FDA: Some Mexican Candy Contains Lead
21 minutes ago Add Health - AP to My Yahoo!
WASHINGTON - Children shouldn't eat certain candy imported from Mexico because it may be contaminated with small amounts of lead, the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) said Friday.
At issue is candy that contains significant amounts of chili powder, including lollipops coated with chili, and powdery mixtures of salt, lemon flavor and chili seasoning.
The chili powder apparently can become contaminated with lead during manufacturing, FDA said.
Also, FDA cautioned against tamarind, a popular Mexican candy item sometimes mixed with chili. It also can become contaminated with lead if it is sold in poorly made glazed ceramic vessels that can leach lead.
Fruit or lollipops dipped or mixed with chilies are popular among Mexicans, and a market has been growing for them north of the border, particularly in high-immigration areas.
None of the candy contains lead amounts that exceed federal limits of 0.5 parts per million, said Michael Kashtock, an FDA plant safety adviser. But the chili-containing candy has more lead than sugar-based candy does — and candy lead limits are soon to be lowered, as part of FDA's effort to gradually ratchet down the amount of lead in foods, especially those popular with children.
"We're not saying that these levels are unsafe," Kashtock said. Still, "parents would be prudent to not allow children to eat these products."
Even mildly elevated levels of lead can harm children's developing brains. Children can absorb lead in many ways, such as from soil or chipping paint in houses built before lead in paint was banned. Because lead accumulates in the body, experts recommend avoiding even tiny amounts wherever possible.
The FDA said it is working with Mexican government officials to resolve the problem.
Mexican health officials didn't immediately comment, but the makers of some brands popular in Mexico insisted Friday that they meet all FDA standards.

Goldfield Reports 2003 Earnings Results
Tuesday March 23, 11:00 am ET
MELBOURNE, Fla., March 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Goldfield Corporation (Amex: GV - News), a leading provider of electrical construction services in the southeastern United States, reported improved results from continuing operations for the year ended December 31, 2003.
The company's revenue from continuing operations increased 47.6 percent to $32,988,415 in 2003, from $22,343,260 during 2002. This substantial growth was driven by a 61.0 percent increase in electrical construction revenue and a 10.4 percent increase in real estate development revenue.
Income from continuing operations in 2003 was $500,281 (2 cents per share), compared with $353,633 (1 cent per share) during 2002. The increase in income largely resulted from an increase in electrical construction revenue (partially offset by excess costs incurred from adverse weather encountered on several large projects) and a decrease in selling, general and administrative expenses.
Highlights for the year include:
Achieved record electrical construction services revenue of approximately $26.5 million.
Expanded the company's presence in the mid-Atlantic region with new electrical construction division located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which made a positive bottom line contribution in its first year.
Completed and sold the company's second luxury waterfront condominium development, Riomar, near Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Commenced construction on the company's third luxury waterfront condominium development, Cape Club, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, with all units under contract for sale and completion expected in the second quarter of 2004.
Obtained reservations for sale on approximately 80 percent of the units in Oak Park, the company's townhouse-style project.
Bolstered the company's stock repurchase program, extending it through September 16, 2004 and increasing the number of shares purchasable to 2.5 million, of which the company has already purchased approximately 1.3 million shares.
For the year ended December 31, 2003, Goldfield reported net income (including discontinued operations) of $365,909 (1 cent per share), compared to $681,754 (2 cents per share), for the same period of last year. Discontinued operations (which relate to the company's former mining operations) reported a net loss of $134,372, compared to net income of $328,121 for last year. Discontinued operations included significant gains on the sale of real estate last year, while this year it included a pre-tax charge of $210,976 relating to a previously announced Environmental Protection Agency notice of potential liability involving a mining property in the state of Washington, which the company sold almost 40 years ago.
For the quarter ended December 31, 2003, Goldfield reported revenue from continuing operations of $7,938,488, versus $4,404,804 during the same period in 2002. Goldfield reported income from continuing operations of $244,758 (1 cent per share) for the quarter ended December 31, 2003, compared to a loss from continuing operations of $178,923 (1 cent loss per share) for the same period last year. The fourth quarter of 2003, when compared to the same period in 2002, had approximately 70 percent higher revenue from electrical construction and approximately 120 percent higher revenue from real estate development. These improvements largely resulted from the higher levels of electrical construction services and real estate development activities in the 2003 period.
Commenting on the company's results for the year, John H. Sottile, president of Goldfield, said, "The significantly improved results in both the electrical construction and real estate development in 2003 establishes a firm foundation for growth."

GSS- was on bloomberg,, explaining that gold does not require a 'anti-$usd' play,, for it can turn on other currenies like "anti-?" Very interesting not bashing the $usd,, I told you back a few months ago- gold would have to find another currency to fight-dont forget Gold is priced in $usd-not the yen or the euro or the rand-lol. on the f/a side of GSS,, they appear well postioned for any moves up in the metal and discussed this in detail in geo-political terms per location. they also discussed how their past investments in these areas are now coming to frutation.
hhhhhmmmmmm, may take awhile unless vol holds up:

Anyway years ago,, a bunch of us logged on to a floating chat per yahoo. At that time I used a mic&speakers,, then to keep my dogs from freaking out at the 'voices with no bodies' I switched over to a headset-then most of the traders I knew then didnt survive the 2k drop. So i took down the heaset system etc since the floating room sorta died.
Anyway, during the day I do get quite a few 'drop by' traders on the msft i/m.

'India can beat China by 2020'
April 09, 2004 18:33 IST
With an additional workforce of 47 million likely by 2020, Indian economy by then may surge ahead of China whose 'working' populace is estimated to fall by a massive 10 million workers in the next 15 years, experts at a seminar said in New Delhi.
"By 2020, the United States will have 17 million lesser people in the working age-group than at present. The fall in China and Japan will be 10 million and 9 million, respectively," M J Saxena, general manager, Dabur Ayurvet, said at a symposium organised by the Rai Business School.
He said India will have a clear edge over these economic powerhouses and the 'tiger' will certainly overpower the 'dragon.'
Addressing the symposium on 'Can India surge ahead of China?' he said, even though India ranks higher in the microeconomic index, China with its huge investments in infrastructure and a highly liberal industrial policy and has attracted much more foreign direct investment.
"Major FDI in China is being made by the Chinese expatriates. It is time, we also facilitate FDI inflow and do away with our apprehensions about foreign investors," K K Muthu, former President Delhi Management Association said.
Although a good monsoon has helped India attain 10.4 per cent GDP in third quarter of 2003-04, participants still felt that potential in the agriculture sector was untapped.
"We have a history of overprotected agriculture. To surpass China, this sector -- which is the backbone of our economy -- will have to evolve and learn to grow without the government's assistance," Saxena said
burning my last post here,, because of volume,, now if one of the 'hot' stock pickers had discovered it (a heafty front run with friends)- it would be $20 by now,, remember 'they are a goldbug' but since they cant front run the stock,, uggghh, they will have to catch a ride on momo then they are out- same with gold stocks- I know from emails,,
not far from now GROW will release their E's and they will be good,, then more volume will come in,, ceo seems to be doing the cnbc gold stories of late,, and even corrected K&C on their wrong views of gold,, and he did it without the normal doom and gloom pumping that the previous gold anals did it with.. Bet he becomes a regular on the show,, K&C took to him pretty good,, only a matter of time before they start talking to him about his company GROW,, can you say TSAR for a broker?
