Mass Megawatts Announces $1.1 Million Pennsylvania Project Sale
* Friday April 17, 2009, 9:13 am EDT
WORCESTER, Mass., April 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mass Megawatts Wind Power, Inc.(OTC Bulletin Board: MMGW - News) today announced the sale of a 550 kW wind power project priced at $1.1 million to a Pennsylvania wind power development company. Electric City Wind Power Corporation, the group purchasing the MATS wind power project, is based in Pittson, PA, which is located between Scranton and Wilkes Barre.
This latest sale of the newly enhanced MAT technology comes on the heels of a $1 million 500 kW wind power project sold by Mass Megawatts to Catherine and Daniel Donnelly, principals of Donnelly Mechanical, the major New York City based HVAC and mechanical provider.
Christopher T. Powell, a senior partner in Powell Law of Scranton, Pennsylvania, who represented Electric City Wind Power in its negotiations with Mass Megawatts, released a statement on Monday, April 13th, that read, in part,
"The 600 kilowatt wind power generation project agreement, along with the strategic partnership between Mass Megawatts and Electric City Wind Power, signify a turning point in wind power development here in the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania has a tremendously rich wind power resource stretching across the breadth of the state, with the potential of 38,000,000 Megawatt hours per year of clean electricity generation."
"Electric City Wind Power was the brainchild of a large group of regional business leaders and interests who have deep social and economic roots that run from Scranton to Pittsburgh and back to Harrisburg. A number of them are major players in the natural gas industry, and they had been engaged in discussions with a number of wind turbine vendors over the course of time."
"Their desire to enter the wind power industry was based on some fairly simple, yet elegant logic. With over 60,000 acres of land under lease for natural gas extraction, including thousands of acres rated at Category 3 Wind Classification or better, it was a natural evolution of their business model to enter the wind energy business. They see a ready made market for the installation of a tremendous load of wind generated electricity over the coming years in partnership with Mass Megawatts and these landowners. "
"Mass Megawatts fulfilled the two prerequisites that Electric City Wind Power had carved in stone, and that no other wind turbine provider could meet, which were that the equipment be economically competitive with fossil fuels and that it be low-profile in height, so as to be acceptable in communities across Pennsylvania that are not open to 200 to 400 foot towers. Municipalities that have enacted ordinances to keep the monster turbines out have reacted extremely favorable to the 65 foot high MAT units. Wind is as much of a natural resource as coal or natural gas, and many townships are not against harvesting it and bringing the financial gain to their people if it can be accomplished in a way that does not destroy their community's view shed and quality of life."
"The principals of Electric City Wind Power, born and bred in the mountain regions of the Commonwealth, understood the concerns and apprehensions of their fellow Pennsylvanians, and are extremely happy to have Mass Megawatts as a strategic partner and the MAT System as their product. They're proud to be leaders in bringing a major opportunity to join the green economy to the citizens of our Great Commonwealth."
John Moran, a senior sales executive with Electric City Wind Corporation, responded to inquiries regarding the company's marketing activities in the Pocono Mountain Region.
"We're engaged in discussions with over a dozen different entities, ranging from the Region's biggest all season resorts, to major universities and colleges, right on through to counties, cities, municipalities and large enterprise industries. I'm expecting that we are going to have a very productive year in the Six County Pocono Region."
"Many organizations that took a pass on wind power due to the resistance to the big turbines are pleasantly surprised when introduced to the Mass Megawatts solution, and they get extremely interested once we get into the economics. Leaders, whether they are coming from the political, academic or business spheres, understand this is where America is going, and they want to be a part of it."
With the favorable political climate directed toward renewable energy, Mass Megawatts is confident in future demand for its high performance, low cost product. For more information, contact the company at (508) 751-5432 or visit: http://www.massmegawatts.com, the company website.

When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57
Obama Bow to Saudi King Labeled 'Shocking'
Wednesday, April 8, 2009 5:50 PM
By: Jim Meyers
In what's been called a "shocking display of fealty to a foreign potentate," President Barack Obama bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia at the Group of 20 summit meeting in London.
"The bow was an extraordinary protocol violation," The Washington Times observed in an editorial on Tuesday.
"Such an act is a traditional obeisance befitting a king's subjects, not his peer. There is no precedent for U.S. presidents bowing to Saudi or any other royals," the editorial said.
Obama offered King Abdullah a deep and prolonged bow from the waist when he met him at the summit, which brought together the leaders of the world’s largest economies on April 2.
The story about Obama’s unusual gesture has gotten scant media coverage in the United States, but a Spanish TV broadcast was picked up on blogs and has created an Internet stir.
"No Americans of any station are required to bow to royalty," the Times stated. "It is one of the pillars of American exceptionalism that our country rejected traditional caste divisions."
The Times editorial also opined that Obama’s bow "to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques does not help his image with those who believe he is secretly a Muslim, and why he chose to bow only to the Saudi king and not to any other royal remains unexplained."
For instance, Obama did not bow to Queen Elizabeth when he first met her last week in London. Subjects of the crown may bow to the monarch but are not required to do so.
First lady Michelle Obama also broke protocol during the Obamas’ trip abroad when she put her hand on the queen’s back. The move caused a bit of tempest in the British press, but was quelled when the queen put her hand on Michelle in what a Buckingham Palace spokesman described as a "mutual and spontaneous display of affection and appreciation."

"The Hand Of God "
April 10, 2009
(Jesus said,) I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you." John 15:5-7
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The salvation story of Jesus Christ reaches around the world. So that the readers of our Daily Devotion may see the power of the Savior on a global scale, we have asked the volunteers of our International Ministry Centers to write our Friday devotions. We pray that the Spirit may touch your day through their words.
In Christ, I remain, His servant and yours,
Kenneth R. Klaus
Speaker of The Lutheran Hour
Some people think of God as an absent father: He created the world, but does not want to get involved. Others think of God as a lenient father who quickly provides health and wealth-or anything else we may ask-if only we have enough faith. Views like these arise from an erroneous understanding of God's qualities and God's plan for our lives. Is there, perhaps, a halfway point?
What is your picture of God? Is it in line with the image the Bible shows us, or is it similar to the notions described earlier?
To believe in an absent God who does not get involved with His creation is to believe in a God without love, who feels no compassion for human misery. On the other hand, to believe in a God whose only role is to fill our needs is to believe we can manipulate God. Such a God would not judge or condemn wickedness and would be an unjust God. Does the Bible encompass these extreme interpretations? Of course not. Each complements the other.
God is a God of love. He loves us and is involved in our lives to such an extent He sent His Son, Jesus, to give us a new life, free from evil and sin. But He is also a just God and will repay the unrepentant sinner with punishment as the Scriptures say.
There is a story that tells of a shop owner, a kind man, who gave a boy a large handful of sweets and told him they were a gift. But the boy, strangely, drew back. After leaving the store, the boy's mother who was with him asked why he had suddenly acted so shyly and not taken the handful of candy when the man offered it. The boy answered, "Because his hand is so much larger than mine!"
God is a God of love. His hand is willing to give us what we need, at the right time. He is aware of our needs, and He tells us to live freely, trusting He will provide. He generously and lovingly extends the hand of salvation towards us and even gives us the faith to take hold of it in order to remain with Him and live under His blessing.
THE PRAYER: Beloved Father, we thank You for that which we receive from Your hand, and for giving us Your great love each day. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

King Obama is showing his true colors. GM and Chrysler made a huge mistake accepting the King's money. First Obama fires the GM chairman now he's scolding Chrysler for "daring" to bring out a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. I can not believe this man is President. GM and Chrysler should just declare bankruptcy and get Obama out of here. I hope Ford can hold out and stay out of this man's kingdom. American cars are much better than the Japanese junk that been coming out in recent years. Ford is producing some amazing cars and their lineup this year and the next is awesome to say the least. Hang in there.
Took a starter position on the pullback. Patience payed off! GLTA!
Small town mayor has it right!
It’s seems more often than not, our Senators from Wyoming vote no a lot. It’s not that they are negative people, but most of the bills that are pushed through congress don’t appeal to us in Wyoming.
If we look at Wyoming and the other states as a couple, we are in dire need of some counseling. Senator Barrasso says it all the time; “Wyoming gets it right, while Congress gets it wrong.” We may be looking at a breakup.
Now, hold on, that sounds un-American. I’m truly red, white and blue but our country is not following the guidelines I was taught when I was a kid. I was told that “a little hard work never hurt anyone” and “the Lord helps those who help themselves” plus “if you don’t work hard you’ll end up like those bums by the railroad track.” My grandma said that to me once. I wanted to go see them but she was busy that day, I guess.
Now, it’s people who don’t want to work still want insurance. People who con and scheme want more money as a bonus. People who want to be millionaires are now asking the government to make them one. People are cheating to get into the Senate and then point their fingers at others as being cheaters. The talk now is the only businesses that should fail are small businesses that, by the way, are the ones that are paying more than their fair share for these others to siphon.
Wyoming puts money in savings and gets concerned when we get close to being in the red. Wyoming has councils and boards that promote business and if someone is scheming and plotting to try to get more than their fair share, we soon know about it.
If we go back to our couple’s scenario, Wyoming is the sober, mindful, and thrifty spouse.
Congress is the drunken, philandering, money pit with bad breath and mental issues.
Maybe it wouldn’t hurt if we asked for one of the stars back off the flag. We have the capacity to be one of the leaders in world energy plus our ranchers and farmers could support us as a country. We could even export and maybe join up with NAFTA for some added benefits.
Of course, some things we would change right away. Our energy issues would be our issues and by the way, those wolves are pesky, you can have them back. And even though the United States is mad at us, they will still send us billions because, hey, it’s what they do.
Wyoming. Nice people, nice scenery. A great country to visit.

We should. It's getting ridiculous around here. DD is king and I've never been more comfortable adding shares. DPDW will be a fun ride in the coming years. I can't believe I can still buy shares at .15. Any shares bought here will be golden in years to come imo. DPDW has accomplished so much in the past 2 years and we're not done yet (heck we may just be getting started). I'm really tiring of all the unwarranted posts(imo). Give our new board a name (whatever) and mainly discuss DPDW on it without all the distractions.
WASHINGTON – Attacking President Barack Obama's grand spending plans, a GOP lawmaker who almost joined the Democrat's Cabinet said Saturday the U.S. must live within its means or risk its tradition of passing a more prosperous country from one generation to the next.
"We believe you create prosperity by having an affordable government that pursues its responsibilities without excessive costs, taxes or debt," Sen. Judd Gregg said in the Republican radio and Internet address.
Gregg, who accepted the job as commerce secretary but then withdrew his nomination because of "irresolvable conflicts" with Obama's policies, has become one of the toughest critics of Obama's handling of the economy.
"In the next five years, President Obama's budget will double the national debt. In the next 10 years, it will triple the national debt," said Gregg, R-N.H.
"His budget assumes the deficit will average $1 trillion every year for the next 10 years and will add well over $9 trillion in new debts to our children's backs," said Gregg, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee. "He also is proposing the largest tax increase in history, much of it aimed at taxing small business people who have been, over the years, the best job creators in our economy."
Gregg said Obama's proposals "represent an extraordinary move of our government to the left."
He acknowledged that Obama "is very forthright in stating that he believes that by greatly expanding the spending, the taxing and the borrowing of our government, this will lead us to prosperity."
In seeking to make the GOP case, Gregg said:
_"It is the individual American who creates prosperity and good jobs, not the government."
_"We believe that you create energy independence not by sticking Americans with a brand new national sales tax on everyone's electric bill, but by expanding the production of American energy ... while also conserving more."
_"We also believe you improve everyone's health care not by nationalizing the health care system and putting the government between you and your doctor, but by assuring that every American has access to quality health insurance and choices in health care."
He said the U.S. "has an exceptional history of one generation passing on to the next generation a more prosperous and stronger country, but that tradition is being put at risk."
The facts about the recent Form 4s:
Shares acquired were all at .124. Opening share price on 3/23 I believe
Robert Chamberlain (Chairman): 750K shares acquired
Eugene Butler (CFO): 750K shares acquired
Ron Smith (CEO): 750K shares acquired
Bradley Parro (VP): 100K shares acquired
Eugene Butler also has 666K options at an exercise price of .124 for the next 3 years beginning on 3/23/2010.
And our Mako President Jacob Marcell has the option of purchase up to 83K each year on the same date for .124.
I have no idea what all the ruckus is about. I believe this has been so blown out of proportion it's getting ridiculous. I happen to believe management is doing a spectacular job in growing our company by leaps and bounds and I've never been more positive going forward. I think the next 12 to 24 months will be extremely positive for us shareholders. If I complained as much as some do on this board, I wouldn't be a shareholder that's for sure. JMHO from a LONG time shareholder.
That's a tough question. Based on management's numbers, they are only showing .0058 eps for 2009 based on about 500K net profit.
I'm still waiting for those detailed projections so I have no idea why they are expecting to generate such large revenues but very little profit. We've been told over and over again that once we start reselling fuel (merchant fuel sales) that margins will go up as much as 500% and most of that would go to the bottom line since there is little additional cost.
Just for fun let's say they start merchant fuel sales on July 1 and we get a 300% increase in gross margins. Since 88% of our revs came from IFL, could we expect about 1.8M x 3 in additional revs. So 2M plus 5.4M = 7.4M minus the same costs as 2008 approx 2.6M = net profit of 4.8M /90M (rounded up) = .053 eps times your multiple of choice.
5PE = .26
10PE = .53
I'd really like to see their detailed revenue projections though.
I like this:
"Flotation Technologies is the only source that can meet this requirement"
Actually I believe the 10K was the instigator for our sustaining rally. Only the "dumb" money sold the next morning. After that, we've seen heavy buying pressure and as much as a 100% jump. The volume we're seeing speaks volumes. DPDW looking strong in many facets. Looking forward to the next 12-24 months. Should be a fun ride.
DPDW is coming alive! It looks like the 10K has finally opened a few eyes as to what is brewing. Recent visits be several investors has also returned a very positive outlook. DPDW is a monster brewing and money spent now should return a large multi-bagger over the next 12-24 months and beyond. Enjoy the ride!
Exactly! There is much more to DPDW than flotec. Much more...
Just catching up on posts and wanted to also say thanks for all your effort in DDing our investment. I wish everyone would take the time and effort to realize why some of us are so positive on DPDW going forward. The more you dig the more you find to like.
They earned them. And we will be rewarded again over the next couple years. Looking forward to the next 10 bagger and much more.
Nice work brwtrpilot! Looking forward to your report! Thanks
Well I guess Steve was right again. He said that those expensive consulting and legal fees would be mostly gone this year and I see they went from 2.5M down to 800K. Now we just need to start our merchant fuel sales and we should easily be profitable. It also looks like their interest expense will be less going forward if I read that one loan change correctly. I don't like that we issued another 11M shares since 9/30/2008 for salary, consulting and probably for Sphaera International Partnerships although I did not see them mentioned in the 10K. Revenue was only up 6% but we already knew that the terminal had been running at full capacity for a while now. We need the merchant fuel sales to increase margins the expected 500% give or take. The outlook continues to improve and I'm still awaiting the detailed projections as to how management expects to generate 67M in revs for 2009.
Shhhhh...
Must just be busy work...lol!
And we know anything is possible around Brazil or ???. It could be big and occur at anytime.
Even if you bought those 10-20K of shares and sold half at a double and rode that rest that would be fine. For me, I like the odds of a multi-bagger in the next 12 months and a huge multi-bagger over the next several years and beyond. If others still want to sell me shares under a dime, I'll double down again.
I'll trust DPDW's vision of growth over an I-hub poster. If they say they can become a billion dollar company, I don't doubt it. Each contract for work keeps getting bigger and bigger and sooner or later we'll start getting these monster contracts we're seeing others getting. A few 25-50M or more contracts will go a long way...lol! Rapid growth will continue for many years imo. And earnings will drive this much higher with time. I think a dime is just plain ridiculous. Period! Like I said, if Deep Down has to prove itself every quarter of 2009 before investors start looking forward 6-12 months, then so be it. Eventually they'll see what's brewing here. Until then, I'll keep adding.
Conservatively in my mind. That's not including any really big contracts that could and will likely come some day.
After looking at the 10K somemore, I realized that DPDW had virtually no interest expense over the past 6 months. If that continues, 2009 net profit could look even better. Instead of my estimate of 11.4M net profit on 60M in revs maybe we're more like 13 or 14M which equates to .073 to .078 eps (based on 178M O/S). I took the 10K a lot more positive than some. I think if you really study these numbers, you'll see how positive 2009 should be. I think anyone selling here is not really studying this 10K and what the next 12 months has in store. Almost all the loss in DPDW was in Q2 of 2008. We've obviously turned that corner along with all those one-time charges. Pretty darn positive for this long.
Here's some numbers to think about for 2009:
I used revenues of 60M.
Gross margin of 39% (same as 2008)
I cut SG&A down from 14.3M to 7M based on all those one-time
costs from 2008.
I left the interest expense at 3.5M
60M x 39% = 23.4M gross profit
subtract 7M for SG&A = 16.4M
I used 1.5M (1.285M in 2008) for depreciation and amortization
16.4M - 1.5M = 14.9M
I kept the interest expense at 3.5M:
14.9M - 3.5M = 11.4M net profit
11.4M net profit / 178M (rounded up) O/S = .064 eps
.064 eps x your multiple of choice
10 pe = 0.64
20 pe = $1.28
30 pe = $1.92
Even on 50M in revs I come up with an eps of .042.
This is what I took away from the 10K so far. 2009 looks real strong!!!
p20
Deep Down’s balance sheet is very strong with healthy liquidity ratios. During the year, we incurred a significant number of one-time cash expenses along with a significant number of non-cash expenses. Deep Down expensed over $2.9 million in amortization of debt discounts and deferred financing costs and costs related to the extinguishment of the $12.0 million Prospect debt. Our bad debt expense increased by $1.4 million as a result of substantially increasing our reserves as well as expensing a receivable for a large customer in Louisiana that filed for bankruptcy during the year. Our general and administrative expenses are up by almost $1.2 million for professional fees in connection with the acquisition of Flotation and the registration statement. General and administrative expense is also increased by $1.2 million in accrual of penalty fees associated with not having the registration statement declared effective by the SEC. These one-time expenses total over $6.7 million. We look forward to 2009 when most of these expenses will not be a part of our operations.
Net Income (loss) p22
Net loss was $4.3 million for the year ended December 31, 2008 as compared to net income of approximately $1.0 million for the prior year. This is due primarily to the costs incurred with private placement of stock and the related registration statement penalty costs of $1.2 million, the costs associated with the acquisition of Flotation, and a $1.4 million increase to bad debt expense to increase reserves and write off a large receivable from a customer in Louisiana that filed for bankruptcy.
not with 310M+ shares outstanding as of Nov 2008.
I get the impression someone bought 100k at .115 earlier and is now trying to sell at .119 for a quick $400 profit. Bid up .118 now.
I hate to tell everyone but Deep Down Inc includes:
Deep Down Inc
Mako Technologies
ElectroWave USA
and Flotation Technologies
Now get out of the way all you scammers and watch DPDW shine! Earnings will explode this puppy over the next couple quarters. We've already seen the nice Q3 and based on all the pending orders, we know 2009 will be much better. We all heard management mention the B word when talking about how big DPDW can get. As far as I'm concerned this is an easy 10 bagger in the next 6-12 months and much more than that long term.
I first saw that a couple weeks back.
Very bullish week! Up 45% from the bottom on the heaviest volume up week in the past year. Very nice!
Written before Obama's executive order. It's well known that not only does embryonic stem cell research kill a human being but it has also caused serious complications or death in patients that have received supposed help via embryonic stem cells. We need to focus on adult stem cells, umbilical cord blood and other lines that don't kill a human being.
Why Embryonic Stem Cells Are Obsolete
March 04, 2009 11:52 AM ET | Bernadine Healy, M.D.
Embryonic stem cells.
Scientists may be growing impatient, but President Obama has been rightly taking his time in addressing a campaign promise to lift the ban on federal funding for research using new lines of stem cells to be taken from human embryos. Even for strong backers of embryonic stem cell research, the decision is no longer as self-evident as it was, because there is markedly diminished need for expanding these cell lines for either patient therapy or basic research. In fact, during the first six weeks of Obama's term, several events reinforced the notion that embryonic stem cells, once thought to hold the cure for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and diabetes, are obsolete. The most sobering: a report from Israel published in PLoS Medicine in late February that shows embryonic stem cells injected into patients can cause disabling if not deadly tumors.
The report describes a young boy with a fatal neuromuscular disease called ataxia telangiectasia, who was treated with embryonic stem cells. Within four years, he developed headaches and was found to have multiple tumors in his brain and spinal cord that genetically matched the female embryos used in his therapy.
His experience is neither an anomaly nor a surprise, but one feared by many scientists. These still-mysterious cell creations have been removed from the highly ordered environment of a fast-growing embryo, after all. Though they are tamed in a petri dish to be disciplined, mature cells, research in animals has shown repeatedly that sometimes the injected cells run wildly out of control—dashing hopes of tiny, human embryos benignly spinning off stem cells to save grown-ups, without risk or concern.
That dream was still alive only a few weeks before this report. Within days of Obama's inauguration, the Food and Drug Administration approved its first-ever embryonic stem cell study in humans: the biotech company Geron's plan to inject highly purified human embryonic cells into eight to 10 patients with acute spinal cord injuries. (The cells are from a stem cell line approved by Bush because it predated his ban.) The FDA should now be compelled to take another look: Are eight to 10 patients enough, or one year of monitoring sufficient, to assess safety? And doctors who participate in the trial will have to ask what every doctor must ask before performing research on a human subject: Were I this patient, would I participate? Would I encourage my loved ones to do so?
Even as the future of embryonic stem cells has dimmed, adult stem cell research has scored major wins evident just in the past few months. These advances involve human stem cells that are not derived from human embryos. In fact, adult stem cells, which occur in small quantities in organs throughout the body for natural growth and repair, have become stars despite great skepticism early on. Though this is a more difficult task, scientists have learned to coax them to mature into many cell types, like brain and heart cells, in the laboratory. (Such stem cells can be removed almost as easily as drawing a unit of blood, and they have been used successfully for years in bone marrow transplants.)
To date, most of the stem cell triumphs that the public hears about involve the infusion of adult stem cells. We've just recently seen separate research reports of patients with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis benefiting from adult stem cell therapy. These cells have the advantage of being the patient's natural own, and the worst they seem to do after infusion is die off without bringing the hoped-for benefit. They do not have the awesome but dangerous quality of eternal life characteristic of embryonic stem cells.
A second kind of stem cell that has triumphed is an entirely new creation called iPS (short for induced pluripotent stem cell), a blockbuster discovery made in late 2007. These cells are created by reprogramming DNA from adult skin. The iPS cells are embryonic-like in that they can turn into any cell in the body—and so bypass the need for embryos or eggs. In late February, scientists reported on iPS cells that had been transformed into mature nerve cells. While these cells might become a choice for patient therapy in time, scientists are playing this down for now. Why? These embryonic-like cells also come with the risk of cancer.
James Thomson, the stem cell pioneer from the University of Wisconsin who was the first to grow human embryonic stem cells in 1998, is an independent codiscoverer of iPS cells along with Japanese scientists. Already these reprogrammed cells have eclipsed the value of those harvested from embryos, he has said, because of significantly lower cost, ease of production, and genetic identity with the patient. They also bring unique application to medical and pharmaceutical research, because cells cultivated from patients with certain diseases readily become laboratory models for developing and testing therapy. That iPS cells overcome ethical concerns about creating and sacrificing embryos is an added plus.
The importance of stem cells for medical research has never been greater, and the scientific and public clamor for unimpeded research is fully understandable. But it's important that Obama and everyone supporting a lifting of the ban be clear with the public on what is involved in this decision; it's more complex than advertised. The ban Bush became famous for restricted the use of federal research dollars just to adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells already in existence at the time of his executive order. Lifting this ban so that researchers can use frozen embryos that would otherwise be discarded—they've been donated by couples who have had in vitro fertilization treatments—has drawn wide and bipartisan support from Congress. It's an easy lift.
The more ethically charged decision—less understood by the public and one Congress has avoided—involves the ban on creating human embryos in the laboratory solely for research purposes. In fact, President Clinton is the one who balked at allowing scientists to use government money for embryo creation and research on stem cells harvested from such embryos; Bush only affirmed the Clinton ban. The scientific community has been able to attract nonfederal money for such work, and it is going on all the time in stem cell institutes. Scientists want relief from the inconvenience and expense of keeping that work and the money that supports it separate from federal dollars.
Reversing the executive orders of two prior presidents on embryo creation, which even the Congress has been unwilling to tackle, is a far bigger issue than lifting the ban on the use of IVF embryos slated for destruction. Obama stands for transparency, and it's important for him to make sure the public understands his decision, including that all stem cells are not the same or created equally.
