Robson technology (Intel Turbo Mem) will be available on Intel’s forthcoming Santa Rosa platform—the next-generation mobile platform building on the power savings and performance benefits of Intel® Centrino® processor technology. Robson technology is designed to support two new features of the upcoming Microsoft Vista* operating system: ReadyBoost* and ReadyDrive* technologies.
http://www.intel.com/technology/magazine/computing/robson-1206.htm
Robson Technology Architecture
Robson technology consists of four components:
Robson driver. This is the heart of Robson technology—the Robson driver interfaces to Microsoft Vista’s ReadyDrive and ReadyBoost technologies, interfaces to the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager driver, and provides all the control functions necessary for managing NAND flash in a caching role.
Intel® NAND flash memory. Robson cards are powered by Intel NAND memory that offers 40 Mb/s reads and 12-15 Mb/s writes.
Diamond Lake ASIC controller. This controller translates the system’s PCI Express signals to the Intel NAND memory and manages the retirement of Flash memory blocks as needed.
[This uses MRVL flash cache controller.]
OROM BIOS. Robson technology includes BIOS-level option ROM (OROM) code which manages NAND access before the OS and drivers load. The OROM also controls separation handling, critical to maintaining data integrity.

416MHz Marvell PXA27x Palm Foleo
http://blog.scifi.com/tech/archives/2007/08/11/foleo_details_e.html
The Palm Foleo, the poorly-received new half-laptop that the fate of the company is resting on, just had some more details revealed about it, and boy are they exciting.
You're looking at a 416 MHz Intel/Marvell PXA27x, a Marathon 2700G graphics processor, 256MB of non-volatile flash memory, and 128MB of RAM for general application use. There's also A CompactFlash slot, an SD slot, and a USB port for external peripherals. So basically you're looking at a seriously underpowered non-laptop that merely extends your phone to have a full keyboard and a bigger screen. Sucks to be you, Palm. — Adam Frucci

First Call's MRVL 3Q07 rev growth is 6% = $683.7MM
http://seekingalpha.com/article/35907
Offsetting the seasonality, we expect resumed growth from our consumer wireless LAN products and stable market conditions for our communication and application processors, Prestera networking and printer ASIC products. Based on the above factors, we believe that our Q2 revenues should increase to approximately $645 million.
We expect Q2 gross margin percentage to improve slightly from our Q1 gross margin percentage and our Q2 pro forma operating expenses to again increase at a rate slightly ahead of our rate of revenue growth. Although we are investing in a number of new product initiatives, we also remain focused on controlling our expense growth and expect our expenses to grow at a rate below our rate of revenue growth in the second half of the year.
First Call's MRVL 3Q07 rev growth is 6% sequentially.
$645MM (Q2 rev) * 1.06 = $683.7 MM
The St. follows First Call consensus estimate and rev growth.
BRCM guided 3% rev growth for Q3.
$750MM would have been 16.3% seq. growth. Very few co. in the world can do that in Q3 nowadays.
It's all about managing expectation correctly. This is the game Wall St. plays. The lower the bar, the easier the co. can clear it.

Three of top-4 motherboard makers see growth in July shipments
http://digitimes.com/mobos/a20070810PD203.html
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Friday 10 August 2007]
With the peak season approaching, first-tier motherboard makers all saw growth in their July shipments except Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), which was the only maker to suffer a decline, according to sources at the makers.
Asustek Computer announced July consolidated revenues of NT$45.91 billion (US$1.39 billion), an increase of 6.2% compared to NT$43.22 billion in June this year and an increase of 10.8% compared to the same month a year previous. Accumulated revenues for the first seven months of 2007 were NT$408.28 billion, an increase of 68.8% on year.
Asustek shipped 4.85 million motherboards, 500,000-550,000 notebooks and 980,000 graphics cards in July, while accumulated shipments for the first seven months reached 33.43 million units, 3.0-3.1 million units and 6.76 million units, respectively, noted sources at Asustek.
Asustek expects to achieve its goals of shipping 7 million notebooks and 63 million motherboards, and to reach consolidated revenues of NT$750-800 billion in 2007.
Micro-Star International (MSI) recorded non-consolidated revenues of NT$7.7 billion in July, an increase of 18% on month and 35.03% on year. Accumulated revenues for the first seven months were NT$46.99 billion, an increase of 21.45% compared to NT$38.69 billion in the same period in 2006.
MSI shipped around 1.40 million motherboards and 900,000 graphics cards in July.

Buffalo's MRVL Wireless-N Nfiniti dual-band gigabit router and access point
Home transportation: benchmarking power line, 802.11, and Ethernet
http://www.edn.com/article/CA6462560.html?q=home+transportation
Most currently available 248-Mbps draft 802.11n access points and routers employ only the specification's 2.4-GHz frequency band (reference 8 and reference 9). At least two notable, dual-band—2.4- and 5.8-GHz—exceptions exist, however: Apple's Airport Extreme N router, which uses an Atheros Communications chip set, and Buffalo Technology's Wireless-N Nfiniti dual-band gigabit router and access point, which the company built on a Marvell Semiconductor silicon foundation. One key difference between the two products is that, whereas Apple's router includes a three-port, 100-Mbit Category 5 switch and similarly offers a 100-Mbit WAN (wide-area-network) port, the four LAN and one WAN connections on the Buffalo router are all GbE (gigabit-Ethernet)-capable. To test whether this disparity in performance potential would translate to a real-life differential, I disconnected the desktop PC from my LAN and instead connected it to the Apple and Buffalo products' LAN ports, thereby using them as routers versus employing them only as access points, as you can alternatively configure them. One other reason to nit-pick about the Apple router was that, instead of providing a Web-browser-based configuration like the other access points and router I tested, it, like the power-line adapters, required that the user install a stand-alone OS X- and Windows-compatible administrator utility. I prefer the browser-based approach because the interface would be largely unaffected by obsolescence or changes in both operating systems and browsers.
For 802.11n, I was attempting to mate a Broadcom-designed wireless module in my MacBook with routers based on Atheros and Marvell ICs. The predictable immaturity of the draft 802.11n standard is, I think, evident in the results. TCP transfers through the Apple router were faster than those through the Buffalo router, due in part, perhaps, to the fact that the same company makes both the laptop and the former router and, therefore, they have more robust interoperability. However, for UDP transfers, the Buffalo router was notably superior in the achievable bandwidth it supported. The 2.4- and 5.8-GHz results for each router were largely comparable, at least in my 802.11-friendly configuration and environment.
HannStar Board and GCE both revise up notebook PCB shipments target
http://digitimes.com/bits_chips/a20070809PD209.html
Leading notebook printed circuit board (PCB) makers HannStar Board and Gold Circuit Electronics (GCE) both revised up their notebook PCB shipment targets for 2007, citing stronger-than-expected demand in the third quarter.
Already seeing demand outpacing seasonal patterns in the second quarter, HannStar Board and GCE, which are respectively expected to account for 38% and 24-25% of the global market, have observed an influx of urgent orders.
HannStar Board projects its quarterly sales will grow 15-20% sequentially in the third quarter, citing a present order visibility of six weeks. The company anticipates that its August sales will hit a record. Citing buoyant demand, HannStar Board has revised up its annual shipments target from 36 million units to 38 million, noting that shipments of 40 million units are also likely.
GCE is also seeing strong demand with order visibility now extending through October. In addition to seeing strong demand from notebook customers, the company reiterated that demand from MP3 player and optoelectronics customers is becoming stronger in the second half of 2007. Its revised shipments target is above 24 million units, up mildly from the originally expected 24 million.
In order to meet growing demand, both companies plan to expand their capacity. HannStar Board will add 450,000 and 600,000 square feet of capacity in August and September, respectively. GCE, which is already reportedly adding 600,000 square feet of capacity at its Changshu, China plant, should add add another 400,000 square feet of capacity at its Suzhou plant by 2008.

Asustek launches quad-LAN server motherboard
Press release, August 9; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Thursday 9 August 2007]
To accommodate requirements in mass storage and fast transfer speeds in intranet applications of SMBs (small and medium business), Asustek Computer recently launched its P5M2-E/4L quad-LAN motherboard designed for servers.
The P5M2-E/4L, with a built in quad-LAN that integrates four high-speed Gigabit LAN ports into a single one, provides almost four times the transfer bandwidth. Even if an error occurs in one port, the network connection will not be affected in any way, according to Asustek.
Strict networking performance tests have shown that the quad-LAN of the P5M2-E/4L can improve transfer performances up to 390% in comparison to a single LAN. Additionally, the four ports can also be used in individual sub-nets to provide secure data and smoother transfers.
In terms of storage capacity and data reliability, the P5M2-E/4L has two built-in 4-port SATA controllers with doubled quad-SATA RAID protection. The P5M2-E/4L offers more than 4TB (terabyte) of storage expandability with reliable data protection, according to Asustek.

Digital TV chip market to double by 2011, says iSuppli
http://digitimes.com/bits_chips/a20070808PR200.html
[Most Digital TV will have 802.11n. MRVL is well position for it.]
Press release, August 8; Emily Chuang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 8 August 2007]
Booming sales of digital TVs (DTVs) during the coming years will yield huge opportunities for semiconductor suppliers, with revenue from shipments of chips for this segment expected to double from 2006 to 2011, research firm iSuppli predicts.
Global DTV semiconductor market revenues will rise to US$14.2 billion in 2011, expanding from US$7.1 billion in 2006. Total semiconductor revenues include the chips on DTV audio/video boards as well as those in other segments of the TVs, including the input/output circuitry, the drivers, audio and the power supply. It also encompasses voltage regulators, LCD drivers, backlight inverters, plasma display panel (PDP) drivers and the digital light processing (DLP), LCD and liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) chips for rear-projection TVs (RPTVs).
"The growth of the DTV chip market parallels the expansion of the DTV market itself," said Shyam Nagrani, principal analyst for display electronics at iSuppli. "Global DTV shipments will rise to 230 million units by 2011, nearly three times the 77.4 million in 2006."
Huge market gain
There are many reasons for this huge market gain. Beyond consumer preferences for flat-panel TVs, which are inherently digital, there are a series of upcoming government-mandated transitions from analog to digital television-starting with the United States. On February 17, 2009, all US analog broadcasts will be turned off. Europe, Japan, Korea and other nations have their own looming dates for the analog cut off and transition to DTV sets, with most countries converting to fully digital transmissions by 2015.
"Consumer interest in DTV is being stimulated by the very attractive form factors of flat-panel TVs-and even more so by major price declines," Nagrani said.
The two main components of DTVs – glass and semiconductors – are experiencing rapid decreases in prices. Declines in glass prices are expected to continue, especially for the larger-size LCD panels 40 inches and bigger. This is due to expanding production capacities at new advanced-generation fabs, which can build the larger panels more economically.
LCD panel prices have declined by more than 35% during each of the past two years. Price declines will not be so substantial in the years to come, but they have brought the price of flat-panel DTVs into an affordable range for a large number of consumers. The fall in semiconductor prices is due to greater chip integration and economies of scale resulting from the rapidly growing volumes.
HD rising
When compared with the traditional analog content that the world is accustomed to, image quality for digital content is significantly improved. High-definition (HD) content, along with digital interfaces like HDMI, already is available from many sources, including cable and satellite. Such content also is starting to become available in optical storage solutions, with the arrival of the next-generation DVD formats: HD-DVD and Blu-ray.
Camcorders, some of the new digital cameras, game consoles and even personal media players (PMPs) are starting to support HD resolutions.
The next-generation DVD-player market will grow to more than 37 million units in 2011, up from a very small 100,000 units in 2006. Camcorders are quickly moving to 100% HD penetration. Digital still cameras also will move to HD, although their high-definition penetration rate will not rise as quickly as for the camcorders.
All of these factors are causing a snowball effect on the DTV set and DTV chip markets, making them some of the most promising segments of the consumer electronics markets for the foreseeable future. For semiconductor suppliers, the next few years will be a period of rapidly rising sales-and opportunity-in the DTV market.

Seagate’s D.A.V.E. will be your mobile device’s new best friend
http://blogs.zdnet.com/mobile-gadgeteer/?p=277
I was reading my RSS feeds and became quite excited when I read Robert Scoble's post on the upcoming Seagate D.A.V.E. device since I think it can solve all of my portable storage needs. The reason I buy large external storage cards for my mobile devices is to place video and audio content on them for viewing and listening to on the go. D.A.V.E. (Digital Audio Video Experience) is a portable hard drive (10GB and 20GB models should be available at launch) with a USB port and integrated Bluetooth 2.0 and 802.11b/g WiFi radios. Even better news is that software for Symbian and Windows Mobile (the two leading mobile operating systems) is already written and should be available when the D.A.V.E. becomes available in May or June of this year. Wouldn't it be cool if the Sony PSP could access D.A.V.E. via WiFi?
Scoble reports that D.A.V.E. should have up to 14 days of standby power and 10 hours of continuous use. This should make those airplane trips even more enjoyable.
I can now stick with my 1GB storage cards for application installation and use D.A.V.E. to store all of my multimedia content that can then be streamed to different mobile devices so I no longer should have to load my Yahoo! Music on multiple cards to listen to on multiple devices. This thing will save me time and money while also allowing me multiple options for storing and accessing data. The drive is also shock sensitive and will park and even lock when drops are sensed. I am sold and will be picking one up as soon as they are available.
Check out the press release for more details. Also, make sure to watch Scoble's 13 minute video for more information and a perspective on the size of the device.

Further dedicated digging by Kevin uncovered that the Marvell part number most likely is 88F5181 (i.e. w/o the dash seen on the chip surface above), which would make this a standard ARM-based CPU designed to run 802.11n access points (who would have thought...). So Kevin gets two prizes: one for showing me the error of my ways, another for figuring out what the right answer is. The question is: What is the prize?

I didn't see it. It's so easy to say anything in the quiet period. The co. can't defend itself. My post #8289 about excellent ER and Q3 guidance by SPIL (Taiwanese assembly, packaging) all but foretold good Q2, Q3 for MRVL.
Analysts usually double-check BackEnd contacts in Taiwan, China to figure out whether a co. like MRVL will do well or not. You can do the same for yourself if you are well-connected. You don't have to believe anybody.
BTW, Xscale orders increase significantly. Again, you can double-check with your source. You don't need to believe me. IMHO, Xscale will be profitable in Q4, which is a qtr ahead of schedule. That's worth a $4 jump by itself as analysts thought it was a money losing biz. Nobody has factored this in.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Broadcom Corp. claimed a major victory in its bitter legal battle with Qualcomm Inc.
Broadcom issued the following statement after a decision Monday (Aug. 6) by the Bush Administration to let stand the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) order barring the importation of Qualcomm's chips and certain cellular phones containing those chips that infringe a Broadcom patent.
"We are gratified by the decision of U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab not to intervene in this case," said David A. Dull, Broadcom's senior vice president and general counsel, in a statement. "This decision strengthens the intellectual property rights of all U.S. companies, not just Broadcom, and sends a clear message to all those who would seek to escape the consequences of their patent infringement.''
Last year, an ITC administrative law judge and later the Commission, in a unanimous ruling, found that Qualcomm's cellular baseband chips infringe five claims of Broadcom's U.S. Patent No. 6,714,983, which relates generally to power conservation in cellular phones.
On June 7, 2007, the six-member Commission issued its Final Determination on a remedy for Qualcomm's infringement, ordering that certain Qualcomm chips that infringe the patent, and future downstream products such as cellular phones that incorporate those chips, be barred from importation into the United States.
The ITC's June 7 order was subject to a 60-day Presidential review period, which involved extensive review by U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, who the President had previously designated to decide whether to let the ITC order stand or to overturn it through a statutory disapproval.

Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales
Mr. Papa joined us in February 2002 as senior vice president, worldwide sales. From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Papa served as vice president of worldwide sales of the communications business group of Marvell Semiconductor, Incorporated. From 1997 to 2000, he served as vice president of worldwide sales for Level One Communications, a subsidiary of Intel Corporation, a semiconductor company. From 1991 to 1997, Mr. Papa served as vice president of North American sales for Siemens Corporation, a diversified global technology company.
I've seen it strikes when you least suspect. Also, when recurring rumors died down, then boom it happened. Especially a large deal takes a long time to materialize to ensure that it has a chance to garner enough votes.
It smells like fresh morning in the mountain after a long torrential downpour. I see the rainbow in the distance.

After full financials, normally the blackout should be lifted; the trading window should be open; ESPP should be reinstituted; insider trading should continue.
Still, no insider trading since 5/23/06 even though execs have single-digit strike price options.

It seems someone is trying to keep the stock down for a mgmt BuyOut.
When Mgmt takes it private, they don't have to worry about dealing with SEC but focus on long term return.
Mgmt might have grown tired of all the option probe mess, Sarbanes-Oxley requirement, 10-Q, K, 8K, 13D,... filings, attending Tech Confabs.
When a co. has so many products hitting the market at the same time while resource constraint, it doesn't want to deal with non-essential issues but growing core biz.
MRVL may copy a chapter from Seagate and have mgmt BuyOut.
Sehat and Pantas are technologist at heart. The Option Probe ordeal might be the last straw that broke the camel back. I wouldn't be suprised if they will do just that.
A mgmt BuyOut offer may be a tad lower than a M&A. I'd say $24/shr Mgmt BuyOut offer vs $27.5/shr takeover (6X rev).
If Mgmt BuyOut is the route, then it's in mgmt interest tho keep the stock low.
$24 is 45% premium over $16.6. It needs to be > 40% premium for mgmt to submit a strong case to BOD and get shareholders' approval (> 50% in Delaware), especially the inst. investors who might be finicky and demand a higher price. The end is near.

This all but shows that MRVL gonna have excellent Q2 & Q3.
SPIL guides 10-15% sequential sales growth in 3Q
http://digitimes.com/bits_chips/a20070803PD208.html
Ingrid Lee, Taipei; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Friday 3 August 2007]
While seeing its quarterly operating margins hit a record high, Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) guided a positive outlook for the third quarter, projecting sales to grow by a further 10-15% industry-wide based on demand uptick, said company chairman Bough Lin during an August 2 investors conference.
With its quarterly sales up by 10.8% on quarter, Lin attributed the stronger-than-expected growth to solid orders from its chief customer MediaTek and the PC segment. He added in saying that the demand from PC and consumer electronics segments both grew by 15% on quarter in the second quarter, while demand for communications related goods also grew by 9% in the same period. Memory, however, was weak seeing a 3% sequential decline in sales.
While highlighting that SPIL had its operating margins reach 25.2%, representing a record-high level over the past decade, Lin guided a rosy outlook for the third quarter. The three major sectors, PC, consumer electronics and communications, should all see an industry-wide rebound with an over 10% sequential growth in demand projected. Among the mentioned sectors, the PC sector expected to lead in growth, he noted.
The projected demand upsurge will grow utilization rates at SPIL, Lin said. Utilization rates for wire bonding should maintain at full as recorded in the second quarter. While utilization rates for flip-chip (FC), logic and mixed-signal ICs, are expected to grow by 10 percentage points on quarter to 95% in the same period, he detailed. Backed by the anticipated demand upbeat and rising utilization rates, SPIL guided a 10-15% top-line upside in the third quarter. Operating margins are expected to enhance further, hitting 27-29%, the company said.
Merrill Lynch cited SPIL management in saying that most of its customers have worked down inventory including the wireless area where SPIL was concerned in the second quarter. The equity firm added in saying that SPIL's comments on the end markets and generally low inventory levels are consistent with those provided by other industry players in the backend industry and foundries. It believed demand is supported by real consumption, a seasonal rebuild by customers, and broadening end-demand.
According to Macquarie Research, the top-ten customers in terms of sales contribution at SPIL in 2006 were AMD-ATI, Broadcom, Intel, LSI Logic, Marvell Technology, MediaTek, Nvidia, Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), SanDisk and Xilinx.
Given that utilization rates for wire bonding are already full, SPIL plans to speed up its new fab construction at Changhua, Taiwan, which started construction in late 2006. The company plans to add another 330 wire bonders in the third quarter 2007 with corresponding sales contribution expected to arrive in the fourth quarter.
Lin also updated that the Changhua fab will initially focus on wire bonding production. As SPIL plans to increase the total number of wire bonders to 1,300 at this fab, he anticipated that this fab will generate a monthly sales contribution of NT$1.2 billion in the future.
Responding to investors' concerns about potential over expansion in wire bonding, Lin said global wire bonding amount will grow by less than 10% on a quarterly basis in the third quarter by citing information from equipment suppliers. Since demand for wire bonding is still substantial, he said the expanded capacity should not pose any oversupply concerns in the near term.
On a separate note, Lin also mentioned at the investors conference that SPIL plans to gradually dispose of its shares at the "virtual SPIL group", which includes ChipMOS Technologies, King Yuan Electronics Company (KYEC) and Sigurd Microelectronics, citing overlapped business coverage.

D-Link expects to ship 1M 802.11n products in 4Q07
http://digitimes.com/systems/a20070803PD211.html
Irene Chen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 3 August 2007]
D-Link expects its shipments of 802.11n Draft 2.0 products to increase to one million units in the fourth quarter of this year, company president JC Liao said at an investor conference. The company shipped 1.5 million 802.11n products in the first half of 2007, according to the company.
The declining ASPs (average selling prices) of 802.11n products will help drive up demand in the fourth quarter, Liao stated, noting that the ASP of 802.11n routers in North America is expected to drop to US$50 by the end of the year, down from the current range of US$69-79.
By the fourth quarter, shipments of 802.11n products will account for 30% of D-Link's total shipments of wireless products, compared to 17% in the first half, Liao was quoted by the Chinese-language Commercial Times as indicating.
D-Link also reported an after-tax profit of NT$771 million (US$23.4 million) for the second quarter, up 92% on year. This brought after-tax profits in the first half of the year to NT$1.93 billion, up 95.5% on year, according to the company.
In addition to 802.11n devices, shipments of Layer 3 switch products will also be a growth driver for the second half, Liao added. [MRVL also provides Layer 3 switch chip.]
In related news, market sources in Taiwan indicated that D-Link may have taken up a certain portion of new shares issued by Wi-Fi chipmaker Ralink Technology via private placement. D-Link declined to confirm the report, stating that it has been maintaining cooperation with a number of chipmakers, including Ralink.

Marvell’s Top Dog wireless local-area network (WLAN) products include the Top Dog chip set. Its 88W8060 RF radio chip has two transmitters and three receivers (2 by 3) that can operate in the 2.4- or 5-GHz bands. The 88W8360 is the baseband chip. The 88W8361 is a combined baseband and RF chip.
The company’s 88W8660 high-performance networking chip contains the 500-MHz Feroceon processor, which runs the ARE v5TE instruction set. It makes a good addition to products that need to interface to fast Ethernet switches. The Marvell chips also support the 20- and 40-MHz bandwidths and can sustain a peak rate of 300 Mbits/s, with the more typical rate ranging from 140 to 180 Mbits/s.
Wi-Fi equipment vendors D-Link and Netgear already have selected the Marvell chip sets for their products.

WSJ:Google shows phone prototype to vendors
Industry watchers have long heard rumors that Google was designing its own mobile phone. Google added fuel to that speculation in July when it announced it was willing to spend $4.6 billion to buy wireless spectrum in a U.S. Federal Communications Commission auction.

Linux to power Google GPhone?
Aug. 03, 2007
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS5441884477.html
[Aha, missing out in iPhone2, TI got EDGE G-Phone, QCOM got 3G G-Phone. This news all but rules out TI, QCOM from iPhone2. The smartphone mkt is large enough for a few top-tier baseband IC suppliers.]
Google's first mobile phone will run a Linux operating system on a Texas Instruments "Edge" chipset, and will likely ship to T-Mobile and Orange customers in the Spring of 2008, according to unconfirmed reports. "GPhone" call minutes and text messages reportedly will be funded by mobile advertising.
News of the so-called "GPhone" or "G-Phone" broke quietly about two weeks ago in the island nation of Singapore, where Jennifer Tan of Reuters subsidiary Anian Research filed a report on July 12.
Tan cited "industry sources," "U.S. sources," and "manufacturing and component supply chain sources" in backing her assertion that after year-long delays finding a manufacturer, Google contracted Taiwan-based smartphone maker High Tech Computer (HTC) to design its phone hardware. HTC is best-known for its Windows Mobile smartphones, however, and Tan offered no conjecture about who might supply the phone's Linux-based operating system.
Additional details reported by Tan include:
The G-Phone will have a large color screen with a predictive Qwerty keypad to simplify Google searching
A follow-up 3G-capable model (Edge is considered "2.75G") will use a Qualcomm chipset
Scheduled for production in Q1 of 2008, the Google phone will hit retail shelves next spring
Call minutes and text messages are to be funded by "mobile advertising"
Google originally hoped to launch a phone this year, but was delayed by "difficulties in nailing down a deal with a handset maker"
T-Mobile will carrier the phone in the U.S., along with (possibly) Orange in other markets
Tan quotes Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Marianne Wolk as having said, "A mobile offering would be consistent with Google's goal to make search accessible. We believe Google would design a solution to facilitate greater use of Google Search and other applications like Google Talk, Gmail, Google Maps, encourage wireless video, and leverage this usage to hasten the market for mobile advertising."
Google itself has declined to comment on rumors it plans to produce a phone, Tan reported.
Tan's coverage also includes an overview of Google's financial outlook, and its prospects for success in the mobile phone marketplace. The article appears to survive for now only in Google's own web cache, here.

The Fed meets on Tues 8/7 and CSCO ER on the same date. Good CSCO earnings and guidance should provide a boost to MRVL, BRCM. Based on good earnings and strong guidance of JNPR, CSCO would have a good one too. There are large NW buildouts in NA, Euro, and AsianPac that needs CSCO, JNPR core routers, switches to handle 3G, 3.5G, IPTV, data/video services.
When a co. retains investment bankers for advise, their research departments have to put their client on the Restricted list, in effect suspending coverage. For a large deal, several investment bankers normally get involved.
Potential suiters can choose to acquire shares on the open mkt especially when the share is so undervalued. When their holding reach 12%, they are required to file a SEC form.
They would make an offer to Mgmt who is obligated to submit to the BOD for consideration. It's BOD's fiduciary duty to deliberate on the offer.
They can reject it outright or ask for a counter offer or demand a higher price if they see good synergy but the offer is not good enough. Sometimes BOD asks for several seats on the BOD of the combined co. or for the CEO position.
Even when an offer is spurned, the suitor can make a hostile takeover bid through proxy vote, ... It took ORCL 2yrs to successfully take over PeopleSoft.
The target co. may opt to pass a poison pill to make the hostile takeover more diffcult. Poison pill can be revoked by proxy fight, however.
In TX, it requires > 75% vote to approve a takeover. In Delaware, it's > 50% vote.
BRCM has class A and B shrs. One class has 10 times the voting power of the others. The founders hold class A stock thereby having stronger voting power. I heard there were some offers for them several yrs ago but the founder rejected them as not high enough.
As you know everything has a price, if the offer benefits shareholders greatly, the BOD eventually considers it if the suitor is persistent enough.
ORCL's initial offer for Peoplesoft was a low ball on. ORCL started at $16, $17.5, 19, 21, 25, then it went through at 26 eventually. So it pays to be patient for mgmt to get the highest bid. The founder said he hated ORCL, but in the interest of shareholders he had to go along after 2 yrs of spurning the offer.
Ellison said the M&A was so accretive, he was almost embarassed each time he had to up the ante.
At least Cramer had the humanity to feel people's pain. IMHO, he was right. Don't let this subprime become a financial crisis as the Asian financial or Home and Loan crisis some yrs ago if you remember.
The Fed should step in right away and nip it in the bud.
"The Fed has no idea what's going on out there." resonates w/ mine
"The analysts have no idea what's going on at MRVL."
The SOXX didn't go irrational exuberant as DOW. Nonetheless, it got hit hard. BRCM hardly got hit at all. Neither did JNPR.
It didn't help that CIBC came out w/ a blow. It chose the perfect time to do it.
Anyhow, Aug gonna be frightening and exciting for MRVL investors. Stay sane in this insane world.
Printer ASIC, Switching, Video HD-DVD/Blue-Ray up converter, HD-DVD/Blue-Ray dual mode decoder, DAVE, power mgmt (MRVL is famous for this, considered one of the bests of breed, oldest biz), baseband (comm proc PXA9xx), wireless router, combo (Blu+Wifi, Blue+AM/FM, PXA9xx+PXA3xx, Xscale+Wifi+HDD/Flash Cache controller DAVE) ICs need to be accounted for.
Now you see the Printer ASIC, Xscale+baseband Acqs, DAVE, flash cache controller, Video are taking hold as parts of diversification strategy to smooth out HDD seasonality. I'd like to see HDD to be 25-30% of biz by 09 so that we don't have to go through this kind of gyration ever again, feasts and famines.
