be upgradeable to 800 Mbps and is expected to represent the least costly and highest speed solution for audio-video delivery.
The 1394 coax task group is chaired by Hans van der Ven, a former executive at Royal Philips and Panasonic. Another task group now working on 1394 IP over isochronous channels is chaired by Oxford Semiconductor. It expects to unveil a tecnical bulletin on that specification by the end of this year.
The real-time spec is planned to enable the transport of IP packets with guaranteed Quality of Service in which data will be delivered within a guaranteed time period.
The 1394 Trade Association said it is working to ensure that its mechanisms will be compatible with other IP systems like the Digital Living Network and Residential Ethernet.

I'm very familiar with Verizon's FIOS initiative.
It's been a losing proposition from the beginning. It's a desperate attempt to shore up their shrinking wireline business. Next generation Wireless and satellite technologies will end up beating out cable and FIOS because it will be cheaper and more convienent to use. The wireline business is expensive to maintain and I expect a big shakeout in this industry over the next decade. Wireless broadband is the future and Apple and Intel are positioning themselves to take advantage of this. Neither Microsoft or Verizon has the vision to deliver such a system because they lack imagination and foresight. They cannot see beyond their next quarterly profit statements.
