I think it's time they redefine jobs and work..you don't need a 'job' to have "work" and when people stop looking to the "man boss" to keep them in huggies and start figuring out ways to make a living without handouts or expectations that don't work anymore, these numbers will become less and less important...if someone can sell exotic car parts on ebay, how is that any less legitimate an enterprise than sticking a widget into a whatsis on the assembly line at GM?
How do I edit a post outside the fifteen minute window?
or get free media time on cnbc to pump berkshire if I let becky quick ask me a bunch of really stupid questions that I answer like an old Nebraska aw shucks hamburger lover, not the shrewd stealth trader billionaire I really am...lol
"price volatility " - Dan, what are you trading/owning in the silver sector?
The Chinese are always threatening something...
GAPPER APT

In a perfect world...lol

thanks- it's my second win! - woohoo -and I like the company to boot! I owned it awhile back - hung onto a few shares - actually I bought it because when I think of westport I think of martha stewart , and when I think of martha I think of goats on her front lawn which upset all her neighbors..hahaha
Thanks for flagging it again - I already told him it was NOT appreciated - please people - check your links before posting them!
and here I thought it was a whopping short squeeze on AIG
but aren't they making a bit of a comeback now? It seems everyone has suddenly got a trade going in one of em - okay so in your halcyon penny days -what was your most memorable trade?
were they daytrades for the most part or swing? any go belly up before you got out?
I am a bit tempted to try one - they can't be any riskier than AIG or C or FNM or FRE..lol
I remember rigatoni btw- thanks
be careful with a Frederickson company - he is not shareholder friendly..voice of experience here
I know pennies are not allowed as gap tank pics here but do you trade pennies and if so on what board do you post your trades? thanks!
that was a really bad site you sent us to - please be a little more careful in the future...I don't need a virus,etc..thanks!
good advice - the consensus agrees - nothing is planned dramatically either way - up or down on rates it seems..weird with all this talk about the recovery in RE, you'd think there would be more chatter about where rates are headed..so you did not move from california eh? your odysee did no turn up an alternative place?
Newly,
are you in the real estate biz? I think someone mentioned it- anyway - our refi was approved thru wells fargo - once we sign it is sealed and delivered - we are in a quandary as to what the rates are going to do in the next few weeks...not to quote you or feet to the fire, what would you do here, lock in or wait a few days...(september?) it's a 5year IO zero points, no fees, etc..saves us a few hundred a month..didn't want a longer mortgage since we are going to build within this time frame, and sell this house by then...thanks!
did you buy anything yet?

GAPPER - JAZZ
your take on the margin pros and cons is so spot on..I have experienced both ends of it..it was a painful primer on the realities of leverage..I still use it opportunistically, and judiciously while money is still cheap...thanks for all the insights you provided -and yes we are our own clients - (I personally have fired myself during the last two crashes! lol) ...the market makes us all a lot humbler for the experience and most appreciative when we stumble across someone like you who selflessly contributes to our work in progress..thanks so much and god bless..12buttons

Blankfein’s Terrible Win-Win-Win Conundrum

Everybody's been talking lately about Goldman Sachs's image problem. We devoted our cover to to the topic last month, and as the summer progressed, CEO Lloyd Blankfein has reportedly been losing sleep over how to combat the bad publicity — and even went so far as to order his executives not to make any splashy purchases after a blockbuster second quarter, in order to avoid pissing off taxpayers who dramatically bailed the company out less than a year ago. The way CNBC's Charlie Gasparino reports it, when it comes bonus time, Blankfein is "really concerned" that if he doesn't pay his execs, "many will simply jump ship to other firms — including private-equity firms — that will. If he does, he faces endless negative coverage." Gasparino calls this situation "untenable for any CEO." Blankfein now has a veritable Sophie's choice to make from a menu of three compensation-package options.
1. Goldman could switch the ratio of stock and cash bonuses, so that this year executives would be paid with a higher percentage of stocks — which have climbed somewhat steadily since rock bottom last fall, going up over $100 a share. Though they'd still be making somewhere around 45 percent of the bonuses in cash, this would make the onetime payouts, when put all together, seem less gargantuan.
2. Goldman might largely just forgo bonuses and use the cash influx to buy its stock back on the open market. According to Gasparino, "because most of its executives have large pieces of their net worth tied up in shares of Goldman, the wealth effect would be bigger and less sensational than paying all those huge bonus packages at the end of the year."
3. The bank could switch the compensation weight, at least for a while, so that executives would make a much larger set salary and small fluctuating bonus. Again, no big media fuss over bonuses, and suddenly your annual intake isn't based on the economy or your performance anymore. Woo-hoo!
Basically, the idea of all of them is to hide the money behind at least one thin layer of stocks so that it will be just that much harder for cable newsreaders to alarm taxpayers. Blankfein has been losing sleep and reportedly "looks like shit" because of the stress of this concern.
It's funny, what keeps us up at night are things like the fear of losing our job, and that scene where Amy Smart dies in the movie Mirrors. But tricking the taxpayers who bailed us out into believing we weren't receiving multi-million-dollar payouts on their backs — yeah, we can see how that would do it, too.

Barclays bearish on Nattie
Oil & Gas: E&P (Large Cap): Modestly Bearish Injection
Sector Rating: 2-Neutral
Last week's 52 Bcf injection was 5 Bcf lower than the five-year average; however, after adjusting for ~6% hotter
weather we estimate the data point indicates a slightly oversupplied market. Storage data has turn modestly
bearish the past few weeks after several data points in July that had indicated a sharp tightening. We suspect
several variables are causing fluctuations in weekly storage data; however, we expect weekly figures to get
more bullish over the remainder of the summer and fall as there is simply not enough storage capacity to hold
what E&Ps are producing. We expect gas prices to weaken from here and bottom in the fall with a modest
rebound over the winter. We take a cautious stance on gas-levered E&Ps as we expect the market's views on
mid-cycle natural gas prices to shift lower than current valuations imply.

very cute..thanks
let's say you have a500k portfolio - how much cash to equity do you rec and would that allocation change if it were in margin?
How many stocks can you sanely manage in that account if it is monitored and traded in daily?
also what is your opinion on using margin?
I always have and it was quite profitable until the crash..I was dealt a rather painful lesson on leverage on that one..
Cramer tonight on his show told his viewers to never use it!
Margin. It works til one day it doesn't (even if it was a once in a lifetime event. Timing is everything, eh?)
sva do you put it in the same league as nvax or bcrx re swine flu?
