Finding a single ((((brass ring))) can be quite rewarding for a juniorWestern Mining carried out a number of regional studies including structural analysis, as well as both ground and airborne geophysics. In one massive area of intersecting regional structures (faults) they found massive magnetic and gravity anomalies.
Though the area showed no mineralized outcrops of any kind they believed the host rock, some 350 meters under a bed of post mineralization sedimentary cover, would contain valuable and economic mineralization. The entire project was a giant gamble because they were drilling strictly based on little more than indirect information. Drill they did and soon discovered high grade copper and gold as well as economic values for uranium. They named this new deposit Olympic Dam.
Only after sinking an exploratory shaft in the 1980s did they realize the mineralization was hosted in a hydrothermal breccia and was totally different from their African Copper belt model.
The Western Mining team found a giant deposit of 2.6 billion tons of ore grading 1.2% copper (24 pounds per ton) and .5 gram of gold per ton with the added benefit of hosting uranium in economic numbers. The gross metal value in the ground at today's prices is about $145 billion dollars:-
http://www.sea-us.org.au/roxby/roxology.html
That makes Olympic Dam some 10 to 20 times bigger than most world class ore bodies.
A new model, called IOCG for Iron Oxide, Copper and Gold, was formed based on the original Olympic Dam discovery. Basically it involved searching for iron deposits having both a high gravity and high magnetic indications associated with copper and gold values in outcrops. If you want to mine copper and gold in big numbers, look for massive deposits of magnetite or hematite and hope that it has copper and gold associated with it.
Other major IOCG deposits include:

Significantly, the A-type granites were hotter and required more elevated geotherms than the I-types. The Olympic copper–gold province in the eastern Gawler Craton is characterised by the presence of A-type supersuites, indicating that the elevated crustal temperatures of the eastern Gawler Craton at 1590 Ma were a key ingredient for generating IOCG mineralisation.
The lower temperature I-type supersuites show many of the characteristics of granites associated with intrusion-related gold deposits. These granites are more abundant in the central Gawler gold province....

Potential-field data
In areas of little or no outcrop, potential-field data are critical to understanding the geological make-up of the basement. Because the Gawler Craton is particularly deficient in outcrop—with the crystalline basement of the eastern Gawler Craton almost completely covered by younger rocks—potential-field data are vital for gaining necessary regional knowledge of the prospective basement.
Interpretation of potential-field data is normally constrained by the extent of available petrophysical and spatial data, but these data may be difficult to obtain. Fortunately, the unique density and magnetisation of the iron oxide alteration of IOCG mineralisation allows us to map the likely locations of ore deposition using 3D inversion of the potential-field data (figure 1), even where constraints are lacking (see AusGeo News 74).

Mining
Rare earth elements
Investors rush into rare earth element mining
Investors are scrambling to cash in on a new mining boom, one that might end up creating a new industry in Canada.
The rush is on to find deposits of rare earth elements (REEs), critical components of materials used in the defense, electronics and other key industries.
REEs comprise 16 chemical elements uniquely able to retain their physical properties at high temperatures. China is by far the world's dominant producer but has served notice it plans to conserve supplies for its own use.
"There are absolutely no substitutes for the rare metals that are used in (the missile) guidance systems and hybrid batteries that are used in defence applications," Quest Uranium Corporation CEO Peter Cashin told CBC News.
REEs are used for everything from nickel metal hydride batteries in hybrid cars to fibre-optic telecom cables, military hardware, solar panels, wind turbines, compact fluorescent lighting, mobile phones, computers, the manufacturing of super conductors and high energy magnets and petroleum refining.
Demand to soar
Demand in the West for REEs is set to explode, not only because of China's move but also as demand grows for these products. The Industrial Minerals Company of Australia has predicted global demand will grow from about 112,000 tonnes in 2008 to approximately 180,000 tonnes by 2015, a 60 per cent increase.
Currently, China controls between 95 and 97 per cent of world REEs production. But its announcement in September, Jones said, "caused a bit of panic" for customers outside China, who now question where the supply will come from.
That's one reason why Toronto-based Quest Uranium's share price has soared recently to almost $3 from five cents when it first listed on the TSX Venture Exchange in January 2008. Quest is exploring two deposits in northeast Quebec near the border with Labrador. The site is 125 kilometers west of the Voiseys Bay nickel-copper-cobalt deposit currently being mined by Vale.
REEs aren't actually that rare and, in fact, are as common as nickel or tin. The name refers to the fact they aren't often concentrated in deposits that are profitable to develop.
Canada is three decades behind China in developing the rare earth industry, Jones said, because 30 years ago, China saw the potential and dramatically increased production.
"This caused a steep decline in commodity price and effectively killed off any competition," he explained. "So that's why they've had this monopoly. It hasn't been economical for anybody else to explore."
That has created an exploration rush that could become an opportunity for Canadian mining companies.
"Canada's definitely going to benefit," predicted Jones.
"Canada has really been blessed with great geology," he said. Canada has 109 — or 56 per cent — of the potential deposits outside of China. Quebec, with 41 exploration projects, and Ontario, with 28, have the best potential, but there are possible targets in other provinces and territories, too.
"There's a huge amount of investor interest given the opportunity to invest in the early stages when the rewards can be substantial," said Jones.

Ahhhh...VALE....Thanks Issachar2010 ! :o) Sounds good to me!
Thanks Stervc for that information. Great Post.
I agree Katxninja. Mr. Stead has a grand plan!
Sure, From the PR: http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/KAT-Exploration-Inc-Bella-Viaggio-Inc-Handcamp-Drilling-Intersects-Very-Encouraging-1309659.htm
Handcamp does not have the nugget effect.
I added the words in parentheses. As I believe this is how it reads.
"Geochemical analyses and assay data consistently and routinely return anomalous gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper values over considerable widths. As an added bonus the distribution of these (Handcamp's) elements is uniform in comparison to many (other's) gold deposits that are subject to the nugget effect enhancing the potential for the delineation of economic concentrations of polymetallic mineralization.
The Company's exploration work on the Handcamp Project is supervised by J. Wayne Pickett, M.Sc. P.Geo., a member of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador and a Qualified Person as defined in NI 43-101. Mr. Pickett has verified that the results presented above have been accurately summarized from the official assay certificates provided to the Company."
Jaytea, maybe you can make a list of the things that KATX has done, like the Company said it would. I'll bet that would be a great list. :o)
I believe Katx has a grand plan it is continuing to work on. Especially with those new Wall Street Lawyers Katx has.

4) Phase – I drill results interpretation
Interpretations
Soil geochemistry has proved useful for locating mineralization on the Handcamp Property at locations where
overburden is comparatively shallow. A good example is the several gold anomalies that occur along the
Handcamp structure. Several of the Cu and Zn anomalies on the east and west sides of the KAT grid occur as
clusters along grid lines perpendicular to regional geological trends indicating the presence of mineralization but
not excluding the possibility of sample contamination. Preliminary plots reveal strong spatial correlations between
elevated Au and Ag and Zn, Pb and Cu concentrations that correlate with the presence of sulphide mineralization
in outcrop.
The two Induced Polarization Surveys were successful in tracing the mineralization associated with the northeast
and southwest extension of the Main Handcamp Prospect. Broad low resistivity, low chargeability anomalies are
the result of high ground conductivity associated with boggy ground. The classic low resistivity, high chargeability
pant?leg anomalies (double dipole) and asymmetrical anomalies (pole-dipole) are obviously detecting
mineralization related to the Handcamp mineralized zone on this property which has been confirmed by trenching.
The sub?parallel northeast trending “shadow” anomaly 500 m west of the Handcamp structure has also been
explained by the presence of disseminated mineralization in altered mafic volcanic rocks, also confirmed during
trenching. The irregular high resistivity chargeability zones that coincide with the presence of clustered gold and
base metal soil anomalies L’s 5 N, 6 N and 7 N from 5 + 00 W to 10 + 00 W warrant further investigation.
The single dipole survey completed by DFR Consultants to the south from L 5 S to L 10 S was able to confirm and
extend the low resistivity, high chargeability Handcamp structure further south to L 10 S. The two low resistivity
high chargeability anomalies that gradually separate from L 7 S through to L 10 S indicate the structure bifurcates
(splits) or possibly that there is another mineralized structure present at an oblique angle to the first.
Trenching was effective for revealing mineralization along the northeast trending series of high chargeability
anomalies along the Main Handcamp structure. It was less effective elsewhere. As an example finding bedrock and
related mineralization on the west side of the grid where overburden depths are greater than 8 m.
Drilling completed in the vicinity of the Handcamp and to the north of the prospect (DDH?001 to DDH?009) to date
confirmed the presence of alteration and mineralization related to the Main Handcamp Prospect extending it
northeast by 300 m, southwest by 200 m and down dip 100 m beyond limits defined by previous drilling.
Thicknesses of up to 50 m of semi?massive to disseminated sulphide have been defined with comparatively high
concentrations of Au, Ag, Pb, and Zn.
The basic stratigraphy of the Handcamp Prospect includes footwall volcanic rocks, a mineralized zone and a
mixture of basalt, volcanic sediment and less frequently gabbro in the hanging wall. The mineralized zone appears
to contain altered lithologies consistent with both seafloor volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) and or later
epigenetic lode mineralization confirming origins proposed by previous workers. A combination of these two endmember
types is a distinct possibility. However the deformation related to this mineralization is clearly secondary
(kinematic) as opposed to primary (depositional) in nature.
The chert horizon near the top of the mineralized zone occurs as a marker that separates hangingwall and
mineralized zone lithologies. It is also a common constituent in the siliceous cap in VMS deposits. The mineralized
zone appears to consist of a highly deformed and altered sedimentary assemblage related to a transition from
subaqueous to subaerial environments, with chert and argillite being deposited in the former and tuffaceous units
associated with the latter. The structural footwall contains basalt?hosted vein breccia intervals with alteration that
includes quartz, chlorite, epidote and calcite as the possible VMS stockwork remnants. Pb and Zn enrichments are
normally associated with VMS exhalative as opposed to lode?style hydrothermal environments.
Orogenic lode gold deposits are situated along regional structures and the one that hosts Handcamp is certainly
large. GSC airborne data patterns indicate that the structure may be associated with terrain boundaries and
flexures on a regional scale. Deformation within the Main Handcamp Prospect is intense, varying from a strong
regional foliation in surrounding host rocks, abruptly to phyllitic and schistose to mylonitic fabrics near the center
of the mineralized zone. Structural imbrication in which high strain structures surround low strain zones is
common in the mineralized zone, as are pinch and swell structures, asymmetrical augen and the boudinage of
competent in less competent units.
Alteration assemblages vary from quartz-chlorite ± calcite to quartz - sericite schist that contains disseminated
pyrite with increasing proximity to the mineralized zone. A pattern consistent with those associated with shearhosted
lode or mesothermal Au mineralization. The mineralized zone also contains white, recrystallized vein
material, as the potential component of a lode vein system. However the correlation between Au and As and Mo
proposed by Hudson and Swinden (1989) is tentative at best. The high As and Mo values are on the order of 100’s
of ppb and 10’s of ppb respectively, values close to background level and perhaps more reminiscent of the
enrichments associated with VMS as opposed to lode mineralization.
At least two events of deformation have been defined by planar fabrics in Trench 3. Although there may be relicts
of a depositional fabric it is not likely the fabrics observed in mineralized zone are primary. They are more
consistent with syn?kinematic recrystallization. Folding and transposition was observed in fold repeated chert
layers in the west end of the trench as was the subsequent brittle displacement of ductile compositional layering
along local micro?faults. Both may be related to a transition from ductile to brittle strain regimes. Observed
mineralization is recrystallized and has been remobilized as repeated shear bands along S>0?1 shear planes.
Geological features revealed in bedrock during trenching and drilling are largely consistent with the interpretations
of Hudson and Swinden (1989). Mineralization is intensely deformed and mimics regional structural fabrics.
Pervasive alteration is dominated by silicification, sericitization and pyritization along with the peripheral
development of epidote and magnetite. The alteration assemblage has been superimposed on regional greenschist
facies and local spillitic alteration assemblages. Within the mineralized zone rocks are transformed to quartz –
sericite - pyrite assemblages with superimposed quartz?pyrite and magnetite veins. Contacts between the
completely altered rocks and their less altered equivalents are sharp and structural as opposed to depositional.
Lens-shaped fragments (enclaves) of altered rock and chert have been observed locally in mylonite and shear
zones, where they are enveloped by foliation traces.
Sulphide mineralization in the Main Handcamp structure is typically banded and tightly folded as structural
features that are more commonly associated with the intense and variably strain that accompanies the
deformation of a mixed rock assemblage characteristic in a VMS deposit. Dextral (clockwise) shear sense
documented by Hudson and Swinden (1989) as pressure shadow and recrystallized tail asymmetries at a
microscopic level has been confirmed at a larger scale by chert layers that rolled clockwise into augen uncovered
during the exposure of hangingwall lithologies in Trenches 2 and 3.

2) Rusty Ridge drilling update and progress. The access road is being cleared for the drill rig to be moved to the drill targets. Also three dfferent tenders are being reviewed and a decision will be made vey soon for the successful bidder. Drilling will commence shortly therafter.
3) Handcamp Phase-II drilling grid - http://www.4shared.com/document/hknrhDAm/NewGridLines-Handcamp_Phase-II.
Sketch of the new lines to be cut at Handcamp to accommadate phase 2 geophysics and drilling. The line cutting totals 72.5 km, baseline is to be oriented 22 degrees relative to true north and crosslines at 112 degrees (magnetic declination 20.5 degrees W)

The horizon that contains the mineralization has been traced for approximately 8 miles with copper mineralization at a thickness of 300ft in places. Assay results of 2.5% Cu were discovered in the most exposed areas within this horizon. The most recent work uncovered several large areas of semi-massive to well disseminated chalcopyrite approximately 4 miles on strike from the open pit which reveals the highest copper grades to date. ==================================================This type of environment has the potential to produce low grade, large tonnage copper deposits similar to those of the Zambia copper belt. ----------------------------------------------------- GOOGLE ZAMBIA COPPER BELT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I REPORT ...YOU DECIDE---------------------------TRUTH ...FACTS....WITH LINKS....WHO WILL YOU LISTEN TO.......???....THE NAY SAYERS HERE ...WERE NOT SENT BY A (NON PROFIT CHURCH TO ((( SAVE YOU )))............................................................................................ MERRILL LYNCH..." they are all very active consolidators"""" GOOD NEWS TO HEAR !!
Gold will climb to $1,500 an ounce by the end of 2011, Merrill Lynch said last month, maintaining a forecast made shortly after Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. collapsed in September 2008.
“The larger companies like Barrick and Newmont and Goldcorp, Kinross in North America in particular, they are all very active consolidators,” Merrill Lynch’s Fournier said in an interview. “They will continue to be pretty active buying smaller companies and also potentially we’ll see some mergers of some of the senior companies at some point in time.”

Kinross Gold Corp.’s purchase of Red Back Mining Inc. for about $7.1-billion yesterday took the value of gold deals to $32-billion this year, accounting for 38% of all mining acquisitions, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s more than twice last year’s total for the industry.
“The reason why we may have seen a pickup in activity this year is because gold prices are around $1,200” an ounce, said Greg Fournier, Hong Kong-based head of Asia Pacific region metals and mining investment banking at Merrill Lynch. “If you have a view that the gold price is strong and is going to go higher then acquiring more reserves or producing properties today makes sense.”
Gold for immediate delivery rose US$6.60, or 0.6%, to US$1,189.45 an ounce at 4:21 p.m. in London. Bullion advanced to a record US$1,266.50 in June and is set for a 10th straight annual gain, the longest winning streak since at least 1920, attracting investment by fund managers including George Soros and John Paulson.
Takeovers may increase as China, the world’s largest gold producer, backs acquisitions abroad. The nation’s central bank yesterday said it will help its bullion companies expand overseas by extending credit lines and offering loans. The bank also said it will let more banks import and export gold, and wants to spur the development of yuan-denominated derivatives trading.
“China’s domestic production of gold, albeit being the largest in the world, cannot satisfy its demand,” Ellison Chu, managing director of the precious-metals desk at Standard Bank Asia Ltd., said in Hong Kong.
Bank of Montreal’s BMO Capital Markets unit remains the top gold advisor, with nine deals worth US$20-billion, according to the data. That’s followed by HSBC and Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch unit, which wasn’t in the top 20 last year. BMO Capital, which was the senior advisor to Kinross for its Red Back purchase, is the top mining acquisitions advisor this year.
“There’s always a battle of the elephants with gold companies, they like to be the biggest,” Grant Craighead, managing director and co-founder of Sydney-based research company Stock Resource, said after Kinross agreed to buy Red Back yesterday. “It’s a real chest-beating industry.”
Newcrest Mining Ltd. and Resolute Mining Ltd. are among potential takeover targets, according to Midas Fund Inc., which holds Newmont Mining Corp. and Barrick Gold Corp.
“There is likely to be more consolidation in the medium-to long-terms as gold producers struggle to grow organically,” said Evy Hambro, who oversees about US$35-billion in natural-resources funds for BlackRock Inc. “This is a global trend,” said Hambro, whose responsibilities include Blackrock’s Gold & General Fund, which has gained an annualized 24% in the past five years.
Gold discoveries have dropped by 4 million ounces a year for the past three decades, Credit Suisse Group AG’s Michael Slifirski said in November, citing a presentation from Gold Fields Ltd.
“Gold companies have finite assets,” said Richard Phillips, managing director of merger advisor Greenhill Caliburn Pty Ltd. “Producers are under pressure to continue to buy or find gold to replenish the production pipeline and many companies look to do both.”
Greenhill, founded by Robert Greenhill, agreed in March to buy Sydney-based Caliburn Partnership Pty for as much as $181-million. The company is advising Lihir Gold Ltd., which has agreed to an $8.9-billion takeover from Newcrest, in the second-biggest gold acquisition so far this year.
KazakhGold Group Ltd.’s $11-billion bid to take over its parent OAO Polyus Gold to create the largest producer among the former Soviet republics is the biggest deal this year.
China “will place heavy emphasis on supporting large-scale gold producers in their development and overseas expansion plans,” the nation’s central bank said in today’s statement.
Zijin Mining Industry Co., China’s biggest gold producer, this year pulled a planned A$545-million (US$498-million) purchase of Australia’s Indophil Resources NL after failing to win approval from the Chinese government. The transaction would have given the company a stake in the Philippines’ Tampakan project, Southeast Asia’s largest untapped copper and gold deposit.
“Larger size means greater access to capital markets, geographic and metallurgical diversity, with increased options to redeploy capital,” said New York-based Tom Winmill, who helps manage US$120-million at the Midas Fund, which had an 83% gain last year, including dividends. He said there will “definitely” be more consolidation in the gold industry.
Barrick, the world’s biggest producer, and Newmont, the largest U.S. gold company, have both signaled in the past two months that they may consider “opportunistic” acquisitions. Producers may generate more than US$80-billion in free cash flow through to 2015, according to a Merrill Lynch report on July 27.
To be sure, elevated valuations and restricted access to loans may damp appetite for takeovers. Europe’s debt crisis and global market volatility curbed the attractiveness of riskier asset classes in the first half, making it more expensive for companies to finance new deals.
“Potential acquirers and operators have been continually disappointed at how debt markets aren’t functioning,” said Peter Arden, a Melbourne-based senior mining analyst at Ord Minnett Ltd., an affiliate of JPMorgan Chase & Co. “It will constrain” takeovers, he said.

That was NOT gold. It was pyrite commonly called FOOLS' GOLD. IF it was real gold the stocks would be in orbit right now. ROTFLMAO. And I really mean ... TO DA' MOON !!!!!! But they didn't budge, did they ?
Isn't that the same thing as calling it fools gold if pyrite is commonly called fools gold??? LOL
So much "jiggery-pokery" here it's comical.
