Daily exposures to chemicals in drinking water are of importance in risk assessment to human health. However, exposure assessment of chemicals in drinking water has seldom been performed in China. Until now, no such a detailed exposure assessment was reported in China. The aim of the present paper is to describe the scenes of daily exposure to Cu and Zn in drinking water by the population of Shanghai, China in the summer of 2003. A total of 163 volunteers and/or homes were selected to be statistically representative of the population of Shanghai, China. The Modified Consumption Habit Exposure Model (CHEM) method combined with the measurement of metals concentrations in stagnant water and actual ingested water was used to describe the daily exposure. The Consumption Habit Exposure Model method results showed that water consumption ranged from 1.7 to 2.2 L/day, varied with different age, gender and work location groups. Chemical results showed that the average Cu and Zn concentrations in stagnant water were much higher than those in actual ingested water (13.5 μg/L and 1.55 mg/L vs. 10.8 μg/L and 0.29 mg/L). Exposure assessment results also showed that volunteers had the highest exposure from the time of after breakfast to before dinner, and had the lowest exposure during the 15 minutes before sleeping. It was also showed that there were few volunteers directly exposed to stagnant water, although six hours stagnant time can be reached in most of the homes in Shanghai in the morning. The mean daily exposures to Cu and Zn were 0.36 μg/kg/day and 0.01 mg/kg/day. Daily intakes of Cu and Zn from drinking water by Shanghai people were 1.8% and 4.4% of the World Health Organization recommendations for minimum total intakes of Cu and Zn for adults, respectively.
MORE than 400 people have been sickened by contaminated drinking water in north China's Hebei Province, local government sources said yesterday.
People in four residential communities in Guzhi District, Tangshan City, started to show symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and fever last Thursday. A total of 404 had received medical treatment by midday yesterday. Leakage of the underground tap water pipeline caused the pollution, initial investigation showed. Most of the residents have recovered.
Shanghai may be surrounded by huge rivers but the city is plagued with a chronic lack of clean drinking water. The government is coming to grips with the problem. writes Zhang Qian
City dry for drinking water
Shanghai Star. 2002-06-20
The section of Suzhou Creek near the Sichuan Beilu was seriously polluted by floating weeds early this year.
"The water taken from the Yangtze River is much better than that from the Huangpu River. But of all the water needed by the city, only 23 per cent is taken from the Yangtze River" Chen Guogang,A senior engineer
POOR quality of drinking water is a source of constant complaints among local residents, but a biological pre-treatment technology that breaks down organic pollutants in the water to be adopted by Shanghai Municipal Raw Water Company (SMRWC) may help ease the problem.
Located in the upper reaches of the Huangpu River and near the Songpu Bridge, the SMRWC supplies raw water to 10 water companies, which provide nearly 80 per cent of the city's water.
"Some pollutants in the river are white pollutants," says Wang Huaijun, the company's director.
"Sometimes the water is filled with river plants. In fact the Huangpu River is infected mainly by organic pollutants," says SMRWC engineer Wang Shaoxiang.
However, with the application of this new technology, organic pollutants will be greatly reduced, and this is only one programme the municipal government is undertaking to make the city's drinking water cleaner.
Thirsty for water
Although located near the East China Sea, Shanghai has limited water resources. Of the huge proportion of the region's surface area that is water, only 20 per cent is usable.
The average water available to each person is only 40 per cent of that of the whole nation, and 10 per cent of that of the whole world.
According to a recent survey, every day as much as 5.5 million tons of waste water flows into the Huangpu River, badly harming the quality of the city's water source.
Shanghai, together with Beijing, Jakarta, Tel Aviv, Los Angeles and Houston, is listed by the United Nations as a city in dire need of drinking water this century.
The poor quality of source water is the main problem. In 1994, the concentration of nitrogen ammonia, dissolved oxygen and permanganate in the source water was almost the same as that in the mid-1980s, and meant that it only met class 4 or class 5 standards for drinking water, which may cause some health problems.
Only the water drawn from the Yangtze River by Yuepu Waterworks met the class 2 standard for drinking water. Class 2 is considered okay for drinking water.
Ambitious plan
Over the past 10 decades, the Shanghai Government has taken great measures to improve the city's water quality. The city government recently announced their determination to see that the quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standards by 2010 and that a decade later residents in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world.
One project is to take raw water from the upper reaches of the Huangpu River. The building of the raw water company in 1997 near the Songpu Bridge is proof.
"Nowadays we can get cleaner water from the raw water company than in previous years," says Shi Liang, an engineer with Shanghai Zhabei Waterworks.
"Ten years ago, because of low quality raw water, even after processing and treatment, the final product was only half as clean as today's."
The differences
"Although the water taken from the Yangtze River is much better than that from the Huangpu River, only 23 per cent of Shanghai's water is taken from the Yangtze," says Chen Guogang, a senior engineer with Shanghai Water Quality Monitoring Station.
"But the difference in quality is not so great after treatment by the waterworks," explains Chen, who is responsible for monitoring over 400 water-testing spots over the city every day.
Zhang Jie, a retired worker in Jiangsu Province, says that although his parents live in Shanghai, he is unwilling to visit them every Spring Festival because the water tastes and smells "weird".
What makes water in Shanghai smell different is the chlorine, a chemical that kills germs and bacteria in the water.
"According to the nation's water standard, the chlorine must exceed 0.05mg per litre to kill the bacteria," says Shi. "But in the late 1980s, the water was so badly polluted, we had to use larger amounts of chlorine and the taste was spoiled."
The risks
Drinking chlorine in small amounts will not cause serious harm. What can be harmful, however, are the by-products including chloroform, which chlorine produces when mixed with organic matter. It can increase the risk of cancer, and produces a bad taste and smell.
But as no safe and economical disinfectant other than chlorine has been found, this traditional water processing agent is still widely used in many countries, including well-developed ones as the United States.
"Because water processing may produce some harmful chemicals, the most important thing for us is to get more clean source water," said Shi Liang.
"Theoretically, water from waterworks can be drunk fresh without boiling, but I do not recommend people drink it because the water pipes may be contaminated," said Tang Yixiang, an engineer with Shanghai Waterworks Shibei Company.
"The pipes built before 1968 make up 20 per cent of the city's pipe system. They are more likely to convey contaminated water," said Chen Guogang. "Also we should take an active part in treating sewage, so as to improve the whole water environment."
According to figures provided by the Shanghai Water Quality Monitoring Station, treated water today contains only 70 per cent of the chlorine of 10 years ago.
"Nowadays, water quality in Shanghai is about average compared with the nation's other cities," said Chen. "But strict laws and regulations should be made and enforced to control sewage in our source water. There is still a long way to go."
LOL that's right!
It's all good, imo, The proof will be in the pudding. GLTA

BNK canada
This morning, Bankers Petroleum reported Q2/08 results. As expected, CFPS increased substantially from the previous quarter due to increased prices and production. However, CFPS of $0.096 was approximately 5% below our expectations for $0.102. Bankers had pre-released Q2/08 Albanian production of 5,822 Bbl/d, but we were slightly surprised by both higher than expected operating costs ($14.35/Bbl versus $13.50/Bbl) and lower than expected revenues from U.S. operations.
· Operationally, the company reported that two further wells have been drilled in Albania and have shown positive initial indications. In addition, the company has concluded an agreement to use the Port of Vloreexport terminal (which we see as a positive confirmation of our expectations).
· Bankers also announced the resignation of Richard Wadsworth, President and Chief Operating Officer, andSusan Soprovich, VP Investor Relations. Since the new management team joined Bankers in February, these roles had become somewhat superfluous. This announcement therefore simply marks the completion of the transition process.
· We are raising our forward opex assumptions in recognition of a general upward trend in costs (although our new assumption of $13.00/BOE in H2/08 is below $14.35/BOE reported for Q2/08). Our estimates of near-term cash flows are reduced as a result (CFPS for 2009E is reduced from $0.62 to $0.58). The impact on our NAVPS estimates is more than offset by significant strength in the U.S. dollar since we last published. We therefore maintain our C$8.70 target with an unchanged BUY rating.
· We recognize that the recent share price weakness is partially justified due to weakness in crude futures. However, we continue to like BNK due to strong management and large growth potential from heavy oil resources in Albania. We believe that current share prices imply markets are assuming a long-term Brent oil price of approximately $56.00/Bbl in their valuation of BNK.

Very nice. All the best.
Charts say it might, lower volume fill the gap, higher volume may move. It's better if it fills the gap in my opinion and then the big boys are back in. The pros won't invest at this level with such a gap. Watching closly with finger on trigger. All the best.JMHO
Like to see this fill the gap @4.75 and then i think we will see higher then 6 and 7.00. it could get strength on the drawn support line. It has support on a horizontal level also, if now then 4.75 horizontal this would be nice to fill the gap (you know that I like to fill the gaps) So for now watch and see.JMHO
God bless and protect our investment...God bless this company!!!!!

ABK ON THE MOVE!!!
As you can see this is a 30 day/1 hr., on this scale it is very positive from the 30 MA breakout yesterday morning, I never went out from my share purchase along with NOV 2.50 CALLS. It came off 1.75, so realistic it should move at least 1.75 + 50% = 2.65 + 4.00 = 6.65 on this move up.Gold is really going down, look at GLD
Now @5.94 up 30.26%
