We'll know next month. I believe it's going to be made public in September. Unless the budget is leaked before then, of course.

Nigeria intensifies fight against sickle cell
Contributed by Musa Simon Reef
Sunday, 10 August 2008
Sickle cell disease is defined as an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. Sickle cell patients have red
blood cells which contain mostly hemoglobin* S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells
become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels. When sickle-shaped
cells block small blood vessels, less blood can reach that part of the body. Tissue that does not receive a normal blood
flow eventually becomes damaged. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease
There are over four million sickle cell patients in Nigeria. Besides the crushing effect on the growing number of children
who are mostly affected by the problem, there have been several attempts to checkmate its spread and evolve effective
curative measures. This syndrome that is mostly associated with the black race has attracted the attention of several
scientists. According to available records, over 70 percent of the four million sickle cell Nigerian patienst is children and it
is estimated that the number will skyrocket in the coming years. Besides enlightment and getting the necessary
collabotrtive efforts, many are of the opinion that for the scourge to be controlled there is need for all hands to be on deck
to checkmate the problem. Scientists describe hemoglobin as the main substance of the red blood cell. It helps red blood
cells carry oxygen from the air in human lungs to all parts of the body. Normal red blood cells contain hemoglobin A.
Hemoglobin S and hemoglobin C are abnormal types of hemoglobin. Normal red blood cells are soft and round and can
squeeze through tiny blood tubes (vessels). Normally, red blood cells live for about 120 days before new ones replace
them. A fewyears ago, the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO) headed by Professor Ayodele Joseph
Coker was in the vanguard of finding a cure for the sickle cell scourge. Speaking to Sunday Trust, Coker said SHESTCO
was evolving technologies capable of bringing smiles to Nigerian sickle cell patients. The introduction of NICOSAN, a
drug manufactured from plants in Nigeria by Xechem, according to Coker, was applauded as it was described as most
effective in combating the scourge of sickle cell diseases. Before now, the only cure was the bone marrow transplant to
replace defective red blood cells. The Managing Director of the Xechem Pharmaceutical Nigeria Limited, Mr Onoyide
Iretioluwa said the drug produced by Xechem, a biopharmaceutical company which engages in the research,
development, and production of generic and proprietary drugs from natural sources. Iretilouwa said that the drug is a nontoxic
phytopharceutical product composed from extracts from four tropical plants an it origin from Nigerians. The Xechem
boss explained that several Nigerians, including Professor Charles Wambebe, a former Director General of the National
Institute of Pharmaceutical research and Development, (NIPRID) Idu-Karmo in Abuja were behind the drug. He called for
national honours for these scientiest who have contributed immensely to the development of science and technology in
Nigeria. Iretioluwa said that the company was poised to enhance the production of the drugs so that victims of sickle cell
diseases could have access to treatment. He said that the company was undergoing expansion with a view to increasing
the capacity of the company and its ability to achieve its targeted objectives. He called on Nigerians to support the
company in a bid to ensure sustenance of efforts towards reducing the pains experienced by sickle cell patients in
Nigeria. We are solicting cooperation from various stakeholders to continue supporting us to achieve our mandate. We
call on Nigerian farmers not to relent on their oars to assist Xechem with the raw materials needed to produce the
drug.” Iretioluwa called on other state governors to borrow a leaf from the gesture of Governor Mu’azu
Babangida Aliyu who recently purchased a large quantities of drug and distributed free to sickle cell children. Alhaji
Abdulakadir Waziri, an executive officer of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), noted that the introduction of
the drugs into the Nigerian market had assisted in tackling the problem of sickle cell anaemia in Nigeria. He said that the
scourge, being a poor man’s burden, has gone a long way in the development of people living in rural areas.

lmf, anything new anything new on the Dr. Pandey front?
What makes me angry is that the Packers did tell Brett he could compete for the job. Favre basically responded by saying he couldn't get over some things that were said.
So, he would have been the starter this year, if he wasn't so thin skinned.
Favre era ends in Green Bay with trade to Jets

The Brett Favre era in Green Bay apparently came to an end late Wednesday as the longtime Packers star quarterback was traded to the New York Jets, Foxsports.com first reported.
The compensation, believed to be a single draft pick that rises in value depending upon how the Jets perform during the 2008 season, was confirmed by ESPN's Michael Smith on Wednesday night.
The Jets declined to comment on the report.
Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, confirmed in an e-mail to The Associated Press earlier Wednesday that the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were emerging as the most likely trade destinations for the three-time MVP.
Packers general manager Ted Thompson skipped practice Wednesday morning, and his scheduled early afternoon media availability was postponed indefinitely -- signs that a deal could be in the works. Thompson also was not seen at Wednesday night's practice, although team president and CEO Mark Murphy made an appearance.
Favre was on a private plane that left for Hattiesburg, Miss. at 1:25 p.m. EDT Cook and Favre's wife, Deanna, also were aboard the plane that landed two hours later. Favre's family home is near Hattiesburg.
In Mississippi, Favre confirmed that he was considering the Jets and Buccaneers.
"We're working on it," Favre said in video posted on Jackson TV station WJTV's Web site. "Hopefully we can get something resolved. I've been saying that for quite a while now. I don't want to say we're running out of time, but I need to get into a camp somewhere."
Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden refused to address speculation that the team was on the verge of a deal for Favre, sidestepping a question about whether he had spoken to Favre Tuesday night.
"I'm not going to talk about it," Gruden said. "I don't know anything other than what happened today on the practice field, and I don't want to address any more speculation at this point. Brett's situation will resolve itself during the coming days I would assume. But at this point and time, all I can comment on is our football team and what we did today."
Gruden acknowledged that he's always willing to explore ways to improve his team.
"We are a good football team," Gruden said. "We're trying to become a great one. We'll do anything we can to get better. And if that involves looking at other players, by George that's our job. That's our responsibility."
Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to Favre again Tuesday night, but there was no indication that their conversation did anything to change the fractured relationship between Favre and the franchise.
"It was just very general," McCarthy said of the conversation with Favre, who was excused from practice Wednesday. "Just how he was doing, where he was with the process, things like that."
McCarthy said he was happy the rest of his players were getting a chance to move forward.
"We talked about it last night," McCarthy said. "The players want resolution, they want what everybody wants. To come out here every day and talk about somebody that is not here and then shows up, it's gone on too long, and understandably so. They want to play football."
Packers players vented frustration over the Favre situation Tuesday, after fans chanting "Bring Back Brett!" turned practice into a zoo-like atmosphere and reporters continued asking questions about Favre instead of football.
After McCarthy made it clear Tuesday that Favre's football future wouldn't be in Green Bay, players seemed to have some sense of closure.
"It was just important to get things moving," Packers tackle Mark Tauscher said. "Obviously, there's no closure as of yet, but I think we've kind of been told what's going on and I think we all kind of know where everything stands."
Packers cornerback Charles Woodson -- who said Tuesday that the saga had "gone on long enough" -- said Wednesday that the Packers' front office gave players the answers they needed.
"From what I understand, for the most part it's taken care of," Woodson said. "Now it's just about the Packers and not about the situation. It's over now. From what I understand, it's pretty much over."
And if the Packers end up playing against Favre in Tampa on Sept. 28?
"Once you're on another team, you're on another team," Woodson said. "I think for the most part the locker room would have liked to see him back here. But like I say, once you're on another team ..."
The final split between the Packers and Favre became obvious Tuesday night. McCarthy told reporters that after extensive conversations with Favre over two days, he had determined that Favre doesn't have the right mind-set to play for the Packers.
After approximately six hours of what McCarthy called "brutally honest" conversations with Favre, McCarthy said Favre couldn't seem to get past emotional wounds that were opened as tensions mounted in recent weeks -- even with the chance to win his starting job back potentially on the table.
"The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want," McCarthy said Tuesday. "He needs to jump on the train and let's go. Or, if we can't get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving."
Favre left Lambeau Field just before Packers practice Tuesday afternoon.
"We're at a stalemate," Favre told ESPN Tuesday morning.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Brett Favre on Sunday, the three-time MVP said.
The Packers couldn't confirm the reinstatement, and said because it wasn't an offical business day for the league it wasn't possible Sunday.
Nevertheless, Favre was prepared to fly to Green Bay in time to attend the sold-out Packers Family Night at Lambeau Field, which more than 60,000 fans were expected to attend.
On Saturday, Goodell said he hoped the situation would be resolved by Monday, by which team and league sources told ESPN's Wendi Nix that he was expected to act on the reinstatement.
Goodell visited the Cincinnati Bengals' training camp on Saturday before heading north to Canton, Ohio, for the weekend's Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
"I'm not trying to interject myself," Goodell said in Georgetown, Ky., according to The Associated Press. "I was interjected into it because there was a tampering charge initially. I'm not looking for things to interject myself to. It's an issue that needs to be addressed because of the competing interests. You want to make sure it's done properly and within our rules. This is an issue that ultimately has to be decided between Brett and the Packers."
The Packers hold Favre's rights until his current contract expires after the 2010 season.

Tensions have built between Favre and the team over the past several weeks.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy again praised his players for not allowing the Favre situation to distract them.
"What's going on between Brett and the organization is something that the players and coaches, we cannot handle," McCarthy said Saturday. "We're not involved in it. I think they did a good job from a responsibility standpoint dealing with it for about two days, but the focus has been on improving."
Earlier this week, Favre sent a letter to Goodell requesting to be reinstated from the team's reserve/retired list. But Goodell has held off approving the request, hoping the two sides could resolve their differences.
"Primarily, it starts with the fact, does Brett want to play football?" Goodell said. "The second is, do the Packers want him to play for the Packers. Those are the two principal points that have to be resolved. And only two parties can make that determination, not me."
Goodell said both parties are being "reasonable."
"They're difficult, emotional issues," Goodell said. "They're important to the future of both of them."

No, but my e-mails have never been very pleasant.
Here's his e-mail, in case you don't have it:

Probably not necessary. I'm pretty sure the guy reads the board.
Exactly. So, what can be done to stop them?
That would be nice, but without FDA approval, I doubt anybody at that level in this U.S would support Nicosan.
I would support that.
Brought before the FDA for approval?
I think he may mean 5HMF. His info. is wrong, but it may be what he's talking about.
Quite a few of us have been in this for 2 + yrs. Now that's having cajones. My average is at .02 cents. So, you see I've been through the bad times with this stock. Consider yourself lucky to have gotten in at such a low price.
Also, for some of you to come to this board telling us to sell, stop wasting your time. I've lost so much already. What's another couple grand.
No,it's been posted before.
This boards reaction to the conference call, tells me everybody expects bad news next Thurs. Or is everybody just taking a break from Ihub?
Thanks for the reply lmf. I appreciate what you're doing. Thanks
lmf are you still out there? Just wondering if there's anything new on Pandey's side of things.
Drifter, can you post Basu's e-mail, or has he asked you not to?
I'v come to the realization that "phase 3" is mentioned everywhere with Nicosan. I guess it doesn't mean anything.
I'm just longing to read updated info. that would make me feel better about my investment. Not meaning to clutter the board.
Phase 3 clinical trials mentioned again.

Probably been posted, but I hadn't seen it.
NIPRD partners with herbalists for drug production
• Tuesday, Apr 29, 2008
The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) is partnering with herbalists in the manufacturing of drugs.
Dr. Yetunde Isii, a Research Fellow in the Institute announced the plan in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja.
Isimi said the institute had already received some prescriptions from the herbalist which were undergoing research to justify their claims.
“WHO is sponsoring the on-going third phase trials of the research?
“We have also started a research on HIV booster and malaria drugs,” Isimi said.
She said that the “NICOSAN” sickle-cell drugs made by the institute was being produced in commercial quantity.

Could WHO be paying for phase 3 trials of Nicosan?
A yr. or 2 ago, some posters bombarded Oprah's site with info about Nicosan and the company. Don't think anybody ever got a response from her or her people.
Without FDA approval, I'm affraid he wouldn't give Nicosan a second of his time.
I hate to admit it legion, but I agree with you. Also, you did call this correctly. Swift was a big mistake.
I believe many on this board now believe Pandey is a possible way to fix this. Just hope they make the change before it's too late. Not even sure if this is a possibility, but not many other options, IMO.
Imf, do you think there's any hope for the company. Thanks
Imf, you seem to know what's going on with the company. You stated in one of your posts:
I've spent the last two months researching the things that have been said that happened, money stolen, equipment diverted, things spent unnecessarily, etc. and I can tell you with a lot of confidence, things aren't always what people say they are, including this latest press release.
What did you mean by this?
Has anybody spoken with the company today? Just wondering if this PR means they are no longer gagged.
No mention of the facilities being built.
That's if Swift is actually running the show. IMO, he's nothing more than a puppet.
If they were raking in that kind of money, it would have been leaked by now. No way we'd be sitting at .0014 if this were the case.
Can somebody tell me if the trial date has been extended again?
If so, whats the new date? Thanks
