the best thing to own is mineral interest, you get the gross and not the net

you also have to be careful of the operator when owning working interest, they like to "space program" their markup on parts and drilling. you could even take a loss if this happens

are you asking can they sell their working interest in 12 months? yes, you can sell your working interest one minute after you own it. i do it once a week if not more flipping deals. if you own the mineral rights you can sell all or part of them at any time as long as you have title. as the reserve depletes the value decreases but as long as you have a buyer and a seller anything can happen.

you are correct, and imo it does hurt not being able to buy through scottrade, my friends i had lined up to buy did not because they only use scottrade, i know for a fact they would have put 50k each in it.

oil wells also can produce 20-25 years while gas can produce for 30 years. gas will decline 50% after the first year with roughly an 8% decline per year

when you are invested in oil and gas, once a well starts producing a monthly check comes in, wells cost 1.3 million for oil and 2.4 million for gas. depends on the depth of the well also. you can get the api number for any well and it will tell reserves,depth and along with other stuff.

for what it's worth, there are major tax benefits for oil and gas that can be taken from year one.
