Do you think that our perpetual exposure to media desensitizes us to tragedy to some extent? How has human consciousness and perception changed as a consequence of exposure to perpetual media (entertainment). I wonder to what extent experience is percieved almost as an out of body experience, as if one is watching oneself, or as if one is in a movie. I have noticed a change in the self-awareness of children. Is it due to differences in parenting and the hyper vigilence of certain parents, or to TV and a barrage of information that would make them chronically aware of how they are percieved and how to behave for a desired effect. Children seem very aware that they are cute, very different behavior from clips I've recently seen of children from prior decades.
Thanks. I'm going to think about this one. It's an interesting topic.
I like Warsteiner, too. Will try Paulener. Thanks.
I only recently heard the term 'skunky' and finally totally understood what it means the other day when I opened a botlle of beer (to dump it) that had been rolling around for awhile and it actually smelled just like skunk. I thought, "I GET IT!"
In what way? That some kids laughed so they all did, or that all of them were afraid to look as though they cared? That they were all trying to act cool? You really think they weren't perceiving it as funny or goofy in actuality?
It's mind boggling. I suppose the kind of entertainment kids grow up on completely distorts their sense of reality . Makes you wonder, really wonder - doesn't it? I think it's good fodder for a discussion here. How far reaching is this distortion of reality? Is it limited to what they perceive as entertainment or does it permeate their perception of the world. It's a debate that's been going on for a long time. Hard to know which side of the debate has been more accurate.
What a story. I'll put it in the queue today. I would have been beside myself the whole time.
I do think the last scene was a reference to the title. Forgot to note if she was wearing something different. Was watching on TV, too, so couldn't rewind. Was disappointed in her for lying about the bus driver. I'd originally seen it so long ago I practically saw much of it anew.
Watched Junebug tonight. I LOVED it. I would not recommend Junebug to just anyone but for me it gets 3.75/5. I almost want to give it more for being confident enough to leave just enough details unresolved. Not so the movie ends up being frustrating, but more realistic. Not all behavior is understandable or justifiable and in fact, behavior just is.
It never ceases to amaze me how two people from completely different backgrounds can live together. Not that they can fall in love or be attracted to one another, but how do they ultimately stay together?! And how did George become George, anyway? So much I'd love to say but I'd better stop there.
The movie does a fine job of walking that line between not saying too much nor too little. In the end I knew just what I needed to know and so did Madeleine and George. Fine job by Morrison.
The main reason I am not giving this movie a 4 is the Ashley character. She was just a bit too over the top for my taste but that and the fact that it simply is not a 5 star movie for some reason are my only complaints. Embeth Davidtz smiled too much, perhaps, but is stunning and I LOVED her character. Well, and the scene with Ashley doing situps - it's so obviously not her body. But the freakishness of it almost worked somehow. Regardless of minor complaints, I adored this movie. I am tempted to say why, in fine detail, but hate putting spoilers in reviews so will bite my fingers.
night :)
Epsilons can be so abstract, can't they? Well, since I won't be watching the SB, I wouldn't mind having a beer with a few ibuds (as in buddies).
I used to like dark beer tremendously but somehow don't as much. I have never liked Guinness, except for a real cold xxx out of the bottle. Best use of canned is to make chicken (my friend Low showed me this recipe) -http://www.barbecuebible.com/featured/recipe/basic_beercan_c.php - cause it's undrinkable. I HATE CANNED BEER AND GUINNESS IS THE WORST!
I truly love a good beer, though. Am in search of a new favorite. Tired of all old faves.
I LOVE a good rant! I will avoid 'Around the Bend' at all costs. Thanks for warning.
Saw Sweet Hereafter on TV tonight. Really love that movie. Forgot so much of it.
Well, fading fast here. Oh my, closed my eyes and almost didn't make it back to sign of and send.
Night!
Hi Derf. We have been putting them in the ibox. It's toward the bottom. Raz, PDC, Lugan and I will have a powow regarding subsequent tasting times. Sunday seems to be a problem for a number of people. Mucho thanks for input.
I'll be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice. Thanks and see you soon. Melting into the couch here.
Night.
Yuck! You ever have blood pudding?
I'm starting to fade now. I'm pretty sick. Lying around all day is enervating. About ready to collapse suddenly. See you tomorrow.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I'm with you on this one. It was a very good movie.
I have the weirdest stomach virus. I can't stand up without my belly hurting. Slept on the couch all day and am pretty awake now.
Watched about half of Chunking Express. For its time I think it was a pretty cool movie - 1994. I missed the first half so I hesitate to write too much about it right now. Women are portrayed so oddly in so many movies. I thought this girl read as mentally deficient. But again, I may have missed something. Tell me this, if you found out some crazy female was breaking into your apartment daily, would you then ask her out? At that point they lost me. I have so little tolerance for the portrayal of woman as pixies who smell sheets and are desirable for being obsessive compulsive.
Go to other boards, too. Maybe send PMs to people who've posted here? Up to you.
Looking forwad to it, Lugan. If you don't show up this time you will get a very big raspberry demerit!
Who said anything about immolation? Because I told you not to see The Wicker Man? Oh come oooooon.
Maybe a lighthearted affair with naked virgins dancing around the moderator. Does that work for you?
I still can't believe how stupid he is. Every time I hear him speak my blood boils.
I'm making up my own zodiac. This is 'Last Year of the Dog'. Next year is 'Year of no more animals'.
Surely there's something you've never done.
Love him, btw.
Lugan, pick a date that will work for you. I have no preference or agenda. Sunday nights are always open for me so I will be here. Plus, I love Sauvignon Blanc! Can't wait to see what you pick.
I think we could come up with a thread death ritual that would do the trick. I love when things come full circle.
Night, Ergo.... I'll be dreaming up sacrifices involving moderators and such til we meet again.
P.S. Raz... it'll be a fun sacrifice. But don't watch The Wicker Man, okay?
This is doable but let's sleep on it.
Honestly, there has to be something, SOMETHING we can do with this board.
I was going to surprise you with eight pics in the ibox but it's proving to be too difficult.
POLITICS! Brilliant!
You're acting too much like a protagonist now but you're right. Since you're doing so well, what shall be our new image.
I have always admired your unique brand of directness. You're in, but where do we go from here?
We have to use the Rooster theme... cocky something or other.
Shall we have a logo contest? We need an antagonist.
I think that could work for awhile but we could get some pretty interesting results asking people what gets them up in the morning ;)
Tell me about it. Me too. I have few things I have to watch and I wasn't in the mood today. What should we do with this board. A new excuse to exist.
Looks like something you'd put your dog up to. Hey, what's up?
Is that your dog?!!!!!!!!!!
I've actually been thinking of what kind of ceremony it would be. Maybe the design should be a group effort. I can think of a few things I'd like for it to include, for sure.
After all, this is the internet. Raz, I'm heading out.
Night. Enjoy the rest of the evening.
I forgot you know what I weigh.
Thanks for concern, Raz. I'll live no matter, I hope at any rate.
I have been working hard for more tolerance. I'm up to a glass from half.
From the nose I would agree with you. My belly is churning here. Can't drink anymore today. Jeesh, I sound like a lush for sure :(
Okay, was worried.
