Loads of Possible 'Dead of Night' Casting
Tuesday, March 24, 2009
By: MrDisgusting
According to the IMDB (a very untrustworthy source), Kyle Russell Clements, James Hébert, Marco St. John, Dan Braverman, Kimberly Whalen and Courtney J. Clark will all be joining the previously announced Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington in the Kevin Munroe directed Dead of Night, the live-action adaptation of 'Dylan Dog" that's currently filming in New Orleans, Louisiana. Watch for official confirmation as it comes in. In the film Dylan Dog (Routh) is forced back into his nightmare investigations after he is approached by a woman who claims to have seen her father brutally murdered by a mysterious creature. With his street smart, his gun and a set of paranormal weapons, Dylan attempts to restore order both above and below ground.

Taye Diggs Joins ‘Dead Of Night’ Cast, Goes Vampiric For ‘Dylan Dog’ Adaptation?
Published by Silas Lesnick on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 5:38 pm.
Though not 100-percent official yet, it’s looking like Taye Diggs will be taking an undead approach to acting, starring as the main villain in the “Dylan Dog” comic book series adaptation, titled “Dead of Night.”
Shocktilyoudrop reports that Diggs will be joining the cast opposite “Superman Returns” actor Brandon Routh, and will play the role of a vampire in the big-screen adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi’s Italian comic book series.
The “Dylan Dog” series began in the late 1980s, and dealt with all manner of otherworldly horror creatures. One story was previously adapted (albeit somewhat loosely) as the 1994 film “Dellamorte Dellamore” (released in the US as “Cemetery Man”), but this new, unconnected adaptation is set to star Routh as Dylan Dog himself and Sam Huntington as his sidekick.
Helming the project is Kevin Munroe, best known for directing the 2007 animated “TMNT” with production setting up in New Orleans and cameras ready to roll any day now.
With the Peter Jackson/Steven Spielberg “Tintin” trilogy moving steadily ahead and Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” already a fan-favorite based on the casting alone, it’s looking as if Hollywood is embracing comic books on both an international and indie level these days. Surely that won’t mean an end to the superhero blockbusters we know and love, but the balance is starting to look pretty amazing.
Since “Dead of Night” should be crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s as it gets the full cast locked , expect more announcements (including official word on Diggs) in the immediate future.
Who else would you like to see join the “Dylan Dog” film universe? What other indie gems would like to see come to the big screen? Share your thoughts below!

OT:'Nonstop' goes forward at DreamWorks
Patrick Tatopoulos attached to direct sci-fi actioner

DreamWorks has abducted the sci-fi action thriller "Nonstop" from scribe Michael Gilvary. "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" helmer Patrick Tatopoulos is attached to direct, and Len Wiseman is producing.
ICM, which reps all threee, packaged the project.
The original story line follows the passengers of Flight 209 after their plane is mysteriously abducted by an alien ship.
The trio went out with the package last week. DreamWorks execs Mark Sourian and Jonathan Eirich are overseeing for the studio.
Wiseman directed "Underworld," "Underworld: Evolution" and "Live Free or Die Hard." He is also attached to direct "Motorcade" and "Atlantis Rising" for DreamWorks.
Tatopoulos has long been a production and creature designer on movies such as "Godzilla," "I, Robot," "Live Free or Die Hard" and the "Underworld" films.
Gilvary, who is also repped by Alison Rosenzweig Films, penned the script for "Greta" and has "Devil

Dead of Night Snags its Vamp - Taye Diggs
Brandon Routh Dead of Night Dylan Dog Kevin Munroe Taye Diggs
It was around November of last year when we last talked about Dead of Night, the live action adaptation of the Dylan Dog Italian comic book series starring Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington as the film's heroes. Now it's time to introduce you to one of the flick's big bads ...
Shock Till You Drop nailed the exclusive that "Grey's Anatomy" star, Taye Diggs has signed on to play the leader of the vampires.
But it wont be just vampires haunting Dead of Nights streets ... "We've got werewolves, zombies and vampires - and a few sub-categories of those," director Kevin Munroe told STYD.
Handling the creature F/X for the film will be the sickos (and I mean that in the most loving way imginable) at Drac Sudios and filming is taking place in now the New Orleans area.
Dylan Dog (Routh) is forced back into his nightmare investigations after he is approached by a woman who claims to have seen her father brutally murdered by a mysterious creature. With his street smart, his gun and a set of paranormal weapons, Dylan attempts to restore order both above and below ground.

OT: 3-D Takes a Giant Leap Into the Future
'Monsters vs. Aliens,' Out Next Week, Marks Beginning of New Age for 3-D Movies
By Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY
March 21, 2009
Hollywood is looking at the future through tinted plastic glasses.
Photo: Movie still: Monsters vs. Aliens
Ginormica (REESE WITHERSPOON) is introduced to The Missing Link (WILL ARNETT) in DreamWorks Animation's "Monsters vs. Aliens."
(Courtesy Paramount Pictures)
"My Bloody Valentine," "Coraline" and the Jonas Brothers concert film were just warm-up acts. The attack of the 3-D movie revival begins in earnest next Friday when "Monsters vs. Aliens," the latest computer-animated funhouse from DreamWorks, is launched into theaters.
At least 12 other titles will follow this year, including such milestones as Up, Pixar's first foray in the format; "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," a rare chance to see that disaster-prone Scrat get flattened in 3-D; and "Avatar," James Cameron's return to feature filmmaking after a 12-year hiatus that will attempt to do for live-action futuristic thrillers what his Titanic did for sinking ships.
If ever a digital-age update on what was once an Ike-era novelty were going to take hold — and persuade more theater operators to invest upward of $100,000 to convert to the technology — it is now, with such already anticipated titles ready to give it a real workout.

"What's going to happen in the next few months is that theater owners will ask themselves, 'Do I want to be the guy watching cars drive by to a screen down the road?' " predicts Jim Gianopulos, co-chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment, which is behind both the "Ice Age" sequel and the Cameron release. "With 'Monsters vs. Aliens' and 'Ice Age' ramping up to 'Avatar,' there will come a tipping point."
Studios seem to have at least solved most quality issues. While DreamWorks (aka the House that "Shrek" Built), has taken longer to join the 3-D revolution than Disney, Warner Bros. and Sony, the wait apparently was worth it, if early reactions to "Monsters" are any indication.
Families who packed a recent screening chuckled their way through the sci-fi shenanigans as a gang of misfit creatures led by Susan, a 49-foot-11 1/2-inch woman with the vocal spunk of Reese Witherspoon, battles a teeny four-eyed squid man from another planet. But it was the visual effects, such as the galactic blast that caused smoky spirals and fiery rocks to shoot into the audience, that earned the biggest reactions.
They ooohed. They aaahed. And at least one youthful voice was heard paying the ultimate compliment: "Cooooool!"
Not just an afterthought
Until recently, most 3-D fare produced for non-IMAX movie screens was an afterthought, converted from 2-D. Monsters, however, was designed and filmed with added dimension in mind. "What better movie to do in 3-D," says director Conrad Vernon, referring to his sci-fi spoof's allusions to B-movies from the '50s. "It felt like perfect timing."

EXCLUSIVE: ‘X-Men 3 Director Brett Ratner Says ‘There’s Nothing Left’ In Comics For Him To Adapt
Published by Casey Seijas on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 11:55 am.
He’s the rumored front-runner to call the shots on a “Conan” revamp, he’s officially onboard to produce and direct an adaptation of Rob Liefeld’s “Youngblood,” and he already has one financially successful comic book adaptation under his belt (2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand“), but Hollywood heavyweight Brett Ratner isn’t done with comics. In fact, he wants to do more movies based on them.
“I would do any superhero movie that I was asked to do,” Ratner told MTV News. “But I wouldn’t have been interested in ‘Iron Man.’ I have a lot of respect for [Jon Favreau], because to me, it was a B-character. ‘Iron Man’? … But look what he did.”
The ever-outspoken Ratner — who has achieved a “love him or hate him” status among fans — lamented to MTV that he nearly landed a franchise character (namely Superman) but eventually passed on the chance to direct Big Blue’s return to cinemas. He now worries that the ship has sailed on notable characters that have mainstream box office appeal.
“I was so upset when I left ‘Superman,’” said Ratner. “[Bryan] Singer has his ‘X-Men,’ [Christopher] Nolan has ‘Batman‘ — there’s nothing left. ‘Hulk‘ has been exploited already. There’s nothing left for me.”
“I mean, I’m not going to go and do the Silver Surfer or something,” shrugged Ratner.
What do you think, comic book movie fans? Are there any comic characters out there you think Ratner should take on? what about his remarks on the availability of good characters to bring to theaters? Sound off in the comment section.

Hayter, Carver form Dark Hero
Writer, producer team for genre projects
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Hayter
"Watchmen" co-writer David Hayter has teamed with producer Benedict Carver to form Dark Hero Studios, a company that will generate film, TV, Internet and video game projects in the action, sci-fi and horror genres.
Formation of the company comes as Hayter prepares to make his directorial debut on his werewolf thriller script "Slaughter's Road," with Carver producing along with Steven Paul through Crystal Sky Prods. Production begins in the summer.
Hayter said Thomas Dekker ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") will star, and Ray Stevenson ("Rome") is in talks to star alongside Dekker.
Dark Hero begins its slate of projects with "Demonology," which Hayter wrote and will direct, and the company will set up graphic novels, comicbooks, video game properties and original genre scripts for movie treatment. Sarah Freudeman will be Dark Hero's director of development.
Carver and Hayter said they will tie down independent financing shortly, setting up a company that will finance through pre-sales and equity so that Dark Hero can hang onto negative ownership and build a library of films.
"Many people would love to have the studio-based producer gig, but if you want to build asset value through a library, you have to be more entrepreneurial and avoid giving away a lot of rights upfront," Carver said. "David will create, write and direct movies and TV series for the company, but he'll also be a magnet for other writers and directors to work with us. "
Hayter's script credits include "X-Men," "X2" and "The Scorpion King" (he co-wrote "Watchmen" with Alex Tse)
Carver is prexy of Crystal Sky, and he will produce "Slaughter's Road" there (and probably other pics down the line), but he is transitioning out of the banner within the next few weeks. Prior to his Crystal Sky gig, Carver was senior veep of acquisitions and co-productions at Screen Gems. Before that, he was a film reporter at Daily Variety. Carver produced "Doomsday" and the upcoming film based on the Namco vidgame "Tekken."More than one option(Co) Daily Variety
Filmography, Year, Role
(Co) Daily Variety
Hayter said he hatched "Slaughter's Road" after he was offered a slew of werewolf movies and found enough flaws in each to never want to make such a pic; genre-savvy friends changed his mind.
Hayter's "Demonology" grew out of his experiences attending an international high school in Japan.
"It's about an American kid who goes to one of these schools in Belgium, but it brings my own horrible experiences of school to life," Hayter said.
Aside from the new projects, Hayter has also found himself campaigning to get respect for "Watchmen," which hasn't so far lived up to blockbuster projections (the film's domestic gross fell off 67% in its second weekend).
"It's odd for a picture to gross $63 million in its first four days and have people wonder if it's a failure," he said. ENDS

New Line is mounting a second 3-D "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
One challenge to mounting a second film was finding a story to tell, since "Journey" author Jules Verne wrote just the one book. One concept considered was setting the story in Atlantis, but with several Atlantis projects under development at other studios and underwater photography costly, it was nixed.

Could ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ Be The Best Comic-Book Video Game Ever?
Published by Tim Kash on Friday, March 13, 2009 at 3:14 pm.
FROM NEWSROOM BLOG: Finally, with “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” it looks like we may have our first-ever really great comic-book video game. And it’s about time!
We all know that the comic-books-to-movies game is a tricky one that is gotten wrong more often than right (”Catwoman,” “Daredevil,” “The Punisher”). Well, an even worse situation is the world of comic-books-to-video-games.
Whenever a comic-book movie hits theaters, the inevitable onslaught of action figures, lunchboxes, clothing, coffee mugs and computer games begins. Comic-book heroes are the perfect candidates to have great quality video-games made about them, and there’s an enormous array of great story lines, characters, weapons, gadgets, fighting styles and love interests to include in what should be awesome video games. But with the rush to get the games out in time to meet the movie release dates, the games are rarely as good as they could be (”Superman 64,” anyone?).{/b}
For more from Tim Kash on the “Batman: Arkham Asylum” video game head over to Newsroom.MTV.com.

With Platinums library, there should not be a shortage. The problem seems to be with such a big library, there is alot to choose from. Getting people there doesnt see to be a problem, but I think financing creates a problem too. I think a video like "the weapon" combined with a really good sales pitch, could help close the deal. Some Advertising companys seem to do it like that with their clients. Not sure how they (the execs) do it now, but its just an idea. Pie charts, videos and numbers always look good to me. When you see it, it always looks better than when you just say it. IMO only

Im guessing he will come up with the cash. Lets hope the 4 more get put into play soon, as the delay will cause these movies to be released in 12/13 timeframe. I just read Marvel moved back a few movies too. Now would be the time for Platinum movies to jump in and fill the gap. IMO

Season of the stars
Spring film projects bring big names to the Big Easy as Hollywood South cranks up again
Tuesday, March 10, 2009
Mike Scott
In what has become an annual rite, local film industry activity is rising with the temperatures, as a number of major productions -- with a number of major stars attached -- come to town to take advantage of New Orleans' springtime scenery and the state's tax incentives.
Among the notable names on tap: recent Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke, past Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren.
And all that's just on "The Expendables," an action thriller from Nu Image/Millennium Films set to shoot for nine weeks locally starting in late April -- after a three-week stint in Brazil -- and one of three high-profile projects scheduled to set up camp in New Orleans this spring.
The movie, about a team of mercenaries involved in a plan to overthrow a South American dictator, is based on a script by Stallone, who will star and direct. It recently earned headlines when it was announced California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger would play a bit part in the film, but those scenes reportedly will be shot in California.
"The Expendables" will be joined in town by the DC Comics film "Jonah Hex," a Warner Bros.-backed supernatural Western that will star another recent Oscar nominee, Josh Brolin, in the title role, and two-time nominee John Malkovich. (And which, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is this close to landing Megan Fox of "Transformers").
In a July interview on the set of the locally shot dramatic comedy "I Love You Phillip Morris," starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, "Jonah Hex" producer Andrew Lazar ("Get Smart," "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind") said the film would take advantage of the area's stock of old forts and other Civil War-era settings.
It will shoot from mid-April through June.
At the same time, Brandon Routh, who starred as the Man of Steel in 2006's "Superman Returns," will be in town for the indie project "Dead of Night," another supernatural-comics-inspired movie (translation: potential movie franchise).
That one is inspired by the Italian comic book "Dylan Dog" -- which is the name of Routh's main character -- and tells the story of a private investigator who stumbles onto the world of the undead. Originally set in London, the story has been reset in Louisiana for the film's purposes.
Greg Cannom, who last month won his fourth Oscar, for his makeup work on the locally shot "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," has also signed up for "Dead of Night."
Spring film projects bring big names to the Big Easy as Hollywood South cranks up again
Add to all that the continued local presence of two major TV productions -- the Disney Channel toddler-targeted "The Imagination Movers" and the HBO drama "Treme" -- and the local film industry appears to be in full stride. That's a big change from recent months, which saw a lull in major projects dating back to the wrapping of Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" in late August, and two movie-of-the-week projects in early December.
A recent Twitter update from a local film-crew member said it all: "Drought for months and then all of a sudden job offers from everywhere, and different departments even."
That whole slow-winter/busy-spring thing has become a reliable local trend, as film projects flock to south Louisiana in the spring and summer, slow to a trickle in the fall, then all but dry up in winter.

"I kept telling everybody, 'Don't get too upset,' " said Jennifer Day, the head of the city's Office of Film and Video, of the recent winter doldrums. "Granted, our pace is slightly less than last year, but to be honest, 21 major projects (in 2008) is pretty amazing. You can't have a record year every year. We're really looking at a sustainable number of projects coming."
Those include five additional "solid leads," Day said, although they're not solid enough for her to reveal details. (One can safely speculate, however, that Forest Whitaker's planned Louis Armstrong biopic is likely one of them.) There are a handful of others considering shooting in the area but are not seen as slam-dunks just yet, Day said.
"There's a natural ebb and flow," Day said. "This is not a traditional industry. We forget that. We have to keep reminding ourselves that this isn't a 24/7, 365 industry. It's a project-by-project industry."

Older news but I thought this could be something to look at. Possible movie? No one will say. But good Food for thought. Maybe good for the rumor mill I would think. IMO only
Can you talk about the status of any upcoming films or video games? Where is “The Darkness” film at? “Witchblade?” “Magdalena?”
Unfortunately, it's my policy to not really talk about much until it's really real, but I know Michael Rymer has talked about “Witchblade” a few places and Gale Anne Hurd, Jenna Dewan and Luke Goss have been talking about “Magdalena” a lot in the press lately. “The Darkness” is very close to some insane announcements of which I'm very excited, but nothing is signed yet so I'm going to withhold that. Sorry to be a tease.

10 Exciting Comic Book Adaptations Currently In Development.
9. Cowboys & Aliens
An extraterrestrial species lands in Arizona in the mid-1800s. The aliens plan to quash the Wild West and enslave humanity, but the cowboys and native Apache have other plans. The cowboys include a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson who is to be played by Robert Downey Jr.
Dreamworks and Universal optioned the rights from Platinum studios so this project’s going to have the likes of Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Steven Spielberg behind it so we can expect big things.
Although the premise is quite quirky, initial feedback on the script is it’s quite formulaic ticking many of the Hollywood blockbuster cliche boxes but hopefully the big names above can pull of something special with it otherwise it could end up as a Wild Wild West with Aliens.

DreamWorks ramps up slate
15 projects from Par are 'go' as loan timeline is stretched

The goalposts are within sight.
Despite the likelihood that its bank deal won't close until at least late April, DreamWorks' film development remains on full tilt with the aim of releasing at least two pics next year through its distribution partnership with Disney.
About 15 of 17 of DreamWorks-developed projects recently acquired from Paramount are now considered "go" projects, and DreamWorks continues to acquire and develop additional projects to flesh out a comprehensive slate covering all genres. Not everything about the situation is ideal: Execs are beating the bushes for comedy scripts, and the lack of long-term financing has prevented their attaching talent to the many projects.
So far, JPMorgan Securities has won firm commitments on more than $150 million of a targeted $325 million in first-phase syndicated bank financing, and a source close to the process suggested the likelihood of securing well more than $200 million in commitments by month's end. The studio had hoped to close on the syndication by March 31, but the recent decision to use Disney instead of Universal for distribution prevented the distribution of syndication terms sheets and thus delayed the already-difficult process.
In fact, a first draft of so-called longform documents on the syndication are only now being distributed to committed lenders. So considering the continuing malaise in the credit markets, those involved in the process suggest it reflects well on DreamWorks that the syndication will close soon at all.
"We're getting extremely good buzz and are more than halfway there," a source close to the financing process said. "I'm confident we will get beyond the goalposts."
It now appears the first-phase financing will close in late April or early May, but certainly sometime in the spring. Mumbai-based Reliance Big Entertainment will match the financing at that point and already has provided some interim financing along with DreamWorks principal Steven Spielberg.
DreamWorks chose Disney over Universal because the Burbank studio offered lucrative pay TV slots with the premium pay channel Starz and about $150 million in prints and advertising money. Universal had offered only a limited TV deal and no P&A, with the latter point causing some concerns among DreamWorks' financial partners.
Spielberg and DreamWorks chief Stacey Snider ended their executive contracts with Paramount in the fall, effectively ending a two-year relationship with the Melrose studio. Work to secure funding for a slate of DreamWorks-owned projects began almost immediately afterwards.
Projects well advanced in development at DreamWorks following their ownership transfer from Paramount include the political thriller "Motorcade," the literary adaptation "The 39 Clues," the fact-based drama "The Trial of the Chicago Seven" and a pair of comic-book adaptations -- "Cowboys and Aliens" and "Atlantis Rising." Other pics in development include the recently acquired literary adaptation "The Big One" and the space adventure "Quartermain," among others.
DreamWorks execs are confident of having at least a couple productions under way by the fall. Also heading before the cameras in October is "Dinner for Schmucks," a Jay Roach comedy set for release in 2011 by Paramount with DreamWorks and Spyglass on board to co-finance with Paramount.
DreamWorks execs envision releasing about four to six films per year through Disney eventually.

They already own Malibu, but I think Platinum still owns some characters. Still waiting on that "Prime" movie, if its not lock away in some Marvel vault gathering dust. LOL. I also think we have better deals in place with better production companies. The characters are just not as well known as Marvels Wolverine, X-Men etc. We will get there after some of the first movies come out. IMO
