Shanda Interactive Beats on Earnings
Tuesday August 15, 5:04 pm ET
Shanda Interactive 2nd-Quarter Profit Drops 40 Percent, but Still Beats Street View
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd., a Chinese online video game company, said Tuesday its second-quarter profit fell 40 percent but still beat Wall Street estimates.
U.S.-traded shares of Shanda shot up 88 cents, or 5.3 percent, to $17.43 in after-hours trading on the INET electronic exchange, after closing up 62 cents at $16.55 on the Nasdaq.
Quarterly earnings dropped to $16.7 million, or 24 cents per American depositary share, but easily topped Wall Street's consensus estimate of 6 cents per share, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.
The Shanghai-based company's revenue decreased 25 percent to $50.7 million (405.7 million yuan), from 539.5 million yuan in the comparable 2005 period, but beat analyst expectations for $43.1 million in revenue.
Revenue from Shanda's massively-multiplayer online role-playing game and casual game divisions declined in the quarter. Sales from the MMOPRG division, which makes up 75 percent of the company's sales, declined 16 percent to $38.1 million over last year. Active paying accounts for the multiplayer online games, which include Mir II and Woool, dropped to 2.2 million from 2.5 million in the first quarter.

Bush is essentially a chickenhawk and a war profiteer. He will inherit millions from his old man, who in turn has made billions from his interest in the Carlyle Group. He doesn't admit to a mistake because it could lead to his impeachment or something even more satisfying.
The Russell and Nasdaq eminis are starting to turn up on the 60 minute chart. Methinks we are headed for a bounce. May not last long but we are due.
Oracle profit up, says taking share from rivals
Thursday June 22
By Michael Kahn
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Oracle Corp. (NasdaqNM:ORCL - News) posted higher quarterly profit on Thursday on stronger-than-expected new software license revenue and said it was taking share from major rivals SAP AG (XETRA:SAPG.DE - News) and IBM
(NYSE:IBM - News).
The world's biggest maker of database software, which issued a profit forecast for the current quarter in line with Wall Street forecasts, also said it would spend an additional $1 billion each quarter in stock buybacks during 2007.
Oracle Chief Financial Officer Safra Catz said worldwide demand for its database software and business applications that help companies automate everything from human resources to accounting to inventory management fueled the results.
The Redwood Shores, California-based company generates most of its revenue from its database products but has made a huge push into the market for business-software applications led by SAP AG of Germany.
"We continue to take market share across all our product lines, growing apps faster than SAP, middleware faster than BEA and database far faster than IBM," Catz said. "All product lines grew very, very substantially."
Steve Bauer, an SAP spokesman, said his company was winning deals from Oracle, howewver, and that the picture would be more clear when SAP reports quarterly earnings on July 20. He added SAP's strong showing in the United States over the past few years reflected a global trend.
"We have had 14 consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth of new license applications revenue and market share gains in the United States," Bauer said. "So one solid quarter does not make a trend for them.
IBM could not immediately be reached for comment.
NEW BUYING CYCLE?
Oracle generates most of its revenue from database sales but has pushed into software applications that run on top of databases as its core business matures. It has spent about $19 billion over the past two years gobbling up rivals to buy market share in a bid to challenge SAP more effectively.
Oracle shares have largely lagged rivals over the past few years as investors questioned the strategy. But the stock, which was up 7 cents to $14.40 in after-hours trade following the results after ending down 20 cents at $14.33 on the Nasdaq, has jumped 14 percent this year, outpacing the 7 percent gain of SAP shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
IBM stock has fallen 6 percent and shares in Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - News) -- the world's largest software maker -- have lost 15 percent.
For the fiscal fourth quarter, Oracle's net income rose to $1.3 billion, or 24 cents per share, from $1.0 billion, or 20 cents per share, a year ago.
Excluding items, the company said it posted a per-share profit of 29 cents. Analysts on average were forecasting a per-share profit of 28 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.
Revenue rose 25 percent to $4.9 billion as sales of business-management software and its flagship database software posted gains.
The company said database-technology license revenue grew 18 percent in the fourth quarter, while application license revenue -- excluding the acquisitions of Siebel Systems Inc. and Retek Inc. -- grew 56 percent.
Last week, the company said in a preliminary report that its fourth-quarter profit would beat its own forecast on stronger new software license revenue than expected.
Kim Caughey, an analyst who helps manage more than $900 million in assets at Fort Pitt Capital Group, said Oracle's strong results could indicate the beginning of a new business-software buying cycle and represent a sign that the company is seeing the benefit of recent acquisitions.
Looking ahead to the current, fiscal first quarter, Oracle forecast earnings per share excluding items of 16 cents a share, up 11 percent to 15 percent from a year ago. This was in line with average Wall Street forecasts.
Catz told an investor conference call the company would spend an additional $1 billion each quarter in stock buybacks. She also pegged total revenue before items as rising 19 to 20 percent with new software license revenue up 18 to 25 percent.

JNPR still behaving well. Green volume outweighing red volume clearly on 30 minute chart. Putting in a .30 trailing stop now on shares held long.
Sold half lot JNPR for a .55 gain. Holding the rest for another day to see what happens. Fairly bullish 60 minute chart.
Update: JNPR Outperform reiterated by Thomas Weisel. That and the CSCO pumping were probably the reasons for the entry of substantial buyers yesterday.
