Ratner starts May 15th
Marc Ratner
Outgoing executive director has been with Nevada Athletic Commission since 1985
Marc Ratner, the widely respected executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, resigned Thursday to accept a lucrative three-year contract from the Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Ratner, who has been with the commission since 1985 and was appointed full-time executive director in 1992, called the offer "an extraordinary opportunity for my family." His last day with the athletic commission will be May 13.
"I love the commission and I love working for the state, and so from that standpoint, this was a very difficult decision," said Ratner, who will be a vice president for the UFC. "The commission has been such a huge part of my life for so long. But I had to think of my family and this offer was amazing."
UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta said Ratner, 61, will be involved in all aspects of the operation. He will concentrate on regulatory issues and dealing with state athletic commissions.
The UFC recently was sanctioned in California, making it the 20th state where mixed martial arts fights are regulated.
Fertitta, who was a member of the athletic commission and developed a close bond with Ratner, said the hire is significant for his company.
"Obviously, Marc's reputation is impeccable and his knowledge is first-rate, and people like that are the kinds of people we want working for us," Fertitta said. "He's very knowledge about mixed martial arts and he's one of the most knowledgeable guys anywhere about combat sports, and MMA is a combat sport.
"He adds a lot of value to our company. Our business is literally exploding and we've had to bring in a number of key senior-level executives to catch up with the demand the company is putting upon us."
Commission chairman Skip Avansino, who was a college classmate of Ratner's at UNR, said Ratner will be difficult to replace.
Avansino praised Ratner for his dedication to the commission and to the sports he regulated. Avansino said few, if any, regulators are held in as high esteem as Ratner is.
"There just aren't a lot of Marc Ratners walking around out there," Avansino said. "I wish there were, because then it wouldn't be such a big task to replace him. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement, but Marc has a wonderful opportunity with a very successful and growing company.
"He's been a marvelous leader for this commission as executive director and we'll miss him terribly. It's going to be a daunting task to replace him, but we're going to put a process into place to come as close as we can to getting someone of his caliber."
Ratner played a large role in writing the rules the commission adopted that allowed the UFC to promote in Nevada beginning in 2001.
In its early days, the UFC was a "no holds barred" organization with virtually no rules. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called it barbaric and campaigned to have it outlawed.
But Ratner worked with the Association of Boxing Commissions to develop a standard set of rules that helped create the modern UFC.
"(The commission) never could have accepted it in the (no holds barred) days," Ratner said. "But once there were a defined set of rules and weight classes and such, then it became something that would work for the state.
"There's always fine-tuning and it's something I'll look at every day. How do we make this better and how do we make it safer?"
Ratner's first day with the UFC will be May 15. There is an April 6 UFC card at the Hard Rock Hotel. Ratner said he would recuse himself from all duties involving that show
LAS VEGAS -- The longtime executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission said Friday that he is resigning to take an administrative post with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Marc Ratner, 61, a former inspector for the influential Nevada boxing oversight board and its director since 1992, called his three-year contract with the mixed martial arts fight promoter "a wonderful opportunity for myself and my family."
"It's the right time," Ratner said. His last day with the athletic commission will be May 13.
Ratner said he will start May 15 as a vice president of Las Vegas-based Zuffa LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and producer of televised pay-per-view mixed martial arts events. He declined to say how much he'll be paid.
Lorenzo Fertitta, UFC owner and president of Las Vegas-based Station Casinos Inc., did not immediately respond Friday to requests for comment. Fertitta worked with Ratner when Fertitta served on the Nevada Athletic Commission from 1996 to 2000.
The UFC was recently sanctioned in California, making it the 20th state to regulate mixed martial arts fights.
Dana White, UFC president, issued a statement Friday emphasizing Ratner's experience in writing and enforcing regulations covering "combat sports."
Ratner helped write state rules that in 2001 let the UFC begin promoting in Nevada -- a step toward legitimizing the previously no-holds-barred bouts that had drawn criticism as barbaric. Ratner also worked with the Association of Boxing Commissions to develop standards and rules that now govern UFC events.
Ratner will deal with other state athletic commissions in his new role.

Mixed martial arts and the UFC have received a big boost in prestige and credibility in Nevada. Marc Ratner, one of boxing's most respected officials, recently resigned as executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission to become a vice president with Zuffa, LLC, which owns the UFC.

New competitor for boxing
Ultimate Fighting Championship draws different breed of contestants, fans
By Michael Hirsley
Tribune staff reporter
Published April 11, 2006
It is not only permissible to hit a man when he is down, it is often advisable in Chicagoan Andrei Arlovski's sport.
In addition to punching with fists, competitors are allowed to kick, wrestle, apply chokeholds and hit with their elbows.
Welcome to Ultimate Fighting Championship. Launched five years ago as an American version of mixed martial arts fighting and reformed from barely regulated "no holds barred" fights banned across the U.S., UFC is both more and less than the sport of boxing.
It is more in allowing all the brutal action that is forbidden in boxing but appeals to the video-game generation, especially the coveted 18- to 34-year-old male demographic.
It is less in that "you are not scorned as a quitter if you tap out (submit), unlike in boxing, so you can survive to fight another day," said Mike Garcia, a former boxer who now trains boxers and mixed martial arts fighters at a Chicago gym. "And unlike boxing referees, UFC referees will stop a fight quickly if one fighter is in big trouble."
While it may be to boxing what demolition derby is to auto racing, UFC proudly proclaims that no competitor has ever been seriously injured, a claim boxing can't make.
But the comparison in which UFC really wants to top boxing is commercial popularity. And the newcomer to the fight world is on the map and gaining inroads in live gates, corporate sponsors and TV exposure.
Take Arlovski, for example.
The Belarus-born Chicago resident is a newborn king in the UFC, at least until Saturday, when he defends his heavyweight title against Tim Sylvia in Anaheim.
They are not fighting in a cozy venue that a few thousand fans can fill. The first UFC event in California is slated for a sold-out 17,000-seat Arrowhead Pond.
In addition, the Arlovski-Sylvia main event and undercard fights will be shown on a $39.95 pay-per-view telecast.
Arlovski, 27, saw his first mixed martial arts fight on TV in Belarus "when I was 12 or 13 years old. I was surprised when I saw a 170-pound guy choke a 300-pound guy into submission.
"I thought, `I'd like to be like that.'"
At the time Arlovski was a soccer player. He began lifting weights, then went from high school into a police academy where he could train to be a police officer and a mixed martial arts fighter. He graduated and became both before traveling to the U.S. six years ago and focusing on the UFC.
After only nine fights, of which he won seven, he is a champion.
"I understand that I'm one of the best, not the best necessarily," he said with humility that belies his game face as "The Pit Bull."
The 6-foot-3-inch, 240-pound Arlovski wears a specially constructed mouthpiece with fangs into the Octagon, the eight-sided metal cage in which UFC bouts are contested.
Boxing promoter Dominic Pesoli, who owns the JABB gym at 410 N. Oakley where Arlovski trains, has been aware of UFC only since meeting Arlovski.
"It's way more legitimate than pro wrestling," Pesoli said.
State law forbids matches in Chicago.
"Ultimate Fighting is illegal in Illinois unless a representative comes in and demonstrates that it is exempt from the ban," said Susan Hofer, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations, which authorizes the state's fight events, including boxing.
Hofer said UFC events could be allowed on a case-by-case basis. She said mixed martial arts competition has been allowed or banned depending on compliance with state rules, including an overseer sanctioning body and provisions for safety of contestants and spectators.
UFC President Dana White said the sport already complies with such rules. If it did not eliminate tactics like "biting, elbows to the spine and eye gouging," he said, "we would still be widely banned and we could not market ourselves and grow."
Live gate receipts, pay-per-view numbers and cable's Spike TV telecasts attest to UFC's growing popularity. Spike TV reported its premiere of "Ultimate Fighter 3" last Thursday drew 2.4 million viewers, a record for the network and a higher total than TNT drew for an NBA doubleheader in the same time slot.
There is another measure of UFC's legitimacy: Sports books take wagers on matches.
"About 10 years ago I was on a panel with [U.S. Sen.] John McCain and I said we would not think of allowing or sanctioning UFC events in Nevada because it had no rules or regulations," Ratner recalled. "It was like a barroom brawl."
The Nevada Athletic Commission participated in reforming the UFC, and sanctioned the mixed martial arts bouts six years ago.
"Now the UFC has referees, judges, rounds and rules to make it a regulated, safe sport," Ratner said. "The sport is growing."

Hughes isn't as flashy as St. Pierre but very dangerous. I have to agree with you Matt Hughes will win via the ground and pound.

Georges St. Pierre gets another crack at UFC welterweight belt at 15:15 on April 7, 2006, EST.
TORONTO (CP) - Canadian mixed martial arts fighter Georges St. Pierre is getting another shot at the UFC welterweight title.
Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White made the announcement Friday in a taped message during a Toronto appearance by the Montreal fighter and lightweights Mark Hominick and Sam Stout, who train out of London, Ont.
There is no date yet for the title fight, but St. Pierre expects it in the fall. Las Vegas is the likely site.
The championship bout will be St. Pierre's second crack at 170-pound champion Matt Hughes. The American defeated St. Pierre in UFC 50: The War of 04 in October 2004.
St. Pierre started well against Hughes in that fight but was forced to submit with one second remaining in the first round when the champion caught him in an armbar.
St. Pierre raised his MMA record to 12-1-0 when he scored a split decision over former champion B.J. Penn in March in Las Vegas in UFC 58: USA vs. Canada.
Hughes, whose record is 40-4-0, lost his welterweight title to Penn in UFC 46: Supernatural in January 2004. He won it back after Penn was stripped of the championship belt in a dispute with the UFC.
Hughes is slated to meet UFC legend Royce Gracie in UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie in a non-title fight on May 27 in Los Angeles.

squawk box from investopedia
An intercom speaker often used on brokers' trading desks in investment banks and stock brokerages. A squawk box allows a firm's analysts and traders to communicate with the firm's brokers.
Firms use squawk boxes to inform their brokers about current analyst recommendations, market events and information about block trades. This line of communication helps to keep brokers updated on important market factors and allows the firm to guide the trading of its brokers.

float=
The total number of shares publicly owned and available for trading. The float is calculated by subtracting restricted shares from outstanding shares. Also known as "free float".
For example, a company may have 10 million outstanding shares, but only seven million are trading on the stock market. Therefore, this company's float would be seven million.
Stocks with small floats of less than three million shares tend to be a lot more volatile than others.
