SemiconEng,
I thought margins dropped?
Mysef
Historically, everything drops in Q1. I meant held, as in meeting the original forcast from Q4, despite the reported late quarter drop in Q1 Laptop sales.... Overall 2004 margins also seem to still be meeting expectations........
http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=45914&site=lightreading
Gross margin percentage in the first quarter is expected to be approximately 60 percent, plus or minus a couple of points. Intel's gross margin percentage varies primarily with revenue levels, product mix and pricing, changes in unit costs and inventory valuation, capacity utilization, and the timing of factory ramps and associated costs.
Gross margin percentage for 2004 is expected to be approximately 62 percent, plus or minus a few points, as compared to 57 percent in 2003.

Thanks, Greg (little shooter guy), helped me figure out how to do it. I tell ya, it was real tough finding a P4 emblem out there on the net that was small enough. You should have seen the first ones I tried..... ENOURMOUS!
FOLKS.... JOKE.... SORRY!
Hey, thanks for all the concerned PM's, as well as the "Oh No, Why Are You Selling" comments. Sorry..... It was a Joke.... scroll down to the bottom of the message.....
Where I grew up, "In the old days", the phrase "Psyche" was something we used as a phrase that means "The last sentence I just stated to you is complete B.S." My sister and I use to do it to each other frequently, as in..... Hey sis, that outfit looks "Really Good" on you....... Psyche! or "Hey brother, have you been working out? Body looks real buff....... Psyche"! Usually followed by one chasing the other around, trying to bonk each other, while the other person laughed their arse off. "Gotcha"
I'm not really selling the stock, especially the ones that due to the splits now effectively cost me ~ $0.20
Thanks for the concern though
$8.1B Revenue, $0.26 EPS vs $0.27 Est
Actually, I thought that I read elsewhere that the 0.27 estimate was "excluding" the Intergraph........ Buy off, but I can't find it now. In any case, I'm actually pleased with the report. Intel met it's lowered estimates from the mid quarter update, They would have exceeded the EPS estimate (.277) without those SOB you know who company, but more importantly, is that margins held up.
I remember speculating that if the reported falloff of laptop sales reported late in Q1 were true, and I said IF.... margins still held up, then that would most likely mean that ASP's held, or even increased slightly. Seems to have panned out as a good call.
btw, I'm selling all my INTC Stock

IBM sells Power PC line for $277 million
AMCC picks up portfolio
Isn't the PC400 line one of IBM's lower level (value) PowerPC Chips? Headline not withstanding, I notice the article didn't say "ALL" PowerPC lines, it just mentions that one. In any case, AMCC getting access to the process is certainly a win for AMCC IMO.
It has released test results commissioned from Tolly that show a prototype access point, based on Engim's Wi-Fi chipset and Intel's network processor, performing at 10 to 20 times greater throughput than other APs with conventional WLAN chipsets. Theoretically, Engim claims its products could boost AP performance by up to 50 times.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/04/09/engim_boosts_wifi/
Cool, I wonder how much it would cost to buy up Engim? If the data showing such an improvement between Engim and intel products is correct, that ould certainly make Engim a better purchase then all those dot com companies intel bought. Can you say...... Centrino/2?
Did the inquirer even stick it to AMD about Integraph - I don't think so, but they were very heavy handed with intel....
No they didn't stick it AMD the same way they did intel, (Surprise...... Not). When intel was involved, there were ~ a dozen in depth articles at the Inq, on bad bad bad intel. Today, the Inq treated the AMD/Intergraph news as an "Oh, by the way".

EU AMD-Intel investigation over, almost
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15262
Waiting for Supreme Court decision
By INQUIRER staff: Friday 09 April 2004, 14:24
INTEL SAID that it was contacted by European Commission antitrust officials some months back who said they were no longer investigating antitrust allegations here.
I have a feeling the supreme court will see the right thing to do. It's a cryin shame that "whoever filed that complaint" (cough), with the EU, that it didn't bear out for them. "They" probably heard about it the same time that intel did. "Whoever they are" (cough), I wonder what they'll try next? Oh yeah......
Naw, the timing is all just "cooperation"...... ummmmmmm I mean, coincidence, right? winkwink

Re -"The Japanese raided intel's offices, and went to "Talk to" AMD and Transmeta. IMO, Co-Conspirators..... No Doubt."
Possible. Please provide your evidence.
I have provided just as much evidence as any normal intuitive person's eyes can see. As far as what AMD/Transmeta says now, IMO, AMD and Transmeta are Liars. The main reason the Japanese went to AMD and Transmeta's offices was to collect the sales data from the people making the complaints, so that they could compare it against the accused intel's sales data. That is a standard investigative procedure, that's repeated all over the planet, every day. They didn't go to Motorola, or any of those other companies because none of them are complaining. It doesn't take a genius to put that 2 and 2 together, unless of course, a person really Doesn't Want to see a 4.
And btw, as I understand it, AMD and Transmeta were already "cooperating"..... Since year 2000.
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-11-502779.html?legacy=zdnn
"The Enemy of my Enemy, is my friend". I couldn't have said it better myself.
Semi
You claimed it was obvious this was initiated by AMD......
And the only piece still missing, is for AMD and Transmeta to wait a few days or weeks, to announce their "New Technology Sharing Alliance" for "Ultra Low Power Opteron Laptops", and other products. Surprise....... Not!
Sure seems to me that Transmeta has incentive to complain.... with them getting their arse kicked in market share and all...... desperation breeds strange bedfellows.
http://investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=2810646
Transmeta's products once proved popular in Japan, with high-tech firms including Sony Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., NEC, Hitachi Ltd. and Casio Computer Co. introducing the company's Crusoe processor in their notebook PCs when the energy-saving processor was launched in 2000.
But when Transmeta launched the Efficeon processor in 2003, only Sharp Corp. moved to adopt it.
The FTC is expected to investigate why the number of Japanese companies using Transmeta products has fallen sharply.
And don't Even try to convince me that AMD would even hesitate for a second to complain. They didn't before. The evidence seems pretty obvious to me.
Semi
You claimed it was obvious this was initiated by AMD. And I simply said it was not obvious and now you respond with this swampland stuff?
ok you win.
Regards,
Smallpops
The Japanese raided intel's offices, and went to "Talk to" AMD and Transmeta. IMO, Co-Conspirators..... No Doubt. They didn't go "talk to" Motorola, or Fujitsu, or any of the dozens of other semiconductor companies in Tokyo. No, they went to the ones that complained, just those 2. It's funny how the press was on scene too. How do you suppose they knew ahead of time? Osmosis?
Snakes slide around in the grass at night, and IMO, if a person removes their AMD rose colored glasses, they will be able to see better in the darkness. Also, it's not a question of "who wins", speculation is encouraged on this thread, and you are of course entitled to believe whatever you want, just as others are. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
Semi
Don't really know how "obvious" it is. In another story provided
by Kate:
Sure....... Sure...... And I got some swampland in florida I'll let ya have, cheap.
You don't even sound like you believe you ("don't really know"). Why continue to deny the obvious?
Semi
There is very little doubt in my mind that AMD is behind this.
You don't need to have any doubt...... Kate's story provides obvious evidence of AMD's slimey back door attempts to slander intel.
Rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD ) likely prompted the inquiry. Its executives have complained for years that Intel strong-arms PC makers into using its microprocessors over other offerings. AMD spokesman Morris Denton declined on Thursday to comment on whether the chipmaker has complained to Japanese authorities. But he added: "We support and believe in an environment of open and free competition. Intel is clearly a monopoly, and the company has been investigated continuously for violating antritrust laws in the U.S. and Europe."
If you're innocent, you say "I Didn't Do It". If you're guilty, you "Decline To Comment", and then try to suggest that investigations which found nothing, indicate guilt. What he neglects to mention, is that the US investigation found nothing, and intel is saying the EU told them they're done, which they certainly also told AMD. So it is very clear that now AMD has slithered off to Asia, just like the snake they are. Expect China to be next on AMD's travel itinerary, because I guess there's only dozens of sucker countries left. Fanboys must be so proud of AMD. Well...... at least I'm sure that I know one who is.
Semi
"But when you see folks declare victory before AMD even sells a seriously appreciable number of Opterons, much less a number that's even a sizable fraction of Xeon sales, recognize such talk for what it is: propaganda from the big-time biased.
"And until or the sales figures catch up with the sales pitch, claims of victory should be believed about as much as those made by pro wrestlers before a match."
Hummmmm..... Sounds to me like he like he reads the AMD Thread..... I mean the one on Silicon Investor..... of course.
Semi
I guess talking about the journalistic integrity of the Inquirer is too "off-topic" for this thread, no? <G>
Tenchu
Oh....... No no no no no, you've got it wrong. I hear it's fine...... As long as you don't try to make any comparisons of the Inq specifically, by referencing mainstream journalism integrity. That, I hear is an OT no no.
[edit] Actually, I just realized something...... I guess I CAN understand why mainstream journalism integrity is OT as applied to the Inq. <vbg>
Semi
Like I said a couple of days ago... until 64-bit Windows is out... I'm not overly concerned about Nocona delays... Yes, they're problematic, but a CPU without software infrastructure is like a V12 Ferrari with only 8 spark plugs...
I can even believe that what MS could have said to themselves, was something like...... "Well, we were going to release this software sooner, just to get those Jerry and Hector guys to Shut The H*ll Up, but since intel fed us the new release date of Nacona, there's no need to rush, we don't HAVE to release it sooner. Let's keep working on those Beta Bugs. Conspiracy? No, Smart Business Decision by MS..... IF that's even what happened. Isn't speculation interesting? And Yes, it probably hurts AMD....... Too Bad (sob).
Semi
IT LOOKS LIKE Microsoft won't be in a position to launch a 64-bit Edition of Windows for anybody's 64-bit chippery any time before Q4, or what we call winter up here in the northern hemisphere.
Now, we will no doubt hear from the fanboys, that this is some sort of "conspiracy" to harm AMD, generated by intel, and their secret black shirt squad, to "force" microsoft (cough), to delay the release of software, that MS could otherwise ship for revenue.
Wadda ya wanna bet? I'll cover them all.

intel lists a hot spot locator on it's web site, so people can refernce where they can link wirelessly, and sometimes for free. This was most likely an examination of that data, but I agree, it could have been worded better, since it seems to be generating some confusion.
Hot Spot Locator:

That's really kind of sad since Intel has a huge presence in both the bay area and the Portland metro...
Sure, wireless is going to take awhile to catch on. I recall it took some time to get everyone on board with cell phones. But when it did finally catch on....... Besides, intel can't buy the hot spots themselves, and anyway, we certainly don't want any accusations of anybody trying to buy their way into the market, do we?
Semi
This isn't the place for critiques of journalism as a whole. We were discussing strong speculation of Nocona slipping a quarter, Itanium 667 9GB slipping into Q1 05, and Tejas having 'hideous' power consumption. Those topics should be of interest to Intel investors.
Doug
Since the Inq reports primarily on the High Tech sector, and features intel prominently in it's daily "stories", I believe that a discussion of it's journalistic integrity, or lack thereof, as compared to mainstream journalism, is of interest to intel investors, and therefore on topic.

Not necessarily... Intel's level of validation on any new processor is impressive. Evaluation machines are probably already out there with people working on them..............
Internal contradiction in your post... if developers don't have machines, c't couldn't know anything about Nocona performance... good, bad, or ugly... so you've essentially torpedoed your own argument...........
So, it sounds like you're saying that probably the engineering evaluation machines, were bult with engineering evaluation nacona samples. There you go again, spewing that "logic thing". You'll get nowhere with the AMD fan boys with that...... LOL!

Intel CEO talks with Taiwanese government officials, business leaders on technological development
http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Article3.asp?datePublish=2004/04/05&pages=PR&seq=202
While in Beijing, Craig will discuss with Chinese officials about China’s plan to implement its proprietary encryption technology, dubbed Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI), on June 1. Intel has said that it won’t comply with WAPI standards and won’t sell Centrino-based products to China after June 1.
With the US Government throwing a WTO left hook at Chinese Chip Tariffs, and Craig directly delivering a right on wireless, I hope the Chinese wake up and realize what's about to hit them. Btw, I have a feeling that no other tech companies will be complaining about "intel muscle" this time, eh?
Semi
So what is Intel's fall-back position here or is there one? Is Intel going to let the complaint run its full course with the USTR/WTO?

Maybe neither. It's possible that intel won't care if the complaint gets filed, or if the decision from WTO is in the US's favor at all.
