And terms of many of those contracts, such as the one the University of Kentucky has with Nike, include the same language that forbids schools from “polishing-out, spatting or otherwise taping unless for medical reasons, so as to cover or obscure any portion of any Nike logo.”
“The athletic departments need that money at a time when turnstile (attendance) is down and you’re in the situation where ratings, over time, could become a problem for them,” Carter said. “From a fiscal standpoint, I don’t think they will (abandon athletic manufacturer sponsorship ventures).”
While major college athletic departments are bound by contracts that make severing ties with apparel companies difficult, smaller schools don’t have that impediment. One of those is College of the Ozarks, a small private school in Missouri that announced this week that it would no longer be associated with Nike over its ties with Kaepernick.
“We simply chose to not purchase uniforms that include the Nike symbol,” College of the Ozarks spokesperson Valorie Coleman told USA TODAY Sports.
Nike did not provide the school with financial support and coaches at the school seek out their own suppliers for athletic gear, according to Coleman.
