Wow wow wow tomm!!! eom
tomm, nope
Just using my pinkie. I may be on the vanguard here with a new technique.
Annie
KCMW, oh shoot (now on the "land computer")
You're right I should have done something much more dramatic. Tiger, tiger burning bright.........no, we're on to leopards now. Any good poems about leopards?
I think "What hath Steve Wrought" might be the right phrase.
Annie
P.S. The tiny keyboard does take careful finger placement. I'm using my pinkie. I think my thumbs would bring up at least 3 letters per tap. Oh, and it's super sensitive. I have a really good analogy for men and how to touch their ladies. Oh, good grief, did I really say that? Yes I did!
OK, first post via iPhone
WOW!!!!!!
This is the most fun you can have with an inanimate object. Well a phone anyway.
Annie
Red and green dots.
Don't believe those dots indicating availability. They mean nothing. My way too nice husband drove all the way down to San Jose because San Jose had a green dot. He got there before the store opened. Once inside he was told no iPhones. The sales person was nice enough to call the other store in the area which also had a green dot. None there either.
Then he tried the San Francisco store after getting a recorded message that deliveries were made daily. Of course there were none. A sales person at that store said they would be getting some at some point today but she didn't know when. He called the store a bit ago only to be told that shipments come in after the store closes. Useless!!
Annie
ooops, I guess I misunderstood. Sorry. eom
dslarsen....online store.
Apple announced a few days ago that the online store would open at 6:00 PM in each time zone.
Annie
Hey tomm,
What's the online store look like? It's down here on the left coast.

OT re: AT&T
Years ago AT&T switched me from the long distance carrier I was using to theirs. (I have forgotten what that was called) Anyway, when I called them about it they assured me that the switch was authorized by the person who had that account. While I was the holder of that account the phone was listed in my dog's name, Leonard _______.
That's the "person" they told me had switched the account. You can imagine the sputtering on the other end of the line when I told them that not only was that my dog but he was also no longer with us.
I swore I would never use AT&T but due to mergers and acquisitions I find they are now my carrier for both my land line and cell phone. I really don't have any complaints about the service but I rarely use my cell phone.
Annie
Yoo-hoo Bootz.
Time to check in and let us know you have not been washed away.
Annie
re: Bootz
Does he live in the area that is experiencing heavy flooding?
Annie
SF Store line.
My husband went by the Apple store downtown SF and saw only 4 people camped out. This was around 4:00 this afternoon. Wonder if it was anyone from Craig's list. I sure expected more folks than that by now.
I'm going to check out the Stones Town mall tomorrow. I don't plan on getting in line but I may take my camera and snap a pic of the line if it is anything noteworthy.

Dvorak on Apple mini-stores inside Best Buy.
Another innovation at Apple: the retail strategy
Commentary: There's a lackluster history of success in computer retailing
By John C. Dvorak
Last Update: 3:30 PM ET 6/28/07
BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- Best Buy Co. representatives acknowledge that Apple Inc. will have its own "store within a store" at 300 Best Buys around the country by year's end.
At least one investment analyst, Andrew Horowitz, thinks this is a big benefit to both companies, especially for Best Buy (BBY) since Apple (AAPL) will drive more foot traffic into the stores. Visit Horowitz's blog.
I assumed that these stores would be in areas of the country where locals are not served by an Apple storefront, but I'm told that the locations were determined by market research.
This means that in some instances a Best Buy will compete with an Apple store.
While Apple has been getting a lot of free ink and publicity for its new and innovative touch-screen phone, this retail initiative apparently has gone under the radar. It was mentioned on a recent Best Buy earnings call, but no formal announcement has been made by either company.
Apple gets a lot of credit for nifty product design, but should actually be lauded for its successful foray into retail. Since it has made no missteps so far, I have to presume that this Best Buy arrangement is a good idea.
Apple gets a lot of credit for nifty product design, but should actually be lauded for its successful foray into retail.
The retail business for computers and computer-related products has been a nightmare for many companies that continually did things wrong. I've always believed that if we constantly make analogies between the computer business and the auto business, we must examine the way computers and automobiles are sold.
This would mean that vendors such as Apple, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) , Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and others should have their own showrooms, where they can control and fine-tune the sales pitch. Unfortunately, earlier attempts to do just that failed, and often miserably.
IBM ran a series of retail outlets in the 1980s, promoting their PCs and software offerings. It is still arguable whether the company turned a profit on the stores, but they were phased out within a few years.
Sometime after that, a then-hot Texas direct-marketing computer maker named CompuAdd rolled out a series of retail outlets around 1990. In 1993, the retail operations took down the company, which filed for Chapter 11.
I was familiar with these stores; they were simply too big and too far ahead of their time. Years later, Gateway Inc. (GTW) launched a chain of Gateway Country stores. It opened 188 outlets before it determined that they were money-losers; they all closed by 2004.
I visited these stores too, and they were dreadful -- too big and weird inside, very uncomfortable in general. What someone needed to do was something small, cozy and nonthreatening.
I was looking for something that resembled the early Byte Shops, or even some of the ComputerLands that did well in the late '70s and early '80s.
Perhaps the most successful in their day was the original computer stores called Computer Kits, of around 1975. These were the outlets selling one brand: the MITS Altair, the first popular microcomputer. The stores were company-sponsored.
At first, the Apple stores were more like the Computer Kits than the grandiose megastores done by CompuAdd or the grim Gateway ones. This has changed somewhat, as Apple now has some very large storefronts in expensive urban districts, such as New York and San Francisco.
But the Mac and iPod maker gets good traffic and didn't jump right into the larger stores. The ministores with Best Buy might work, since the space will be image-controlled by Apple. The personnel are to be specially trained to sell Apple gear.
I'd prefer to see mini-Apple stores such as the mini-Sears outlets you can still find in rural locales. At some point, there has to be some sales-pitch control issues when sharing space in Best Buy, no matter how well-trained the sales staff.
Horowitz thinks the top play here is Best Buy, since these stores will court more shoppers as long as Apple is constantly in the news. I agree.
Annie
tomm....and then there's the online store.
They could easily sell that many and more online. Between those who don't live near a store and those who don't want to mingle with the crazies the number could be huge, no?
Annie
lol Tex. eom
Tex, re: trackpads.
I don't have nor have I ever used a laptop. I live in a cave and my sewing machine is powered by 10 gerbils. Oh wait, they must use a trackpad.
Annie
So....what are we ladies to do?
if we have longish fingernails? Mine aren't excessively long but they do extend well beyond the end of my fingers. Cute little flicks of the finger, as seen in that great "info-mercial", are not going to work for me. Yes, I could cut them off but they are tools in my business. Without them I would have to use tweezers or hire a small beaked bird to pull out stitches among other chores for which they are invaluable.
Is anyone on this board planning on buy the first iteration of the greatest thing to hit planet earth since life?
Annie
cc, forget first fatality.
Forget even first accident. What about first mugging?
Annie
Oh good grief, you're right.
I sure hope at least some of those clerks has attended some kind of training thing with Apple. If not we could be looking at the true test of how easy, or not, it is for people to get the hang of Apple's OS with absolutely no help. Should be interesting if nothing else.

Retail/iPhone report.
I stopped in the tiny Apple store at a mall in S.F. this morning to make a few inquiries.
This store is no more than 25" x 125" at the outside, maybe smaller. I asked the saleschild if they had been given any clue as to how many iPhones they would be receiving. Answer: no idea. I asked how they would be handling the actual sales on the 29th, i.e.would they close and reopen, have a separate line, hand out vouchers? Again, no idea. He said it was all very hush hush. The one thing he did know was that they were going to have 40, that's four zero, sales people on the floor. The store barely holds 40 people.
While I have no intention of standing in line and have not decided whether I want to be a guinea pig or not I would love to see how they handle it. The store downtown will be a zoo so I might just pop over to Stonestown and observe.
Annie
re: "tear-down".
Thanks for the explanation and for not slapping me upside the head.
Annie
OK, jeeze I hate this.
I am sometimes too stupid to breathe air but I have no idea what you mean by "tear-down"............sigh.............
I know you will tell me and I will be all embarrassed and go "well duh".
Annie
How about a new contest?
Pick the date and time of the first person reported in line.

6:00PM Everywhere....
This from Journal-World yesterday:
AT&T stores own exclusive iPhone debut
Jun 16, 2007 (Journal-World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Customers clamoring to get their hands on Apple Inc.'s highly anticipated iPhone better make sure they're at the right store.
The combination cell phone, media player and wireless Web device will be sold only at stores owned by Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc., which has an exclusive deal to offer service for the device when it's launched June 29.
The iPhones also will be available at launch on Apple's Web site.
The device goes on sale at 6 p.m. local time in each U.S. market.
AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook said the reduced availability would be limited to the initial launch. Later, iPhones will be sold on AT&T's Web site and through other outlets.
Think the Apple site will be just a tad busy? As it won't be available in Europe does that mean the east coast gets first grabs? Think there'll be any left for us left coasters?
Annie
Thanks dholt ordered the book. EOM
OT. tfigs, oh goody! Another egg user.
I bought the same size. We've only used it 4 times but I can tell I'm going to love it. We didn't like the cart that is made for it so we're making our own from the left over decking material (ipe). Between the egg and the cart this puppy will weigh in around 400 pounds! My job this week is to find castors for the thing.
Probably shouldn't bore everyone here with delicious bar-b-que recipes so send me a private message if you come up with something outstanding.
Annie
shtick, can we even buy them on the 29th?
Yesterday Steve clearly said the iPhone SHIPS on the 29th. That doesn't put it on shelves anywhere until the 30th at the earliest.
It's not looking like we can preorder them either. Bummer.
Annie
Thank you spitsong. EOM
Way OT, press in dried herbs????????
Could you be a little bit more vague? Which herbs?
We have a brand new bar-b (a Big green egg, I know, what's that? Look it up and then buy one.) Anyway, recipes welcomed here.
Bread baking will be commencing in the Big Green Egg soon.
Annie
Sorry if this has already been posted.
Too busy to read everything right now but there on the right hand top bit of the Apple start page is .mac.
Annie
.mac.
Go to the site map at the bottom of the page. On the map is a .mac section with a log in thingy. Just click on it.
I have no idea why it's gone from the more prominent top section. Seems kind-o-weird to me.
Annie
Store is still down.
For the MS Safari beta download? Can't be.
Annie
Store down. iPhone pre-order? eom
lol! tomm eom
roni, so the main question is.......
Why are you on pain killers? What part of your body did you pain and how? Inquiring (and nosy) minds want to know.
Sympathies extended.
Annie
Oh Ms. Smiles!
A forehead sticker? I'm so excited!
Annie
Somewhat OT.....or not....
I'm surprised that T isn't seeing a bigger bounce. I realize the iPhone isn't their only product but they are going to see a biggish boost in subscribers, no?
Annie
coreguy, yeah but,
as the ads began airing on a Sunday they could have sent an email saying something like "keep your eyes peeled for an announcement tonight" . At least they would have delivered on the promise and no one could have traded on it.
I still feel gypped.....mumble, mumble
Annie
Thank you Bootz,
That makes me feel better.
Annie
OK, I'm officially p-ssed.
Did anyone else sign up at Apple for the iPhone updates that were supposed to let you know "before anyone else" what was coming?
"Thanks for signing up. You'll be the first to hear the latest about iPhone— coming this June. That gives you just enough time to think of ways to break the news to your current phone."
I don't think an ad on 60 minutes qualifies as "first to hear". Plllllllllth on that.
