NYC Ha Ha and $60 Aug Oil
Glad ya caught that billy. Seeing if you were paying attention. Scunked off on me huh.
Funny. Dennis Miller was on CNBC as guest over lunch. He made point that there are 2 kinds of politicans. Chess and checkers players. JFK being the slow plodding kind while Bush being the straight ahead jump the punk if it's there.
I used to be more the chess type myself. Trading has changed my edge now tho. 9/11 too.
Wish I could find a solid good XP strategy war game like Conflict in Europe ot The Perfect General. Chess like but a little more variety. Mucrosoft tried a few but never got it right. Worse most of those break under XP. Battle Bugs is a
cute one. Tho gets hard at higher levels. Tired of the Warcraft and Civilization ones. Need more like forst ones mentioned.
Pricing in Aug oil options at $60. Batten down the hatches!

John A. Thain, the chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange, is expected to unveil a radical new plan, as early as Monday, to allow large investors to trade big blocks of shares electronically on the floor of the exchange, according to people who have been briefed on the plan.
Called Direct Plus, the plan is an expanded version of a proposal that Mr. Thain made in February, and it represents the stiffest challenge yet to the Big Board's floor trading. For years that community has defended its 212-year-old open outcry model, which relies on a swarm of traders to use their acumen, as well as their capital, to help investors arrive at the best price for a stock.

(Updates to add comments from Nasdaq CEO Greifeld in paragraphs 7 and 8.) . . By Gaston F. Ceron . Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES .
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Aided by a 41.2% decline in expenses, Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. (NDAQ) swung to a $4.8-million net profit in the latest quarter from a year-ago loss, but a slump in trading activity helped send the market's revenue down 18.7%.
After taking into account preferred-stock dividends, Nasdaq, New York, said it earned 2 cents on a per-share basis in the second quarter. In the second quarter of 2003, the market posted a $49 million net loss; after preferred-stock dividends, the year-ago loss came to 66 cents a share.
Like the securities firms that do business on its market, the decline in trading activity hit Nasdaq. Average daily shares traded fell to about 1.7 billion from about 2 billion shares in the first quarter and 1.8 billion shares in the second quarter of 2003. Price cuts and declining market share also hurt Nasdaq. Accordingly, Nasdaq's market-services revenue fell to $68.9 million, down 9.5% from the first quarter and 28.3% from the year-ago second quarter.
The number of initial public offerings of stock also picked up, rising to 41 from 28 in the first quarter and from 2 IPOs in the second quarter of 2003. But Nasdaq's issuer-services revenue also slipped, though less markedly than the market-services revenue. Nasdaq said its annual-renewal fee revenue suffered due to fewer listed companies at the beginning of the year.
Nasdaq was helped by lower costs - total expenses fell to $111.4 million from $119.8 million in the first quarter and $189.5 million in the second quarter of 2003. Nasdaq plans to keep on reducing its costs. The costliest item among Nasdaq's direct expenses, compensation and benefits, was down 20.8% year-over-year and 1.3% from the first quarter.
Nasdaq's results were released after the end of the regular trading session Thursday. Nasdaq's own thinly traded shares were up 7 cents, or 1.1%, at $6.30 on the Over-the-counter Bulletin Board.
But Nasdaq is planning to switch its stock from the OTCBB to the more high-profile Nasdaq National Market. Nasdaq Chief Executive Robert Greifeld said on a conference call Thursday that Nasdaq is aiming to make this move before the end of the year.
Greifeld also said that Nasdaq plans to take back the listing of the Nasdaq 100 tracking stock - known by its ticker symbol, QQQ - when a deal under which the product is listed on the American Stock Exchange runs out in the middle of next year. Greifeld said this would lift Nasdaq's market share in the trading of the QQQ.
Nasdaq's year-ago loss included $45.7 million in costs stemming from a review of Nasdaq's operations, a gain of $5 million from a reversal of reserves related to Nasdaq's shuttered venture in Japan and a $16.6 million loss from discontinued operations.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan has arrested Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian al-Qaida suspect wanted by the United States in the 1998 bombings at U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the interior minister said Friday. He said Ghailani was cooperating and had given authorities "very valuable" information.
Ghailani — who is on the FBI (news - web sites)'s list of 22 most wanted terrorists, with a reward of up to $25 million on his head — was arrested Sunday in the eastern city of Gujrat along with at least 15 other people, Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayyat told The Associated Press.
He said Ghailani has given authorities some useful information. Hayyat would not speculate on whether the suspect was planning any attacks in the United States or Pakistan.
"It would be premature to say anything about this, but obviously we have certain information, some very valuable and useful leads have been acquired," he said.
Hayyat said Ghailani had apparently been living in Pakistan for some time, but it was not clear how long, or how he entered the country.

The overall income Americans reported to the government shrank for two consecutive years after the Internet stock market bubble burst in 2000, the first time that has effectively happened since the modern tax system was introduced during World War II, newly disclosed information from the Internal Revenue Service shows.
The total adjusted gross income on tax returns fell 5.1 percent, to just over $6 trillion in 2002, the most recent year for which data is available, from $6.35 trillion in 2000. Because of population growth, average incomes declined even more, by 5.7 percent.
Adjusted for inflation, the income of all Americans fell 9.2 percent from 2000 to 2002, according to the new I.R.S. data.

SMTR 0.054 battery-less tire monitor PR
(Make it better billy....)
2:44 pm est 7/28/04 - SmarTire Announces Battery-less Tire Pressure Monitoring Technology Company's Next Generation Technology Designed
RICHMOND, BC, Jul 28, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- SmarTire Systems Inc. (OTCBB: SMTR) announced today that it has successfully completed the initial test phase of a new battery-less tire pressure and temperature monitoring system. With the automotive industry in search of a tire monitoring technology that does not rely on batteries, the management of SmarTire believes that its next generation of tire monitoring systems could set a new standard.
Current tire monitoring systems use battery power to transmit pressure and temperature information from sensors inside the tires to a receiver located within the vehicle. The new SmarTire technology involves a passive sensor inside each tire that is energized by an antenna located within each wheel arch.
SmarTire's battery-less system offers significant improvements over current battery powered tire monitoring technologies. Elimination of the battery in the sensor greatly reduces its weight, size and cost. Sensor life and reliability are increased and battery disposal issues are eliminated, creating an environmentally "green" solution. This new approach to tire monitoring allows tires to be rotated or changed without re-programming the system. It also tracks tire revolutions, a critical variable in predicting tire life.
SmarTire's President and CEO, Robert Rudman said, "This is cutting edge technology that we believe has the ability to advance the tire monitoring industry to the next level. While aspects of this technology do exist in other forms, our engineers have successfully applied and extended its functionality to satisfy the particular demands of tire monitoring. For some time now, the industry has been demanding a paradigm shift to a battery-less technology. Although it will take at least a year to commercialize this new technology, we believe that this technical milestone reinforces SmarTire as the technology leader in tire pressure monitoring systems."
Erwin Bartz, Vice-President of Business Development, said, "Achieving this milestone is a direct result of a lengthy research program that leveraged SmarTire's 16 years of engineering expertise specifically focused on tire pressure monitoring. This new battery-less solution conceptually meets the stated goals of many of the automotive manufacturers for the next generation of tire pressure monitoring products."
About SmarTire Systems
SmarTire develops and markets proprietary advanced tire pressure monitoring and technology systems for the global automotive and transportation industries. The U.S. Government, through the TREAD Act, has legislated that all new passenger vehicles must be equipped with tire monitoring systems beginning with a phased implementation in 2004. SmarTire is capitalizing on the rapidly emerging OEM and aftermarket opportunities. The company's vision is to become the preeminent provider of wireless sensing and control systems for vehicles worldwide. Incorporated in 1987, SmarTire has offices in North America and Europe.

THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU LIVE FOREVER
By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst
7/28/2004 9:30:31 AM Eastern Time
I once read an article on longevity and how long people would like to live. Interestingly, many of those quoted said they wouldn't want to live forever. In fact the most poignant response went something like this: "I want to live for as long as I could marvel." I forgot who said it, but if he had his wish and was an avid stock market watcher, it is possible he would indeed live forever. Of course, there would be those days where he'd slip into a coma, but the reality is that this market is something to marvel at more often than not. Take yesterday for instance, how the heck did that consumer confidence number rise? Yeah, I know the canned lines and reasons -I mentioned them in yesterday's midday report- but really, considering all the negative rhetoric that rains down on us from the moment we wake up to the moment we fall asleep, it is had to imagine that respondents would be as upbeat as the report suggested. And it was an equal marvel that the market rallied in response to the news...I say that tongue and check.
Actually, if I could live forever I'd rather marvel at children in the park, a good cigar and a nice glass of cognac among other things.
I've been saying for weeks that the economy is firm, but not as strong as the inflation hawks would have one believe. Well, this morning we got more evidence that the economy is still a toddler and as such, it should be allow to run but watched with caution. The June durable goods data has been released by the Commerce Department and the results came in at less than half the expectations of the pundits. The report is always mentioned with the caveat that it is volatile reading, but when it disappoints many months in a row the message should be taken seriously. The Fed would be wise to skip a rate hike at their next gathering, unless the employment number for July surges past 300,000.
I guess it would be asking too much for the market to follow yesterday's act with an encore. Still, today's session would be just as much a victory for investors as yesterdays if it could simply fight off early weakness and close in positive territory. By the way, there was a key element missing from yesterdays pop, a lack of volume. Lets see if there is more conviction today.

The Election and its Impact on Debt Futures
Refco has a wonderful blurb about the election and debt futures in today's daily commentary:
Excerpt From: Do the Markets Care About the Election? *
We tend to try and stay out of commenting directly on the presidential race and the expected outcomes, but it is the week of the Democratic convention and so we thought we would look at the relationship between the 10yr yield and the market's pricing of a Kerry win. In Chicago, a heavily liberal area, we are hard pressed to see a single Bush banner or sign, but poles have tended to show the race is split relatively evenly. The chart below looks at the Iowa Electronic Market's (IEM) Presidential Winner Takes All market, which has been open since June 1, 2004. The chart below looks at the last price of a Democratic win in '04 vs. the 10yr yield on a day-to-day basis.
Our Read on It
As you can see, the chances of a Democrat (likely Kerry) winning or contending in the election have a direct impact on the debt and equity markets. Bond prices increase, yield decreases and the stock market declines as well.
As the election race develops month by month towards its November climax, it grows closer and closer. Every time Bush's chances of re-election decline, the market falls with it. It seems that the market, along with investors, are pulling for a Bush win in order to push the market forward and continue with the economic recovery that we have been seeing over the 2004 trading year.

not OIL ptg now, switched acrylics
Started with oils back in 1966 at Pratt after move from engineering. On the realist side then - models and such.
Later turned toward abstracts at SUNY New Paltz grad school.
Did ok in Manhattan with large scale acrylics that were like a brightly colored combo of de Kooning and Larry Poons if you can imagine. Touch of Cy Twombly thrown in.
Sold some after couple big shows on east side. Connected to OK Harris, Noah Goldowsky, and Acquavella Galleries. Big loft on top floor on E 18 that was David Bowie's Main Man Studio
in mid '70s. 2 sky lights & elevator opened at floor.
Gave that up for a switch to urban realism and Euro-US
travel. Projected slide for sketching in, then a medium tight photo style approach. Still kinda bright but with a dark side sometimes. Bit like life, right.
I don't sketch too well so projected slides really help.
Then the touch and feel of paint adds to it all.
Gotta tell ya, painting is a great self-expression after the strict riguors of a market days. More physical than photography so more engaged than just snap snap. Do enough of that thinking while trading.
You have a good design eye with the thumbnails you've selected here - and I seriously mean that.
Very refreshing, clever, timely, and fascinating.
Gotta build up a fresh bag of $$ to allow spliting time.
Was Ok in '90s but this market is so demanding that one can't let fly the dogs of war to paint. Can't step away for a week and flow back in. Unless maybe short Enron or Martha.
later then, will check if the list is up... if see anything I'll send to ya with comments. Pleading artist poverty for lack of iHub funding.
PS Where's Andy now that we need him!!??$% These goofball
pols are just killing me.
Now snipers on the roofs of Man'h coops near the Garden for next big bash - Reps.
billy, chips down but financials up
Maybe the fins will lead the chips this time. Unusual but
might be nature of current cycle. Chips lack the singular dominance they enjoyed in PC market of 90s.
World is aflood with chipees but never can have too much money.
Nice close on QQQ!
Don't get too bagged or I'll have to post something nasty about a DRKD 50% Fib reversal, heheheh
Lift one for me. I'm on a roll after didn't thru stacks of old dusty papers to junk them. Had to find my set of slides of my paintings. Can't afford to get the urge right now but fun to look back with pride. Painting is so much more honest than markets could ever be.
Gonna try and catch Mother Teresa tonight in prime time and see how she plays out. I have a scary feeling about this one.
I know. Besides her offbeat foreign manner (Portugal's Mozambique...), there's some odd quality.
Ah. Billy, do you remember that filthy rich older woman in NYC who got that dreadful face lift where she wanted to look like a scary cat. Narrow slit eyes. Forget her deal - something about being married to a rich art dealer and they
had a huge public fight. She threw him out and refused to leave his building. Sued. Got the face lift on his dime.
She was on cover of Daily News for a couple days @1998?
Man, side by side photos of her & Teresa.....can ya create?
More than ever wanta know!! Check his dating life.
Reminded me of Lawrence of Arabia. Time in France, loner, and war adventurer - minus the grand vision for Arabs.

trust, money & terrorists
The account is getting bounced around the Internet -- especially among Wall Street firms -- and is generating much needed debate over what constitutes racial profiling as well as the more ominous question of how safe are we from a new terrorist attack.
It's also a lesson in capitalism, since in many ways money is what terrorists are attacking. Money, as an equation itself, is defined as trust, information and medium of exchange. Those are the requirements for trade.
Apply that equation to Jacobsen's horrifying account and you'll find where we fall down. Trust.

Microsoft tests personalized reports; Ask Jeeves on deck
By Bambi Francisco, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 11:00 AM ET Jul 27, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- In an era of increasing choice, knowing your audience means knowing them personally.
What better way to do that than to search for the news they're interested in, and delivering it to them.?
MSNBC on Tuesday began testing MSNBC Newsbot, a service designed to give consumers personalized news from more than 4,800 sources. MSNBC.com is a joint venture of Microsoft (MSFT) and GE's NBC.
The offering, which is powered by MSN's new search technology, underscores Microsoft's commitment to expand its search capabilities, which the software giant will likely elaborate on when it holds its analyst day Thursday.
The search and personalized news service is also being launched one day after Google, the king of search, unveiled the details behind its upcoming IPO. Google said it will raise $3.3 billion by offering shares to the public between $108 and $135 per share. Buyers must order at least five shares. See full story.
Google has its own news service, which is still being tested, according to Google. Like many news organizations, Google also delivers alerts via e-mail on news topics, available after signing up and selecting search words that will trigger the e-mail.
But Google's news Web site is not tailored to meet an individual need, rather its for a general readership. Google culls information from 4,500 news sources and automatically arranges them based on relevance.
MSNBC.com Newsbot organizes the news based on personalization.
"By providing a variety of ways to personalize the service, people have more control over how and where they get their news, which we're confident will convince people to return every day, much as they would to a neighborhood newsstand," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN Information Services and Merchant Platform, in a release.

Applied Digital to Market VeriChip in U.S.
Tuesday July 27, 12:25 pm ET
Security Systems Provider Applied Digital One Step Closer to Marketing VeriChip in U.S.
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Security systems provider Applied Digital Solutions Inc. on Tuesday said it is one step closer to marketing VeriChip in the Unites States following the Food and Drug Administration's finding that there is no equivalent product on the market here.
Applied Digital said it will immediately file with the agency a "de novo" application, which would allow the company to sell the implantable microchip for medical uses. The FDA has 60 days to respond.
Digital Angel Corp., which develops location sensing technology, makes VeriChip and has licensed the technology to VeriChip Corp., a unit of Applied Digital, for human applications. In October Digital Angel filed with the FDA on behalf of VeriChip seeking the agency's approval to market VeriChip's health care information applications in the United States.
About the size of a grain of rice, VeriChip is a radio frequency microchip which, once inserted under the skin in a brief outpatient procedure, is invisible to the human eye. Each chip contains a unique verification number that is captured by briefly passing a special scanner over the chipping site.
The product is being sold internationally, and was recently implanted in Mexico's attorney general.
In addition to health care applications, VeriChip can be used in a variety of security, financial and emergency identification applications. The health care application is the only one subject to FDA clearance.
Applied Digital shares recently traded up 4 cents to $2.54 on the Nasdaq, and Digital Angel shares were down 1 cent, to $2.84, on the American Stock Exchange.

Very informative LT trading advice w/ charts.
As to CEO. True that usually one CEO isn't much impact beyond own company but this NYC YES guy has some long term standing as a smart operator. I'd ignore him at ones own peril.
Everytime I get ready to think I'm pulling lever for Bush, they pull me back in with stats like loss of net worth under

Worse than that is next 4 years....another Recession??
Probably.
Meant to add thx for pretty picture of the harbor boats.
