Gates Foundation gifts $100 million for grants
Could XKEM get in on that deal? I dont see any reason why they cant.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21208495/wid/11915773/
NEW YORK - The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will commit $100 million over five years to fund fast-track grants for treatments against health challenges facing poor countries.
"The initiative's goal is to encourage scientists worldwide to explore creative, unorthodox ideas that could lead to major breakthroughs," the foundation said in a statement.
Named the Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, it will support hundreds of early-stage research projects, many pursuing ideas that have never before been tested, and involve scientists from a wide range of disciplines, the foundation said.
Under the initiative, applicants will be asked to submit a short funding proposal, which will be reviewed on a fast-track schedule. Exploration grants will be about $100,000 each, with successful projects eligible for more funding. The first call for proposals will be announced in the first half of 2008, with the first grants expected by fall of 2008.
The Global Health Initiative, founded in 2003, has provided more than $450 million to support global health initiatives since its inception. That program has focused mostly on research projects on AIDS and malaria, both of which are key focuses of the foundation in Africa.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation itself has an endowment of about $32 billion from its founders and another estimated $31 billion coming from Warren Buffett, who announced last year he would be giving much of his wealth to the foundation.
Public funding for worldwide programs targeting AIDS, malaria and other diseases afflicting mostly poor nations has been tight, and there have been some recent high-profile failures from private industry.
In September, Merck & Co. halted a study, partly funded by the National Institutes of Health, on an experimental AIDS vaccine. The international study on the developing vaccine failed.

One in 250 babies born in Jamaica has Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), a group of inherited blood disorders characterised by the predominance of sickle-shaped red blood cells. One in every 10 persons has the sickle cell trait. Most people in Jamaica have family members, friends or colleagues who are affected.
http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20071003/health/health3.html
Common fallacies about SCD and the truths are listed below:
1. Fallacy - Only persons of African descent have SCD.
Truth - SCD became common in areas around the equator including areas of Africa, India and the Mediterranean. Thus this condition is also seen in Asians and Caucasians.
2. Fallacy - If your 'sickle test' is negative you can't have a child with SCD.
Truth- Persons who have another abnormal haemoglobin gene can have a child with SCD if their partner has the sickle cell trait.
3. Fallacy - Sickle Cell Disease cannot be prevented.
Truth - If persons who have an abnormal trait or SCD choose not to have children with other persons similarly affected, the birth of children with SCD can be decreased.
4. Fallacy - People with SCD will all die young.
Truth - The median (average) age at which people in Jamaica with SCD die is approximately 55 years.
Treatment methods
Important treatment methods which have contributed to improved survival include:
1. Education. Knowledge of the disease can prevent or minimise the effects of some complications.
2. Newborn screening. This can identify children with SCD before they have problems. Currently babies born at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Victoria Jubilee and Spanish Town Hospitals are screened for SCD.
3. Immunisation. Individuals with SCD are more prone than unaffected persons to some infections caused by particular bacteria. Immunisations are available against two such bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Hemophilus influenza B.
4. Preventative antibiotics. Children with severe forms of SCD are kept on penicillin constantly until at least four years of age to prevent severe Streptococcus pneumoniae infections.
Treatment options which can more radically change the course of SCD include:
1. Bone marrow transplantation. This treatment option is unavailable locally. Most patients in whom this is contemplated have no appropriate donor.
A small percentage of patients die. In some patients, the procedure is unsuccessful as the transplant does not 'take' while in others, there are transplant-associated illnesses and the need to take medications to weaken the body's immune system for an extended period of time.
When successful, the patient no longer has SCD. This process is also quite expensive and requires the patient and a family member to relocate for at least six months.
2. Hydroxyurea. Hydroxyurea has been found to decrease the frequency of painful crises and acute chest syndrome (similar to pneumonia), two of the most common and distressing complications of SCD. This drug is being used in selected cases in Jamaica.
All Jamaicans should ensure that they know whether they are at risk of having a child with SCD and seek to learn more about the disease. We should work towards universal newborn screening. All available treatment modalities should be used to decrease complications and further improve survival.

President Jammeh Urged to Participate in Sickle Cell Treatment
http://www.thepoint.gm/headlines2182.htm
Thursday 2nd August 2007
By Baboucarr Senghore
In an extraordinary meeting held last Friday at Churchill's Town, some concerned parents whose children are suffering from sickle cell disease called on President Jammeh to take part in the treatment of the disease, following what they term as his successful breakthrough in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and Asthma.
The parents made a passionate appeal to President Jammeh to participate in the treatment of what they described as an increasingly prevalent and seemingly intractable disease that could otherwise lead to the loss of many lives.
The president’s intervention, they believe, will be instrumental in pre-empting or averting what they fear to be a possible increase in diseases in the country. They described the disease as dangerous and contagious, calling for urgent attention.
“The successes registered over the HIV/AIDS and Asthma breakthrough is worthy of commendation and the president, for the sake of Allah, should also participate in treating sickle cell,” said one of the patients, adding that the president’s intervention will no doubt help in the cure of the disease nation-wide and, by extension, its eradication.
They described the president’s breakthrough as a total success that will go a long way in boosting the health condition of not only Gambians but the entire African continent.
“The president can do it because looking at his treatment on television, I’m certain that he can cure me,” one of the patients averred.
Killeen residents take walk for a cure

Birds were chirping and there was plenty of sunshine as local residents put on their walking shoes Saturday morning to help researchers find a cure for sickle cell anemia.
The Central Texas Sickle Cell Anemia Association hosted the Walk for A Cure Saturday morning at Andy K. Wells Park in Killeen.
About 200 people showed up for the fun walk, and the CTSCAA raised about $2,000.
Registration was $10 per person. The money collected will benefit sickle cell anemia research.
"I would have liked to see more people there, but every little bit helps," said Ruby Graham, coordinator of the Killeen-area CTSCAA. "Sickle cell anemia is a very serious disease and unless we educate people about what's going on, more kids will be born with it."
Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells.
It occurs in a person's body when red blood cells become sickle-shaped like a crescent moon – instead of a normal circular red blood cell. Sickle cells do not flow through the veins easily and can clump up, causing pain, serious infections and organ damage.
The disease is lifelong, and while many treatments exist, there is no cure in most cases.
Graham said the group needs to raise funds to keep its office open for those who need assistance in obtaining medicine, transportation or just counseling.
"We'll do whatever we can to help," Graham said. "Sometimes, people just need someone to talk to."
In January, CTSCAA will host its annual telethon to raise funds for sickle cell patients. Graham said she hopes those who could not participate in the fun walk will help with the telethon.

I agree brother. I'm still holding my shares, I just keep thinking, "Factory will be done in December" and that helps me deal with the current PPS. You know if we are still on schedule with the factory?
500k dollars or shares?
Now that Pandy has been "Cut from the company" does the company recieve his shares? Or does he keep them? Is that why we're at these awesome levels, so that we can buy his shares out for the minimal cost?
Drift, Are sales still climbing this quarter? Or have they leveled off until the factory has been completed?
Dont we have to apply for .pk, so the stock will stop traiding for a few days until the .pk application is processed.
Comeon Burger man, File the 10Q!!!!!!!!!!!
Lets hope for an ontime filing.
I already tried that. All he would do is tell me that its not open yet, but he would keep me informed
Just that its not available yet, and they will keep my posted by a e-mail mass mailing.
Cause I didn't talk to the company, I talked to a guy that is connected with the Nigerian stock market :)
I confirmed today that the Xechem IPO is going to happen, but I was unable to confirm when. . .
Not sure if this has been posted before:

Xechem plan N2.5billion IPO. From what I gather, they already enjoy good patronage from foreign investors which puts them in good company.

Yea, My wife knows that I am in Xkem, but has no idea how much I am down. For the Sake of me staying alive, I dont go into any details.
My biggest frustration is that the sticking company wont say a d&mn thing. Why stay so silent, unless its either really bad, or their letting their buddies load up. Either way it piss's me off. We know the Nigerian government is behind the company, and that the demand out weighs the supply, so why not update us on the status of it all. Only thing I can think of, is the company is playing the "We're so stinking poor, you better do a prepurchase at a nice price, or we'll have to close our doors" Thats what I keep hoping for.
No kidding man, your 25 million shares, with an average share price in the .0175 range, thats a lot of cash to be down. My average is in the mid .02's. . . . I feel like crying or kicking someones a$$. . .And where I'm in the middle of no where I cant give any xkem people the beat down.
2 things, 1. Drifter head to Burgs house, sit on his couch in the buff, and tell him "You aint leaving until he issues the 10Q" If that doesn't work, I will eat some burretos, then fly down. I can funk his place up like no other, which should get us some sort of news.
2. I say tomorrow we Flood Xkem's phone lines, and all we say is, "Issue the 10Q!!!" then we hang up and call back. I will take the first shift!!!
I think Friday or monday is our best bet at that. We can only hope. I think at this point the PPS has reflected that the company hasn't filed, so if they do, up we go. At least I hope UP we go. IMO
If we knew that we wouldn't have purchased in the .02's
Chicken shit management wont produce the 10Q, thats what happened today.
My comment is this, Why did Swift take the Job of the CEO if he wouldn't complete the job by signing off on the earning reports. At this point I would rather have Pandly he might have been spending money where he shouldn't have been, but at least he would sign the bloody reports.
I guess we will need some pictures to put the debate to rest ;)
Does Sally77 mean that your name is Sally, and your 77 years old. No wonder why you dont want to share you pictures ;0)
I sure as hell hope so, cause this is BS!
Will the Revenue numbers go to the current date? Or be cut off as of june 30th?
I really hope that we dont touch the Pinkeys. . . . I think a lot is going on, ans swift is waiting tell the last minute to say anything about it. But by december we should all be happy (I HOPE)
I'm not sure Pandly was such a fool, Swift seams like a bigger "Out for himself" guy then Pandly. At least Pandly's hookups were limited to family.
Yea, that really piss's me off. I think Swift is holding back information so that his people can keep averaging down, once the PPS hits a level they like then it will be PR time. Total BS completely total BS.
Night all! Hope the 10Q is out soon!!!! :D
I cant wait for the 10Q, all of the info it will have to include due to the late filing. . .We should have a preaty good idea of whats going on once its out!
Thanks for your DD bigD, you got me excited again!!!
90 days! That would be awesome! Is that just the Buildings? Or the Buildings with all Machinery installed, ready for full production?
Me too, Picked up a lot of shares a few years ago for a little under 10$/share. (Before the 2:1 split)
