Tyson to cut 480 workers in Council Bluffs

Meatpacking giant Tyson Foods Inc. announced today that it is scaling back operations at its Council Bluffs plant, a move that will end 480 of the 1,300 jobs there. It's the second blow to meatpacking jobs in western Iowa in a week. Smithfield Foods announced Wednesday that it is closing the John Morrell hog processing plant in Sioux City, eliminating 1,450 jobs there. That shutdown will be effective in April. Tyson's Council Bluffs facility processes beef and pork and packs them in cartons ready for retail sales. The company says it is cutting its second shift there in mid-March and moving those operations to plants in Tennessee and Texas that are closer to its customer base. "Our overall case-ready business is operating successfully and we must continue to control costs and improve efficiencies," said Gary Sheneman, senior vice president of case-ready beef and pork for Tyson.
He said the workers who lose their jobs at Council Bluffs will have a chance to go to other Tyson plants. Tyson may restore some of the operations at Council Bluffs should sales of case-ready meat come back in the Midwest, he said. Tyson recently built a new water-treatment facility at the plant and is likely to ramp up production there again once the economy approves, said the mayor of Council Bluffs, Tom Hanafan, who was notified of Tyson's plans on Thursday. "I don't think they would be investing that type of that money if they were going to go away," he said. "I think if the economy rebounds and they get more of a customer base, they'll start the second shift again." The plant is one of Council Bluffs' largest employers, although many of the workers live in Omaha, he said. Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said he had ordered Iowa Workforce Development to quickly assist the workers losing their jobs. He said his "heart goes out to the workers who be affected by Tyson's decision to limit production" at the plant.
Spurt buying. buy wait... buy wait...
Looks like it's bounced 6 or 7 times off of 2days low.
Didn't think it would happen after my post, but it is bouncing off the 10 SMA nicely.
I would not be surprised if we hit the 10 or 20 MA next week or so, I hope we don't but history shows we have a better than average chance. jmo
