Herding cattle/market is both an art and a science because it requires a decent amount of knowledge of bovine psychology and behaviour, knowledge of yourself and how you can handle yourself in situations where cattle/market can test you and your patience, the typical "flight zone" or invisible comfort bubble that determines when and how a cow will react to your movements, and finally what cows like and don't like to do in response to how you move with them. Proper knowledge of herding or stockmanship means less stress on both you and the animals you are working with.

Herding is also known as driving, moving, or working cattle/market, the precise term used depends on where you come from. It is done on foot, on a horse, and with or without a dog. Herding applies to not just cattle, but any other domestic farm animal from pigs to ducks to sheep. It can also be done successfully with exotic stock market/ETF's stock like bison and elk.

It is an ancient practice used by humans for over 10,000 years, originally used to gather wild herding animals to hunt and kill them for meat. This shifted to keeping domesticated stock together in protection against predators and to more easily move them from one grazing location to another in nomadic systems. Today, most livestock are moved when they need to be handled for sorting and separating one large herd into several groups for various reasons, vaccinating, weaning, moving from one pasture to another, or moved from pasture to corral to handling facility and vice versa.

This is merely a guide to get you started on understanding what herding cows and cattle is all about. There is much more to learn beyond the scope that this article can get into; Stockmanship schools held near you are highly recommended to attend, plus it's equally highly recommended to gain more experience by working with cattle directly, provided you have the permission of the owner beforehand if they are not your animals.

according to NOAA...the chart below ...20017 is close to the 2005-2006 winter
it appears we could have extreme cold/warm weather this year....from one extreme to the other end of heat and cold
