Iron Man and Scott Pilgrim Lead the Comic Book Movie Charge in 2010
OK, so 2009 wasn't exactly the most thrilling year for comic book movies. But 2010's potential for awesome can be summed up in two words: Iron Man 2. (Fine, two words and a number.) In addition to Tony Stark's return, a bevy of cult comics this year are looking to push the genre past capes and cowls. Take a look at 2010's slate and you'll find horror, teen comedy, spy drama and, alright, a few superheroes too (though not your usual suspects).
Kick-Ass (April 16)
While early clips for Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar's ultra-violent "realistic" superhero comic were a bit flat, the red-band trailer featuring Hit Girl and Nic Cage's Big-Daddy totally won me over. The mix of shocking violence and sharp dialogue is reminiscent of Vaughn's acclaimed crime drama Layer Cake, elevating Kick-Ass beyond its simplistic "Superbad in capes" concept. If nothing else, Kick-Ass could give the earnest teen superhero genre a much needed kick in the, er, rear.
Iron Man 2 (May 7)
Iron Man 2 is the most eagerly anticipated movie of 2010. And if the new trailer is any indication, Tony Stark has plenty of friends this time out: Not only is Mickey Rourke channeling Rocky & Bullwinkle's Boris, we also have Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer and Samuel L. Jackson's eye-patch. The franchise is dangerously approaching Spider-Man 3 territory with all the new characters, but I have faith that Favreau and Downey Jr. can keep this sequel from over-loading.
Dead of Night (Spring Release TBA)
The supernatural investigator Dylan Dog has appeared in comics by Italian writer Tiziano Sclavi since 1986, but he's just now getting the Hollywood treatment. Superman Returns' Brandon Routh stars, bringing Dylan to America to hunt demons in his signature red shirt, black jacket and jeans. While it's too early to say whether he'll actually become the next Hellboy (or the next Constantine), Dylan is certainly the only hero around who looks like he just stepped out of Italian Vogue.
Jonah Hex (June 18)
Megan Fox in a corset. Need I say more? The real reason to be excited about this adaptation of DC's scarred Western anti-hero is its eclectic cast, ranging from Josh Brolin as Hex to John Malkovich as a crazy Confederate vet trying to rewin the Civil War. While news of I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence being brought in for re-shoots isn't altogether inspiring, the weird western world of Hex could make for a very different type of comic book movie.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (August 13)
Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit series, Pilgrim follows the titular hero as he performs with coolest-band-in-comics Sex Bob-omb and fights off girlfriend Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends. Michael Cera stars, and the rest of the cast is a who's who of young Hollywood. (Also fun: Brandon Routh and Fantastic Four's Chris Evans show up as evil exes.) While the lack of an early trailer is concerning, director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) definitely has the action/comedy chops to bring Scott to the mainstream.
Red (November 19)
The casting alone for this Warren Ellis spy comic adaptation is enough to inspire curiosity: everyone from Helen Mirren to Ernest Borgnine has signed on to play cat and mouse opposite Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman. The high concept miniseries is perfect for Willis, who plays a retired CIA agent forced back into action when some younger, deadlier assassins come gunning for him. Though Ellis is one of the top writers in comics, Red is surprisingly his first to make it to the big screen. Look for that to change very soon.
Green Hornet (December 22)
When Seth Rogen was first announced as the star of this pulp hero update, a collective yawn emanated from the geek-o-sphere. But then director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) signed on, and the project became one of the most intriguing of the year. Hornet has always been a fairly bland mish-mash of Batman and The Shadow, which provides Gondry with a blank slate to work his offbeat magic. And with Inglourious Basterds baddie Christoph Waltz on board as a crime lord, Hornet just might capture that pulp spirit that The Spirit lacked.

WOWIO and Heal the Bay Partner in Innovative Fundraising Campaign With eBooks, Cowboys and Alien.
WOWIO continues to support viable nonprofit organizations with fundraising campaign for Heal the Bay.
PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 28, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA: What do Cowboys and Aliens have to do with preserving California’s coastal waters? Actually, a lot, thanks to WOWIO, a leading eBook company, which will donate all proceeds from the graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens to the nonprofit environmental organization, Heal the Bay.
The organization Heal the Bay was formed in 1985, in response to the declining water quality in Santa Monica Bay. The routine dumping of barely treated sewage had led to a decrease in the number and quality of fish in the Bay, as well as increased infection rates for swimmers.
24 years later, through research, education, community action, and advocacy, the group has made great strides to improve conditions, not only in Santa Monica, but also for many of California’s beaches and waterways.
” Support from third parties, such as WOWIO, are important for promoting greater awareness, broadening our base of members, and generating funds to support our efforts to make Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, safe, healthy and clean,” said Natalie Burdick, Heal the Bay’s constituent development manager “we are excited to partner with WOWIO and for the opportunity to benefit from the eBook sales of Cowboys and Aliens.”
For WOWIO, the opportunity to help this organization was too important to pass up. The graphic novel Cowboys and Aliens by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, takes the conventional American frontier story of Cowboys and Indians fighting over land, and adds a new twist—extraterrestrial aliens, who touch down outside Dodge City, forcing these two timeless mortal enemies to put aside their differences long enough to save Earth.
Dreamworks is making Cowboys and Aliens into a major motion picture, to be directed by Jon Favreau, produced by Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard, and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers, Mission Impossible). It is set to go into production in June.
In addition to the Cowboys and Aliens proceeds, WOWIO allows customers to donate additional funds to the Heal the Bay through the “gifting” of eBooks with their Gifting for a Cause program. When sending a personalized gift eBook, WOWIO customers can also choose to give the gift special meaning by supporting Heal the Bay and other worthy causes. 100% of the donation goes to the organization.
Customers also can choose a specially-designed digital dust jacket for their gift, showcasing the cause they are supporting.
About WOWIO:
WOWIO is a unique and viable eBook company that creates valued relationships between readers, sponsors, and publishers. Their community goal is to dramatically expand access to written works by eliminating the economic, geographic, and logistical barriers while also ensuring fair compensation for publishers.

Hey Candy Girl, what up?
I see not much has changed since I've been gone.
Its a beef free diet. Maybe next year, back to the meat.
The Platinum Gazette: Vol I, Issue III: December 2009
A note from the Chairman & CEO...
It's been a fantastic month for Platinum Studios! Along with our continued success signing new television and film deals throughout Hollywood, our next film, "Cowboys & Aliens" is anticipated to go into production in 2010. It's all very exciting and we can't wait to get started.
But something happened last week that really meant a lot to me. We received news that fans of our film "Dead of Night" rallied to promote the film on an MTV.com poll for Most Anticipated Comic Film of 2010. Based on the Italian comic "Dylan Dog," "Dead of Night" placed a respectable 5th in the poll behind some more high profile comic book films like "Iron Man 2" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World." But what's astounding is that all the votes for "Dead of Night" came in as write-ins. Since the film was accidentally kept off the list, it was overwhelming support from fans that drove it up to the top of the list. I would like to personally thank all of those who voted for the film, as it was your passion for the comic that made it such a success in Italy, and it is your continued dedication that will make the film a success. As we are currently in post production on the film, I can confidently tell you that it looks great and all you fans have a lot to look forward to when it is released!
Have a safe and happy holiday. See you in 2010!

"Indestructible Man" primed for TV
Indestructible Fox21 has partnered with Platinum Studios to develop a TV series based on Platinum's upcoming comic-book series "Indestructible Man."
"Indestructible Man" tells the story of Nick Rabel, an elite secret agent who can't be killed and discovers the hard way the difference between "indestructible" and "unbreakable."
"This is a fun comic story where our indestructible lead character has major issues," said Fox21 president Chris Carlisle, who called the tale "a unique combination of superpowers and humor."
Platinum Studios chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who is executive producing the project, said Fox21 brass "really understood this character and the world he inhabits from the very first meeting."

Aurora teams up on "Nightfall"
Vampires are certainly a hot ticket in Hollywood these days, as evidenced in "Twilight: New Moon," which took in over $142 million its first weekend.
Following that trend, Platinum Studios and Aurora Productions are teaming up on a feature version of Platinum's graphic novel "Nightfall." The story centers on a man who finds out just how bad life can get when he discovers that the prison he just entered is controlled by vampires.
The original comic was written by Scott O. Brown ("Atlantis Rising") and illustrated by Ferran Xalabarder, was published in 2007 by Platinum. Stuart just wrapped "The Wild Girl," and is in development on "The Travel Writer," "Infinity," and "Journal of the Dead."

"Dylan Dog" fans take poll by surprise"
Gunplay On a recent poll conducted by MTV.com, Platinum Studios' film adaptation of the beloved Italian comic book "Dylan Dog" ranked fifth amongst all comic book movies expected to be released in 2010. The amazing thing is that the film was accidentally left off the poll. Seeing that their comic book hero, detective Dylan Dog, played by Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns"), was missing from the list of films to elect, fans rallied to support the screen adaptation, accumulating enough votes to place it a mere 4% behind second place. It's no surprise that the film that placed first was juggernaut "Iron Man 2," directed by Jon Favreau. Platinum's winning streak should continue, as Favreau is expected to direct Platinum Studios' "Cowboys & Aliens." The fan outpouring for "Dead of Night" is an excellent indication that it may become the comic sleeper hit of 2010.

Hollywood takes aim at Comic Book Challenge winner "Gunplay"
Fox21 has partnered with Platinum Studios to develop a TV series based on Platinum's graphic novel and Comic Book Challenge winner "Gunplay."
"Final Destination" writer-producer Glen Morgan is on board to adapt the novel, created and written by Jorge Vega. Morgan's TV series credits include "The X-Files" and "Millennium."
"Gunplay" centers on Abner Meeks, a buffalo soldier condemned to roam the Old West with a hellish curse slung at his waist: a demonic shooting iron that forces him to kill once a day or suffer soul-searing pain.
'Gunplay' is one of those rare combinations of fantastically created characters and wonderfully told narrative, which creates an inventive canvas from which to play," Platinum Studios chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg said.
Added Fox21 president Chris Carlisle, "It is a unique story of an ordinary man who must live with an extraordinary curse."

From Vampires And Werewolves In 'Twilight' To 'Fallen' Angels
Posted 7 hrs ago by Christopher Campbell in News
FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Tired of vampires and werewolves yet? So may be Hollywood, where there seems to be a scramble to figure out what kind of fantastical creature will be the next big thing. A few months ago, we thought faeries were taking over. But now The Hollywood Reporter is claiming “angels have been identified as the next trend in young-adult fiction.”
Evidence of this supposed craze comes with the announcement that Disney is bringing Lauren Kate’s new young-adult novel “Fallen” to the big screen. The book, which is the first of a four-part series, involves a love triangle between a teen girl and two guys, both of whom are fallen angels.
Sounds like “Twilight” with cherubim, and I can already envision the “Team Daniel” and “Team Cam” t-shirts aligned to each of the angelic suitors. Angels as love interests is hardly a new concept, of course, with films like “The Bishop’s Wife,” that film’s remake, “The Preacher’s Wife,” “Date With an Angel,” “Wings of Desire” and that film’s remake, “City of Angels” all being early precursors to “Fallen.”

"Dead of Night" Fans Take Movie Poll by Storm
LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/10/09 --
On a recent poll conducted by MTV.com, the Platinum Studios, Inc. (OTCBB: PDOS) film "Dead of Night," an adaptation of the beloved Italian comic book "Dylan Dog," ranked fifth amongst all comic book movies expected to be released in 2010. The results came unexpectedly to MTV.com since the film was accidentally left off the list of nominees and all votes for the picture were write-in votes
The outpouring of support for "Dead of Night" is an early indication of the potential box office success for the film, which stars Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns") as the detective for the undead, whose business card reads "No Pulse, No Problem." Fans of the Kevin Munroe-directed film rallied more votes than the high profile comics "The Green Hornet," "The Losers," and "Red," which lines up "Dead of Night" as a potential sleeper hit in 2010. "Dylan Dog" is just one original property that hails from Platinum Studios' multi-universe library with over 5,600 comic characters
Platinum Studios Chairman and CEO and "Dead of Night" producer Scott Mitchell Rosenberg was thrilled with the results. "I am incredibly grateful for the support that propelled 'Dead of Night' near the top of the list as a write-in and I am pleased to see how strongly the fans of 'Dylan Dog' are already expressing their interest in the movie." The film is currently in post production and is expected to be released in the later half of 2010
"Iron Man 2," the follow-up to Robert Downey Jr.'s 2008 worldwide blockbuster directed by Jon Favreau, garnered 53% of the votes in the poll
Favreau's next film is expected to be "Cowboys & Aliens," another Platinum Studios' property, which is currently in pre-production, and which Rosenberg is producing along with DreamWorks' Steven Spielberg, Imagine Entertainment's Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, and writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the writing team behind the "Transformers" franchise and the resurrected "Star Trek" franchise)
In addition to "Dead of Night," a collaboration with Hyde Park Entertainment and Omnilab Media, Platinum is developing "Unique" with "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman at Walt Disney Pictures, "The Witchblade" with "Wanted" executive producer Marc Silvestri, Top Cow Productions, Inc. and Arclight Films, "Atlantis Rising" with DreamWorks, Kurtzman/Orci and director Len Wiseman ("Underworld"), "The Weapon" with Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place" star David Henrie, "Mal Chance" with Tony Krantz ("24"), "Indestructible Man" and "Gunplay" at FOX 21, "Nightfall" with Aurora Productions and an untitled feature film project at Sony Pictures Animation. Platinum's Rosenberg would serve as a producer on all film projects and an executive producer on all TV projects

YES...and to me, this is a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to promote DEAD OF NIGHT. All eyes are on us now. We showed the fan base is there and there is interest in the movie. I really hope the promoting team starts advertising soon to keep the momentum going and not waiting until this is done and forgotten and starting all over from scratch. Maybe get Brandon on Oprah, or Conan to talk about his movie.

Could Dead Of Night be the sleeper hit of 2010?
A recent MTV.com poll asked readers to pick which of next year’s comic book movies they’re most looking forward to, and the answer wasn’t all that surprising. Iron Man 2 garnered 53% of the vote, while Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World netted 11% each.
But logging in at a respectable 7% was Dead Of Night, based on the comics starring Dylan Dog, a London-based supernatural investigator whose adventures have been translated into more than a dozen languages. While that may not seem like a big number, what makes it impressive is Dead Of Night had been left off the poll, meaning the 7% was the result of fan outpouring and a write-in campaign.
Despite its initial disadvantage, the Kevin Munroe-directed film, which stars Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as Dog, took a larger percentage of the vote than The Green Hornet, The Losers, or Red, which are based on seemingly higher-profile properties. But will this translate into bigger ticket sales? Admittedly, the numbers could change after the various studios kick off their ad campaigns and word of mouth spreads, but Hyde Park Films and Platinum Studios — which financed Dead Of Night — should take this as a good sign that a passionate fan base does exist for their movie.
Created by Italian comics writer and novelist Tiziano Sclavi, Dylan Dog has been published since 1986. He is a struggling "nightmare investigator" recognizable for his red shirt, black jacket, and blue jeans, which he always wears. Dog has numerous phobias, as well as an assistant named Groucho who is a punning doppelganger for Groucho Marx.
The film is scheduled to open in Italy in March 2010, but has no firm U.S. release date yet.

Mickey Mouse sues Donald Duck. Yes, really
By Eriq Gardner
If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it still may not be a duck.
That's the only conclusion we can draw from seeing that Mickey Mouse has filed a trademark infringement claim against Donald Duck yesterday in Florida Southern District Court.
Yes, an actual lawsuit was filed by an apparently clever and totally anonymous prankster.
Mickey Mouse is being represented by Juan Abagado. ("Abagado" means "lawyer" in Spanish.) Donald Duck is being represented by Pluto. And the deputy clerk in the case is Goofy, who has issued the summons.

OT:The Old West Meets the Undead: PCA/ACA Call for Papers
Oct 12 2009
CaptainHookThe combination of certain genres don’t work for me. In this case the Old West connecting with horror, specifically in the form of cowboys combined with zombies, vampires, and other horror icons, but apparently they work for some people and have become the focus of academic consideration. Following is a call for papers from the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association on the topic:
Call for Papers: Undead in the West
PCA/ACA National Conference
March 31-April 3, 2010
St. Louis, Missouri
Deadline: December 1, 2009
Co-presenters are being sought for a panel on the “Undead in the West,” as part of the Westerns and the West area at the PCAs.
The frontier has long been framed as a landscape of life and death, but few scholarly works have ventured into the realm where the two become one, to explore portrayals of the Undead in the West – the zombies, vampires, mummies, and others that have lumbered, crept, shambled, and swooped into the Western from other genres. This sub-genre, while largely a post-1990 phenomenon, traces it roots to much deeper hybrid traditions of Westerns and horror or science fiction, and yet, shows ties to the recent A-Western renaissance. What happens when traditional frontier figures, settings, symbols, and ideologies encounter these characters that defy the laws of nature? How are Western archetypes subverted or accentuated when confronted by the undead? How do zombies, vampires, and the like, affect our understandings and interpretations of the West, and vice-versa?
Might these hybrid Westerns function as the new anti-western, or do the undead facilitate a return to tradition?
Other possible issues include, bur are not limited to:
– Do vampires and zombies map on to traditional Western “bad guys,” such as Indians, Mexicans, and outlaws? Have zombies become a “safe” substitute for Indians as aliens have for foreign soldiers in stories of war and invasion?
– How do the conventions of the Western intersect with the conventions of the Undead movie . . . Do the movies play with either set of conventions for dramatic effect (James Woods’ character Jack Crow as a vampire-hunting version of Clint Eastwood’s amoral Western avengers) or comic relief (the zombie sheriff and prostitute in Deadwalkers)?
– Do undead Westerns consciously use the Undead elements of the plot to comment on the nature of traditional Western heroes and villains?
These questions and more may be asked of films of the Old West, or the new, such as Bubba Ho-tep (2002), when a Stetson-wearing mummy menaces a nursing home in the East Texas backwater; From Dusk ‘til Dawn (1996), when vampires prey on unsuspecting patrons of a Mexican bar; It Came From the West (2007), the puppet zombie Western from Denmark; or Purgatory (1999), where the frontier town of Refuge serves as liminal space between
heaven and hell; and numerous other tales of the Undead in the West.
Papers presented in “Undead in the West” at the PCAs may also be considered for a larger post-conference project.
Please send your 250-350- word abstract to both co-organizers, Cindy Miller (cymiller@tiac.net) and Bow Van Riper (bvanriper@bellsouth.net). Deadline for submissions is December 1, 2009.

Results of poll.
Dead of Night" also had decent showings, with the latter receiving 7 percent of the total vote via a big outpouring of fan support and an active write-in campaign. (I'd accidentally left the Brandon Routh-starring film out of the poll.)

Cowboys & Aliens II – Alana Joli Abbott & Jeremy Mohler Interview
Paul Green [PG]: Can you describe the premise of the sequel.
Jeremy Mohler [JM]: Initially, we were planning to expand on the invasion and show how the aliens attacked across the whole world at once. We wanted to show a variety of the different plans of attack the aliens had and tell each of the various stories. However, as we were developing this plan, news came up about the actual Cowboys and Aliens movie and we had to change our plan a bit to feature the main characters only.
PG : How did you become involved in the sequel to Cowboys & Aliens?
JM: Platinum Studios actually contacted me. They had seen my work on my personal content world Baeg Tobar and wanted me to help organize, further create the world for Cowboys and Aliens, and develop a sequel for Cowboys and Aliens.
Alana Joli Abbott [AJA]: Jeremy Mohler, who I’d previously worked with on a fantasy worldbuilding project called Baeg Tobar (which I’m now working on again!) contacted me to ask if I’d like to work on a comics project for Platinum. I was enthusiastic — and I was even more excited when he told me what it was going to be about. Aliens? The Old West? Twisting that old trope of Cowboys and Indians so that they were a team rather than adversaries? I was delighted! Jeremy also wanted us to focus on the actual, real-world history, and I was glad to have a chance to learn more details about an era I’d loved in fiction.
PG: Is the alternate title Cowboys & Aliens: Worlds At War intended to supplant the original Cowboys & Aliens II title?
AJA: Originally, that was going to be the title for the second volume and spinoff, but due to the movie, they decided to just go with “II” and planned to make Worlds at War a completely stand alone, independent project.
PG: Are web comics a viable alternative to printed comic books?
AJA: I think it’s becoming more and more true that they are — but I think it also depends on the purpose of the comics. Guys like R. K. Millholland (Something Positive) manage to bring in enough through donations to make a living on the comic (or, at least, did the last time I checked). Rich Burlew of Order of the Stick has changed the model so that he’s built up his following online and is able to sell tie-ins and books that reprint his online work. I think that second model is the one that’s most likely to be sustained in the long run — people who love your work for free will pay for it so that they can hold it as a print version. Will all the people who love your work buy your product? Probably not. But I suspect it’s a big enough market that it has the potential to pay out for the rock stars of our industry. The rest of us will probably have to keep our day jobs. :)
JM: Honestly, I hope that the printed comic (or graphic novel) never goes away and I strongly feel that it won’t. But, I have to admit, I am really in love with the idea of web comics. Web comics are cheaper to produce and have the potential for a much wider audience than printed comics. Especially for small press. I think in the next few years as people start to realize this and the quality of web comics starts to catch up with the printed comics, I think a lot of interesting things are going to start to happen.
PG: Do you think the Weird Western genre has a future or is it the final gasps of a dying Western genre?
AJA: Honestly, I think the Western genre is growing and expanding in new and exciting ways, rather than dying off. I know that there are arguments about this in the industry all the time — those of us who work in Weird Westerns think it’s just a natural progression of the exploration of those themes that made us really love Westerns: the frontier, people doing their best with limited resources on the edge of civilization, that sort of thing. The more we can continue making the flavor of the West relevant to a modern audience, especially updating some of the ideas that make old Westerns harder to love (particularly the treatment of Native Americans), the more likely the Western is to thrive in all of its formats.
JM: Oh, definitely. There are always going to be people that love westerns, especially weird, sci-fi, fantasy westerns.
PG: Why was the sequel abandoned after only two chapters were completed?
JM: Actually, the project has been put on hold, not abandoned. We are waiting for the release of the movie to get a little closer and then we’re going to reassess the project and see about starting again.
AJA: Abandoned is such a harsh and sad word. The team was ready to keep going with the comic — I had several more pages written, and I think there was more art in development — when Platinum put us on hiatus. It’s sort of a pipe dream of mine that one day they’ll ask us to come back on and continue working on it (especially with the recent buzz about Robert Downey, Jr. playing Zeke in the film version!). I’d be delighted — but at this juncture, the team has all had to move on to different projects to keep working.
PG: Do you think the proposed Cowboys & Aliens movie project will result in the sequel finding a new audience and lead to completion of the sequel?
AJA: I hope so! We had both Cowboys and Aliens II and another alien invasion story, set in a similar time frame but featuring a big city reporter and the situation in several other countries, in the pipeline. I’d love to get back to both projects.
JM: Yes, I do.
PG: Are there any plans for future work in the Weird Westerns genre?
AJA: I have a short story that I’m quite proud of on submission to SpaceWesterns.com, which I hope someday sees publication. I’m also looking forward to my friend Jeff Duntemann’s Drumlin project, which I may have the chance to work on. (Jeff wrote a brilliant short story, “Drumlin Boiler,” which was published in Asimov’s in April, 2002. It’s one of my all time favorite space western stories, and he’s talked on his web column about the possibility of expanding that world with multiple authors.)
PG: What project are you currently working on?
JM: I’m actually working on several projects at the moment. One is my personal content world, Baeg Tobar, a rather massive fantasy/sci-fi world with comics, novels, short stories, and all manner of other content. I also have several other things in the works, but nothing that I can really show at the moment.
AJA: I’m working on some adventure writing for Wizards of the Coast’s Living Forgotten Realms campaign, book reviews for industry journals, and a serial novel for Baeg Tobar with Max Gladstone (who has a really excellent space Western short story up at SpaceWesterns.com
PG: As you know the sequel is an alternative history science fiction Western. Do you enjoy weaving historical facts into a fictional premise?
AJA: That was some of the most fun I had on the series. When we had initially talked about how often we were going to update, we talked about two “art light” projects that wouldn’t require panels. One was the “microcorder” sessions, in which I got to talk about what all of the characters who were journeying into space were thinking about. The other was a column, essentially, of Zeke talking about historical facts, portraying them in his own way. For this, we linked to different sources so people could look into the stories without Zeke’s casual way of talking. I was also very much looking forward to working in some of the history about the Chinese in America, which is one of the topics that I’m glad more weird Western writers are exploring. (Emma Bull did a fabulous job with this in her fantasy Western, Territory.) There are so many stories to mine there! There are these great tales of how people on the fringes of society anyway were the first to be able to look past the things that were strict boundaries for their “civilized” counterparts — white folks who were able to grow and develop friendships across racial (or national, in the case of the Irish) lines. If we do get to go back to it, I’m looking forward to further diversifying the cast as the story progresses (once we get Zeke back to the West and out of Washington, D.C. *g*)

FYI- Its a fake.
Hey, everyone. The movie poster is definitely a fake. We've never seen or approved that. Pretty convincing job by somebody, though.

Agree...Diet Pomegranate soda, Now that does sound gross.
Nice debate going on the Dead of Night blog as to why the movie got missed on MTVs 2010 movie poll. There has to be a way to get this movies noticed without spending tons of cash. Free Publicity does wonders. It worked for Paranormal.IMO only

Dan,
I’m the editor of Splash Page, and I acknowledged several times in the comment section that I’d completely forgotten about Dead of Night when I created the poll. Unfortunately, I can’t add an extra option to an in-progress poll. However, I encouraged fans to vote for “Dead of Night” in the “other” category, and I’ll make sure to count up all the votes manually to make sure it’s represented right with the rest of the films.
I’m a bit surprised that you’re saying we haven’t given the film any love, as we’ve covered every major and minor development in the project since its beginnings, and interviewed Brandon about it on several occasions. Here’s an archive of our coverage thus far:
http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/dead-of-night
Heck, I’d go so far as to say we’ve covered “Dead of Night” more than most sites out there!
Feel free to send an email my way, as I’d love to hear more about the movie… but as it is, I haven’t heard a word from anyone involved with it in quite a while!

OT: DreamWorks Animation inks deal with THQ
Videogame pact covers 'Kung Fu Panda,' 'Puss in Boots'
By MARC GRASER
An expansion of DreamWorks Animation's film and TV slate is proving beneficial for videogame publishers.
THQ, which had already been developing a game for the toon studio's upcoming "MegaMind" (formerly "Oobermind"), has inked a multi-year deal with DreamWorks to exclusively produce games for all platforms based on "Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom" and "Puss in Boots," as well as the TV series "The Penguins of Madagascar."
Rival gamemaker Activision has long been producing most of DreamWorks' games, including those for the "Shrek" franchise, "Madagascar," "Bee Movie," "Shark Tale," "Over the Hedge" and the first "Kung Fu Panda." It has games for "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Shrek Forever After" out next year. Its deal with DreamWorks is up for renegotiation when it expires next summer.
With DreamWorks Animation planning to unspool five films every two years, in addition to TV shows and specials, executives there felt they needed to divide up the development of its games in order to guarantee that the titles would be ready for release whenever a filmed property bows.
"Now that we're expanding our pipeline, the volume of work is significant," said Kerry Phelan, head of worldwide consumer products for DreamWorks Animation. "We looked at who really understands the market of family games and figured out who could be the best partners for us."

Marc Silvestri discusses 'Image United' and big 2010
Q. Rumor has it, you've recently been ironing out details for The Darkness movie. Can you tell us who's involved with the film and when we might see a release date?
A. I get yelled at a lot when I talk about this stuff! I'll just say that yes, we're in development, and we do have castings and a studio attached. It's going to be a big-budget movie, but that's all I can say as far as details go. I'll just say that if it's done the way we want to do it, it will look a lot different than films that are out there today. It'll be groundbreaking.
I'll also mention that we're going to be getting some of the best writers out there to do this. Witchblade is another title that has moved pretty far into pre-production right now. With both of these — really, with everything we put out at Top Cow — we want to take our time and make sure we don't do anything that's going to be detrimental to the property.

OT: New Moon' shines at box office
'Twilight' sequel nabs $140.7 million
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK
Biting off the third best weekend opening of all time with $140.7 million from 4,024 theaters, Summit Entertainment's female-fueled "New Moon" explodes the myth that you need an all-audience film to do that level of biz, or that fanboys hold all the power.
At the international B.O., the vampire romancer bowed to $118.1 million from 6,681 prints in 26 territories for a sparkling worldwide opening total of $258.8 million.
The power of femmes also astounded with the overperformance of Warner Bros.' Sandra Bullock sports drama "The Blind Side," which debuted domestically to an estimated $34.5 million from 3,110 theaters. Together, "New Moon" and "Blind Side" led the second-best weekend ever in terms of total ticket receipts. (The "New Moon" aud was approximately 80% female, "Blind Side's," 59%.)
Domestic B.O. revs for the weekend are estimated around $250 million; the only weekend to do more was "The Dark Knight" open-ing frame. That July 2008 sesh saw roughly $260 million in ticket sales.
Distributors were exuberant over the results, particularly as it occurred outside summer. They are hoping it portends a lucrative Thanksgiving, which brings a crop of new films.
The third new wide release of the frame was Sony's kiddie toon "Planet 51." Pic, distributed on behalf of Spain's Ilion Animation, debuted to $12.6 million from 3,035 theaters, coming in No. 4. It was easily beat out for No. 3 by Sony's own "2012," which declined 59% in its second frame to an estimated $26.5 million for a cume of $108.2 million.
Overseas, "2012" grossed $100.5 million from 107 markets for a cume of $341.1 million and a stupendous worldwide total of $449.3 million in its first 10 days.
The specialty B.O. continued to see strong results for Lionsgate's "Precious." Drama grossed $11 million as it expanded to a total of 629 theaters domestically for a per-location average of $17,500 and cume of $21.4 million in its third sesh. Film came in No. 6 overall.
Among specialty openers, Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces" opened to $107,597 from two theaters in New York for a location average of $53,798. Sony Pictures Classics is distributing.
First Look saw a soft debut for Werner Herzog's Nicolas Cage topliner "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans." Pic grossed an estimated $257,267 from 27 theaters for a location average of $9,528.
Twentieth Century Fox's animated "Fantastic Mr. Fox" held well in its second frame, grossing an estimated $199,142 from four locations for a foxy theater average of $49,786 and cume of $557,678. Voiced by George Clooney and Meryl Streep, the Wes Anderson-directed family/prestige film expands nationwide on Wednesday.
After "Embraces" and "Mr. Fox," "New Moon" grabbed the third-best location average of the weekend at $34,965.
"New Moon" -- grossing nearly double "Twilight's" $69.6 million debut a year ago -- began breaking records not long after it unspooled at 12:01 a.m. Friday, securing itself a spot in the pantheon of hit franchise pics and marking a huge victory for Summit.
Sequel grossed $26.3 million in midnight runs, besting record-holder "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" ($22.2 million).
Full Friday number clocked in at $72.7 million -- including midnight grosses -- the best opening day in history and beating the $67.2 million earned by "Dark Knight" on its first Friday.
Heading into the weekend, rival studios believed "New Moon" would have trouble going north of $110 million, since it is driven by only two out of four quadrants of the moviegoing audience: Females under 25, and those over. Even Summit execs might have agreed.
But the ferocious appetite for the franchise among girls and younger women proved those predictions wrong. Of the females turning out, a full 50% were under 21.
"This blew away a lot of preconceived notions about who you should play to, and how you get to a certain group," Summit prexy of distribution Richie Fay said.
Despite Friday's huge numbers, "New Moon" declined only about 41% on Saturday, the same drop "Twilight" had sen. That indicates that the fanbase has grown, since "New Moon" did so much more for the weekend.
For years, studios have relied on fanboy-driven films or families for big opening grosses. Thanks to long lives, female properties can ultimately see big grosses; they just haven't opened so big.
"Twilight" cumed $192.8 million domestically and $192.2 million at the foreign B.O. for a worldwide total of $385 million. All eyes will be on "New Moon" to see by how much it might eclipse that total.
For the last year, Summit has carried out a well-orchestrated marketing campaign for the sequel, directed by Chris Weitz and returning Kristen Stewart and teen heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner in the lead roles.
Sales of Stephenie Meyers' four-book "Twilight" series also have continued to climb. Two years ago, 1 million copies had sold worldwide. Today, that figure stands at 85 million.
As in the U.S., "New Moon" is shining overseas, outgunning or matching franchises "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings." It scored the top opening of all time in Australia ($13.3 million), New Zealand ($2.6 million) and the Philippines ($2.1 million). "New Moon" generated enormous business in Europe, led by the U.K. ($18.7 million), France ($17 million), Spain ($13.7 million) and Italy ($13 million). It also generated plenty of interest in Latin America. Summit owns worldwide rights to the film, but it is being released via local distribs overseas.
Summit releases the next title in the franchise, "Eclipse," on June 30, 2010. Just as "New Moon" worked with femme fans, so did "Blind Side." Film received an A+ from CinemaScore.
Warners prexy of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said that 75% of the audience was over age 25, meaning it got older women not so distracted by "New Moon."
"Blind Side" delivered Bullock the top opening of her career, besting the $33.6 million opening of Disney's "The Proposal" in June. Film is based on the real-life story of Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Michael Oher, played by Quinton Aaron.
Also starring Tim McGraw, "Blind Side" was financed and produced by Alcon Entertainment. Opening was Alcon's best to date.
"The movie did well in all markets, but we saw outstanding results in small towns and middle-sized markets," Fellman said. "And I think younger people will start to gravitate to us. I think they were busy this weekend."

'Twilight' Meets 'Youngblood' (Again): Rob Liefeld Describes 'Badrock' Screenplay By 'New Moon' Director
Posted 37 minutes ago by Rick Marshall in Image Comics, News
The worlds of comic books and "Twilight" overlapped unexpectedly back in August when "Youngblood" director Brett Ratner mentioned a desire to see "Twilight Saga" star Robert Pattinson in the lead role for the superhero team-up movie. Now, on the eve of the "New Moon" premiere, we have another "Twilight"/"Youngblood" crossover for you.
"Youngblood" creator Rob Liefeld revealed on Twitter earlier today that "New Moon" director Chris Weitz had drafted a script in 1996 for a movie based on Badrock, one of the fan-favorite Youngblood superheroes. Describing the screenplay as a "Beavis/Butthead/South Parky take on a kid superhero," Liefeld said studio New Line balked at the film's initial budget and eventually dropped the project.
I got in touch with Liefeld to find out more info about the "Badrock" movie that never happened, how Weitz got involved and some details about the film's plot.
MTV: So if I understand your updates on Twitter correctly, Chris Weitz wrote a "Badrock" script in 1996? How did he get connected with the character?
ROB LIEFELD: New Line Cinema optioned "Badrock" as a film. They dug the story of a kid whose life was so crap that he took his father's experimental, government-funded super serum and transformed himself into a gigantic, indestructible boy of stone.
It was another film in the style of "The Mask," which had been so successful for New Line. Studio chief Mike Deluca hired Chris Weitz and his brother Paul to write the script. They had just finished "Antz" for Dreamworks and they accepted the assignment and turned in a great, great script.
MTV: Did you ever meet with Chris Weitz about it?
LIEFELD: Yeah, we met several times, we talked about the comics. The source material was a two-part origin story I had done for "Youngblood: Strikefile" that dealt with the aftermath of the day Badrock transformed and the government took him into protective custody to study him.
MTV: Did Youngblood appear in the script? Who was the bad guy?
LIEFELD: The bad guy was Blackrock, a candidate for the super-soldier project that Badrock's father was developing who takes an amped-up version of the same serum in order to defeat Badrock after he escapes. ... There was no Youngblood appearance, but a mention of an organization that could maximize Badrock's powers and abilities is suggested at the close of the film... in the same vein as [Nick] Fury in "Iron Man."
MTV: You mentioned it was a "Beavis & Butthead/Southpark"-style story. What else can you say about it?
LIEFELD: The Beavis/Butthead/South Park of it all was the approach to Badrock as a real kid from a broken home with such irreverence and attitude. He super-farts and knocks a group of kids unconscious at a concert, and stage-dives and nearly kills the kids in the mosh pit.
He quickly realizes the extent of his power and strength and has some real teenage anger with a destructive shell to express all his frustration. He has a teen friend who is helping hide him, and it's very much in the vein of Tom Hank's "Big." The script was sweet, funny and action-packed.
MTV: You said studios balked at the price tag, but how close did it get to being produced?
LIEFELD: When the script came in at the start of 1997, the entire movie industry was cutting costs left and right, and the budget on the "Badrock" film was tagged at close to $75 million. New Line wanted a movie closer to $55 million.
The climactic battle between Badrock and Blackrock was very similar to the Hulk vs. Abomination scene, and the pair were going to destroy Los Angeles, tearing up the Groman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood and Vine... it was a huge, all-CGI fight. The cost of Badrock being CGI the entire film became a budgetary problem. You can see that the "Fantastic Four" films never bit on that aspect with The Thing either.
Chris and Paul Weitz followed all the studio notes and turned in a scaled-down script, then "Lost in Space" came out and tanked for New Line, following disappointing returns on "Spawn," and they backed away from big-budget films for several years until diving into "Lord of the Rings."
I've followed the careers of both Weitz brothers with great enthusiasm, and they have proven over and over again how ridiculously talented they are. I believe this is the only script they wrote that has not been produced. I'll probably adapt their "Badrock" script as a comic book in the next year: "Badrock: The Comic Book Adaptation Of The Movie That Never Was."
Would you like to see a "Badrock" movie? Let us know what you think in the comment section or on Twitter!

OT; have you seen the previews for the Wolfman trailer. Looks to be well done. I think if this is good and werewolves take off, platinum should pump "Big Badz" as a werewolf movie next. Vampires and zombies are still good, but IMO, the market will be oversaturated by the time these movies come out years later. But its still good for now, and, lets not forget ghosts. Wonder what happened to "Ghosting". Im still seeing alot of "searching for ghosts" movies on tv. Still seem to be popular.
IMO Only

'Nightfall' Optioned, Sends Vampires To Prison
Posted 4 hrs ago by Blair Marnell in News, Platinum Studios
Nightfall Platinum Studios and Aurora Productions are adapting Scott O. Brown and Ferran Xalabarder’s original graphic novel “Nightfall” into a feature film.
“Nightfall” was first published in 2007 and follows a right-wing survivalist named David Paxton who is sentenced to a brutal Texas prison that is secretly run by vampires using the inmates as livestock.
According to Variety, Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg is attached as an executive producer, along with William Stuart. Former Universal Pictures senior executive Randy Greenberg negotiated the deal with Platinum and will also be an executive producer on the project.
"Nightfall is an extraordinary opportunity to make a fantastic horror/thriller in a genre which is unbelievably hot right now," said Stuart. "Platinum Studios has wonderful creative depth and a proven ability to make things happen."
While Platinum’s claim that it has “a library of characters as large as Marvel's” may have raised some eyebrows, the company has been extremely successful at optioning its comics in Hollywood.
In addition to feature film adaptations of “Cowboys & Aliens” with director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr., “Dead of Night” with Brandon Routh, “Atlantis Rising” and “Mal Chance”; Platinum has also teamed with Fox21 for two potential TV series based on “Gunplay” and “Indestructible Man.”
Platinum has also signed deals with Top Cow to produce the adaptations of “Witchblade” and “Magdalena.”
Does the premise of “Nightfall” sound intriguing? What do you think about Platinum’s claim about its library of characters? Sound off in the comment section or take a bite out of Twitter!
