New Android smartphones must run 4.4 Kitkat, says leaked Google memo
#ANDROID KITKAT
Google forcing OEMs to launch Android smartphones with latest OS version (Image credit: Reuters)

Further strengthening the rumours that Google has instituted a new policy for OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to launch devices running the latest Android version, another leaked memo has surfaced. The leaked document claims that all new Android smartphones must come preinstalled with Android 4.4 KitKat, be it entry-level, mid-range or flagship devices.
According to a report by Mobile Bloom, the memo was sent by Google’s Android team to some major Android OEM partners.
According to them, the memo reads:
“Starting February 2014, Google will no longer approve GMS distribution on new Android products that ship older platform releases. Each platform release will have a ‘GMS approval window’ that typically closes nine months after the next Android platform release is publicly available.”
Any Android update is made up of two parts. The first is the AOSP, or the Android Open Source Platform while the other is the GMS (Google Mobile Services). GMS or Google Mobile Services include all Google apps and the Play store. To get GMS, the device has to pass a technical evaluation meeting certain requirements such as performance, screen resolution etc. Without GMS, the device will not get apps like Hangouts, Maps and so on.
A previously leaked document had revealed that Google plans to close down the window for older mobile iterations nine months after the new Android version is released. It is rumoured that the window to certify devices running Android 4.1 or below with Google Mobile Services expired on 1 February, this year. The report also pointed out that after 24 April 2014, manufacturers would not be allowed to launch devices running Android 4.2 and the same would apply for Android 4.3 starting 31 July 2014.
This may not be happy news for OEMs, especially the ones building budget or entry-level smartphones for emerging markets that usually run on an older OS version even after new versions of the OS are launched. For consumers however, it is definitely a win-win situation as they will get to lay their hands on the latest Android version as manufacturers will be compelled to push out updates quickly.
More & more investors will cut thru all the garbage thrown here & see the real deal...hugely undervalued.

Volume looks high to me...very high posting on weekend as well.
It's early on Monday u know...lol

I agree. We were running an older system & it was necessary or about to me required...ie. update was now needed if Google is now clamping down. It is what it is, so, let's get it done.
It's coming baby!

When will my phone get the Android 4.4 KitKat update: here is what we know
Posted: 28 Feb 2014, 02:22, by Victor H.Tags: Android+ Software updates+
Google has unveiled Android 4.4 KitKat as a fairly big update to the world’s most popular platform, but question remains: when will you be able to get it on your device? It’s a tricky one as always with Android, but we try to keep you up to date with the update schedule for different devices.
*We will be updating this post continuously as new information comes in.
Last in: AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S4 is now getting KitKat, as well as the T-Mobile and AT&T models of the HTC One. Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and 2013 Motorola Droid phones have also started getting KitKat, and now a bunch of older LG smartphones are rumored to skip some point updates and get updated straight to 4.4.
Last update: Mar - 17th - 2014.
The improvements in Android 4.4 KitKat come mostly under the hood. Google claims that it has made huge optimizations to the platform and its core apps, so even devices with 512MB of RAM (the overwhelming majority of Androids across the world are actually low-end devices with 512MB of RAM) can have a satisfactory, smooth Android experience.
The new Android 4.4 KitKat however still seems to be coming first and only to the top-shelf devices. Here is the list of phones we know will get the update, and we have added a timeframe for its arrival for the phones that we know. Some of the information comes straight from the manufacturer, and update info for others is just based on rumors, so we've tried to make it clear what is the case for each phone.
If you are wondering whether a device that is not on the list will get KitKat, let us say that chances are the manufacturer has either not yet announced plans for the update, or - sadly - the device will not get the updated.
With all this in mind, here is when Android 4.4 is coming to various devices:

I agree. Googles says go ahead, this could be done is a heart beat. I didn't get any of those super cheapies but very happy with my recent 8s. :)
NTEK
Always darkest before the light. NTEK knows the NP-1 is a winner & tons of sales to be executed once they give the go ahead. Updating it knowing what they have was probably a no BRAINER for them..especially since they are looking to buy back shares.
The sun will rise! :). Value investors all over NTEK now!
CONFIRMATION
Hi everyone, just confirming that I received this latter as well. I had submitted my question to NTEK & David Foley provided me an email with the letter from Aaron Taylor attached.
Big picture, I am extremely up beat & added shares yesterday. This will be a memorable blip on the chart when I look back a year from now as I am confident we will be in blue sky soon.
Ntek
This is the take home fool -"We have re-submitted the product for approval with Google using the 4.4 OS release. Once that is approved, we will ship out the remainder of the back-orders. "
ntek
Nice!!! I added yesterday & feeling very good about it as well. NP-1 fine tuning is smart! Everyone is wound up about the day to day but is is coming & big picture, the PPS is a major steal as we will see a major recovery with the NP-1 release.
