RIP Donald Byrd....this is from Bootsy Collins FB page...
William "Bootsy" Collins
WE HAVE SAD NEWS MUSIC LOVERS. JAZZ LEGEND MR. "DONALD BYRD" PASSED AWAY. http://www.spinner.com/2013/02/07/donald-byrd-dead/ Here's a bit of EDUCATION ON HIM & WHAT HE MEANT TO THE LANDSCAPE OF OUR RICH MUSICAL HISTORY. Influential jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd passed away on Monday due to causes not yet revealed, Amoeba Records reports. He was 80 years old.
According to Amoeba, the news was passed along by Byrd's nephew, Alex Bugnon, who said: "I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family."
Byrd launched his career with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the 1950s, and he performed alongside giants including John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, and Herbie Hancock. He was an artist crucial to the roster of the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, recording on a number of big-ticket albums, including the best-selling Black Byrd. In the 1970s, Byrd worked with a fusion group called the Blackbyrds, releasing hits like
"Happy Music" and "Walking in Rhythm".
Byrd's influence was felt long past his peak as a recording trumpeter-- his work has been sampled by hip-hop artists ranging from Public Enemy and Nas to Madlib and the Pharcyde. J Dilla repurposed Byrd's "Think Twice" for a song on his album Welcome 2 Detroit.
"Let's remember Donald as a one of a kind pioneer of the trumpet, of the many styles of music he took on, of music education," Bugnon wrote in a statement, according to Amoeba. "In sum, Donald was an avid, eternal student of music, until his death. That's what I try to be, everyday!! Rest in peace, uncle!"

Buddy Holly's last days in Wisconsin

Buddy Holly's death is usually associated with Clear Lake, Iowa, where he played his final concert on Feb. 3, 1959. The pioneering rocker chartered a small plane to get to his next date, bringing along tour mates Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. They went down in a snowstorm – a tragedy known as the Day the Music Died.
Though the crash site is in Iowa, Wisconsin plays a big part in this story. Buddy headlined a tour called the Winter Dance Party, which began in Milwaukee's Million Dollar Ballroom. It included stops in Appleton, Green Bay and Kenosha, along with small towns in Iowa and Minnesota.
The Wisconsin portion of the tour was brutal. The booking agent scheduled dates haphazardly, so the musicians had to travel hundreds of miles between one-night stands in a blizzard. On the way to Appleton, their bus died on Highway 51 in the middle of the night. They set fire to newspapers to stay warm in the minus-30 temperature.
A couple days later, as the replacement bus drove from Green Bay to Clear Lake, Buddy had a brilliant idea. He would charter a plane for a hassle-free trip to the next gig. That would give him a chance to do his laundry and get some rest.
On the 54th anniversary of the Day the Music Died, here's a commentary about Buddy's fateful decision. It originally aired on Wisconsin Public Radio's Wisconsin Life.
LOL it kinda grew on me.....as does this one...
The song was recorded in 1969 by pianist Les McCann and saxophonist Eddie Harris for their album, Swiss Movement, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
I love the lie and lie the love
A-Hangin' on, with push and shove
Possession is the motivation
that is hangin' up the God-damn nation
Looks like we always end up in a rut (everybody now!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what? C'mon baby!
Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs
Twisted children killin' frogs
Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs
Tired old lady kissin' dogs
I hate the human love of that stinking mutt (I can't use it!)
Try to make it real — compared to what? C'mon baby now!
The President, he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt, they call it treason
We're chicken-feathers, all without one nut. God damn it!
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what? (Sock it to me)
Church on Sunday, sleep and nod
Tryin' to duck the wrath of God
Preacher's fillin' us with fright
They all tryin' to teach us what they think is right
They really got to be some kind of nut (I can't use it!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?
Where's that bee and where's that honey?
Where's my God and where's my money?
Unreal values, crass distortion
Unwed mothers need abortion
Kind of brings to mind ol' young King Tut (He did it now)
Tried to make it real — compared to what?!
(Music break)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?
(spoken)
Donald Dean, Leroy Vinnegar, Benny Bailey, Eddie Harris
