Peek at the Week: Second half kicks off
Division matchups top must-watch list as pressure mounts
By Jim Molony / MLB.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- With the All-Star Game behind us, the race to October has officially passed the halfway pole. Beginning on Thursday, the division races will start to get a little hotter and the pressure a bit more intense as teams try to move closer to a playoff berth.
Will the current division leaders -- Boston, Detroit and Los Angeles in the American League, and New York, Milwaukee and San Diego in the National League -- hold off the second half's challenges? Will the Wild Card-leading Indians (AL) and Dodgers (NL) take that route to the playoffs, catch their respective division leaders or fall out of the picture altogether?
Starting today, we have half a season left to answer these questions.
For now, here's a look ahead at the best of this abbreviated week's schedule:
Blue Jays at Red Sox, Thursday-Sunday: Right off the bat, a series that could set the tone for the second half in the AL East Division race with a potential four-game swing in the standings up for grabs. The Blue Jays, tied with the Yankees for second place, are 10 games behind first-place Boston. This is a chance for Toronto to climb back in the race as well as an opportunity for Boston to bury one of its closest pursuers. Roy Halladay (10-3) faces Boston's Tim Wakefield (9-8) in the opener, Toronto's Shawn Marcum (4-3) opposes Julian Tavarez (5-7) in the second game, Dustin McGowan (5-4) matches up against Daisuke Matsuzaka (10-6) in third matchup and Jesse Litsch (1-3) meets Josh Beckett (12-2) in Sunday's series finale.
Yankees at Devil Rays, Thursday-Sunday: If the Yankees are going to get back in the division or Wild Card picture, the time to start is now. The Rays have lost 10 of their last 12. Andy Pettitte (4-6) will go against James Shields (7-4) on Thursday, followed by a matchup of Houston residents Roger Clemens (2-3) vs. Scott Kazmir (5-6) on Friday, Chien-Ming Wang (9-4) vs. Andy Sonnanstine (1-3) on Saturday and a matchup to be determined on Sunday.
Athletics at Twins, Thursday-Sunday: Two third-place teams seeking to improve their position in the postseason picture collide at the Metrodome. Chad Gaudin (8-3) opposes Scott Baker (3-3) in the opener, followed by an Oakland starter to be decided against Johan Santana (10-6) on Friday. The pairings for the final two games are also undecided.
Tigers at Mariners, Thursday-Sunday: The Tigers are trying to add to their one-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central, while the surging Mariners are trying to trim the Indians' 1 1/2-game lead in the AL Wild Card as well as close the 2 1/2-game deficit to the Angels in the AL West race. The pitching matchup in Thursday's series opener will see two of the most exciting young pitchers in the game in Detroit's Andrew Miller (4-2) against Seattle's Felix Hernandez (5-4). Then, Jeremy Bonderman (9-1) faces Jarrod Washburn (8-6), followed by Kenny Rogers (3-0) vs. Miguel Batista (8-7) in the third game and Justin Verlander (10-3) against Jeff Weaver (2-6) on Sunday.
Astros at Cubs: The Cubs have cut Milwaukee's lead to 4 1/2 games in the NL Central. Time is running out for the Astros to make a move, though they won seven of their last 11 games entering the break, including series wins against Colorado and Philadelphia and a split of a four-game set with the Mets. Houston's Jason Jennings (1-4) squares off against Carlos Zambrano (10-7) on Friday, with All-Star Roy Oswalt (8-5) against Ted Lilly (8-4) on Saturday and Wandy Rodriguez (6-7) against Jason Marquis (6-5) on Sunday.
Royals at Indians: The Royals have played well in recent weeks and will try to continue that trend when they take on the Indians at Jacobs Field. Odalis Perez (4-8) meets Jake Westbrook (1-4) on Friday, followed by Gil Meche (5-6) against C.C. Sabathia (12-3) and Jorge De La Rosa (7-9) against Fausto Carmona (10-4).
Padres at Diamondbacks: What better way to start things off out of the break than a series between two division rivals with playoff hopes? San Diego's Greg Maddux (7-6) faces Doug Davis (5-10) on Friday, followed by All-Star starter Jake Peavy (9-3) against Livan Hernandez (5-5) on Saturday and Chris Young (8-3) vs. Brandon Webb (8-6) on Sunday.
Dodgers at Giants: Another installment of one of baseball's better rivalries. Derek Lowe (8-8) takes on San Francisco's Matt Cain (3-9) on Friday and Chad Billingsley (5-0) of the Dodgers put his unbeaten record on the line against the Giants and right-hander Matt Morris (7-5) on Saturday. The series finale will see Noah Lowry (9-6) of the Giants against a Dodgers pitcher to be determined.
Also, check out:
• White Sox at Orioles, Thursday: Jeremy Guthrie (4-2) is seeking to continue his amazing season with a start against Jon Garland (6-6) and the White Sox. Guthrie, in case you haven't paid much attention to Baltimore lately, appeared in 16 games over the last three seasons with Cleveland, all but one out of the bullpen, with no record and an ERA over 6.00.
This year, the right-hander made a spot start in seven April appearances, but since the Orioles put him in the rotation on May 8, Guthrie is 3-1 with 2.18 ERA. In his last 12 starts, he's allowed two runs or fewer nine times and has gone at least seven innings 10 times. His season ERA (2.74) is the sixth best in baseball, ahead of Santana, John Lackey, John Smoltz, Verlander, Ben Sheets and Beckett, to name a few.
• Reds at Mets, Saturday: Cincinnati ace Aaron Harang (9-2) and the Reds are the obstacle as New York Mets lefty Tom Glavine (7-6) goes after career win No. 298.
Observation of the week: Despite the lopsided margin of Boston in the AL East, 14 of MLB's 30 teams are within 5 1/2 games of the division lead and 11 teams are within seven games of first place in the Wild Card standings. So, many teams in the gray area will make it harder for teams to decide whether they should buy or sell in the next two weeks, especially in a market where there doesn't appear to be a lot of highly desirable talent available.
Milestone of the week: With his next save, Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees will pass John Franco for third place on the all-time saves list behind Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith. Rivera and Franco are tied with 424 career saves.
Factoid of the week: While handicapping the second-half races, here's one set of numbers to consider, the top-five ERA post-All-Star break, minimum 500 innings pitched: Santana, Twins, 2.55; Pedro Martinez, Mets, 2.95; Randy Johnson, Diamondbacks, 3.00; Maddux, Padres, 3.03 and Oswalt, Astros, 3.04.

Yes we have and I'm sure Clint is doing his absolute best. These delays are fine with me, its the rest of the Shareholders that are worrisome only cause I'd rather see the climb finally rather than a dip in loss in confidence. Dips are healthy to a point....Guess we'll just hang tough.
Best of Luck, glad you're out of the pokey, that was BS imo.
