I think they're focusing on DP flops now.
gb
KNC was apparently reworked quite a bit from the original LRB.
Don't know the answers to your q.
gb
I finally got a look at the video of the ORNL guys talking about MIC (KNF, KNC). Starts at minute 46
http://insidehpc.com/2011/11/16/video-intels-knights-corner-does-1-teraflop-on-a-single-chip-at-sc11/
Several things stood out:
1. Several big codes were ported "correctly" in a single day.
2. Not just ISA but tools and programming models were in place to make this happen..
3. None of these codes will *ever* run on GPGPU.
The video was cut short. Perhaps there's another out there somewhere.
gb
I wonder who stimulated the investigation by complaining about the lack of transparency?
gb
well he did call for execution and they are in tx.
gb
yeah, but, but, but...int-el gfx suxors!!!
/sarc
can you imagine how cheap it must be to build a 32nm atom?
actually a single core sb-based celeron is more likely what will kill amd's low end next year.
can't wait to hear rr's big plan in feb.

S|A: AMD lowend roadmap in turmoil. Likewise ardent fans.
Film at 11.
gb
I think the programming model of x86 which allows easy migration to KNC along with high sustained rather than just some peak bragging number will quickly be shown to be a huge advantage and will clean up on the majority of the HPC market.
gb
The GPU true believers will never buy that. It will be interesting how deployed systems perform and how they react.
gb
That would be a good tdp but the link was confusing as to whether the tdp quoted was for KC.
gb
it will fun to see what dreamworks does with kc.
gb
I don't think they're willingly taking a risk. Their MSS is headed to zero rather briskly and if they want to stay in the game at all they need to sell their offering at aggressive prices or not at all.
They admitted "barely profitable" at their Q2 call when their share was significantly higher. They are losing money in servers now.
I don't expect their server line to recover with the current pathetic offering. Why would anyone buy something inferior when the processor price represents a smallish part of the box cost and the whole product line is at risk?
gb
He's become Up-Chuck-Something-Meaningless for quite a while now.
gb
Next milestone or presentation?
I'm not aware of any events or major presentations by Intel before the Jan CC. I presume at that point we'll hear that IB has shipped for revenue.
Of course there's CES which I think will come before Intel reports.
gb
I thought GLF had access to a bottomless pit of money. So they now need to hock the family jewels to pay the local loan shark?
Perhaps the vig is a knuckle a week...
gb
Just had a thought:
RR isn't really a semicon playa. His recent firings have resulted in all the remaining JS folk of significance being purged.
So now there's no big egos to placate in any sort of a merger. Certainly not the new kid CEO.
Is RR just window dressing while the board is executing some heretofore unthinkable "big picture" plan?
gb
I find it interesting that the analysts have not commented on the lack of info from AMD. They're either uncharacteristically patient or they've lost interest.
gb
Seems like Cray is playing Charlie Brown to AMD's Lucy in a game of HPC field goals.
gb
Well if there is some real meat in the presentation some where rather than a bunch of rah-rah BS then you can be sure some disgruntled employee will spill the beans by the weekend. Otherwise it was just pap while the rest of the "plan" is being hatched.
Continue the execution(s)!
gb
Anyone see leaked info of RR's presentation to the troops?
gb
AMD PR today:
When I first saw this I thought it was the Interlagos release. Not so...

I'm hoping the UB tech makes its way into the larger sizes as well. I know my wife would love an UB but with a 17" size. Thin, light, but easy on the eyes.
gb
Looks like AMD isn't going to make RR's Worldcast public in realtime. Nothing posted on their investor page.
I wonder what time it is and how leaky it will be?
gb
dang! missed the major major major ref!
gb
Considering how many body parts they've removed it does look like a bad remake of "Boxing Helena".
gb
hep me get these flies out ma eyes!
gb
babada beem!

I think they'd keep x86 but on whatever cores can be built on TSMC. I think they'll also give GLF a chance to fix their process but won't commit a bunch of wafers until they do. Of course without a bunch of wafers GLF will never get the process fixed. There's a coloquial term for that but it escapes me at the moment.
With a focus on low power cores they can apply them in various areas including servers that may not need all the fancy RAS and ECC stuff. The HP things would fit that bill. Of course Intel may have some say in that space as well with Atom and/or KC.
I expect AMD to exit a lot of the highend/midrange desktop and server by milking what they have and spending all their R&D on TSMC buildable product.
gb
I wonder if "the plan" was shared with a select few who would be likely to salute the new flag and the remainder were dismissed. Of course if the plan is to attack a much smaller segment of the market then the high priced talent servicing the abandoned market segments have questionable value anyway.
Likewise perhaps some of the pronouncements by some of the former lead engineers as to the wisdom of the "new plan" signaled their lack of enthusiasm for execution to it and were likewise "fired for effect."
Puts RR's Q3CC commitment to execution in a whole new Texas-style light.
The floggings will continue until the morale improves.
gb
I think the BOD set the direction and RR was chosen to execute it. Shareholders get to vote their opinion of the BOD's performance daily with their pocketbooks and annually with their proxies.
Popcorn buttered and waiting.
gb
I suspect loyal AMD enthusiasts won't be happy with what they hear tomorrow.
gb
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if AMD licensed ARM.
gb
I had the same question. I would guess that if it has a full x86-64 implementation as its base that adding a UEFI bios to it should allow it to boot linux from a flash drive. From there it's a matter of provisioning I/O.
gb
BTW when SB was launched early this year PSO said it would permeate the whole product line by the end of the year. Looks like he can be taken at his word.
A study in contrasts is left as an exercise for the student.
gb
re: sb celerons vs llano
This is only going to get worse when AMD has to start paying for wafers rather than only good die come Jan 1. I'm sure the OEMs now building holiday SKUs have already figured out what Anand just posted. It will be interesting to see what IDC says in January about the MSS comparisons.
gb
Is there a site where ARM fans hang like Amdzone?
gb
Close. But you forgot to include awsum gfx to run hashes in those servers. Completely pwns igfx.
gb
Perhaps but how will they live without cheering claims of LN2 extreme OC, towering heat sinks, strobe equipped cases and KW power supplies all to run some FPS? How to survive without the thrill of finding obscure benches to hurl at the evil empire?
Of course there will be the obligatory calls for more government intervention.
All of this of course presumes my guess of the new direction is right. Not often the case.
