London. More drilling success has been reported by the partners in the UK Cygnus gas field where a sixth appraisal well has confirmed the discovery as one of the biggest in recent years while an extension to the field licence area has also been granted. Partner Endeavour Energy, which has 12.5% in Cygnus said the latest well will help optimise a field development concept.

Endeavour's statement came after the 44/12a-5 appraisal well achieved a stable flow rate of 29 Mmcf/d of gas from a a 94 ft (28.65 metre) perforation in the Leman reservoir.

Also the company said the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change has agreed to grant to the partners a new licence interest P1731, encompassing blocks 44/11b and 44/12b, which contain additional fault blocks forming a northerly extension of Cygnus which are yet to be appraised by further drilling.

"Analysis of the results from Cygnus well data combined with seismic data has led to a reserve estimate in the five appraised fault blocks ranging from a low case of 500 billion cubic feet to an upside of 1.2 trillion cubic feet," Endeavour declared. "The additional fault blocks falling mainly in the new license could add material volumes once drilled."

William Transier, Endeavour's chairman, chief executive and president said: "With the successful completion of this well in the Cygnus gas field, we are now pursuing an optimised field development concept that will be designed to accommodate the potentially significant flow rates from this world-class gas field."

Endeavour owns 12.5%interest in blocks 44/11a and 12a and 17.24% in 44/11b and 44/12b encompassing Cygnus. GDF Suez E&P operates Cygnus, and the remaining partner is Centrica.
