Don't you fellas go stroking more than each other's egos now.....LOL!!! Intel's retail subsidiary just canned their annual analyst meeting and lost a $700kk contract - not to mention the current state of the channel. If you think things are going to get rosy in Santa Clara any time soon ya'll are living in a dream world.....those intel leap calls are going to get a lot cheaper in the coming months as will the AMD puts.
what about new strain technology? Perhaps this is helping AMD run DC turions to 1.8ghz at 1.07V??? If this is correct, doesn't this mean AMD has been able to add an additional core while consuming significantly less power at the same clock speed? How might this strain technology affect perfomance/watt of opteron chips when coupled with DDR2-800, pacifica etc.....? I wonder if Intel has factored this into their model?
Keith, you work for an OEM IIRC, do you have a sense of what the cost savings per system could/would be using a Turion Vs Pentium M?
thats funny, I was just working out a few numbers on the mobile section. if you adjust results for 13 weeks, mobile sales were down sequentially from the 3rd quarter
3800/14*13=3528.6......they did 3.6 billion in the 3rd quarter
If you adjust the revenue and operating earnings just reported for a 13 week Vs 13 week comparison (i just divided the results by 14 and multiplied by 13) you are looking at pretty unimpressive results. less than 5% top line growth YoY and operating earnings were down to 97.xx% of last years results. Hardly a compelling reason to own their stock.
Georgia Tech Adds IBM Supercomputer for Drug Development Research
Special To LTW
ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s brand-new Center for the Study of Systems Biology, which recently hired a widely respected lead scientist and a team of researchers, is also adding one of the world’s fastest supercomputers to its arsenal.
The Center is using $8.5 million in grants to fund the supercomputer cluster from IBM. It will be used for new drug research, including possible treatments for cancer.
Georgia Tech recently launched the Center and hired Jeffrey Skolnick to lead it. His title is Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Computational Systems Biology. Skolnick, PhD, a systems biologist, served previously as director of the Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics at SUNY-Buffalo. Nineteen researchers and scientists who worked with Skolnick were also hired.
"By using IBM technology for our research, we can significantly shorten the time to market for new drugs," Skolnick said in a statement. "Systems biology integrates mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology with advanced, high performance computing and engineering. Bioinformatics and systems biology allow us to utilize the vast information growing out of the sequencing of the human genome, enabling drug developers to reduce the number of compounds they must screen by a factor of 10."
The supercomputer is built around IBM BladeCenter systems. It is a cluster built around 1,000 nodes powered by AMD Opteron dual-core processors and is capable of performing more than 8.5 trillion calculations per second. That capacity would make the supercomputer the 41st fastest in the world, based on rankings from The Top 500 Supercomputer web site.
Dr. Skolnick

"Only the most technologically savvy universities are able to compete in the field of drug discovery and bioinformatics," said Mike Cassidy, president and CEO of the Georgia Research Alliance. "Georgia Tech's focus on top-of-the-line technology and research facilities and the attraction of Dr. Jeff Skolnick and other world-class scholars will raise its presence in this competitive market and attract some of the nation's brightest students to join our research team to advance medicines that will improve the well-being of people everywhere."
BellSouth will provide hosting services for the supercomputer.
The cluster will run on Red Hat Linux 4 and Scientific Linux.
Skolnick was hired in December.
“Computational systems biology is a foundation for the next revolution in biomedicine,” said Georgia Tech Provost Jean-Lou Chameau at that time. “Dr. Skolnick’s work is a perfect fit with the outstanding research already being conducted in nanotechnology and bioengineering here at Georgia Tech. The addition of Dr. Skolnick and his team of researchers will help position Georgia Tech and the state as leaders in this important field.”

ThinkEquity is downgrading INTC to Accumulate from Buy and lowering their tgt to $26 from $27 saying Intel's Dempsey processor appears to have slipped from March to May 2006 (6- 8 weeks). Firm says Dempsey is the first true dual-core processor expected from Intel, first intended for the server space. They expected that the majority of server revs from Intel in 2006 would have come from this platform (the Bensley platform, using the Dempsey processor). The firm says although Intel expects to be shipping this for revenue in 1Q06, it should be minimal (according to their guidance). The firm says a delay in Dempsey could delay much of Intel's server product line. They say this delay also puts Advanced Micro (AMD) in position to take even more share in the high- margin server space. The firm says Intel's Paxville dual core has been somewhat of a disappointment, and many customers have been waiting to buy the Dempsey and delay could drive more of them to AMD.
insider selling?
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/it?s=AAPL
The analysts have far more (paid for) information from which they operate
Didn't seem to help Joe or Ben though, did it?
not possible
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
you are starting to reek of sour grapes.
Re: I think you are underestimating the demand for Opteron, its competitiveness and the differentiator it will continue to provide even when Dempsey, Woodcrest and Tulsa become available.
$/performance and performance/watt are pretty big differentiators IMO.
LOL
Dirk held the same positions of the CPU division prior to spinning off Spansion. Perhaps you would not be questioning Mr Meyer's credibility if he shared Mr O's fondness of soft cuddly bunny suits?
Thanks for the commentary Keith, it is always appreciated - by me anyway.....
My situation is a little different, as my entire investment is in leaps due to expire in 2007. I will most likely look to sell into a strong q3 earnings run and maybe move my position out to 2008 if things still look good.
The market is forward looking, and will hopefully factor in AMD´s potential soon enough.
care to throw out any numbers?
I think if AMD continues to execute and they post another set of jaw dropping numbers like we saw on Wednesday, the market is going to take this thing on a long run. Mr. Market, irrespective of lessons learned in 2000, still seems to really love a good tech growth story. AMD could well be that story in 2006 IMO.
so does that make you think harder about getting out mid year?
i thought this was interesting. from yahoo poster bjterry62:
Since I hang around at Newegg.com every day looking for the latest deals, I thought I'd check out some stats on Dual Core processor sales (via reviews). They go as follows:
AMD

X2 4200 - $400 - 106 reviews
X2 4400 - $497 - 214 reviews
X2 4600 - $630 - 14 reviews
X2 4800 - $787 - 87 reviews
Total 695 reviews
Intel
PD 820 - $243-$265 - 71 reviews
PD 830 - $325-$388 - 77 reviews
PD 840 - $548 - 17 reviews
PD 920 - $268 - 4 reviews
PD 930 - $355 - 2 reviews
PD 940 - $538 - 0 reviews
PD 950 - $738 - 0 reviews
PD 955 - $1298 - 0 reviews (This is EE model and is not in stock)
Total - 171 reviews
Now, all the Geeks that buy at Newegg LOVE to talk about their purchases and this is a pretty good indicator of how many of these processors have been purchased. Sales of AMD DC Procs outweigh intel 4 to 1 even though they cost MORE.

There are 194044 in the money options contracts expiring today; when the selling pressure is over, things will get very interesting IMO.
I was comparing the operating results of both companies....you know apples to apples......
I've lost eh Paul? what is your return on INTC?
they didn't on an operating basis paul. If you don't understand the difference between reported GAAP numbers and actual operating results.......
A chipset manufacturer may give Advanced Micro Devices an unexpected boost in its bid to claim a larger share of the corporate market.
Nvidia, a Santa Clara, Calif., manufacturer of graphics processors and chipsets, has been quietly rolling out a certification program intended to shore up the quality of third-party desktop and notebook motherboards that use its chipsets coupled with processors from AMD. Improving quality in third-party motherboards has been a hot button for systems builders.

Like I said, Hector already set high expectations within the investment community. He didn't "underpromise" anything
AMD guided seasonal growth for Q3 - they delivered 24% (3 X SEASONAL GROWTH)
AMD guided 8-13% growth in Q4 and delivered 35%.
Performance for the new Intel powered Mac computers is far less than the company promised during last week's unveiling.
http://www.computing.co.uk/vnunet/news/2148912/intel-mac-fail-speed-test
from the morgan stanley report:
Based on our new 2006 estimates, AMD is trading at
21x earnings and 2.8x revenues. In comparison, the
average stock in our universe is trading at 28x earnings
and 4.3x revenues. The average company in our
universe had a 17.6% operating margin in the third
quarter, and they are expected to have an average
operating margin of 20% in 2006. Excluding Spansion,
AMD¡¯s operating margin was 20% in the fourth quarter.
Overall, AMD¡¯s processor business delivered a 41%
incremental operating margin during the quarter.
We strongly believe that valuations and margins are
highly correlated for semiconductor stocks, and
management¡¯s long-term operating margin target for
AMD is 18%-24%. At current prices, a company with
an operating margin in that range would command a
P/S multiple of 5-6x based on the most recent quarterly
revenues annualized, and if we apply these multiples to
AMD¡¯s fourth-quarter results, it would imply a stockprice
target of $55-$70.
respect goes out to Prudential for their calls[/I]
Prudential is not in the "investment banking business" so their calls are probably significantly less biased than other houses. Respect to the folks at Caris Co as well; except they also had/have a buy recommendation on INTC.
Really? Q just reported saw an increase in EPS of more than 600% over last year.
Next quarter when amd reports $.50 (feel free to BM this post)
it will be compared against a loss of $.02 in the year prior.
Q2 my estimate is for $.50 vs .02 in the year prior
Q3 maybe $.70 Vs .18
Q4 next year could well come in around a dollar with Vista acting as a big catalyst for both AMD and Intel.
Hey, did you see the 4 massive (9 million each) intel blocks go through near the close? Somebody sure wanted out in a big way.....wonder whom?
Advanced Micro AMD Soleil Hold » Buy
Advanced Micro AMD Punk, Ziegel & Co Buy $40 » $48
Advanced Micro AMD Prudential Overweight $40 » $55
Advanced Micro AMD Morgan Stanley Overweight $40 » $50
Perhaps when/if AMD hits $1.5 billion in CPU revenue next Q, 1 or 2 of those "analysts" will come around.....not that we need them; given time, the market is more than capable of connecting the dots. Fantastic results yesterday, even you seemed excited ;)

Morgan Stanley ups price target to $50
Prudential ups price target to $55

LONDON — Microprocessor company Advanced Micro Device Inc. has signed a technology license for "floating-body" silicon-on-insulator (SOI) memory developed by startup company Innovative Silicon Inc. AMD (Sunnyvale, Calif.) said it is interested in the Z-RAM (zero capacitor) technology for use in its microprocessors.

the market will give a multiple of 30-40 x estimated 2006 earnings...this stock will be $50 before they report again.
debt converted to equity
as for cash increase, you have to add back depreciation and other non cash expenses
So you are starting to get it then..........I wonder which analyst will be first to raise 2006 earnings estimates to $2.xx? Bet Q1 revenue will be up from Q4....ya think
$15? did they say something about a 6 for 1 split?
actually Niceguy looks pretty smart compared to Ben Lynch right now. I wonder if DB clients are enjoying the decision to buy intel and sell AMD?
right....and expire worth nothing.
