News for 'VRA' - (Viragen Reports on Plans to Produce Multiferon(TM) at New Swedish Manufacturing Facility)
PLANTATION, Fla., Jul 22, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Viragen
(Amex: VRA) (OTC Bulletin Board: VGNI) today confirmed that its Swedish
manufacturing facility in Ersboda is on schedule to commence with the production
of Multiferon(TM) in September. The Company has been upgrading and expanding its
production capabilities as a result of a more aggressive business direction for
its natural human alpha interferon drug. The Company previously reported that it
expects to report data later this year from studies evaluating Multiferon for
the treatment of malignant melanoma.
"The combined manufacturing capabilities of our existing facility in Umea with
our new facility in Ersboda will provide us with the compliance and capacity
necessary to focus on our goal to make Multiferon the world's most prescribed
natural human alpha interferon," stated Viragen's CEO Mr. Charles A. Rice.
Construction of the Ersboda facility was completed earlier this year and is
currently undergoing validation required by the Swedish regulatory authorities.
Mr. Rice added, "I plan to personally observe the resumption of production
activities in Sweden in September. With our current inventory of frozen
Multiferon, which has a longer expiry date than finished product, we are well
positioned to support our ongoing business as well as pending new activities."

I guess some of those farm raised fish could be chipped to keep track of aging and for breeding. After a certain point aging can be tough call on fish.
Cost is biggest drawback so far on US cattle and such. Always want it cheaper. Same reason zoos haven't chipper rare animals yet. Think some private animal farms in FL have done so. GPS tracking is in the works when cost allows.

Angel Corporation (Amex: DOC), an advanced technology company in the field of
rapid and accurate identification, location tracking, and condition monitoring
of high-value assets, participated in a technology exposition for the House
Agriculture Committee on Capitol Hill today.
President & CEO Kevin McGrath commented, "We found the technology exposition to
be exciting and informative. In particular, Digital Angel demonstrated a variety
of technologies in the field of tracking and identification, most notably, RFID
tags and chips, scanners, and state-of-the-art herd management software.
Moreover, I must say we found ourselves in good company, because the range of
technologies together forms an ideal pool for a national livestock ID program
such as the one that Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman has endorsed. Our
technology can be rolled out quickly in quantities to cover the entire national
livestock population as soon as we are called upon to do so."
Commenting about the House Agriculture Technology Exposition, Congressman Gil
Gutknecht, Republican from Minnesota said, "I was pleased that the House
Agriculture Committee held the Livestock Technology Expo today. Agriculture is
truly becoming a high tech industry. Technology providers, such as Digital
Angel, will play a critical role in the future of agriculture by bringing added
value to the U.S. livestock industry."
Also commenting on the House Agriculture Technology Exposition, Congressman
Betty McCollum, Democrat from Minnesota, said, "I am proud of South St. Paul
company Digital Angel and am glad they participated in today's House exposition.
Minnesota families can also be proud that Minnesota companies are helping to
protect the safety of our food supply. As Digital Angel demonstrated at today's
presentation, the company's technology will help ensure that our country has the
best livestock identification and tracking system in the world."
McGrath also said, "Our microchip technology is an inexpensive and efficient
basis for animal tracking, whether it is for the purpose of tracing the source
of a future outbreak of Mad Cow Disease, for other health reasons, or for
efficient herd management. We have implemented programs dealing with cattle,
swine, fisheries -- and all of them have proven effective. We certainly join
with those on Capitol Hill who urge the Department of Agriculture to move with
all deliberate speed to implement a national animal ID program to protect the
health of the nation's herds and the safety of the national food supply."

EBay zigzags ahead of Q2 earnings
By Bambi Francisco, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 11:24 AM ET Jul 21, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Will eBay be the latest Internet company to just match expectations?
Shares of eBay fell in and out of the plus column in Wednesday trading, as investors stayed cautiously optimistic ahead of the quarterly results after the bell from the world's largest online marketplace operator.
EBay (EBAY) fell modestly to $79.67 in recent trading, after reclaiming the $80-plus level earlier. Amazon.com (AMZN), which reports its quarterly results on Thursday, gave up ground as well.
Analysts don't expect eBay to report any big surprises, given the string of "in-line" performances they've seen during the course of the current earnings season.
Recall, Yahoo (YHOO) said that a strong market for online advertising helped the media company nearly double its profits in the second quarter. Yet shares of Yahoo traded down to $30.60 from $32.60 the next day because investors had already baked those results in. Netflix (NFLX) plunged on concerns that the company's second-quarter results revealed that its recent price hike has proved to be more challenging than expected and that marketing costs are rising in the face of increasing competition. Netflix continued to extend losses in Wednesday trading.
Last week, CNet (CNET) issued second-quarter results that just matched expectations, as well. Shares of CNet fell the following four consecutive days.
The stock rose modestly to $9.18 in recent trading, to extend Tuesday's gains. Many investors nibbled at Net shares in Tuesday's rebound, after shares were battered Monday.
Yet many are also waiting for the results from eBay and Amazon.com. See Net Sense: In search of the next meat market.
EBay's second-quarter report will be the big highlight of the week. Analysts expect eBay's profit to rise 71 percent to 27 cents a share from 16 cents in the year-ago period. Quarterly sales are expected to rise 51 percent to $769 million from $509 million last year. For the year, analysts expect eBay to earn $1.19 a share on sales of $3.2 billion. In the third quarter, analysts expect eBay to earn 27 cents per share on sales of $777 million.
EarthLink (ELNK) is set to report Thursday, as is DoubleClick (DCLK). Elsewhere in earnings news, FindWhat.com (FWHT) is set to report on July 26. FindWhat.com is expected to increase earnings to 15 cents per share from 12 cents per share in the comparable period last year. Quarterly sales are expected to grow 56 percent to $27 million, up from $18 million.

Market Commentary 1:35 pm
note Qs nearing -2$ today
As of the time of this writing, the NASDAQ Composite made an attempt to cross back above the 10 day moving average line (red), but has failed. However, the day is far from over, and where the index ends when the closing bell rings will be the important indication. But even then, the flavor is more bearish than bullish. How so? A close above the 10 day line would only question the overall downtrend we've seen over the last three weeks, while a close under it would reaffirm what we already know - that stocks are headed lower.
Tuesday's upside move sprouted from a market that was very oversold. Stocks got hammered on Friday to top of a week that wasn't pretty bearish to begin with. (If you drop anything from high enough, it will bounce.) However, the market can get an itch to buy when the stochastic lines stay under 20 for a little too long. If you look back to March and May, after being stochastically oversold for a short time, the market roared - for a while. We're seeing the same kind of itch on the stochastic charts right now too. That's what sparked Tuesday's move, and this morning's strength as well. But as you can see, it can take several attempts to unwind that oversold problem
What was lacking in Tuesday's surge was significant volume. While volume wasn't light, it wasn't heavy either. And that's what you need to break any market trend - a heavy dose of volume on the key reversal day. Volume has been thin to begin with, and wasn't impressively bullish yesterday either. Today doesn't look like it's going to be any different, so we still have to assume that there is more selling interest than buying interest right now. That's why the Chaikin line is still pointed lower, confirming that the sellers outnumber the buyers.
So we remain relatively pessimistic on the NASDAQ. As we mentioned in a previous update, the floor for this downturn potentially lies at 1825, but it's not likely that the would-be buyers would wait that long before stepping in. Nonetheless, barring a close back above 1927, we're still looking for the tech-heavy NASDAQ to weaken for a while longer.
BOTTOM LINE
The trend is neutral to negative right now (depending on the index), but that's not entirely a bad thing. For you traders who can sell short or buy puts, you stand to see some decent downside moves (and you already have). Fortunately for the buy-and-hold folks, the downturn is going to be relatively contained. In fact, if we're not there yet, we do expect to be hitting a bottom soon. That will set up the 'best six months' of the year, so you may want to start looking for undervalued stocks you want to own for a while. However, none of that changes the fact that we're still in a summer doldrum. As long as the weather remains nice and investor's minds are elsewhere, the market should be just as choppy in the short-term as it has been in the last few weeks.
Enjoy the rest of the week!

Nasdaq market maker Knight Trading (NITE) was cautious on markets, at least related to its niche. "Market conditions deteriorated with the passing of each month in the second quarter, and the near term does not seem to hold much promise for the higher volume and volatility that creates strong trading opportunities for Knight," it said.

News for 'SMTR' - (British Columbia Safety Council to Sell SmarTire Products Leading Canadian safety association to promote and sell Company's tire monitoring systems)
RICHMOND, BC, Jul 21, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- SmarTire
Systems Inc. (OTCBB: SMTR) today announced that the British Columbia Safety
Council (BCSC) will act as a reseller of its advanced tire pressure monitoring
systems (TPMS). The British Columbia Safety Council is an independent,
not-for-profit organization dedicated to reducing injuries and accidents.
BCSC will market the SmarTire for Motorcycles product to its students in order
to raise the awareness and to promote the importance of correct tire pressure
for motorcycle safety. Since its inception, the BCSC has trained over 40,000 new
riders. The BCSC will also sell and promote the entire family of SmarTire
products for buses, RVs, commercial vehicles and automobiles as part of its
various fleet and corporate driver training courses.
"At the BCSC, we are very aware of the critical importance of maintaining proper
tire pressure regardless of the vehicle you are driving," says Ian Thomas,
Manager Road Safety & Traffic Education Services at the BCSC. "This is even more
important when you are riding a motorcycle as the margin for error is smaller
and even a few psi can make a difference. SmarTire's TPMS products offer a level
of awareness and warning that can be a lifesaver when a tire related problem
occurs."
"As our friends at the BCSC tell us, the single most common cause of
catastrophic tire failure is prolonged riding on under-inflated tires," says
John Taylor-Wilson, VP of Sales and Marketing at SmarTire. "Our products have
been designed to specifically address this problem by providing real-time
monitoring and by making the driver acutely aware of the operating state of the
tires. We are extremely pleased to have the BCSC recognize the importance of
this technology as part of its vehicle safety mandate."

Clear! Defibrillators In Homes?
WASHINGTON, July 20, 2004
Here's a Co. that may run but prob get their ass sued off like Taser. Think the maker of defib did have a stock run while back on similar promise. Then stalled with stall in prospects.
(CBS/AP) The devices that can jump-start a stopped heart have been saving lives in airports and shopping malls for years.
Now the government is considering letting people buy the specialized equipment for their homes — where most cardiac arrests occur.
Last fall, a major study showed that portable defibrillators in airports and other public places can double the chances of surviving cardiac arrest.
A company that makes an at-home version says there's a way to save even more lives — and it's asking the government to lift the rule that defibrillators be sold only with a doctor's prescription.
An FDA panel will soon debate the company's request for over-the-counter sales. A chief concern is whether ordinary people can properly use the equipment, which costs about $2,000 dollars.
The American Heart Association is cautiously supporting over-the-counter sales.
But some cardiologists aren't so sure. As one Harvard physician puts it, people would be better off spending their money on health-club memberships.
The automatic defibrillators do not work like the versions used by paramedics, where the user holds paddles to the victim's chest.
Instead, wires are attached to the victim's chest. Those wires measure the pulse and administer shocks. Some versions of the automatic defibrillators generate voice instructions to the user. But dangers occur if the device is used on a metallic or wet surface, where the electric shock can be transmitted to bystanders.
The AHA says about 250,000 people die every year in the United States from sudden cardiac arrest — about half the deaths from heart disease. In a four-year trial of public access defibrillators in two Washington counties, the survival rate was 50 percent.

Pol thing could be slamming it now. Neither guy seems very positive for drugs. Bush hasn't killed it nor helped it. And JK seems afraid to offer stand for fear of offending.
Maybe market sees lower profits ahead if JK policies take hold along lines of Clinton. Less support & lower Med payments??
Very sloppy hence buyers staying away til bottoms.

AMBIGUOUS GUIDANCE, AMBIGUOUS MARKET, AMBIGUOUS ECONOMY
By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst
7/20/2004 9:28:23 AM Eastern Time
Outside of a few speculators sifting through the ashes of tech, the market once again was uninspired. That feeling or lack there of, won't change much this morning. A couple of high-profile companies have posted mixed earnings results. Ford posted earnings per share results that blew away the consensus estimates, but then proceeded to issue ambiguous guidance for the rest of the year. If there is a discernable trend developing this earnings season it is ambiguous guidance. I'm not sure if this is a move back to the days of limited visibility or if corporate chieftains are so afraid of getting it wrong that they'd rather play it safe by taking a small hit to their share price rather than a huge blow if they come short of bolder guidance 90- days later. (This conundrum is another reason why quarterly earnings reports have become laughable. Unfortunately, the joke is on investors.) The type of guidance we've gotten thus far belies those inflation hawks that have circled the market like vultures in the sky. Interestingly, a couple of staffing couples issued weak guidance...hum...what do they know? Fact is that discounting and internal cuts are still driving too much of the bottom line.
Altria (nee Philip Morris) missed the Street's consensus number by a penny, but price discounts helped the company capture more market share during the quarter and that may drive the stock. Offering discounts is a great way to gain or protect market share, which explains why Apple says it will discount the price of its popular iPod. Yet, in what is supposedly an inflationary climate companies are expected to raise prices on products with high end-user demand.
This morning, the latest on housing finally reflects the 18- months of fear and doom predicted by bears. Ironically, the June housing starts number was expected to rise versus the May results. Instead, the actual figure was a pace of 1.802 million houses down from the pace of 1.97 in May. The building permits figure also came in well below the estimates and possibly serves as a harbinger of weak data in the months to come. We knew that housing data had to begin to come in at a slower pace but there is just enough fear in the air that the housing bubble theory could make the rounds again. This brings us to Alan Greenspan. The Fed Chairman has said over and over again that there is and hasn't been a housing bubble. Such bold statements led me to believe that the Fed would use kid gloves with respect to future rate hikes. After all of the data released over the last couple of weeks I'm even more certain that the Fed will not jeopardize the recovery, or prick the housing market - balloon or not.
NYT: Bush is Arab foil ?
Man I'm getting to hate these left wing, too creative, Times Op-Ed writers.
This short piece practically screams Bush is a traitor that
terrorists have no problem with!
And I thought the dentist was bad.
Back to this crap market. WNMI jiggy am & EPUC iffy.
Bid in on LSTA.
(The Manchurian Candidate)
So let's imagine an update - not the remake with Denzel Washington, which I haven't seen, but my own version. This time the enemies would be Islamic fanatics, who install as their puppet president a demagogue who poses as the nation's defender against terrorist evildoers.
The Arabian candidate wouldn't openly help terrorists. Instead, he would serve their cause while pretending to be their enemy.
