Her replacement if any will be interesting.

I've mentioned before that there seem to be ongoing messaging differences between Intel and Micron that make me believe that things aren't all rosy with either the technologies or the relationship or both.
I suspect we'll find out by the end of the year.
gb
MU posted a loss today. I wonder where the fabulous new memory tech is from MU/INTC. 3Dnand and 3DXP seem to be MIA.
gb
NewEgg RMA replacement NUC6i5SYK came and after installing the same memory and M.2 drive it booted Win10. I recovered some data from the drive and turned it off for now. I need some time to figure out if Win10 will consider it properly activated and if not call MSFT to square it.
Then I'll look at Event Manager to see if anything was logged prior to it going south.
Intel is still working on determining the cause of this type of failure. No resolution yet. I'm going to keep it off until I see something that looks like a solution.
Too old and busy to play beta site.
gb
Did you miss the part where Chipguy mentioned he did actual designs with TSMC processes?
I think he speaks with far more authority than most on this board in that regard.
gb
It's so nice to have someone like you who knows far more than the 100K employees of Intel on any subject.
I hear Bill Holt's position is open. Did you apply?
gb
TCE: you seem to think the only use for a modem is in a phone.
gb
I wonder when Larry's ego will allow them to put a bullet in this aging horse?
gb
Not that I can find mention of. This all blackout symptom seems exclusive to Skylake NUC rather than NUCs in general. Don't know if other Skylake platforms are affected.
This is the NUC6i5SYK.
It was working well for the application until this.
gb
Sad to report that my Skylake NUC died yesterday as it lost the ability to output video after only 3 weeks of 24/7 use. RMA underway. Some googling shows it seems I'm not alone.
No idea if this is a BIOS correctable issue or a hardware death.
No way to diagnose since there is not even POST video output.
ugh

From my perspective it seems that Intel has conceded that traditional client volume will continue to decline and has abandoned all hope of a low margin cellphone win.
Instead they are pursuing IoT as the new "client" growth engine and focusing their CPU and modem efforts there.
Of course they'll continue to create x86 client chips as it is a huge if declining volume. And it feeds the DCG business as well by amortizing the architecture development costs.
I'm skeptical...
gb (just powered up my NUC6i5SYK, loaded Win10 from a USB stick in less than 5 minutes. So far so good!)
I want to see a stream of exciting new high volume high margin products.
Lately it feels like I'm watching a magic show with lots of distraction and misdirection. Lady Gaga, WTF??
Products, not platitudes.
gb
How about the rest of my post which was the majority of it?

I don't like the use of the term "political correctness" as it is usually employed as a derogatory predicate by the user as a means to justify subsequent uncivilized behavior.
However I am very concerned that Intel seems to be struggling with a clear vision of what it wants to achieve and some proof that it is capable doing so. Although it's HR efforts are admirable they can't substitute for product execution.
Although IoT may well be a major growth area I'm dubious that it can substitute adequately for the loss of client computing. Client computing has the unique capability of keeping Intel relevant as a consumer brand. I don't see IoT devices capable of filling that role. The failing in the mobile arena seems to continue without pause and although our family has (and will continue to have) several high performance desktops the "bloom appears to have gone off that rose" permanently.
I'm reasonably confident that Intel can maintain it's position in servers but I continue to wonder about what's going on in the HPC arena where there has been a distinct lack of visibility in what's going on with Intel's offerings. I'm concerned that the Xeon Phi family has been a victim of 14nm alleged shortcomings and the future devices at 10nm may suffer as well.
HPC and Big Data Computing is seen as the "next big thing" for medicine and a whole range of product design that the Xeon Phi and it's ability to "democratize HPC" (Intel's words...) was supposed to address.
I continue to wonder about how well the Intel/Micron relationship is working. I'm starting to see the same sort of divergence there that characterized the Intel/HP relationship on Itanium and we all know how well that went. I want to see 3D NAND and 3DXpoint products soon and in volume.
In short I want to see products and substantial previews of products on a continuing basis that support a real roadmap for all of Intel's product lines. HR and Bill Holt should represent 10% or less of the column inches if products were properly foremost.
gb
I'm not sure what I'm supposed to get out of that:
1. It's really hard so no one else can do it soon?
2. It's really expensive to make so price will be high?
3. It's really hard to make so limited availability?
Was the intent of the presentation to scare everyone off including customers?
Or to demonstrate marksmanship prowess in targeting his own toes?
gb
Anyone who references Ninny as a source loses all credibility IMO.
gb
They didn't get the benefit because they DIDN'T ACTUALLY SHRINK!
They won't actually do 10nm either.
But I have 7nm working in my basement.
gb
I've got a 7nm Stinkbug working in my basement now!
gb
It's always 5 o'clock somewhere!
gb
they often are.
gb
Any news on the AVX bug recently found? Has a bios update been issued? I'm holding fire on a few Skylake purchases until this gets settled.
tnx
gb
Santa brought 3 iPhone 6s to replace our 5s models. Also a iPad Air 2. Still likely to buy a Win10 2n1 in a couple of months plus two Skylake i5 NUCs.
Once I get a look at what 3Dxpoint looks like in Xeon systems we could be in the market for a workstation as well.
gb (doing my part...)
Thanks!
gb
Still coming...
gb
Sorry for the TLA.
TAM = total available market, i.e., all things silicon. Includes analog, LDMOS power devices, accelerometers, and lots more.
SAM = served available market. Somewhat self defined by each company based on their competencies.
gb
From my perspective the foundry biz is widely distributed across a variety of things. The ones everyone seems to focus on is the phone biz and in that space Intel clearly has no intention of building ARM chips. That's a limiter.
The non-phone biz is what Intel and others call IoT and in that space again Intel has designs on selling merchant silicon in competition with potential IoT ARM customers.
Not sure what is left after IoT and phones are taken out of the SAM.

Coming soon...

Getting grumpy waiting...

that is *could not* find reference...

Professor
I read the linked article and could find reference to your bolded title.
What did I miss?
gb
I'm interested in seeing if Intel pulls any rabbits out of their hat for the combo of 3DXpoint and a desktop environment.
If they do we'd be all in for the performance at nearly any cost. Including buying a Xeon if needed.
gb
I just wish they would get the Skylake i5 NUC shipping.
gb
Every year in the spring Intel holds what they call SLRP: Strategic Long Range Plan meeting.
I'd sat in a few before retiring. Not all businesses/topics are presented each year. The reviews were pretty critical at times.
I wonder what the mobile topic sounds like if/when presented.
gb
Since the GPU parts trail this server part, I predict a significant financial redo again in 2016 as money runs tight.
gb
It seems a inconsistent that Intel is pitching 2n1 as alternative to tablets but with none I can find with LTE even as an option.
This while Intel is spending enormous amounts on their modems. They even emphasized modems as crucial to their IoT strategy.
I wonder if some of this is due to the choke hold the carriers have in the US on equipment certs.
go figure...
gb
Our grandfathered AT&T unlimited family data plan doesn't allow new devices to be added nor does it allow hotspotting. We can update the devices of course.
gb
Her use case would involve showing her artwork to prospective galleries in NYC and elsewhere. Hence not wanting to clumsily engage a bunch of hardware. iPad means just turn it on a browse. I'd want the same ability with whatever she gets if Win10.
gb
For those of you who have gone with an Intel based 2:1 instead of a iPad are there 4G modems which come with these and can be used with AT&T service?
Going shopping for daughter later this week.
Thanks
gb
I'm not sure who reads Nenni and takes him seriously. Perhaps his site is supported by ad traffic generated by outrageous claims.
I don't think I've ever read an article there that was realistic.
gb
Professor: you are aware of the billions Intel is investing in memory fabs in China?
gb
Although the 6T drive price is nice if you need that much space I think that the market served by consumer drives of that size is pretty small.
In our house 250-500G SSDs are fine for both boot and data storage and I think we are out on the 2 sigma point, meaning 250G is probably plenty for most. My daughter has 4T drives for her photo storage as she is an artist and uses them for references. She never deletes photos and now has a Nikon 810E which produces gigantic raw files.
By the time her 4T drives get crowded I expect we will be moving to SSD for even those for performance reasons even if it costs a bit more.
For cloud or enterprise I don't think 6T is a typical density due to reliability concerns. I think SSDs will take over a lot of that space due to speed, space and energy concerns. 3DXpoint will be interesting to watch as it affects that space.
