Byrd not ready to call it a career May 21, 2008
Before we get into this column, first a public service announcement for the boxing fans in the U.S. who plan to watch Ricky Hatton fight Juan Lazcano Saturday on the cable network Versus:
Turn down the sound.
Now, there is no offense to the announcers, my buddies Nick Charles and Wally Matthews.
But if you don’t want to be singing to yourself months later, sit in front of the television and enjoy the fight without the sound.
Because if you ignore this warning and watch with the sound on, I guarantee you’re going to be humming, “There’s only one Ricky Hatton,” in the shower for at least the next three months.
The song is sung to the tune of the holiday classic, “Winter Wonderland.” I’m not sure who to credit – blame might be a better choice of words – but I heard it so much when Hatton faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. in December that I still can’t get it out of my mind.
About 35,000 Hatton fans traveled from the U.K. to Las Vegas to support Hatton when he challenged Mayweather at the MGM Grand Garden, despite the fact that the arena only holds around 17,000 or so.
They were in bars and at slot machines and at blackjack tables and in shopping malls and in restaurants all week long. But no matter where they were, they were singing, loud, long and often:
“There’s only one Ricky Hatton/One Ricky Hatton/We’re walking along, signing a song, walking in a Hatton wonderland.”
Those were small pockets of fans. Yes, they seemed to be everywhere, but you encountered them mostly in smaller groups until the night of the fight.
But on Saturday, when Hatton fights Lazcano in his hometown of Manchester, England, 55,000 of his closest friends will be back into the Manchester City Soccer Stadium to celebrate his return after the first loss of his career.
They’ll be singing early, they’ll be singly loudly and they’re be singing well into the night.
Hatton has picked the perfect opponent for the bout. Lazcano, who has fought mostly as a lightweight, is a pressure fighter who moves forward almost without regard for defense.
But in Hatton, he’s going to find a man who is bigger, stronger and better at his game. It will be entertaining while it lasts, singing aside, but Hatton figures to chop up Lazcano and stop him inside of eight rounds or so.
“So it’s very, very important when you’ve got 55,000 fans sitting up to support you the right opponent comes in and Lazcano is my kind of fighter,” Hatton said. “He is good all- around and he’s always coming forward. … I say last fight when people, 55,000 people, want to come to watch boxing, they’ve certainly got the right man in the ring for that.
“So it should be a fantastic occasion, a fantastic atmosphere. I mean 55,000 fans! They’re going to make a hell of a racket. … So this is my way of saying thank you for all the years of support in the many ways that you’ve given me.”
Hatton simply isn’t a welterweight, nor did he have the hand or foot speed to compete with someone like Mayweather. Hatton tried to pressure Mayweather and, while he had limited success, he was taking a great deal of punishment when he got close.
Mayweather took control in the latter third of the fight and handed Hatton his first career defeat with a 10th-round stoppage.
Hatton praised Mayweather, but noted he made tactical errors during the fight. He also pointed out that he doesn’t belong, at least for the time being, at 147 pounds. Hatton’s two worst performances in his stirring career have come when he’s fought as a welterweight, against Mayweather and against Luis Collazo.
But Hatton insists he’s a better boxer than people give him credit for and says his emotions got the best of him against Mayweather. With the crowd roaring and singing and urging him on, Hatton tried to turn the fight into a brawl.
Mayweather played the matador role brilliantly and managed to pick Hatton apart. But Hatton said he needs to play more matador and less bull against Hatton.
“A lot of people said about we got severely outclassed by Floyd Mayweather, well, everyone who fights Floyd Mayweather has gotten really outclassed,” Hatton said. “But I feel that the guy (who beats him) is not going to be somebody who tries to outbox him or out-speed him or anything like that. I think it’s the guy who has tactics like me. …
“In the first couple of rounds, I was moving my head and jabbing as I was going in and that probably was working, but my best intention kind of went out the window and that’s what hurt me really. I mean, I just needed to be a little bit more patient and just realize what possibility has got, not just the crash bang approach, so to speak. And that’s the one I want to use against Lazcano, really. I’ve got this boxing ability more so than Juan Lazcano and I think this fight I could make it as easy as I want to depending upon what attitude Ricky Hatton shows up with.”
Try as he might, Hatton just enjoys putting on a show too much. He’s not going to be on his toes, flicking a jab and circling from Lazcano.
He’ll grit his teeth, stand his ground and trade hard punches until one man can take it no more.
And after Lazcano wilts under the pressure, Hatton will raise his arms skyward and 55,000 Hatton lunatics will be singly “There’s only one Ricky Hatton … “
That’s a guarantee. And if you’re smart, you’ll keep your sound turned down.
Or you’re going to be singing that tune to yourself for the next few months.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

4 Corners 5.21.08: Hatton, Pavlik-Lockett, More
Posted by Alan Berg on 05.21.2008
Hatton tries to start new winning streak, Pavlik-Lockett (yawn), Versus contributing to the sport and the latest five-punch combo.
No bollocks here, it's the new 4 corners, English style
Hatton on the road to recovery
After a mega fight against the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Ricky Hatton will start to rebuild his image Saturday against Juan Lazcano. Hatton moved up to 147 and was knocked out by Floyd "Money" Mayweather, and now the Manchester native goes back to 140 where he still holds the Ring Magazine title.
Hatton is a better fighter at 140 and Vegas is paying 6-1 for Lazcano to pull the upset. Lazcano, who's coming off a 15-month layoff, insists that this fight is his destiny. Juan does have a few factors in his favor. Hatton is not only dealing with the first defeat of his career and will have to regain the magic of a raucous Manchester crowd which should be anywhere from 15-20,000 Brits. Oh and don't forget about the champ's chest infection.
Lazcano will have to establish a strong jab and movement to keep Hatton at bay. If Hatton gets to fight his bulldozer style in England you can forget about Lazcano dethroning the darling of Manchester. The first three rounds of this fight should tell the rest of the story.
The fight can be seen at 3:30 p.m.EST/12:30 p.m. PST on Versus. This is the first marquee champion ever to fight on the young network and hopefully this is a trend that will continue with a good showing from both men on Saturday.
JUST THE BEGINNING TO A WONDERFUL BEGINNING

Johnson Will Be Joined Cageside by Analysts Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo, and Reporter Karyn Bryant
Inaugural Broadcast Live Saturday, May 31 on the CBS Television Network
LOS ANGELES, May 19 - CBS and ProElite, the parent company of EliteXC today announced that play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson, analysts Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo and cageside reporter Karyn Bryant will serve as the broadcast team for "CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS" on the CBS Television Network.
The CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS broadcast team will have the call for the inaugural primetime Network event to be broadcast live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Saturday, May 31 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS.
"Gus Johnson delivers great energy and storytelling to every sports event he calls," said Kelly Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President, CBS Primetime. "He along with Mauro, Frank and Karyn form a talented and experienced lineup of broadcasters, providing great personality, perspective and insight to the audience for the first MMA event on Network television."
"The expertise and knowledge of this diverse cast of announcers will not only excite and inform the hardcore fan, but will educate and entertain people tuning in to watch mixed martial arts for the very first time," said Douglas DeLuca, Executive Chairman of ProElite.
Gus Johnson, a practicing martial artist, has studied Kung Fu and boxing, and recently began studying Jiu-Jitsu. Johnson joined CBS Sports in 1995 as a play-by-play announcer for the CBS Television Network's coverage of college basketball, including the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. He called CBS Sports' HDTV broadcast of the 2000, 2001 and 2002 Final Four and Championship games. He also has provided play-by-play for the Network's NFL coverage since 1998. Johnson's credits at CBS Sports include play-by-play for college football, track and field, boxing, the Hambletonian, and bobsled and luge at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. He serves as host of AT THE HALF, CBS Sports' college basketball halftime studio show, and SPORTSDESK, CBS Sports' wraparound studio show. Johnson is also the radio voice of the NBA's New York Knicks and provides play-by-play for the Madison Square Garden Network's coverage of the WNBA's New York Liberty. He is an anchor and reporter for MSGN's "SportsDesk" and has provided commentary for that network's coverage of the New York City Golden Gloves Tournament. He also has served as host of "AT&T Yankees Scorecard" and New York Rangers and Knicks "GameNight." In addition, Johnson has called play-by-play for the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, Big East Basketball on the Big East Network, college basketball on ESPN and the Canadian Football League on ESPN2. Prior to joining MSGN, he hosted "Black College Sports Today" on ESPN and was the weekend anchor for WTTG-TV Washington, D.C. (1991-92). Johnson graduated from Howard University with a degree in political science.
At 35, Frank Shamrock has cemented his place as a legend in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). After becoming the first UFC Middleweight Champion in history in 1997 by submitting 1992 Olympic Games wrestling gold medalist Kevin Jackson with an armbar in a then-record 16 seconds, Shamrock reached the pinnacle of his career by stopping "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz in what is celebrated as one of the greatest martial arts battles of all-time. Other notable wins have come against some of the world's best MMA fighters including Bas Rutten, Enson Inoue, Jeremy Horn and Phil Baroni. Shamrock is widely recognized as the father of modern-day mixed martial arts, a pioneer who successfully blended the disciplines of wrestling, submissions and striking. Shamrock continues to compete regularly and boasts a dangerous versatility. He is a devout follower of traditional martial arts and grew up idolizing Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. He also grew up as a fan of Muhammad Ali. His favorite television show of all-time is "The Simpsons" and his taste in music is as eclectic as his fighting style, with Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Bach and Metallica listed as his favorites. Shamrock has appeared on television shows "Oz" and "Walker, Texas Ranger."
At the age of 16, colorful on-air personality Mauro Ranallo was discovered at high school by a pro-wrestling promoter and for the next three years, he became a weekly staple as a color commentator on All-Star Wrestling seen across Canada. At 17, he broke into radio and for the next 10 years he was a disc jockey while also calling hockey, football and basketball games on television. He has been the voice of Muay Thai on TSN, host of the legendary Stampede Wrestling television show in Calgary, and the play-by-play voice of "Pride Fighting Championships" pay-per-view telecasts from Japan. He currently serves as host and play-by-play announcer of EliteXC telecasts on SHOWTIME and Hardcore Championship Fighting on "The Score." Ranallo also hosts a radio show on Hardcore Sports Radio Sirius called "Fight Network Radio."
Karyn Bryant has been a part of the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announce team of Steve Albert, Al Bernstein and Jim Gray since 2006. She began her television career as an MTV V.J. after graduating from Brown University with a double major in political science and sociology. Her additional television hosting credits include CNN's "Showbiz Tonight," "For The Love of Money: Reunion Special," "A Wedding Story Live," "Junkyard Wars," "Talk Back Live," "Name That Video," "Movies for Guys Who Like Movies," "Sliders," "Rough Cut," "Inside the Academy Awards," "Sound FX," "FX News," "Daily Video Programming," "Like We Care," "Awake on the Wild Side," "Superbowl Tailgate Party" and "Buzzcut." Bryant grew up in the suburbs of Boston and is a diehard Patriots and Red Sox fan. One of only a few women in history to be part of a regularly televised boxing series, Bryant credits her late father for cultivating her love of the fight game.
The following five primetime matchups are confirmed for the CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS on May 31.

I dont think TFN has even hit the bigtime yet,,,to me they are like a 15 yr old kid...sprouting getting ready for that date that will make him him a man,,i believe with things TFN is doing and things that the world is starting to realize that these to will collide into a man,,,,Look demon maybe im wrong but all the info about mma,,and tfn which hasnt shown us crap makes me believe that something is brewing,,they are getting ready for their date with destiny,.,,maybe im wrong but if your going to say that tfn is big now and it hasnt changed bkmp pps then your not seeing the big picture...but maybe im blind,,,i dont think sooo,,,well see,,,
but it hasnt done what its about to do demon,,,i hasnt done what its about to do,,,,
And here is another thing,,because i believe soo much in TFN and MMA gives some of the bashers the right to want to throw me off the site,,,,Cmon,,,,I will continue to post great things about TFN,,,MMA ,,,And whatever else i may find not to sway people but to show what is about to become of this sport,,,THATS IT<<I AM an open book ask me what i do or who am i go to myspace,,,but to have some people say you need me off this site is bullsh--...period,,,yes i havent been here long like you,,,but i have been in other stocks just as long and lost more then some,,,GOOOO BKMP

CBS Mixed-Martial-Arts Announcers: Gus Johnson, Frank Shamrock, Mauro Ranallo, Karyn Bryant
By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 5/19/2008 4:16:00 PM
CBS named the announcing team for its new Saturday-night mixed-martial-arts fight card, CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights, which answers the opening bell May 31.
Play-by-play (blow-by-blow?) announcing duties will be handled by Gus Johnson, who has announced boxing for the network but is probably better known as the voice of its college-basketball coverage, including hosting CBS' At the Half. But his resume includes coverage of pro basketball, football and the Olympic Games. CBS said he also studies boxing and martial arts.
Also announcing the fights will be martial-arts veterans Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo, who has been announcing EliteXC fights on Showtime. "Cageside" reporter is Karyn Bryant, who has been announcing Showtime boxing events.
Among the scheduled match-ups for the 9 p.m.-11 p.m. May 31 debut are "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler vs. Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith and Gina "Conviction" Carano vs. Kaitlin Young in the 140 lb. class.
Showtime is co-owned with CBS and Showtime Sports will produce the fights.
The Fight Network Starts Exclusive Boxing Live Series This Month In The UK
The Fight Network, newly launched to British fight fans on Sky Channel 427, is starting a series of exclusive live bouts this month featuring some of the world’s most exciting fighters. The live series begins in the early hours of Sunday 18th May when Mexican boxing history is made as WBC champion Cristian Mijares and WBA title-holder Alexander “El Explosivio” Munoz contest the first super flyweight unification title bout in over 10 years..
The fight is to be broadcast exclusively live from the Auditorio Centenario in Gomez Palacio, Mexico, which is Miljares’ hometown. The 12-round co-feature also pits Mexican warriors Omar Salado and Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda in a WBC flyweight elimination bout.
As the No 1 combat sports news channel, The Fight Network will also offer exclusive live coverage of the boxers’ weigh-ins, and live pre-and-post fight coverage on Before The Bell and After the Bell with the channel’s resident expert Mauro Ranallo.
“This unification fight is just the beginning of a massive block of great live events on the channel,” says The Fight Network COO Paul Laberge. “In the future, we will feature British and European fighters live as well as the best from the rest of the world – the kind of contests that fight fans have always wanted to see, but never before had a channel so devoted to their sport. The Fight Network is that channel.”
The Fight Network, which already features daily fight news, British boxing and many hours of top class combat sports - including mixed martial arts (MMA), wrestling and kickboxing - will be making more announcements later this year about regular live events for its growing UK audience.
Sunday 18 May - Mijares vs Munoz: 2a.m. GMT Live in the UK on Sky Channel 427

Shamrock to be analyst on network MMA broadcast
Mon May 19, 3:35 PM ET
LOS ANGELES - Frank Shamrock, a five-time Ultimate Fighting champion and perhaps the biggest name in the sport, will serve as an analyst and color commentator for the inaugural "CBS Elitexc Saturday Night Fights."

The telecast will be anchored by CBS veteran play-by-play man Gus Johnson, a practicing martial artist and mainstay for the network's college basketball, NBA and NFL games. He'll be joined by Mauro Ranallo, who hosts Showtime's mixed martial arts programming, and Showtime boxing reporter Karyn Bryant.
"The expertise and knowledge of this diverse cast of announcers will not only excite and inform the hardcore fan, but will educate and entertain people tuning in to watch mixed martial arts for the very first time," said Douglas DeLuca, executive chairman of ProElite, which produces the Elitexc fights in partnership with Showtime.
Shamrock, a pioneer of full-contact cage fighting and the first UFC middleweight champion, has beaten some of the sport's biggest names, including Tito Ortiz, Bas Rutten, Enson Inoue, Jeremy Horn and Phil Baroni. He once had a guest-starring role on "Walker, Texas Ranger" and is the younger brother of mixed martial arts fighter and former professional wrestler Ken Shamrock.
The CBS event will be broadcast live May 31 from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., at 9 p.m. EDT.
Fox-owned MyNetwork TV was the first network to air mixed-martial arts live with an International Fight League event in November of last year
