Small Business Broadband Rises on the Radar Screen
With the residential market in full swing, incumbent telcos are turning to small businesses for broadband growth. Cable’s not there yet, but a crew of tech start-ups focused on bandwidth enhancement could change that. [Article ID: 3913]

Do they hand out rating cards at these showings on how each audience member liked the movie?
I remember there was a free sneak preview in LSC at MIT of "Dark City" science fiction move, the movie sucked and they filled out the cards, it was released in the theaters but only lasted a week.
They did the same for the teen movie "American Pie" they Loved it! It was released and it was a smash hit!
So I wonder if they do the same at No dance, Sundance and the others?

Broadband connection may be delivered through power lines
January 15, 2003 Posted: 04:45:00 PM PST
By DAVID HO, Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) - The same power lines that bring electricity to televisions and toasters may become the next pathway into homes for high-speed Internet access, federal officials said Wednesday.
They said the technology offers an alternative to cable and telephone lines as a way to get broadband service, with its ability to quickly deliver large amounts of data and high-quality video signals.
"Every power plug in your home becomes a broadband connection," said Edmond Thomas, chief of the Federal Communications Commission's Office of Engineering and Technology. He said companies developing the technology have overcome many hurdles in the past year.
"It's starting to look like a very viable technology," said Thomas, who described the technology in a presentation to the agency's five commissioners. "We're very excited."
But it is uncertain whether most consumers will get to use it anytime soon, said Mark Uncapher, senior vice president with the Information Technology Association of America, a Washington-based trade group.
"It is still very much an open question just how commercially feasible it is," he said. "It's going to need a company or companies that are really going to champion it."
Internet access over electric lines would be similar in capability to connections over cable modems and telephone DSL, Thomas said.
Such an alternative could lead to more competition and lower prices, Uncapher said.
The FCC has been studying the technology for several months and will pay more attention to it this year, Thomas said. He said no regulations prohibit the technology, but the agency is concerned that Internet transmissions carried over power lines could emit signals inside and outside the home that could cause interference.
"We want to make darn sure this isn't going to cause problems to your TV," he said.
Utility companies PPL Corp. in Allentown, Pa., and Ameren Corp. in St. Louis are conducting trial programs with consumers to test the technology, representatives of the companies said.
"It is working," said Alan Shark, president of the Power Line Communications Association, which is promoting the technology. The trade group includes Internet companies including Earthlink and 11 utility companies that provide power to about 30 million homes.
Earthlink, the No. 3 Internet service provider, has been in talks with utility companies, exploring partnerships to develop and market the technology, said Dave Baker, the company's vice president for law and public policy.
"The engineering challenges are largely being overcome," Baker said. "The biggest challenges now are getting the product to market."
Shark said the technology works by sending information over existing electric power lines. Cables carrying high-speed Internet information would likely be linked to electric lines after they have left power stations. Internet connections could then flow directly into the power outlets in homes and offices or to an outdoor pole that broadcasts a wireless broadband signal to a neighborhood.
The current technology can not send signals over high-voltage lines that carry greater amounts of electricity to isolated areas, Shark said.
Shark said the technology has other potential benefits, including helping utilities monitor the condition of power lines and providing a back up communications system for communities worried about terrorism, natural disasters or other emergencies.

REDMOND, Wash. (Jan. 16) - Microsoft Corp. announced its first-ever dividend to shareholders Thursday and said it will issue a two-for-one stock split.
Heeding some investors' calls to share in the Redmond software giant's $40.5 billion in cash, the company said it will pay an annual dividend of 16 cents per share on a pre-split basis.
The announcement came as Microsoft posted a fourth quarter profit of $2.55 billion, or 47 cents a share, up from $2.28 billion or 41 cents a share in the year-ago period, slightly beating analysts' expectations.
The company reported revenue of $8.54 billion for the quarter, a 10 percent increase over the $7.74 billion for the same period a year ago.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had a consensus estimate of 46 cents a share on revenue of $8.6 billion.
Microsoft's board unanimously decided Thursday to issue the dividend, said chief financial officer John Connors.
''We have resolved several of our outstanding legal issues,'' he said, including a $1.1 billion settlement of a class-action lawsuit filed by California consumers.
''While we still have a number of issues outstanding, we have more clarity in terms of what the potential impact (of other lawsuits) could be.''
He said the Bush administration's proposal to repeal the federal dividend tax was ''just coincidental in timing.''
The dividend is payable March 7 to shareholders of record Feb. 21.
Microsoft will regularly review the dividend program, but hopes to make it an annual payout, Connors said.
''We were the only Dow 30 company that has not declared and paid a dividend,'' he said.
Microsoft shares closed down 92 cents a share, or 1.6 percent, Thursday at $55.35 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Shares fell another $1.71 a share, or 3 percent, in extended trading after Microsoft released its first-quarter results.
The stock split will be on Jan. 27, making the effective dividend payout 8 cents per share. With the split, Microsoft will have 10.8 billion shares outstanding, which works out to a total dividend payout of about $864 million.
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, as the owner of about 1.2 billion shares after the stock split, would receive a dividend of $99.5 million.
The company said its quarterly performance was due to strong sales of computer server software, which increased 12 percent to $1.7 billion, and healthy sales of its Xbox game consoles and the launch of its new online video-game service. Microsoft's home and entertainment sector, which includes Xbox, had revenues of $1.3 billion, a 38 percent increase over the previous year.

"Although I had never surfed before, I found this film compelling not only because it transcends both surf and world cultures, but because it exposes what lies at the most primitive inner core of surfing, spirituality," said Forrest Whitaker.
When I was in the boardroom at NV viewing the movie trailer for the first time, it did something to my core. It was April 2002 not long after Sept 11 and there were news reports of an average of 3 bombings a week in Israel. Even though it was a movie trailer of "Step into Liquid" it was therapy for me.
Seeing that movie trailer for the fist time in SD would make one of the best moments of my cross country trip, right up there with hanging out with GEM and her hubby showing us the sites in SD, to hangin with Pengy and Porscha at "Step into Liquor".

What a bunch of Bunk!
This AOL story paragraph is a little off.
THE HOUSING MARKET'S astonishing strength over the past few years has been a boon to homeowners looking to trade up for nicer, newer or bigger homes. We've all heard stories about the couple who bought a two-bedroom condo, say, in the Boston suburbs in early 1997, sold it in early 2002 for a $300,000 profit and promptly moved into their 4,000-square-foot dream home. Membership in the homeowners' club has its advantages.
Reality check: Sure you can make a $300,000 profit when you sold, but when you bought your new home your still stuck with the same two bed room.
What you need to do...
You sell the two bedroom at a profit, rent an apartment till the market to drops and buy your dream home with cash.
I think im waiting out this market till spring.

A Russian doctor says "In my country, medicine is so advanced that we

Computer Virus Warning
If you receive an e-mail entitled "Badtimes" delete it immediately. Do not
open it. Apparently, this one is pretty nasty. It will not only erase
everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything on disks
within 20 feet of your computer. It demagnetizes the strips on all your
credit cards. It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on
your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt
to
play. If you drive a chevy, it will start missing like a Ford. It will
program your phone auto dial to call only your mother-in-law's number. This
virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank. It will drink all your beer.
It will leave dirty socks on the coffee table when you are expecting
company.
It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine, all the
while dating your spouse behind your back and billing your Visa. It will
cause you to run with scissors then fall and poke your eye out. If the
"Badtimes" message is opened in a Windows 95/98 environment, it will leave
the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to
a full bathtub. It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your
mattresses and pillows, it will also
refill your skim milk with whole milk.
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN!
If you don't send this to 5,000 people in 20 seconds you'll fart so hard
that
your right leg will spasm and shoot straight out in front of you, sending
sparks that will ignite the person nearest you!!!
Not about God, but.....
When you have an "I hate my job" day try this:
On your way home from work, stop at your pharmacy and
go to the thermometer
section. You will need to purchase a rectal
thermometer made by "Johnson and
Johnson." Be very sure you get this brand.
When you get home, lock your doors, draw the drapes,
and disconnect the phone
so you will not be disturbed during your therapy.
Change to very comfortable clothing, such as a sweat
suit and lie down on
your bed.
Open the package and remove the thermometer.
Carefully place it on the
bedside table so that it will not become chipped or
broken.
Take out the material that comes with the thermometer
and read it. You will
notice that in small print there is a statement:
"Every rectal thermometer made by Johnson
and Johnson
is personally tested"
Now close your eyes and repeat out loud five times:
"I am so glad I do not work for quality
control at the
Johnson and Johnson Company."
Have a nice day and remember, there is always someone
with a worse job than
yours.

I posted you story on the AOL message board and got this response.
born in the 50's and raised in baltimore city, like you i have many wonderful memories of my childhood. everything you said is correct. we didn't have the material things but i had breakfast in the back yard with my mom homemade biscuits with honey, saturday evening rides with my dad to gas up because nothing was open on sundays, going out to eat once a week was a big treat,we lived in row homes and every evening all the neighbors would sit outside til 11o'clock while us kids played,tv was fun because we as a family sat and watched it together besides everything was pg then. i walked 6 blocks to school , occasionally heard the warning don't talk to strangers and enjoyed whatever i was given. I wish my children could have enjoyed these things saturday picnics (all day) going into the woods and randomly picking a spot to camp out never thinking someone would want to rob or hurt you, my dad on trips to virgi!
nia picking up sailors and soldiers hitchhiking i would sit on their laps and blow bubbles with the gum they always seemed to have on hand for a kid, we never had ourcandy checked at halloween, we ate it as fast as it was put in the bag. I could go on and on but i won't anyway enjoyed reading your postand reminiscing with you. Have a good new year and god bless you and yours!
