Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp. (ZTCOY) has confirmed it will bid for some of bankrupt Nortel Network Corp.'s (NRTLQ) 4G network technology, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing a senior executive.

"Everyone is preparing for it now," ZTE's intellectual property director Wang Haibo told Reuters. "There are some patents that we want, although not too many, but we will be looking to bid for some that include LTE."

LTE, or long term evolution, is the path being chosen by most telecommunications carriers to upgrade existing 3G data networks, Reuters said.

The Wall Street Journal on Feb. 2 cited sources as saying Nortel expects to pick an initial bidder for a highly coveted portfolio of patents within three weeks, drawing from a pool of at least five potential buyers including Apple Inc. (AAPL), Google Inc. (GOOG) and ZTE.
