AAPL Xupport
Dill, if you connect to a Cable/DSL network you should consider turning on your built-in firewall. If you turned on your firewall you should check to make sure its still running.
Xupport is another Comprehensive Utility for OS X:

Apple needs G5 Consumer systems Now !!!
Dill, I agree with you on Apple and the G5 Desktop systems, they need to roll the 970FX out ASAP at price points that are reasonable.
Apple appears to be making most of its dough from mobile devices these days. So it appears that their is little interest in pushing out consumer G5's. I think this is a big mistake, because the G5 970 FX processor could do great things for Apple's desktop market share.
The engineering behind a G5 powerbook is difficult but not impossible.
Dill, How much Ram due you have in your AI PB ?
Ram seems to make a bigger speed difference when running OS X.
I still don't understand why AMD doesn't have a larger marketshare ....than it has. They make some wicked nice processors at a price that most people could afford.
Altaire4 ...... Go AAPL !!!!
Don't Under Estimate AAPL Now !!!
Kevin this is a switch. I predict Apple will pull it out this quarter and based on my recent IT experiences it looks like Apple is starting to make inroads in the Enterprise market due to the number of new developers that are showing interest in the platform. I believe that 30 dollars a share is not for off. The Mini-iPod demand and interest coming from many of my Windows colleagues is remarkable.
Altaire4 .... Go AAPL !!!!!
Get Real, Glaser needs Apple to fend of Microsoft
If RealNetworks incorporated support for AAC with Apple's FairPlay DRM in their products then this wouldn't be an issue would it.
What incentive does Apple have to open up a 30 plus marketshare to its competitor ?
Apple could very well own this market in a couple of years; it sounds like Glaser needs to cut a deal with Apple before the hPod product launches.
Altaire4 .... Go AAPL !!!
P.S. Looks like new APPLE systems are going to happen in April.

Microsoft, EU in Top-Level Talks as Deadline Nears
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Microsoft's chief executive met the
European Union competition czar on Tuesday in a dramatic final
bid to settle a landmark antitrust case, eight days before
Brussels was set to rule against the U.S. software giant.
Disclosing no details after the surprise talks between
Microsoft (MSFT.O) CEO Steve Ballmer and Chief Counsel Brad
Smith and EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti, both sides
said only that the dialogue would continue.
"Yes, there's been a meeting today. Discussions are
ongoing. That's all I'll say," Monti's spokeswoman Amelia
Torres told reporters.
"Discussions are ongoing," Microsoft spokesman Tom Brookes
echoed.
The negotiations came at the moment of maximum leverage for
Monti, a day after EU governments threw their weight behind a
draft ruling that would find Microsoft broke antitrust law and
require it to change the way it sells audiovisual software.
On Monday, the 15 member countries will endorse a fine
expected to run into hundreds of millions of euros, and on
March 24 the full Commission is due to approve a ruling that
would find Microsoft illegally abused its market dominance to
crush smaller rivals.
If Ballmer and Smith can convince Monti to settle the case,
there would be no legal finding against the company.
TOUGHEST DECISION
Twice before, in 1994 and 1997, the Commission settled
charges against Microsoft without a formal ruling.
The decision may be Monti's toughest in five years as the
EU's top competition regulator.
If he settles, Monti would avoid the certainty of a
Microsoft challenge in European courts which have overturned
several of his department's rulings in the last two years.
But past settlements have not altered Microsoft's business
practices in Europe sufficiently to avoid new charges.
If Monti rejects a deal, he would gain a precedent-setting
ruling which could make future action against Microsoft easier.
But the case could be tied up for years in the
Luxembourg-based courts while the disputed practices continue.
Tuesday's meeting was not announced, but word spread and a
clutch of reporters and camera crews huddled outside the green
steel and glass building housing the Commission's Competition
directorate during the hours-long meeting.
Ballmer and Smith were spirited in and out of the building
in a black panelled van with dark glass windows, painted with
the words "Aalst Wieze" -- a garage in Flanders.

The Apple Boutique
Win, Your absolutely right. The same people said that the price was to high. If Apple cranks up the production now the demand will be satisfied at a much better profit. Its better to have a product theats in High demand than something that sits on a shelf taking up dust.
i think he's pointing out the irony that some of the same people whining about supply are the same people who were whining that the thing would never sell.

Apple & HP Partnership
Since then, obviously Apple clearly has done digital music better than anyone, and it is a huge feather in Jobs' cap that can be directly attributed to him personally, but there is no way to deny he was late to the game in "getting it."
Lang the same case can be made for Gates and Microsoft who was late in the game when it came to Internet browsers. Didn't hurt them any.
Intel invented USB but it wasn't until Apples iMac that the rest of the PC manufacturers to take the technology seriously. Incidentally, it was HP that first introduced USB ports on a PC.
Looks like Carly and Jobs may make beautiful music together. Especially with HP's push for Hpods in China.

Congrats to all iHub AAPL longs ...... eom
Yo, Cat... Apple has always walked to the beat of a different drummer.
I've watched this stock for over Ten years and this is not all that unusual. The Market Makers always under estimate Apple. Then rumors start circulating ... then they panic and then they buy. I still think that $25.00 is a fair price for AAPL, unless some big Enterprise deal is in the offing. I expect another correction is in the offing but I believe the support is somewhere between $25 - $26.
Altaire4 .... Go AAPL !!!
Langostino, glad you have resumed posting on the board.
I cannot say that I agree with all your posts but they are usually interesting none the less.
Lang, why did INTC miss its quarterly estimate ?
Did you know that Apple has a 5% share of the US laptop market.
Apple lead by Jobs has a very bright future. No debt, 4 Billion in the Bank and a 30+ share of the MP3 Player market, the IBM 970 G5 processor that even Microsoft wants for its X Tinker Toy Game Thingy .

George in his flight suit complete with his trademark smirk.
APPLE, MSFT, JOBS And the House of Mouse
Tarmar, I believe this has alot more to do with Eisner getting the boot at Disney and a Steve Jobs Pixar deal which could leverage Apple's Technologies for the House of Mouse.
The iTunes/iPod success story is also a factor but the other news is Microsoft has validated Apples Processor choice of the IBM 970 by choosing the processor to run XBoxes. All of a sudden Apple is considered mainstream. If microsoft does not have faith enough in the reliability of x86 processors for its gaming console then maybe theirs something to Apples G5 claims.
Altaire4 ... Go Jobs !!! Go AAPL
All very astute observations on AAPL's future.
A good analogy is the Telecommunication industry. As High Speed Wireless comes on board the old Wireline Businesses will be going the way of the dinousar. This will not happen tomorrow, its a gradual process, as the wireless technologies improve the wireline businesses will fade away. It may be a decade away or less but it will happen.
Altaire4 .... Go AAPL !!!!
Mini- iPod Sellout is a very Bullish Sign
Kstar, Clearly pointed out that the old measure of PC marketshare is not very relevant to AAPL. The iPod/iTunes has catapulted AAPL into the Digital Music content leader. The Hewlett Packard deal goes along way into cementing that lead. However, its digital movie content that will be the next big battle ground and Apple is poised to dominate this as well if they are aggressive enough; Pixar, Jobs other company could give Apple the clout it needs to deliver Movies on demand with a new digital content device similar to an iPod device.
Altaire4
Welcome Back Kevin !!!
Kevin, I wouldn't count on it ! Apple needs to roll out G5 chips across its whole line if it wants to remain competitive. Apple needs more Digital Life style devices like the iPod to make up for weak iMac desktop revenue. All of this needs to happen soon if AAPL is serious about 5 percent or higher marketshare in the traditional PC marketplace dominated by Dell.
Altaire4 .... Out

Positive Spin on Microsoft G5 XBox
If these are standard 64 bit G5's this is a big plus for both IBM and Apple. The more G5's sold the cheaper the chip cost will drop and this will give Apple more leverage clout on price for G5's in the consumer arena. The big loser could be intel; But, I suspect they will come out with something to counter the 64 bit G5 before the fall of 2004.

Apple Support: Xupport Maintenance
Linda, If your running 10.2 Jaguar you will find Xupport 1 (Shareware) to be a very comprehensive maintenance tool. You should use the permissions tools to verify and repair your system. Tom your right this defecit is scary and it was designed to force massive federal budget cuts. They want to undo the Franklin D. Roosevelts "New Deal".

OT: ORI, Globalization is only part of the problem ?
ORI, Approximately 30% of American jobs are vulnerable to outsourcing. A lion share of Jobs are service sector jobs with average wages that are anemic at best.
I am unsure if protectionist policy would do any more than temporarily slow the tide, and it would also have nasty long term effects on our economy.
The average annual salary under the current administration has dropped from 45,000 - 35,000. Thats 10,000 dollars worth of consumer spending per household that will not be making its way into our consumer based economy.
Many on this board don't understand this because the vast majority of individuals that post on this board are affluent professionals with College degrees.
Manufacturers of food based products are using corn syrup as a cheap filler and extenders in order to save cost and is the number one cause of obesity and the surge in Type 2 diabetes. Why ? because of goverment subsidizes to Archer Daniel Midland.
Starting in 1986 Tax incentives where put in place to move manufacturing overseas. Corporation who move their headquarters overseas are completely exempt from US taxes. The Tax loopholes for big business are well known. Those loopholes need to be closed.
IMHO, The current trade agreements are a part of the problem. Globalization and Free Trade is a Global issue. Would it suprise you to know that many of our trading partners are using protectionism to preserve certain vital industries ?
The answer is in renegotiating the trade agreements and in many cases negotiate to open up many of these closed markets. If that cannot be accomplished then Protectionism and Tarriffs may be warranted.
Best Regards, Altaire4
OT: Fiscal Responsibility
A Part of the reason for the massive upturn in our economy under Clinton was due to a sensible approach in dealing with defecit spending .... that had been built up over the Reagan and Bush Sr. administration. We need a return to fiscal discipline by both political parties.
Is Clinton or Bush to blame if millions of jobs have been lost to a bubble burst and a subsequent recession? Do we give Bush the dubious honor of higher manufacturing output with fewer workers? I don't know.
No, but they where responsible for putting in place incentives for corporations to offshore jobs.
The current administration is at fault for the massive over expenditure of our tax dollars. Would you like G Dubbya and his buddies manage your personal financial situation ?
I wouldn't think so.
Best Regards, Altaire4
OT: Economic and Political Jitters
kstar, one thing is for sure the equity markets get jittery when the market makers sense a shift in political power. I do think your under estimating the net effect that offshoring jobs will do to both consumer confidence and spending and how that will impact the markets.

AAPL and the Current Economic and Political Exhaustion
Cotton, It looks like the market downturn and the political season have left most of us exhausted. To top it off, Nader's presidential bid is cause enough for us to shudder ... imagine Four more years of Dubbya !!!!
I attribute the recent downturn in the market due to a lack of confidence by investors that the current economic picture will improve much in the near future. More corporate layoffs are in the offing as outsourcing labor intensifies.
I see AAPL stock drifting until the results of Apples latest efforts begin to payoff in increased sales and a revamp of Apples iMac line.
On the positive side the Open Source software initatives for both OS X Darwin and Linux are reinvigorating the IT industry. The mountain of Freeware and Shareware Applications for OS X and Linux is staggering. This is putting alot of pressure on Microsoft to produce better products.
BR, Altaire4 !!!
Kurt, In many corporation the IT Cuts are happening anyway ..... so implementing a more effecient Apple server system will have minimal impact and may very well help out moral. The trend has been to add more responsibilities to existing staff and that can make for a very unhappy work force.
Best Regards, Altaire4

APPLE, PIXAR and the Comcast Disney Bid

OT: Rich why do you ASSume that anyone who is not a Bush supporter a Democrat ?
I cannot speak for Cotton or anybody else but I can tell you that as an independent I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats.
I wouldn't even classify Dubbya a Republican ?
OT: If he ain't on meds he should be ?
RichD, Lets examine your fuzzy logic, shall we ?
They would like nothing more than to have the government's nose into every aspect and control of your life.
The Patriots Act which gives unprecedented power by the federal government to examine any and all records and detain its citizens without probable cause was passed by the current republican controlled government.
Sounds like the governments nose is in control of our lives.
they want a "program" for every "problem" that exists.
Labor costs too high for businesses, we'll setup incentives for businesses to offshore labor. Sounds like a program to me.
Big Corporations like Haliburton needs some cash. Lets give them a reconstruction program rebuilding iraq.
Taxes too high, not a problem, we'll write alot of hot checks and bankrupt the federal government and give the biggest tax cuts to the Top 5%. I mean we can always print more money and devalue the dollar further.
Is this what you would call good stewardship ?
Could you enlighten us on how Dubbya has reduced the size of the federal government ?
OT: Bush Says Democrats Want to Raise Taxes
"Let me tell you what's going to happen when they raise them,''
Bush said. ``They're going to say, 'Oh, we got to raise it so we
can pay down the deficit. Uh-uh. They're going to raise the taxes
and increase the size of the federal government, which would be bad
for the United States economy.''
