34.......a very intelligent post. I would vote yes on that. also. However, I do believe they should have travel pay and expenses in addition to cut salaries and benefits.
Excel, you are right.
I think he has become "The man without a country......or a job."
NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES
March 31 — NBC and MSNBC on Monday said they had terminated their relationship with Peter Arnett after the journalist told state-run Iraqi TV that the U.S.-led coalition’s initial war plan had failed and that reports from Baghdad about civilian casualties had helped antiwar protesters undermine the Bush administration’s strategy.
"Getting the Iraqi's respect, at what cost?
I take it he has burned his bridges for his career here.
He might just as well stay there.

Topic: "The Americans"
The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany. It has declined there by 41% since 1971 and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the earth.
As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtse. Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did.
They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Misssissippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help... Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped.
The Marshall Plan .. the Truman Policy .. all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans.
I'd like to see one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes.
Come on... let's hear it! Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar or the Douglas 107? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or women on the moon?
You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times ... and safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everyone to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, most of them ... unless they are breaking Canadian laws .. are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here.
When the Americans get out of this bind ... as they will... who could blame them if they said 'the hell with the rest of the world'. Let someone else buy the Israel bonds, Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won't shake apart in earthquakes.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble.
Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbours have faced it alone and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.
I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians. And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke.
This year's disasters .. with the year less than half-over… has taken it all and nobody...but nobody... has helped.

The True Story of how
"The Americans" came to be and the
magnificent events that followed its
original broadcast
~~~o~~~
On June 5, 1973, Gordon Sinclair sat up in bed in Toronto and turned on his TV set. The United States had just pulled out of the Vietnamese War which had ended in a stalemate - a war fought daily on TV, over the radio and in the press. The aftermath of that war resulted in a world-wide sell-off of American investments, prices tumbled, the United States economy was in trouble. The war had also divided the American people, and at home and abroad it seemed everyone was lambasting the United States.
He turned on his radio, twisted the dial and turned it off. He picked up the morning paper. In print, he saw in headlines what he had found on TV and radio - the Americans were taking a verbal beating from nations around the world. Disgusted with what he saw and heard, he was outraged!
At 10:30, on his arrival at CFRB to prepare his two pre-noon broadcasts, he strode into his office and "dashed-off" two pages in 20 minutes for LET'S BE PERSONAL at 11:45 am, and then turned to writing his 11:50 newscast that was to follow. At 12:01 pm, the script for LET'S BE PERSONAL was dropped on the desk of his secretary who scanned the pages for a suitable heading and then wrote "Americans"" across the top and filed it away. The phones were already ringing.
Gordon Sinclair could not have written a book that could have had a greater impact in the world than his two-page script for THE AMERICANS. A book should have been written on the events that followed. But, no one at CFRB, including Sinclair himself, could have envisioned the reaction of the people of the United States - from presidents - state governors - Congress - the Senate - all media including TV, radio, newspapers, magazines - and from the "ordinary" American on the street. Nor, could have the Canadian government - stunned by the response to what has come to be regarded as one of Canada's greatest public relations feats in the history of our relations with the United States of America.
But, how did Sinclair's tribute to Americans reach them? It had been swept across the United States at the speed of a prairie fire by American radio stations - first, a station in Buffalo called and asked to be fed a tape copy of the broadcast with permission to use - both freely given. Nearby American stations obtained copies from Buffalo or called direct. By the time it reached the Washington, DC area, a station had superimposed Sinc's broadcast over an instrumental version of BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER, and was repeating it at fixed times several times-a-day.
Congressmen and Senators heard it. It was read several times into the Congressional Record. Assuming that it was on a phono (33 1/3 rpm), Americans started a search for a copy. CFRB was contacted. To satisfy the demand, CFRB started to make arrangements with AVCO, an American record company, to manufacture and distribute it as a "single".
As they were finalizing a contract that would see all royalties which would normally be due Gordon Sinclair be paid (at his request) to the American Red Cross. Word was received that an unauthorized record, using Sinclair's script but read by another broadcaster, was already flooding the US market. (Subsequently, on learning that this broadcaster had agreed to turn over his royalties to the Red Cross, no legal action was taken).
Sinclair's recording of his own work (to which Avco had added a stirring rendition of THE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC) did finally reach record stores, and sold hundreds of thousands of copies, but the potential numbers were depressed by the sale of the infringing record. Other record producers and performers (including Tex Ritter) obtained legal permission to make their own versions. In Ritter's case, because of the first-person style of the script, Tex preceded his performance with a proper credit to Sinclair as the author. The American Red Cross received millions of dollars in royalties, and Gordon Sinclair was present at a special ceremony acknowledging his donation.
Advertisers using print media contacted CFRB for permission to publish the text in a non-commercial manner; industrial plants asked for the right to print the script in leaflet form to handout to their employees.
Gordon Sinclair received invitations to attend and be honoured at many functions in the United States which, by number and due to family health problems at the time, he had to decline. However, CFRB newscaster Charles Doering, was flown to Washington to give a public reading of THE AMERICANS to the 28th National Convention of the United States Air Force Association, held September 18, 1974 at the Sheraton Park Hotel. His presentation was performed with the on-stage backing of the U.S. Air Force Concert Band, joined by the 100-voice Singing Sergeants in a special arrangement of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
8 years after the first broadcast of THE AMERICANS, U.S. President Ronald Reagan made his first official visit to Canada. At the welcoming ceremonies on Parliament Hill, the new President praised "the Canadian journalist who wrote that (tribute)" to the United States when it needed a friend. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau had Sinclair flown to Ottawa to be his guest at the reception that evening.
Sinc had a long and pleasant conversation with Mr. Reagan. The President told him that he had a copy of the record of THE AMERICANS at his California ranch home when he was governor of the state, and played it from time to time when things looked gloomy.
On the evening of May 15th, 1984, following a regular day's broadcasting, Gordon Sinclair suffered a heart attack. He died on May 17th. As the word of his illness spread throughout the United States, calls inquiring about his condition had been received from as far away as Texas. The editorial in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune of May 28th was typical of the reaction of the United States news media - A GOOD FRIEND PASSES ON.
U.S. President Ronald Reagan: "I know I speak for all Americans in saying the radio editorial Gordon wrote in 1973 praising the accomplishments of the United States was a wonderful inspiration. It was not only critics abroad who forgot this nation's many great achievements, but even critics here at home. Gordon Sinclair reminded us to take pride in our nation's fundamental values."
Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau: "Gordon Sinclair's death ends one of the longest and most remarkable careers in Canadian Journalism. His wit, irreverence, bluntness and off-beat views have been part of the media landscape for so long that many Canadians had come to believe he would always be there."
Following a private family service, two thousand people from all walks of life filled Nathan Phillips Square in front of Toronto's City Hall for a public service of remembrance organized by Mayor Art Eggleton. Dignitaries joining him on the platform were Ontario Lieutenant-Governor, John Black Aird; the Premier of Ontario, William Davis; and Metro Chairman Paul Godfrey. Tens of thousands more joined them through CFRB's live broadcast of the service which began symbolically at 11:45 - the regular time of Sinc's daily broadcast of LET'S BE PERSONAL.
As Ontario Premier William Davis said of him "The name GORDON SINCLAIR could become the classic definition of a full life."
Excel, Thank You so much.......
I have spoken to so many liberals about that and the other day I ran across it somewhere and was called from the computer and forgot to save it when I came back.
I will print several copies for my liberal nay-sayers.
Greg, Thank You for posting that picture. A picture CAN be worth a thousand words. I am so Proud of our Military and what the are doing.
Greg, would you happen to have the url address for the Canadian that wrote the letter about how Americans are the first to help other countries, but when American could use some help, most of these countries never think of helping America.
Cute, I own.
What could they say?
let's do it!
You may have heard in the news that a couple of Post Offices in Texas have been forced to take down small posters that say "IN GOD WE TRUST".
The law they say being violated is something silly about electioneering posters (is God running for office?). Anyway, I heard proposed on a radio station talk show, that we all write "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the back of all our mail. After all, that is our national motto, and it's on all the money we use to buy those stamps. I think it is a wonderful idea!
We must take back our nation from all the people that think that anything that offends them should be removed.
If you like this idea, please pass it on, and DO IT. Also, since our money has the same 'In God We Trust' on it, maybe the Congress should not be allowed to reach any CASH.
If they rejected the money with "In God We Trust" on it, Perhaps we could say, "Work for free." or "why take the money" maybe we could give them some bags of wheat. lol
A history lesson on the Geneva Convention.
What Is the Geneva Convention?
By Brendan I. Koerner
Posted Monday, March 24, 2003, at 3:39 PM PT
Donald Rumsfeld says the Iraqis violated the Geneva Convention by broadcasting interrogations with captured American soldiers. The document, he points out, explicitly forbids the humiliation of prisoners of war. What exactly is the Geneva Convention?
A stickler for legal accuracy would first point out that it should be "Geneva Conventions," plural. The treaty that Rumsfeld cites is formally known as the third convention, which deals with the treatments of POWs. The first convention covers the handling of sick and wounded soldiers; the second, injured sailors and shipwreck victims; and the fourth, civilians during wartime.
Though the current conventions are not quite 54 years old, Geneva-based efforts for more compassionate warfare date back to the mid-19th century. In 1859, a Swiss businessman named Henri Dunant traveled to northern Italy, hoping to gain an audience with French emperor Napoleon III. According to Caroline Moorehead's 1999 book Dunant's Dream, he stumbled upon the Battle of Solferino, a key conflict in Piedmont's war for Italian independence against Austria. Dunant was taken aback by the suffering of the wounded, often left to die in agony amid vermin-infested muck and decaying bodies; the French army, which was fighting alongside the Piedmontese, had only one doctor per 1,000 soldiers.
Dunant rallied local peasants to carry the wounded to nearby churches and to attend to their injuries as best as possible. (However, given the dearth of medicines or physicians, the care usually amounted to little more than a belt of wine and a prayer.) Appalled by the carnage, and influenced by the Florence Nightingale's legendary nursing work in the Crimea, Dunant wrote A Memory of Solferino in 1862. The pamphlet introduced the notion of an independent organization that would tend to wartime casualties—the International Committee of the Red Cross, which was officially created a year later.
Yet Dunant feared that, without official international recognition, ICRC medics might be harmed as they performed their duties. So, in 1864, he convinced the Swiss government to hold a 16-nation conference, which produced the 10-article Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded in Armies in the Field. The treaty, often regarded as the first example of international humanitarian law, was instantly ratified by 12 of the attendees; the United States held out until 1882.
The initial convention was tweaked slightly in 1906 and then expanded in 1929 to cover the treatment of POWs. The atrocities of World War II, however, led to the wholesale overhaul of the documents in 1949, when the current four conventions were adopted. There were two additional protocols added in 1977 that extend protections to victims of "nontraditional" conflicts: wars of self-determination and civil wars.
Those who violate the stipulations of the Geneva Conventions, such as the stipulation in Article 13 of the third convention that POWs must be protected against "insults and public curiosity," risk being tried as war criminals at the International Criminal Court. The ICRC, hoping to give the conventions some teeth, was a prime proponent of the court's creation.
Even tho' some of them have been taught different, they still do not understand what the Flag and Freedom are about.
Greg, I think one of our neighbors to the north has found where to our strength begins and ends
Alexis de Tocqueville America is great because America is good. If America ever ceases to be good it will cease to be great.
Alexis de Tocqueville Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.
Alexis de Tocqueville All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.
Alexis de Tocqueville ... liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.
Alexis de Tocqueville Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.
Alexis de Tocqueville In the end, the state of the Union comes down to the character of the people. ... I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, and it was not there. I sought for it in the fertile fields, and boundless prairies, and it was not there. I sought it in her rich mines, and vast world commerce, and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.
abe51, I enjoy your posts, this one exceptional. In line with the theme of your post I felt this was a good one.
This is long, but a great read.
The Hollywood group is at it again. Holding anti-war rallies, screaming about the Bush Administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming the President and his Cabinet every chance they get, to anyone and everyone who will listen. They publicly defile them and call them names like "stupid" , "morons", and "idiots". Jessica Lange went so far as to tell a crowd in Spain that she hates President Bush and is embarrassed to be an American.
So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country? Let's look at the biographies of these "stupid", "ignorant" , "moronic" leaders, and then at the celebrities who are castigating them:
President George W. Bush: Received a Bachelors Degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until 1986. He was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998 winning 68.6 percent of the vote. In 1998 Governor Bush won 49 percent of the Hispanic vote, 27 percent of the African-American vote, 27 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of women. He won more Texas counties, 240 of 254, than any modern Republican other than Richard Nixon in 1972 and is the first Republican gubernatorial candidate to win the heavily Hispanic and Democratic border counties of El Paso, Cameron and Hidalgo. (Someone began circulating a false story about his I.Q. being lower than any other President. If you believed it, you might want to go to URBANLEGENDS.COM and see the truth.
Vice President Dick Cheney: Earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966, both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political Science Association congressional fellowship. One of Vice President Cheney's primary duties is to share with individuals, members of Congress and foreign leaders, President Bush's vision to strengthen our economy,
secure our homeland and win the War on Terrorism. In his official role as President of the Senate, Vice President Cheney regularly goes to Capitol Hill to meet with Senators and members of the House of Representatives to work on the Administration's legislative goals. In his travels as Vice
President, he has seen first hand the great demands the war on terrorism is placing on the men and women of our military, and he is proud of the tremendous job they are doing for the United States of America.
Secretary of State Colin Powell: Educated in the New York City public schools, graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY and received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration Degree from George Washington University. Secretary Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and
foreign military awards and decorations. Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and other institutions have been named in his honor and he holds honorary degrees from universities and colleges
across the country. (Note: He retired as Four Star General in the United States Army)
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: Attended Princeton University on Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as a Naval aviator; Congressional Assistant to Rep. Robert Griffin (R-MI), 1957-59; U.S. Representative, Illinois, 1962-69; Assistant to the President, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, Director of the Cost of
Living Council, 1969-74; U.S. Ambassador to NATO, 1973-74; head of Presidential Transition Team, 1974; Assistant to the President, Director of White House Office of Operations, White House Chief of Staff, 1974-77; Secretary of Defense, 1975-77.
Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge: Raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his Law Degree and
was in private practice before becoming Assistant District Attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.
(I really like this one, I didn't know this about her) National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice: Earned her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. (Note: Rice enrolled at the University
of Denver at the age of 15, graduating at 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science (Cum Laude). She earned a Master's Degree at the University of Notre Dame and a Doctorate from the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies. Both of her advanced degrees are also in Political Science.) She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from
Morehouse College in 1991, the University of Alabama in 1994, and the
University of Notre Dame in 1995. At Stanford, she has been a member of
the Center for International Security and Arms Control, a Senior Fellow
of the Institute for International Studies, and a Fellow (by courtesy) of
the Hoover Institution. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe
Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with
Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the
Czechoslovak Army (1984). She also has written numerous articles on
Soviet and East European foreign and defense policy, and has addressed
audiences in settings ranging from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in
Moscow to the Commonwealth Club to the 1992 and 2000 Republican National
Conventions. From 1989 through March 1991, the period of German
reunification and the final days of the Soviet Union, she served in the
Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior Director, of Soviet and
East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a Special
Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1986, while
an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she
served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1997, she served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender -- Integrated Training in the Military. She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. She was a Founding Board member of the Center for a New Generation, an educational support fund for schools in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, California and was Vice President of
the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula. In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition and
KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco. Born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, she resides in Washington, D.C.
So who are these celebrities? What is their education? What is their experience in affairs of State or in National Security? While I will defend to the death their right to express their opinions, I think that if they are going to call into question the intelligence of our leaders, we should also have all the facts on their education's and background:
Barbra Streisand : Completed high school Career: Singing and acting
Cher: Dropped out of school in 9th grade. Career: Singing and acting.
Martin Sheen: Flunked exam to enter University of Dayton. Career: Acting
Jessica Lange: Dropped out college mid-freshman year. Career: Acting
Alec Baldwin: Dropped out of George Washington U. after scandal. Career:
Acting
Julia Roberts: Completed high school. Career: Acting
Sean Penn: Completed High school. Career: Acting
Susan Sarandon: Degree in Drama from Catholic University of America in
Washington, D.C. Career: Acting
Ed Asner; Completed High school. Career: Acting
George Clooney: Dropped out of University of Kentucky. Career: Acting
Michael Moore: Dropped out first year University of Michigan. Career: Movie Director
Sarah Jessica Parker: Completed High School. Career: Acting
Jennifer Anniston: Completed High School. Career: Acting
Mike Farrell: Completed High school. Career: Acting
Janeane Garofelo: Dropped out of College. Career: Stand up comedienne
Larry Hagman: Attended Bard College for one year. Career: Acting
While comparing the education and experience of these two groups, we should also remember that President Bush and his cabinet are briefed daily, even hourly, on the War on Terror and threats to our security. They are privy to information gathered around the world concerning the Middle East, the threats to America, the intentions of terrorists and
terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot
believe that we are in any way as informed as our leaders.
These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country. They only have a deep seated hatred for all things Republican. By nature, and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative views and anything that supports or uplifts the United States of America.
The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum, or when he attacked the Bosnian Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was heard from Hollywood. Yet now, after our nation has been
attacked on its own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed, by
freedom-hating terrorists, while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against the war. Why the change? Because an honest, God-fearing Republican sits in the White House.
Another irony is that in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was in office, the Hollywood group aligned themselves with disarmament groups like SANE, FREEZE and PEACE ACTION, urging our own government to disarm and freeze the manufacturing of any further nuclear weapons, in order to promote world peace.
It is curious that now, even after we have heard all the
evidence that Saddam Hussein has chemical, biological and is very close to obtaining nuclear weapons, their is no cry from this group for HIM to disarm. They believe we should leave him alone in his quest for these weapons of mass destruction, even though it is certain that these deadly weapons will eventually be used against us in our own cities.
So why the hype out of Hollywood? Could these celebrities believe that since they draw such astronomical salaries, they are entitled to also determine the course of our Nation? That they can make viable decisions concerning war and peace?
Did Michael Moore have the backing of the
Nation when he recently thanked France, on our behalf, for being a "good enough friend to tell us we were wrong"? I know for certain he was not speaking for me.
Does Sean Penn fancy himself a Diplomat, in going to Iraq when we are just weeks away from war? Does he believe that his High School Diploma gives him the knowledge (and the right) to go to a country that is controlled by a maniacal dictator, and speak on behalf of the American people? Or is it the fact that he pulls in more money per year than the average American worker will see in a lifetime? Does his bank account give him clout?
The ultimate irony is that many of these celebrities have made a shambles of their own lives, with drug abuse, alcoholism, numerous marriages and divorces, scrapes with the law, publicized temper tantrums, etc. How dare they pretend to know what is best for an entire nation! What is even more
bizarre is how many people in this country will listen and accept their views, simply because they liked them in a certain movie, or have fond memories of an old television sitcom!
It is time for us, as citizens of the United States, to educate ourselves about the world around us. If future generations are going to enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers bequeathed us, if they are ever to know peace in their own country and their world, to live without fear of
terrorism striking in their own cities, we must assure that this nation remains strong. We must make certain that those who would destroy us are made aware of the severe consequences that will befall them.
Yes, it is a wonderful dream to sit down with dictators and terrorists and join hands, singing Cumbaya and talking of world peace. But it is not real. We did not stop Adolph Hitler from taking over the entire continent of Europe by simply talking to him. We sent our best and brightest, with
the strength and determination that this Country is known for, and defeated the Nazi regime. President John F. Kennedy did not stop the Soviet ships from unloading their nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 with mere words. He stopped them with action, and threat of immediate war if the ships did not turn around. We did not end the Cold War with conferences. It ended with the strong belief of President Ronald Reagan... PEACE through STRENGTH.
Who Can Declare War?
Backgrounder and Research Guide
Seeking to oust Iraq's authoritarian leader, Saddam Hussein, United States president George W. Bush petitioned both the U.S. Congress and the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) to authorize a military strike against Iraq. The Bush administration accuses Iraq of stockpiling weapons of mass destruction and has argued that Saddam Hussein's regime poses a grave threat to U.S. security and peace in the region.
After intensive lobbying by the Bush administration, in early October 2002, the U.S. House of Representatives and then the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to give President Bush broad authority to use force against Iraq. Then on November 8, 2002, the Bush administration won a unanimous vote by the UN Security Council requiring Iraq to demonstrate that it is disarming its weapons of mass destruction or face "serious consequences." The UN then sent a team of weapons inspectors to Iraq to verify Iraqi compliance with this resolution, known as UN Resolution 1441.
By early 2003, the Bush administration, together with the governments of the United Kingdom and Spain, insisted that Iraq was not adequately cooperating with the weapons inspectors, and they lobbied for a second UN resolution that would threaten Iraq with war if it did not disarm by a specific date. However, the three allies eventually realized their proposal did not have sufficient backing at the UN, and on March 17, 2003, said they would not seek a vote on the new resolution. After abandoning his appeal to the UN, President Bush declared, "The United States of America has the sovereign authority to use force in assuring its own national security."
Why did the president bother to make these overtures to Congress and the UN? Does the Bush administration technically even need congressional or United Nations approval to take military action against Iraq?
Who, finally, has the authority to wage war?
The president
The president of the United States has no clear constitutional authority to declare war without congressional approval. However, the U.S. Supreme Court has determined that the president, as commander-in-chief of the military, does have the authority to recognize a "state of war" initiated against the United States and may in these circumstances unilaterally send U.S. troops into battle. President Bush has also stated that his powers as commander-in-chief allow him to act independently in defense of the nation.
The president did not seek a formal declaration of war from Congress. But he did seek congressional support, he said, to demonstrate to the United Nations and to the world that military action against Iraq was not just his own objective; it was a view supported by the American electorate as a whole. Strategically, support from the legislators bolstered the president's case as he pressed the UN Security Council for a resolution authorizing military force in Iraq.
Congress
The Constitution of the United States gives Congress alone the authority to formally declare war. But in several past conflicts Congress has relinquished this authority to the president. In fact, Congress has not issued a formal declaration of war since it brought the United States into World War II on December 8, 1941.
U.S. presidents after World War II have assumed most of the authority to send U.S. troops into battle. The Korean War (1950-1953), for example, was regarded by the U.S. government as a police action rather than as a war, and President Harry S. Truman never sought a declaration of war from Congress. And in 1964 Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which effectively ceded to President Lyndon B. Johnson the ability to wage war against Vietnam. Congress passed a similar resolution on January 12, 1991, authorizing President George H. W. Bush to use force against Iraq in the Persian Gulf War.
The current president Bush also never sought a formal declaration of war from Congress. Instead, he requested, and received, the authority to use armed forces "as he determines to be necessary and appropriate" to defend American interests against "the continuing threat posed by Iraq."
The United Nations
The United Nations Security Council is the only organ of the United Nations that can authorize military action to enforce its resolutions or to reestablish peace in a region of conflict. It is composed of 15 member states, of which five are permanent. All five permanent members--the United States, Russia, Great Britain, France, and China--must vote unanimously to approve military force.
The Bush administration forcefully lobbied the Security Council to pass a tough new resolution similar to the one it passed on November 29, 1990, after Iraq invaded Kuwait. That earlier resolution allowed UN member states to "use all necessary means" to force Iraq from Kuwait if Iraq remained in the country after January 15, 1991. When Iraq ignored the resolution, it paved the way for a subsequent U.S. congressional resolution authorizing military force and, ultimately, the Persian Gulf War.
The current Bush administration won a similar demonstration of international support from the Security Council for the possible use of military force against Iraq. UN Resolution 1441, passed by the Security Council on November 8, 2002, required Iraq to reveal all its chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs to UN inspectors. If it failed to do so, the resolution left the United States free to take military action without a subsequent resolution specifically authorizing force. The resolution did, however, require the Security Council to assess any weapons violation that might lead to armed conflict.
Member nations of the Security Council stridently debated the findings of the UN weapons inspection team. The United States and Britain contended that Iraq had fallen far short of the disarmament demands required by Resolution 1441. Other nations--France in particular--suggested that the UN should not rush to war, but should instead give the weapons inspectors more time to complete their mission. Finally losing patience with the pace of weapons inspections, the United States, Britain, and Spain proposed a second resolution threatening military force if Iraq did not disarm by a specific date. However, the three allies failed to win sufficient support among other member nations of the Security Council and withdrew their proposal before it came to a vote. After withdrawing the proposal, President Bush declared, "The United Nations Security Council has not lived up to its responsibilities, so we will rise to ours." He then announced that the United States and its allies were free to strike Iraq without UN approval.
Background
The following articles offer further background on the enduring question of who has the authority to declare war. Note that articles marked with a (*) are available only to those with access to MSN Learning & Research Plus1.
What is war?
War--an overview of armed conflict, from the perspective of international law.
Warfare--a comprehensive discussion of military confrontations, including the types of war, and the history and future of war.
Declaration of War--formal announcements of hostile intentions by nations against each other.
Who declared past wars?
Korean War--military struggle fought on the Korean Peninsula in the early 1950s. The United States never formally declared war against North Korea because it considered the conflict a police action rather than a war in the legal sense.
Vietnam War--armed conflict fought in Vietnam from 1959 to 1975. U.S. involvement in the war intensified dramatically after Congress ceded war-making powers to President Lyndon Johnson with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution*--resolution passed by Congress on August 7, 1964, which gave President Johnson virtually unchecked authority to wage war in Vietnam. The resolution provided the basis for much of the United States military involvement in the Vietnam War.
Persian Gulf War--armed conflict that began in August 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The subsequent fighting in early 1991 between Iraq and an international coalition of forces led by the United States ended the Iraqi occupation, but did not topple its authoritarian leader, Saddam Hussein.
U.S. law & declarations of war
President of the United States--although he is the commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces, the president has no clear constitutional authority to declare war.
Congress of the United States--the sole branch of government with the constitutional authority to formally declare war.
War Powers Resolution*--text of the 1973 congressional resolution that attempted to restrict the president's ability to order military deployments by calling for the president to consult with Congress before sending troops into hostilities, to make periodic reports on the status of hostilities, and to end unauthorized hostilities after 60 days.
International authorities
United Nations--international body established after World War II to promote world peace and cooperation.
United Nations Security Council*--the only branch of the UN that can authorize military action to enforce its resolutions.
And I did not buy at the low yesterday, I bought at the high.
I'm with you 777. I'm staying until the fat lady sings.
You guys are really depressing me, I certainly understand your depressed attitude.
However, I just bought a bunch yesterday, and it did not move the price up a bit.
So, what is the answer?
rekon8, This really is serious, and we better start thinking about this. Thank you for posting this.
I found this rather interesting, I have no ideal if it has been posted before.
Dr David Greaves, MIEE, completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 1989 on the subject of ATM metropolitan area networks. For several years he was a research engineer at Olivetti Research in Cambridge, where he delveloped ATM prototype switches and line interfaces. In 1993, he was network architect for the Cambridge Interactive Television Trial which was the world's first testbed to provide ATM network connectivity all the way to the home. This trial ran for 18 months and served more than 50 homes and schools. He is a University Lecturer in Cambridge. Dr Greaves is also on the TAB, a director of or consulting for AT&T, BT, VirataGlobespan, NVEI, TransEDA, AMG and Tenison Technology. Dr DJ Greaves is a member of the Systems Research Group and undertakes research in the area of hardware design and system specification with emphasis on networking. He has recently been working on tools for the Verilog language using formal methods and the HOL theorem prover and is now applying these techniques to more general hardware and software system specification and codesign using high-level languages. In the Hanlan project, Dr Greaves and his group are investigating the integration of media-access control and VDSL modem design for high-performance networking over home phone wiring within the home. This project integrates ATM and Frame traffic at the physical layer and uses novel synchronisation techniques to avoid preambles which would otherwise dominate and reduce efficiency. In a similar way to mobile multimedia radio projects, issues of the variability of available bandwidth to higher layers may eventually affect application, protocol and QoS vector design. In the Autohan project, Dr Greaves' group is investigating the use of declarative languages based on composite events to control and monitor networks, with a view to providing intuitive and intelligent user interfaces to home networks. Dr Greaves is a practical engineer who has designed many systems and ASICs which are in wide use throughout the world. He has a ten-node home ATM network which is linked to AT&T Cambridge via a 25 Mbps ATM packet radio system.
Mr. 34,
Thanks for the information about Liquid. We are associated with a very big name.
It's kinda like we have arrived.
Sure hope the share price shows it tomorrow.
Ernie, God is so good. He makes it so simple for us. All you have to do is believe in him.
Iamshamm, I am happy for you and your wife.
Because, I have also believe God gave us this news to tell.
Ernie, I will share my story of a dream, since you and your wife helped me understand the dream, and what it meant. I believe God gave me this prophesy
Christmas of 1998, I was praying for God's direction for Ray, nvxe and the 3D. I had invested nearly all of my capital in the company and was worried about our future with the company. That night, I had a dream about Ray, nvxe and 3D, and for God's direction for Ray. The dream was about a cover on the TV screen that would convert it into 3D. However, when I woke up from the dream. The word "mercury" was all I could think about. So,I thought maybe by putting mercury in the screen it could do something to convert the screen into a 3D picture. This shows my knowledge of 3D. LOL
I called Ray the next day, to tell him about the dream. He said he didn't think it had anything to do with the 3D.
The summer of 1999, I told Ernie about my dream and his wife decided to research what mercury might have to do with 3D, and all she came back with was "Mercury was a messenger."
Well, August and September of 1999, was very interesting. We all knew Ray was traveling all over the country, but we did not know, why. In mid September was when Lilly Beter & the B&S Boys came on board with a dream of:
TRANSFERRING "MESSAGES" OVER COPPER WIRE.
This was the answer to my dream. God told me where the company was going before any of us knew, even Ray.
I also think Ray has done an excellent job of of bringing us this far with his limited experience in the broadband technology. I believe the movie was in the making before we even knew what the fall of 1999 would bring. Ray is not a person to let go of his dreams. Ray is a winner!
I also believe God expects us to acknowledge him by telling others of GOD'S Blessings.
porscha, I agree with you.
I am unable to get into the technical part of the technology.
However, it has been my experience with merchants they never give their your best price or product until they know I am a buyer.
How many different versions of Windows has Bill Gates given us in the pass ten years. The industry has to catch up with any change in the market.
Also, if I understand this technology it will be simple to install new chips whenever the market is ready.
My example is Fiber, we have seen the damage to the economy by coming to the market place way before it's time. If you bring your best out first, and you have problems, the industry will ignore your next product.
I Think they are playing this one RIGHT. Don't forget Cooper and his team have been in this position before.
Great article Dilt1, It looks to me like our chips will again change the industry. With the people that have joined the company this year and their experience, I think we could be a big part of the next change in the world economy.
Ernie, it was good to see your Good Morning Post this morning.
I agree Ernie, we all have lives other than nvei, and we have to live our lives the best we can. If that means we have to sell some of our shares, then so be it. Since you are the oldest shareholder of this company, then, "you the boss, my friend."
It's the intentional bashing and daytrading that reduces the share price.
God's Blessings to you and family.
Tigerannie, Thanks for your thoughts on Blue Crush.
I still think Liquid will create some really good revenue for nvei. Most of the reveiws of Blue Crush have been mostly hype, the contents of the story seems to be lacking substance.
I think, the difference in the two movies is Liquid, doesn't have actors or a script, it is about "Real Life and the beauty of the world and the thrill of a sport."
IOwn, you're pretty creative. lol
Thank You, spokeshave, for that description of our technology and how it will works. Even I can sorta' understand what you are talking about.
Trex, that is a good article. It appears they are starting to get the word out about Bruce Brown, in order to help Dana and our movie. Thanks for your post & DD.
Texasaggie, that was the best article I have read on the telecommunication industry. Excellent find.
Thank you, Corba. Even I can understand your explanation of Fabless.
