You do have a point but prices are coming down. But may be not to the level Intel would like to see it. Still trend is in the right direction.
Seems like the price of Ultrabook are coming down. The spec does not look that impressive.

Mas, Intel process advantage is getting very obvious and every one has started noticing that. Once yield on 22nm becomes clear and shows up in IB and other product, the reality will sink in faster.
Intel has finally realized that process advantage is a big asset and it has started to use it in different way than past.
It is being cautious to offer its technology to companies that don't compete with Intel directly. Also it plans to use its process advantage on the products of the compnaies it recently acquired.
Cinematic and Epic` Marketing Campaign is Company`s Largest Since 2003
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
* New Ultrabook marketing campaign is Intel`s largest in nearly a decade.
* Global campaign is aimed at marketing the Ultrabook experience in exciting,
innovative ways.
* Initial TV commercials are set in the American Old West, ancient China and
medieval times.
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
Intel Corporation`s biggest marketing campaign in nearly a decade kicks off this
week with television commercials, online experiences and print ads that the
company is hailing as "cinematic and epic."
The multi-faceted global campaign, called "A New Era of Computing," is aimed at
marketing the Ultrabook experience in exciting and innovative ways to consumers.
Valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, the campaign is the largest marketing
spend for the company since launching Intel Centrino in 2003.
"`A New Era of Computing` is going to be very different from what you`ve seen
from Intel in a long time," said Kevin Sellers, vice president, Sales and
Marketing Group and director, Advertising and Digital Marketing. "This is not a
campaign where we`re talking about the microprocessor or Intel the company.
Instead, we`re giving a cinematic and epic feel to how Intel-inspired Ultrabook
systems are ushering in a new era of computing and making everything else seem
like ancient history."
Sellers was referring to the initial TV spots set in the American Old West,
ancient China and medieval times that humorously position PCs as old-fashioned
and Ultrabooks being, as the campaign theme suggests, "a new era of computing."
The spots were directed by Daniel Kleinman, a British TV commercial and music
video director who also helmed the title sequence for several James Bond movies.
"Desperado" debuts on American television on April 6 after a world premiere
through paid promotion on Twitter -- a U.S. first, according to the online
social networking service - two days earlier at twitter.com/intel. A spin on the
classic spaghetti western, "Desperado" takes place in a saloon where late-19th
century gunslingers frustrated by the lack of performance of their clunky
notebooks feel threatened by this 21st century, Ultrabook-brandishing new kid in
town. The spot highlights the responsiveness and quickness of the Ultrabook.
"House of Flying Laptops," highlighting Ultrabooks` extended battery life and a
nod to such stylish martial arts films as "House of Flying Daggers" and
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," begins in an ancient Chinese temple during the
Ming Dynasty. Two traditionally dressed women, each wielding a bulky,
power-hungry laptop, engage in an epic battle over a single available power
outlet. Their attention quickly turns to a modern woman sitting at a nearby
table and working on her Ultrabook.
Set inside a medieval European castle and underscoring Ultrabooks` small form
factor and high performance, "Round Table" shows a team of less-than-enthused
knights subjected to a slide presentation by their king who is using an outmoded
computer that can`t keep up. Relief comes to the frustrated monarch when a woman
suddenly enters the room with a "mystical device" - an Ultrabook.
Each ad ends with a metaphoric twist as the original ancient setting transforms
to a modern-day one. A voiceover at the end says, "Suddenly, everything else
seems old-fashioned. Ultrabook. Inspired by Intel."
Venables Bell & Partners in San Francisco created the campaign. The agency was
also responsible for Intel`s successful and ongoing "Sponsors of Tomorrow" brand
campaign that launched in 2009. OMD led global media planning of a campaign that
includes TV, print, outdoor, online and other advertisement placements, as well
as in-store and online retail campaigns.
While the debuts of the initial three commercials will be staggered through May
in the United States and abroad, a unique online experience will allow consumers
to interact with the spots starting in mid-April. Visitors to
intel.com/ultrabook can create their own adventures through a series of
decisions while becoming educated on Ultrabook`s product features along the way.
Interlude, an Israeli-based technology company delivering unique interactive
video experiences, created this campaign element that is scheduled to launch in
the United States on April 13 and in 50 countries across 26 languages by the end
of April.
"We`re expanding the stories of the commercials, making them more personalized,
fun and sharable," Sellers said.
"Nothing like this has been done on such an epic scale. We shot scenes for the
interactive experience as we were making the commercials in Spain and China to
ensure that what you see on TV and online will be beautifully interwoven."
The interactive element also will expose the creative to countries outside where
the TV spots will run, a working list that currently includes Australia, Brazil,
China, Germany, India, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Print ads that debut on April 23 in initial markets poke fun at how futuristic
the Ultrabook is. One line reads, "Your great-grandkids just called. They want
their computer back." Another reads, "So futuristic it`ll even feel futuristic
in the future." Out-of-home billboards that debut on April 23 also use humor to
illustrate the speed and lightweight nature of the Ultrabook with such copy as
"Mastodons. Dodos. Bulky laptops." Retail campaigns encompass a range of
executions, from merchandising materials and in-store demos to online ads and
training for retail salespeople.

I saw the follow up on Mad Money. Jim went into details and Microsoft cam eout on top. Both Intel and MSFT were recommended.
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) ? General Motors Co., Monsanto, Intel Corp. and Walgreen Co. are among the stocks that could see active trading on Wednesday.
General Motors Co. GM?shares were down nearly 5% on Tuesday after the auto maker reported March sales that fell short of expectations amid a strong month for the industry.
Intel Corp. INTC?lost 1.3% to $28.06 and Broadcom Corp. BRCM?declined 2% to $38.10, moving lower after a report from the Semiconductor Industry Association that worldwide chip sales fell 7.3% in February from a year ago, hurt by sluggish activity in European and Asian markets.
Monsanto Co. MON?is seen posting fiscal second-quarter earnings of $2.11 a share on revenue of $4.53 billion, according to a survey of analysts by FactSet Research
Walgreen Co. WAG?is slated to report same-store sales for March.
MSC Industrial Direct Co. MSM??is expected to report second-quarter earnings of 95 cents a share on revenue of $554.6 million.
Acuity Brands Inc. AYI?is expected to report fiscal second-quarter earnings of 62 cents a share on revenue of $455.8 million.
That still makes MSFT a better investment.
When Motorola deal was announced, tablets were part of the announcement. They will come with time. May be these devices were already in pipe line by Google before the deal was finalized with Mot. But only time will tell.
Are you that ignorant? We enjoy all these benefits because of the taxes we pay as citizens. Of all the folks you would state that. Coming that from British residents where capitalism is in the form of socialism.
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) share are trading higher Monday following bullish reports on the outlook for the remainder of 2012.
According to Digitimes, the combination of Microsoft's Windows 8 platform and Intel chips would outpace those of Win8 and ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH) by fourfold, or 32 Wintel devices to eight Windows on ARM (WoA) devices by the end of 2012.
The primary reason cited is there are fewer OEMs using ARM-based technology in their devices. Otherwise, compatibility issues and personnel problems at companies like NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA), Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), and QUALCOMM(Nasdaq: QCOM) with respect to lower R&D employment are slowing down the development process.
Conversely, companies like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Lenovo, Acer, Toshiba, and Asustek all have at least one to three Wintel platforms in development.
That means WoA devices wouldn't see comparable production levels until possibly the first quarter of 2013.
Windows 8, expected to launch in the third or fourth quarter of 2012, may give more formidable competition to Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS-based systems. Windows 7 isn't specifically designed to work on tablet PCs, making it tough for Microsoft to compete on the same level as Apple.
Digitimes also mulled the idea of Wintel tablets getting a strong presence in the enterprise sector, though with tablets expected to start at $599 and move higher from there, the price might be an initially tough hurdle for many corporations to overcome.
In afternoon trading, Microsoft shares are up 1.7 percent while shares of Intel are 1.2 percent better.

Semiconductors: Wells Sees Positive Data Points
By Tiernan Ray
Wells Fargo’s semiconductor analyst David Wong today goes down a list of positive recent semiconductor indicators:
Micron Technology (MU) last Thursday beat analysts’ revenue estimates slightly, and actually, it was “significantly better” than Wong had been expecting.
The North American semiconductor book-to-bill ratio was 1.01 in February, up from 0.96 in January, with bookings rising 12% from January, on a rolling three month basis, according to a report from industry trade group SEMI.
An article in trade pub DigiTimes‘s reported that Taiwanese chip designers are seeing a “jump in orders from China-based handset makers,” driving up revenue “sharply” for March and, probably, April. A similar article from DigiTimes said chip suppliers to notebook computers are seeing a lift from rising production of new “ultrabook” computers, “which are lifting the companies’ book-to-bill ratios over 1.0.” Adds Wong, “According to sources, orders placed by notebook clients are more than 50% above the monthly average levels in January and February.”
Digging into the book-to-bill ratio, Wong remarks,
We think that the fact that semiconductor equipment orders have risen in each of the last five months suggests that chip companies are seeing signs that the inventory correction is ending. However, the relatively low book- to-bill ratio suggests to us the semiconductor industry is continuing to make efforts to minimize the risk of excess supply.

Latest Apple iPad Struggles in China; Sellers Cut Price
Published: Saturday, 24 Mar 2012 | 12:21 AM ET Text Size
By: Kathrin Hille in Beijing
Demand for Apple’s new iPad in China is slower than for the tech company’s first two tablets, with the gadget’s price already falling within the first week of it reaching the market.
Unauthorised resellers in Beijing and Shanghai said they had to cut prices by close to 30 per cent over the past week because of sluggish demand. “The market is basically saturated,” said a sales clerk at Buynow, an electronics mall in Beijing.
Apple launched the device in 10 countries on March 16, but has not yet announced an official launch date for China. However, as usual, the new iPad found its way into Chinese shops less than a day after going on sale in the US, smuggled in from Hong Kong and America.
When the new iPad went on sale in Beijing on March 17, the most expensive model carried a 5,200 yuan ($825) price tag. But the price dropped to 4,500 yuan on the first day. Within three days, the price plunged to 3,700 yuan, sales staff at Buynow said.
When the iPad 2 first came out in the grey market, it sold for as much as Rmb8,000, and it took about two weeks for prices to come down to Rmb3,000, according to resellers.
“People are getting a lot more rational about the iPad now,” said Xue Jinpeng, a reseller in Zhongguancun, Beijing’s technology district. “They are a lot more willing to wait until prices come down or even until the official launch.”
Annie Zeng, a secretary at a foreign insurance company in Shanghai and a confessed Apple fan, said she felt the latest iPad offered nothing new for the higher price.
Consumers’ lack of enthusiasm is in stark contrast to the reception given to earlier Apple products. In January, the company suspended sales of all iPhones through its own stores in China after the launch of its latest model led to a riot among black marketeers at its Beijing flagship store.
The weak sentiment is also at odds with the sky-high expectations for the new tablet’s performance. IDC, the research company, last week raised its forecast for global tablet shipments this year by 21 percent to 106.1 million units because of strong demand.
Last year, tablet shipments in China ballooned fivefold to 5.83 million, with the iPad grabbing a 70 per cent market share, according to IDC.
The researcher this week forecast total shipments to rise to 7.23m units this year, but also said that new products were being launched too fast for some consumers to digest. Apple’s Chinese rival Lenovo has recently announced a series of new mobile products.
Over the past two years, Apple has seen rapid growth in China. When the company reported annual results in January, Tim Cook, chief executive, raved to investors about the country, calling demand “staggering” and “off the charts”.
Yes. That is absolutely what I was thinking of but could come with name.
Thanks.
I know what you saying. This is not what you think or I think. The bad wrap which will come is not worth it.
It was not DEC. The company was known for making very good workstations. It was based in Huntsville Alabama. It does not matter which company was in question. Question is of anti trust and the bad name which comes with that.
That will constitute antitrust. It has happened in the past. I don't recall the name of the company. Intel refused to share its product information for it to design its product. Intel was forcing them out of the market.
I agree with that. I never ever stated that these can compete with Intel in the long run.
Foundries don't have the process to match Intel and will never have. They have customers from low end to the high end which can fill their factories. The only direct Intel competitors are AMD and Nvidia. These two are or will be in trouble fairly soon. Others are indirect competitorss like of Qualcom, TI, Broadcom of the world and they can get away with N-1 process or even N-2. It will be while for them to be in trouble. Intel ATOM derivatives will soon catch them and go ahead. The only then they will realise.
The article clearly stated that yield for them are so low on the low process that it can't fulfill all orders. So it is loss of business and additional expenses of the new process. So going forward the strategy is stay on current process.
These companies don't have the money to develop new process. Falling behind Intel has been there for so long and analysts have not been able to get so far. By each new process the gap is getting wider and it is becoming clear and obvious to even dumb analysts.
I agree with this. Time is on Intel side with manufacturing advantage. with passage of time, Intel advantage will become impossible to overcome. Article clearly states what other semi manufacturers are thinking. Stay on existing process is the only course open to them. ROI on new process for them is not worth it.
First one is the hardest to do. I have a friend and it took me 5 years of constant talking to him about the benefits of covered call.
On selling puts, broker will ask for collateral of funds. At least
Schwab asks me to do so.
March 20 (Reuters) - Intel Corp and Micron Technology Inc are likely to bid for Elpida Memory Inc which will take bids from investors interested in sponsoring its turnaround from bankruptcy, the Nikkei business daily reported.
Elpida is aiming to make a selection in May and will hold the first round of bidding in March, the daily said.
Nomura Securities Co will serve as Elpida's adviser for the selection process, the report said.
Besides Micron, other likely bidders include Formosa Plastics Group , Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co , Toshiba Corp as well as multiple investment funds which are also showing interest in backing Elpida's reorganization, the Nikkei reported.
Elpida may end up choosing more than one sponsor, the daily reported.
Elpida's decision to take bids for a sponsor comes as the company considers debtor-in-possession financing for its reorganization -- a move that would allow its current management to stay on and could anger creditors who think they should resign to take responsibility for the company's collapse, the report said.
Yes to them parts are parts but Apple relationship with Intel is not great. It may be OK as apple needs Intel for MACs. But Intel should not help Apple to fab parts for iphone or ipads.
We have been talking about Apple and Intel relationship. And have been advocating that Intel should build Apple chips. See below. apple is eliminating Intel where ever possible.
-----------------
NEW YORK, March 18 (Reuters) - A fast-growing market for smartphones and tablets could lift shares of chipmaker Qualcomm by 30 percent in the coming year, the financial newsweekly Barron's said in its March 19 edition.
Qualcomm chips are in the latest iPads and iPhones from Apple , based on teardowns of those machines, since Apple recently chose Qualcomm over Intel as a supplier of communications chips, according to Barron's.
Other customers include Nokia , Samsung, and Motorola , and chipsets for video and graphics could drive Microsoft's Windows 8 tablets when those Microsoft products reach the market, the investors' weekly said.
Qualcomm shares closed Friday at $65.41 on the Nasda
Stacy comments are clear. It will have to be x86 arch even if it is Apple or sony. It is a standard answer where Intel will always say if it does make sense we will do so. The article clearly states that non x86 will be a tough decision.
Intel is trying to establish itself in smart phones and tablets market. This will go against that. Once it has more than 50% share, then Apple will beg Intel for its process advantage. There is time for every thing but not now.
I do agree and Intel should not fab custom parts for any one. That is Intel strength and so called IP(manufacturing). Intel has spent so much money to acquire that.
I do agree completely. But based on my information about Apple and Intel how it works, their arrangement has to be at the highest level.
At lower level, Intel will not give preferred pricing or details of internal road map unless Apple shows its hand. Apple does not do that. It is very secretive company.
I am not sure analyst know what he is talking about. I don't recall Intel was behind AMD. On top of that comparison was not core to core.

Intel: Romley Finally Bests AMD in Floating Point, Says Wells

Intel‘s (INTC) latest server processor, the family of chips known colloquially as “Romley,” has made “big” performance gains over predecessor chips, writes Wells Fargo analyst David Wong in a note to clients today, and should best Advanced Micro Devices‘s (AMD) best server offering.
Wong, who has an Outperform rating on Intel shares, notes that data from the industry standards group SPEC (Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation) show Romley chips having 60% to 70% better integer performance than Intel’s previous “Westmere” family of server processors, and 75% to 85% better floating point performance than AMD’s parts.
Intel formally unveiled the long-awaited chips, officially dubbed the “E5-2600” last week. Wong wrote that day that Intel should see benefits from the chips’ sales this quarter.
Today he writes that the performance improvement was more than he expected, which he thought might be only a 33% increase. As for AMD, Intel has “finally overtaken AMD in floating point performance,” writes Wong.
With Romley, Intel now has a clear performance lead over AMD’s Bulldozer-based server chips, admittedly though at a higher price. We think that the large increase in Intel’s floating point score suggests that Intel does indeed receive a benefit from its Advanced Vector Extension (AVX) instruction set. We believe that good floating point performance is helpful in high-performance computing systems (which often use high-end server chips).

Atom may be tarnished in your eyes or in the eyes of analysts but it is billion $ business-may be more in embedded area. with smart phones/tablets in future, things will change completely. It is matter of time. Manufacturing lead can't be held back for too long.
Based on this, Intel is ready to ramp up Medfield process to meet demand from 4-5 customers Intel announced. There may be more customers in the wings. There must be pent up demand.
One thing is certain. GPU discrete business is going away. Even Charlie who is most pessimist of all about Intel is seeing the same. second point which stands out the advantage Intel has over others from manufacturing point of view.
Till a few days back you were concerned about this server launch, Medfield smartphones and delay with IB. Now E5 is conformed, the other two also will go away with time. Delays are insignificant.
I like this comment even better.

Eight improved cores, 16 threads, integrated 40 lane PCIe 3.0: the new socket 2011 Xeon E5-2660 manages to package it all in a very modest power envelope of 95W TDP (at 2.2 GHz). If you read the Intel Xeon E5 paper specs, it becomes more and more likely that Intel has pulled off another "Nehalem": much better performance, richer features while consuming less power. Yes, as much as we like a good fight, the question is not whether Intel will outperform the competition and the previous Intel generation but by how much...
