A local major Bank is offering you a free 8 " Galaxy tab4 if you open up an account with them, there can be no doubt tablets have reached saturation. Personally I would prefer a good quality toaster.
I thought today was the official launch of surface pro 3, so I dropped by best buy to have a look. No one was playing with the Demo so I had some hands on time. My impression a very nice device, if I needed a laptop replacement I would consider it, it had a better web browsing experience than the mac book pro 13 inch 20 yards across the store, I suspect it was mostly because of configuration. The pen on the surface pro 3 actually seen to work well, I could see using it to fill out the many forms , orders and paperwork most Health care workers need to do, this would make big data analysis in Health care more of a reality. As for windows 8.X, I have been a sufferer from the very beginning so I must be getting immune.
Intel will likely be unable to deliver its upcoming Broadwell 14 nanometer chipset architecture
Someone should tell this Motely fool author (tonner?) that you can buy Motherboards that will run broadwell today, have been able to for the last two months. I will agree with his/her premise that apple does not devote much resources to imac, MacBook books, and mac pro's; didn't it take like 5 years to update the mac pro. The author's premise that you need broadwell to do 4k, and retina display is baloney.
The smartphone market would affect the future server market though in that it will still provide more funding for better fabs than servers will.
I am not so sure of that, most of the juicy profits in smartphones is going to two players, Apple and Samsung. I don't see apple getting into the fab buissness or subsidizing some one else. Sumsung is in the fab business but mostly for memory and their stuff. The other two big fab people will fab just about anything for anyone for the right price. When an ASUS,lenovo or Dell smartphone is perceived equivalent to an iphone or Galaxy S, then we will see a huge shakeup, and that may happen in the next 3-5 years. Smartphone profits are still in a verticle business mode, INTC knows how to compete best as a supplier in the horizontal business model.
I put in a sell order for 2000 shares at $30, it got filled. I need some vacation money. I thought it was a good deal for shorts to pay $30 for may shares today; and if INTC closes above $30 I will not be disappointed.
The US returned the favor - 10 billion fine against a French bank. France was complaining[/I
There is a huge difference between what Intel was accused of doing and never admitted in court; which was uncompetitive behavaior towards a competitor. To what the French bank has admitted doing in court, using U.S. dollar based assets to launder sanctioned buissness, this is equivalent to a French Bank using U.S, dollars to help found terrorism and nuclear weapons proliferation in IRAN. The French government should be prosecuting these banking officials. One can make an argument a lot of U.S. banking executives got away will financial genocide using the to big to fail excuse.
The Broadwell Core M chip and board are significantly smaller than the Haswell version in the MacBook Air.
I would love to see what apple can do with that core M motherboard, mac book air is due for a retina display refresh, hopefully something will be available for the holiday buying season.
let's see what prices people will pay for the fastest Android experience - by far.
Rumor has it that the Google is ending the Nexus line, and replacing it with a silver or whatever series, the google Nexus 10 is like 18months old and showing its age, this would make a good Nexus 10 replacement too bad that it looks like there may not be one.
Intel to show Broadwell this week.
No mention of fan free designs, that's what I would really like to see more of.
Was this problem fixed with the recent refresh of Haswell processors?
The overclocking crowd think its an improvement, they were actually risking the die on the old processors by removing the metal surfaces and applying their heat sinks directly.
the integrated modem and all of the other SOC crap is probably what sells it.
No question about that, and it costing INTC cold hard contra revenue, even I can figure that out.
Benchmarking still seems to be a bit of mess for phones/tablets.
The only thing that matters on phones and tablets for those who don't play games more intense than candy cane is how snappy the screen refreshes IMHO, and the snappiness seems to get worse with every os update. I don't think I will be doing some serious excel spreadsheets on my I-phone.
but Apple wouldn't be the only large cap tech that overpaid for something large and useless...
When companies start overpaying for other companies, then they are in a bubble, it also tells us they don't think much of there own stock IMHO, facebook also comes to mind. It also tells us how vunerable they are in certain sectors. Apple has never been able to get any traction in streaming music and they hope beats will help them here, I don't think so, beats is not in the same leaque as spotify. Streaming video is dominated by Netflix, and net neutrality is no longer the case in the USA, the big ISPs got some big bucks from Netflix for the pipes. Google is pissing off the youtube crowd, not a good move google.
When this becomes obvious its share price will tank to more realistic
levels.
I would tend to agree with this, but apple's P/E is very modest, so the fall should be gradual. Apple's only growth engine now is smartphones, eventually the teleco's will smarten up and refuse to pay the subsidies , there are enough very good and much less expensive alternates out there, its just a matter of time before one becomes the next hot item. Apple can not afford any I-phone6 hiccups.
I hear the clink clink clink of money in my mind.
There are already service fee's, internet access ISP, office 365,smartphone contracts, etc. INTC does not seem to be able to get in on the act, Mckaffe does not seem to have paned out IMHO.
PCs are becoming like cars.
Good analogy, the replacement cycle for cars has lengthened considerably also in the last 10-15 years.
Seems the "PC is dead" crowd is once again on the wrong side of history.
I have noticed that thin client prices have actually increased slightly these last two months, i3 thin clients bare bones that where going for 299 are now 399, if all you want to pay is 299 you get a pentium instead. I have not really seen any I3 systems on sale this past month, this bodes well for the back to school and holiday season sales IMHO. Speaking of compute cycles, 4K dislays are really coming down in price, not just the big Cheap(in price) t.v.s but actual monitors meant for P.C.s can be had for $599, Samsung has a non ips 28 inch 4k montor which keeps selling out. Voice comand and voice to text keeps getting better and using up cpu cycles along the way.
ASUS Transformer Pad 10.1" 32GB Android 4.2 Tablet With NVIDIA Tegra 4 Processor - Grey $399
In the weekly flyer from Best Buy, this one has a beautiful 2560x1600 screen, if intel does not have a baytrail, cherrytrail version this is a big loss, it would be nice to do a baytrail Vs. tegra 4 side by side comparison!
The phone is the computer
Baloney, the phone is the short data pack communication device. How many of your posts in the last week where sent by your phone. How much Netflix did you watch on your phone. How many spreadsheets did you work on with your phone, how many powerpoint point presentations did you work on with your phone.
[iI can eventually sell what I can make but I can never sell what I can't make...
]
You can sell what people want, Intel needs to start making things that people want.
The actual prize to win is the smartphone business
Even the high end smartphone market is starting to stagnate, apple has millions of 5c models on its hands trying to unload. I have a 4S and saw no need to up grade to a 5, 5c or 5S, I do not do any work on my smartphone, read and answer an occasional e-mail is about the most intense thing I do on a smartphone. I may get an iphone 6, the screen may finally be big enough to warrant an upgrade. The resell market for smartphones in mature markets is also starting to take up the slack. I think one of the reason's apple is in no hurry to release the iphone 6 is they don't want the analysts to see less of a bang on new model introduction than with previous models.
I don't think Intel has a shot at a $100 Nexus phone
Why not, I did not say they would make money on it.
I am more interested in what is coming from google, Nexus 7 is due for a refresh, no sight of a nexus8, and just recently there is talk of a low cost Nexus phone in the $100 range sounds like intel may be able to meet the price with contra revenue.
Anyway, these facebook aquisitions lately remind me of the dotcom bubble -
Zuckerberg is not as stupid as he seems, He is buying questionable companies with his bubble stock PE 106. Facebook value is in the subscribers, that's what generates the advertising money, subscribers can be fickle. I am sure there will be other facebooks, twitters, yahoos, etc. Twenty years from now there will be college course on how social media was done in such an antisocial fashion during the first decade. As for these virtual reality devices there will be a market but not as big as the pushers think, it will follow a pattern similar to 3D glasses. Great for travel, museums and porn. the amount of bandwidth theses things require means they are not coming to the general public any time soon.
my four year old laptop with "Intel Inside" starts furiously chirping at me if I keep it from its power supply any more than two hours. So things have gotten better??
How about 9 hours for a 13 inch MacBook pro with retina display! Of course Mac os X is a little more power efficient, but you can still get 7-8 hrs fro the equivalent Windows (cough) platform.
Ronster, the Military drone market could be worth billions, if they could have come into extensive use five years earlier the loses in Irag and Afganastan could have been less by an order of magnitude. As for drones delievering parcels on your doorstep, this is B.S., anyone who flys model airplanes or helicpters, knows you can't fly these things safely when the winds are over 15 - 20 mph. This from a grown man who flies electric model airplanes.
What kind of customer is Intel trying to attract with this?
The over clocker DIY crowd, they love that sort of stuff, I am sure if an OEM want's to order 10,000, Intel will let them have them without the label.
The gap is particularly wide in Italy, where locals spend 37 hours per month on their phones
Anyone who has followed cellphone use in Europe knows everyone useses them, everyone texts there ,this predates twitter by a decade, started off big with scandanavian teenages almost two decades ago, Nokia lost its edge, it good have been a leader with apple, instead it became a carcass for MSFT.
Dell Venue 8, running android jellybean on clovertrail, $199. in local flyer, too bad Dell was not selling this one year ago!

Not everything google touches turns to gold, Motorola was one of the first big wins for INTC smartphone CPUs , Lenovo and INTC have a relatively good working relationship hopefully this can continue to be exploited with smart phones. $3 billion for something you paid 12 billion for, I guess when you are google you can afford some big mistakes.
I really don't know what event triggered this
Let’s see INTC Barley Meets its Earnings estimates and the stock refuses to crash below $25 may have something to do with it.
Why would INTC off load (what I presume to be the quark stuff)to TSMC
It has been mentioned here its LTE modem stuff, I don't know if there is also quark stuff. A lot of the work TSMC is getting was in the pipeline a long time ago.
Intel upgraded to Overweight on stable PC market at JPMorgan
Market seems to like that, here is hoping INTC retains any gains after the earnings call on Thursday.
and sport the absolutely terribly slow TouchWiz
All the techies who complained about touchwiz are now praising the new Samsung interface in the next gen Galaxy pro tabs, they where the rage of CES.
rather nice top and bottom line growth numbers Y/Y
Whenever MSFT wants to boost its growth it just cancels support for its last major corporate windows version, MSFT was pretty generous with support for XP, partly because Vista was such a piece of..., windows 7 sales are going to go through the roof, windows 8 is such crap I don't see MSFT ending windows 7 sales/support for at least another 5 years, windows 9 or whatever, has to be good for them to milk the cash cow next time.
AMD has a long term future under the current business model.
The current business model is to make the insides for Xbox one and PS4 and hope no one notices they make peanuts, and lose money in P.C.s.
the sick and dying Microsoft just hit another multi-year high today wink
MSFT came out and said they are selling every XBOX one they can make. I am really annoyed with windows 8.1/8 the video app keeps prompting me to subscribe or puts annoying adds in front of my own music on my P.C. !
[If you watched Youtube or streamed Netflix/Hulu, you'd be 5x that amount in no time.i]
I have a 500 megabyte plan and the only time I have ever gone over is when the carrier upgraded iOS when I was not in wifi range without my permission. I am a YouTube junky but only YouTube on my iPhone when the wifi bars show a connection.
[perhaps an iPad Mini or Air i]
I have an IPad air so far enjoying it, I can actually do cut and paste, still not as good as a mouse but much better than first gen iOS defies, I have ordered a n engraved mini air so will see what it's like, color gambit on the mini air is supposed to annoy some iPad air users, so I will see what it looks like.
[iThe post-pc era: my mother asked for an internet acces]
I had a first generation iPad that I stopped using after about six weeks , basically was two slow after all the upgrades, I decided to give it to my mother, she was dead set against learning computers but when I started playing local radio stations from her home town in Eurpoe and getting her to read the local newspapers and see public t.v. She got hooked on it, even an iPad first gen can do those functions slowly but well, she walks around the house with her iPad all day now, only problem with the non lighting port devices is it's hard to connect if you have arthititis, so she just leaves the cable connected to the iPad,.
