didn't amd just dump some mips based business?
ati just licensed for soc

but it was a good tgif giggle!

they could always sell off ati!
gb
i remember reading somewhere on the intel site that the next gen mobile platform was definitely targeted for a flash accelerator for the hdd. vista has support built in for this.
iirc it was also interesting for desktop use as well.
perhaps a little browsing on the intel site later...
gb
one important point:
intel didn't introduce 65nm this year. they began production last year.
this approach of process intro then arch intro on alternate years is a significant risk reducer.
gb
Anyone seen any reviews of the G965 chipset?
Other than groo's...
gb
while it's become fashionable to bash p4, it seems to have escaped notice that it's now on 65nm, only 75 or so watts, performs just fine for the mid to lowend and is in high volume production.
not a bad competitive tool to have while conroe fills in at the top and works its way down.
gb
check you mb spec to see if it has an pata port. if not you'll either need to get a tailgate for the dvd drive to run it from sata or get a pci addin card with a pata port on it.
have fun!!
gb (who built this pc in '99 while still at intel...)
the duopoly fantasy...
i'm seeing an increasing level of use of the term duopoly to express the state of competition between intel and amd. mostly it's used in the context of some future state of the market accompanied by some expectation that intel will "come to its senses" and stop "overproducing and underpricing" cpus.
i don't think this is going to happen.
i think intel will continue to aggressively convert and ramp their 65nm process fabs. underutilization charges are a major no-no.
amd, when combined with ati, has the potential to be a much more dangerous competitor if they can pull of the organizational and silicon integration. now is not the time to ease off on the competitve front.
as a consequence i expect lots of margin pressure on both companies well into '07 as intel presses its current capacity, process and now architecture advantages to the max.
if duopoly happens (by some definition) it won't be because intel eased off.
gb
just wait a couple of more weeks for the production of cwm to crank high enough to start approximating demand and make a significant presence in the major oem lines.
that's the point at which historically intel turns on the marketing music.
martian heads will begin exploding all over the place...

how are you liking the Dell 24" display?
notice any banding?
you're killing me!
tnx
gb
pata is parallel ata and has the usual wide grey ribbon cable.
sata is serial ata and the cable is much smaller. it looks like the one going to the hard drive.
gb
did the optical drive come as pata or sata?
if sata did it seem to have a little tailgate board or was it native?
tnx

some more thoughts about vista and g965...
much to the dismay of the inq, intel has grown its market share based on integrated graphics to a surprising level. all based on what inq habitually claims is pathetic performance.
intel has known for quite some time what the feature set of vista would be and i'm sure has had negotiations with msft about what is acceptable performance. msft in spite of wanting to deliver some whizzy new interface isn't going to ignore nearly half of the machines likely to be shipped with vista. the oems have gotten very used to the economics of shipping integrated graphics and aren't going to suddenly stop doing that.
so i'm guessing that the g965 will do just fine on vista for a majority of the users. and of course, just as today, some will pay extra for additional graphics capability.
and the inq will continue to p*** and moan...
gb
groo vs g965
interesting that inq's groo has taken up a crusade against the 965. seems he can't kick around the cpu anymore so he's taken a new target.
i wonder what his standard of measurement is other than "blows chunks." a particularly childish characterization, that.
i also wonder if it turns out to be quite useful for vista but perhaps not the world's best gaming engine whether he'll apologize (<0.1), backoff (<0.2) or find something else to crap on intel for (>1.0).
gb
i often don't take time to read the poster's name until i've read the text of the post. with ng i don't even need to look up. his posts are really "consistent."
gb
mb makers don't buy desktop cpus. they only buy chipsets. systems builders buy cpus.
gb
i went to the page and it appears to be from 2003...
gb
so we know they didn't exactly rush out their ddr2 implementation and obviously have a new socket with presumably better ac/dc characteristics.
agree on the boutique non-registered memory issue.
shouldn't it have performed better? i wonder what went wrong?
or perhaps the early testers are misconfiguring something somewhere.
gb
i prefer to call it cwm, after country western music. made the martians head explode in "mars attacks."
i expect similar results for amd investors after a quarter or two.
gb
seems a lot of folks are forgetting that intel 65nm wafer starts crossed over 90nm in q2, iirc.
and mobile and desktop parts were flowing from those lines in quantity before cmw qualified.
as for 4x4 perhaps someone who thinks highly of this idea could share target markets and the expectations for sales this platform might generate. i would characterize it as suitable only for trust fund brats.
gb
Just spent some time with the calculator figuring out sizes from the aspect ratios and ppi.
2407 gives 1920x1200 for 20.35w x 12.72h and 94ppi, 258sqin
2007 gives 1600x1200 for 16.08w x 12.06h and 99.5ppi, 194sqin
1907 gives 1280x1024 for 14.83w x 11.87h and 86.3ppi, 176sqin
From this I can see that the 24" wide screen doesn't give up any vertical height to the 20" and it spreads the same 1200 lines over a bit more space vertically as well. Good for 60yr old eyes.
The wide format is appealing since this will also get used to watch DVDs.
Price isn't that important since it will be used for several years.
Now I just need to see availability on a G965 Conroe system to go with it!
gb
mmoy
iirc you were considering a dell 2407. i'm considering one as well. do you happen to know how the vertical dimension compares to a 20" 16x12 format?
tnx
gb
Is today's Conroe launch going to be webcast? Any link?

i was relatively cool that day and the room was actually chilly.
the guy who was "on the stand" had a shirt that looked like a garden hose was turned on him by the end of the hour.
i was freaked...
gb
having personally sat through lots of annual legal training while at intel i can say with that the amd allegations of illegal dealing are far removed from reality.
i once watched a mock trial where dunlop grilled a senior manager at one of our trainings to show what it would be like to be on the stand and it gave new meaning to suspension of disbelief. dunlop twisted and turned every statement by the "witness" just as an opposing counsel might and the guy was really shaken. all of the other managers were really glad they weren't in the chair.
and anyone suspecting improper behavior is asked to report it so that another round of training can occur. i called for two such trainings during my career as a manager.
intel takes legal training very seriously. and staying well back from the "line" was always emphasized.
gb
btw, the "break the monopoly" phrase was used over and over in the conf call and all the interviews. they really harped on it. so much so that it must have been part of the exec briefing preparation.
it also is likely to be an issue in the lawsuit since by their own admission they were ill prepared to compete.
sorta funny
gb
when i was on the inside i saw enough to know that if intel takes the handcuffs off the graphics group they have what it takes to be a leader in graphics. there's no shortage of smart people and good ideas there.
with integrated graphics they're held back to keep the price down. if they decide to do discrete there should be no such problem. and unlike amd/ati there's no big issue which whether to use soi and redesign the chip or design a brand new bulk process.
with amd taking ati out (presumably) i think the handcuffs are likely to come off since they'll no longer be worried about complaints by ati and nvidia to the ftc.
just my now retired opinion...
gb
wbmw: keep us up to date on your various selections for your homebrew pc.
tnx
gb
mmoy
what bugs you about wmce? i haven't looked at it closely but am considering a new confuser.
tnx
gb
just to be clear the margins for ati chipsets for intel may be small primarily since they are low end chipsets to begin with. i don't think intel had anything to do with their pricing however.
intel has nothing to say about what ati sells their graphics chips for. that's between ati and their customers.
nor does intel say what nvidia grahipcs chips sell for.
gb
of course if L2 wasn't important why was it previously larger?
poor simulation ability on amd's part? marketing panache of big cache can't be it because it wasn't a whopper in the first place.
some new whizzy in the am2 memory controller when combined with ddr2 that offsets the cache size reduction?
gb
i'm not a finance guy. has anyone had a chance to add up the balance sheets of amd and ati including the shareholder payout and the increased debt and amd share count to see what the results are?
i see that ati has about 1.3B in cash and short term assets that partially offsets amd's payout.
any other "ponies in the pile?"
gb
so amd just shot their cash wad, diluted their stock and got another 2.5B of debt.
all at a time where their 65nm process is late (or worse) and with a set of products that need substantial refreshing.
where does the money come to build fabs?
gb
Often the phrase "family and personal reasons" are used as euphemisms.
Doubtful in either of these cases. Both are highly regarded.
gb
wanna
they probably are but in practice when you put all the things into a pc to hit a use model and then try to hit a price integrated graphics might start to look pretty compelling.
i also think the commercial market is heavily integrated graphics. unless it's a bonafide workstation there really hasn't been much motivation that i'm aware of to offer anything more.
gb
OTOH, if Intel is successful in their attempt to define ViiV and vPro as Intel CPU and Intel chipset, increasingly with integrated graphics, where does that leave ATi?
AMD may have seen a challenge in their design discussions with OEMs related to ViiV and vPro that caused them to rethink their lack of control of more elements of the platform. As someone else mentioned Dell may have made it a precondition for accepting AMD for client platforms.
ATI may have seen a disruption in their design win flow as well.
If the Intel side dries up for the gfx vendors then the first one to fully side with AMD locks out the other.
This is pure speculation on my part. I retired from Intel in 2000.
gb
what's GV??
tnx
gb
i'm wondering if a lot of that expansion might have been due to convertible bonds. holders figuring it's best to get out while the getting is good?
gb
