Los Altos church seeks higher power Print E-mail

When John Benza of Bridges Community Church in Los Altos mentions a “higher power,” it’s usually safe to assume he’s talking about God. But recently, he could also be referring to his church’s new rooftop solar panels.
Bridges last month installed a network of solar panels that Benza said size-wise tops the list of the largest city-permitted projects and will provide anywhere from 9,000 to 20,000 kilowatt-hours of power per month. That’s nearly enough energy to power the entire church and its two onsite schools. Los Altos High School’s recent installation is roughly five times larger.
“It’s very cool,” said the retired Benza, who spent 20 years at IBM. “I look at the history of prior (PG&E) invoices and say, ‘We’re doing well on this.’”
Benza, the church’s resource ministries director, said the $1.1 million SunLogic installation generates approximately 85 percent of the facility’s power on 5,850 square feet of panels.
When accounting for the initial investment, it could be close to a decade before the Christian church on Magdalena Avenue realizes savings, according to Benza. But he added that the move would eventually save the church $1.3 million in utility bills during years 11 through 25.
And all the while, he’ll be tracking it with a program on his laptop.
Estimates show the church has generated the equivalent of running 249 60-watt light bulbs for a year, and saved 31 tons of CO2, which equates to approximately 787 trees, according to the church’s data.
Zach Dahl, a city planner for Los Altos, said it appears Bridges’ solar installation is the largest in the city, though upcoming projects like the David and Lucile Packard Foundation headquarters could dethrone the church’s efforts.
“We don’t really have a ranking” of solar-project sizes, Dahl said. “A vast majority of solar projects are residential.”
Benza, a New York transplant, first approached his church’s board of directors in early 2000, but the technology “wasn’t as proven” at the time, he said. He added that he became interested in solar during his IBM days in the 1980s, and, for non-profits, installing solar is a “no-brainer.”
“With the advancements of technology in the past decade and the increase in the number of financial solutions available, non-profits can easily participate in solar projects without the past burden of large capital outlays,” he said.
Benza said he has contacted EcoTality, a San Francisco-based electric vehicle charging station company, to solicit interest in installing a few charging stations at the church. That, he said, is part of being “plugged into the community.”

Merger out of the way…business is now the focus!

With the SLMU and Sunlogics Power Fund Management Inc merger now complete, the focus can now be on the execution of a business plan in a vast sea of opportunity.
Kudos to Mike and the team that led the merger processes. While I can’t say more about the internals of this particular reverse merger, you find yourself having to deal with both the history of the acquiring shell and the future of the entity which is being merged into it. No easy task to navigate under the best of circumstances…
Life is a step by step process, and so goes a prudent path forward for a corporate entity. Many will look back on the first quarter of 2011 as the beginning of a true opportunity for SLMU shareholders. While John Salamon certainly did his best, and appreciation must be sent his way for having participated in his own way, Mike now has the helm of a group of companies, which now comprise true professionals at many levels (as you can see by the most recent changes on the sunlogics website). Corporate leadership is a special kind, where the amalgamation of different styles of team members, locations, agendas and opportunities are brought together to create a greater whole than any could on their own.
I hope that I have been a positive contributor for the shareholders whose hands I was mandated to hold through this initial process. Many of you took me to task for speaking “in tongue” at times whether here, in private messages, or on investor boards, when I was simply not allowed (either legally or corporately) to divulge more. I realize that this was sometimes like dangling candy just beyond the reach of a child, yet I hope all recognize that I did the best I could to elevate the discussion to levels of ethics, integrity and transparency that were governed by one simple principle…what would I say if my child was sitting on my shoulder?
No matter what the future brings, this period has been a great educational ride, and for that I am grateful to all. I have had the pleasure to interact with a number of people within and outside of the group, who have been professional at every turn.
The opportunity to work with such esteemed companies as GM and Energizer on solar canopies, rooftop systems or other power-related initiatives requires of us an elevation of a bar which matches theirs, yet obviously without the resources that they have access to. It is going to be about partnering in an ethical and fruitful manner for all entities to be able to deliver on their respective agendas.
I leave you today with the one statement that governs all leadership, no matter whether we do so in our personal or professional lives…”leaders turn people on, bosses turn people off”. I hope that those within the group and its accompanying stakeholders will be “turned on” in a manner which benefits all.

Congrats! I was getting really frustrated... glad I hung in!!!!
Good Morning... I was reading Sass's blog post about branding and shareholder value and I am hoping he will realize soon that without shareholders there is no brand. Therefor we should be informed and treated with appropriate respect, or there will be fewer shareholders around here!
Come on Sass, we really need an update!
sass has a post about china from the other day on his blog...
http://sassperess.com/blog/?p=915
I was thinking this would be done by now...where are you super 8????
Sass's blog today says that sunlogics FB page is down today for updating... hope that means what I want it to mean!!!
When I get stressed about the 8k I go to sass's blog and look at the photo at the top where he is serenely playing with butterflies and it just seems to calm my soul.... NOT
