I had a question about float and this article answered it. Hope it helps others who are confused about "float", as I was..GLTA
What is a Stock's "Float" And Why is it Important?
What exactly does it mean when people refer to a company's "float", and why might the size of a company's float have a direct impact on how the stock trades?
First off, what exactly is a "float"?
To understand what a float is, we first need to explain what "shares outstanding" mean. "Shares outstanding" are the total number of shares that a publicly traded company has. These include shares owned by insiders and large institutions, plus "restricted" shares and the float.
The float represents the shares of the company that are "freely" tradable. Meaning, the shares other than those held by institutions or other owners totalling more than 5% of the company, restricted shares and insider holdings.
Let's take a look at a real world example. Simtek Corp. (SMTK) currently has 16.51 million shares outstanding. If you multiply the number of shares outstanding by the current share price ($2.81), you are left with a total "market cap" of $46.40 million dollars.
Now, Simtek has 10.31 million shares in its float. This means that after backing out shares held by owners that total more than 5% of all shares, restricted shares and insider holdings, we are left with 10.31 million shares. This is the float.
Now why is the "float" important?
The smaller a float, the more volatile a stock can become. If a stock has one million shares in its float and announces really good news, the share price will soar due to their being hardly any shares in the float. If there are hardly any shares in the float, this means that shares are harder to buy and the price to buy shares will go up.
If a stock has a really big float, this would mean that the stock is prone to less explosive moves. A stock with a float of 100 million shares won't rise 100% in one day, but a stock with a float of 1 million shares could.
Heck with a quarter, Last July /August their was a post on here that predicted $20 by July 2009. I can't get that figure out of my head!! GLTY
StockAce, I've been listening to constantly tell everyone that this is going to .10...well, I can only say "okay, you made a believer out of me", LOL and GLTY
Ya, but where else would I put it right now...I guess I could put it in some safe bigboard stocks or mutual funds that have lost 50% the past year...Right now, EESO seems to be a pretty safe play compared to other investment vehicles. If and when this does spike big, I will get rid of some, but right now I'm not going to mess with success. GLTY
I think it was called EESO,lol!!!!
Short term capital gains taxes versus long term capital gains taxes.
I don't think that chart really pertains to EESO I believe EESO as we know it didn't start until Jan/Feb 2008 when I think it bought up a shell and reversed merged into what it is today (or something like that)..
It's not money in the bank until I sell it though, and
I don't want to sell yet because I'll owe uncle sam 31% instead of 15%.
WOW!!! This is unbelievable! I broke 300K today! I'm just sitting here in disbelief!!! I don't know what to say!! GLTA!
Thanks for the update. GLTY
Thanks ALOT for telling me that! Now I have nothing to live for this weekend, lol! GLTY
Thanks, I forgot about that. GLTY
Volume question..
How is trading volume measured in determining a heavily traded stock? Is it actual number of shares traded per day, or is it a percentage of outstanding shares traded each day. If you compare our trading volume to outstanding shares, it seems were trading around 3.5% to 4.5% of the oustanding shares per day, and that doesn't seem like much of a turnover which means to me that alot of people are holding this tightly... Any thoughts, or should I just go back to my cave..GLTA
OMG! This unfreakingbelievable! The market closed 4 hours ago. Since then, I've logged on to my ameritrade account 4 times just to make sure I'm seeing the account balance that I'm seeing!! GLTA
Hey! let's keep it clean...there might be kids reading this board! lol
I told my wife that I made more today in EESO than she did all last year...She replied "does this mean I can quit my job"?...10 years, and I still haven't learned when to keep my mouth shut..GLTA
At 33% per day it's only 10 trading days until we hit 55 cents!
WOW!!! I love it when I have to leave the computer for four hours and come back to this!! GLTA
The "korean deal" press release was 2 weeks and 2 days ago on 1/23/09, they said the testing would take 2 weeks.
I haven't seen a "lowes deal" announced by the company a year ago, or since. Could you please send me a link to the "lowes deal"? GLTA
Just a thought of what to do with excess revenues... Jarrod could also reward shareholders with a dividend before, during or after he buys back shares.
I agree. I've been daydreaming about a press release in the next couple of weeks saying "oh by the way we forgot to tell our shareholders that we bought back 1 billion shares since late decmeber and were going to retire them"!
Wow! I was also in BIPH at .15. I rode it up to 3 plus and finally bailed at $1.70. There was no reason for that stock to do what it did at the time except for speculation on a cancer tretment. EESO has what appears to be a great product, and they appear to have many contracts and revnues coming into the pipeline. So it would seem that this stock is a no brainer compared to most other pinks as well as many major exchange stocks. GLTY
Risk/Reward, excellent post. I was explaining my luck in this stock to a non stock freind the other day and also used baseball as an analogy. For me though it was like breaking the single season homerun record...and they were all grandslams. I have finally recouped all my losses on this stock plus about 70k from bad penny stock investments over the past 5 years.
All you newbies out their, heed Risks remarks about this stock. It is a one out a thousand find...don't get cocky in the future by thinking their all like EESO. I don't want to see anyone get burned like I did. I started off with beginners luck on Healthsouth and BIPH and got cocky after those ones. I lost all my gains plus my investment. I finally climbed out of the hole with this one, and I don't want to all in it again. JMHO and GLTA
NEWS!! Scientists discover temporal anomaly in the space time continuum...
Scientists have discovered a temporal anomaly in the small city of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The anomaly began building about 3-4 weeks ago and seems to be emanating from a warehouse operated by EESO.
At the moment, it seems to be affecting only shareholders of EESO. The shareholders claim time seems to stop on Friday at 4:30 PM EST, and the weekends take forever to pass.
When a reporter named Dave Green asked about the situation, one EESO employee said “WOW Green, really a temporal anomaly? I haven’t noticed a slowdown of time; my days seem to fly by as I am very busy packaging enzymes for our customers”.
Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation.
Sorry to hear that. I've been there, it's not fun. Good luck in the future.
That's exactly why i'm still holding! There are alot of people that helped me (whether they know it or not) become the person I am. I would like to be able help them and their children if they need it. If this thing could get to .50 in the next couple of years, I could fulfill the dreams I have of doing that. I do plan on selling a small percentage of it in the 5 to 10 cent range to cover my initial cost and help my retirement goals. GLTY
Then I must be mega mega nuts!! I haven't sold any of my 6.86 million which Ihave purchased since last year! GLTA
Congrats! I'm still to greedy to take my original investment off the table...and all probably pay for it...Either way it's an exciting ride!!
Luv, Thank you for that post. I am one of those people. Hopefully, all my shares turn green i a day or two. GLTY
Ya, I saw a post mentioning that! Okay, enough fun, I have to go work out now! GL
My dogs just started howling because of your joyful screaming!!lol. GLTY
Amazing, up another 25%!! Here's something to look at through your enzyme colored glasses.. If you start with $100,000 and increase it 25% everyday, in 11 days you have over $1 million, and at day 21 you have over 10 million!!! I'm just fantasizing again. GLTA
I hope the testing with the Lee's and south korean government officials is going well, because if it does, some kind of contract with south korea would make the 52 million dollar contract with the Lee's look like a 52 dollar contract in comparision! any thoughts??
lol, No pun intended, right!!! That was FUNNY and True!
In the near term,a $1 share price is about as likely as EESO coming out tommorrow and announcing that they have secretly bought back 1 billion shares are going to retire them.... Their both nice fantasies though! GLTA
only 6 hours 25 minutes till the opening bell.
It's not as much fun as sitting at home on workman's comp making 20K a day!! GLTY
I agree. I know I shouldn't say this for the flack I'm going to recieve about fundamentals, but I believe this is a fundamentally sound company. I know they haven't put out any financials yet, but when you look at some of the players (Allie)past perfomance, the press releases that are coming out, the FACT that they do produce a tangible product that works, and the national push to go green, I believe we have a winner....Sometimes you just gotta believe!!
I plan on keeping this at least until 8/6/2010, at which point I'm going into work and when the boss asks if anbody has anything to say today, I'm going to say "I'm retiring today because I can, and I got 5 million dollars!!" GLTA
Successful, I to am in the same boat thinking that maybe I should lock in some profits.... The only problem is that I'll just take all that profit and lose it in some other stock. I'm hoping I can wait till my shares start turning long term in April. GLTY
That's funny!!! We just refinanced our house and got an extra money , and I said that exact thing too my wife (she didn't find the humor in it)! GLTY
