USC welcomed its inaugural class of master’s students in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine to one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. To celebrate the launch of this unique master’s program, the 30 students gathered for an orientation and ice cream social at the Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC.
“Stem cell biology is and continues to be the hot subject in biomedical science,” said master’s program director Henry Sucov. “Stem cell biology is a field that came with its own technology that gives the opportunity to ask and answer scientific questions that couldn’t be asked and answered before, as well as to address medical problems that couldn’t be addressed before.”

The opportunities at this biomedical frontier attracted an accomplished inaugural class from all corners of the world — with two-thirds of the students from the United States and one-third from abroad. Many students have earned previous master’s or medical degrees and have gained prior research experience in the labs of top stem cell scientists.
A new scientific terrain
At USC, these students are venturing into cutting-edge territory through course work in developmental and stem cell biology, human embryology, regenerative medicine, and the translational and therapeutic aspects of stem cell technology. They are also donning lab coats and gaining hands-on experience with stem cells. During an optional second year, selected students will be invited to further develop these lab experiences into independent research projects.
Throughout the program, students will benefit from the resources of the university-wide USC Stem Cell initiative, which brings together more than 100 faculty members from all disciplines. The initiative offers extensive opportunities to volunteer in labs, connect with mentors and participate in seminars, retreats and other extracurricular programs.
“You will be meeting and seeing faculty from our department, of course,” Sucov said. “You will also interact with faculty from other programs that are part of the larger community of stem cell biology at USC, which encompasses many different groups in many departments, many buildings, many campuses.”
The program will prepare graduates who are applying to medical or Ph.D. programs, entering the growing stem cell pharmaceutical or regulatory domains, or engaging in other academic, clinical or business efforts.
“What we really want to do is to connect you with the medicine of the future to talk not only about the science that’s behind that, but also about the bigger picture that underlies the application of regenerative medicine,” said Andrew McMahon, director of the Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. “There’s a great group of people that you’re going to meet and great opportunities here, and we really hope you make the most of it.”

Adult stem cells help man make amazing comeback
Bryan Hinkle was living the American dream. But a disease called CIDP got in the way. CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) is an autoimmune disease that attacks the peripheral nerves. Bryan was diagnosed with CIDP as a teenager, but the disease was masked and controlled with medication and life went on. Then his disease came back with a vengeance, robbing him of virtually all feeling in his legs and feet. He ended up in a wheelchair, depressed and afraid. “My biggest fear was that I was going to die,” says Bryan of those darkest of days. “This disease was winning and it was going to overtake me. I was just living my days, waiting for the end to come.”
But then Hope made a comeback. Bryan came across news of a doctor in Chicago who had developed a ground-breaking adult stem cell therapy for CIDP. Bryan was accepted into the treatment program, and received a transplant of his own adult stem cells as part of the therapy. Within two days he noticed a difference, and his recovery continued from there.
Today Bryan has his American dream back. He leads a happy, healthy life thanks to adult stem cells, a discovery that’s changing the face of regenerative medicine and giving people real hope in their fight against dozens of diseases and conditions. Bryan says, “I’ve regained my independence. I’m helping take care of my children, I’m being the husband and the father that I dreamt about not too long ago. And for that, I’m just thankful—thankful and amazed!

2 Cases Suggest Stem Cell Transplant Might Ease 'Stiff Person' Syndrome
HealthDay Aug. 26, 2014 | 4:00 p.m. EDT + More
By Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter
TUESDAY, Aug. 26, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Two women with a rare disorder called stiff person syndrome recovered after receiving transplants of their own stem cells, a study shows.
Stiff person syndrome is rare neurological disease that causes stiffness of the skeletal muscles and painful muscle spasms. In severe cases, the disorder makes it difficult to move or walk.
Both of the women were treated in Canada by a team led by Dr. Sheilagh Sanders of the University of Ottawa.
Stem cell transplantation using a patient's own cells has been used successfully in patients with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and scleroderma, the team noted. The treatment involves eliminating diseased immune cells and then regenerating the immune system with a person's own stem cells.
One of the women described in the new report began developing stiff person syndrome in 2005 when she was 48, the researchers said. She began suffering from progressively stiffer legs, overactive reflexes and frequent falling. The woman also, "walked with an abnormal 'tin soldier' gait," the team said.
Despite the use of medication, her condition got so bad that by late 2008 she was forced to quit work and had become "socially withdrawn."
Hoping to help, Sanders and her colleagues treated the woman in 2009 with transplanted stem cells taken from the patient's own body.
One month after the procedure, the patient no longer had symptoms and six months after the transplant she had returned to work and was playing sports.
Nearly five years later, the woman is still symptom-free, the team said.
The other woman was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in 2008 at age 30, and had frequent spasms triggered by cold weather or stress. In the year prior to her stem cell transplant, she "made 47 emergency medical services calls with subsequent hospital visits and had required intensive care unit admission," Sanders' team said.
The woman also became too frightened of being alone during an attack and was forced to quit her job and move back home with her parents.
However, she underwent the same type of stem cell transplant in 2011 and has since returned to work and all her prior activities. She has been symptom-free for more than a year, according to the study published online Aug. 25 in the journal JAMA Neurology.
"Both patients remain in remission without ongoing [immune-suppressing] medication," the researchers added.
While more study in larger numbers of patients is needed, the Canadian team says this is the first report to document long-term and complete remission of stiff person syndrome after this type of stem cell transplantation.
