Mobile barcodes used to advertise 3G services, with 3GVision

Thailand has been having serious teething problems when it comes to introducing 3G services to the country. But as legal issues are put behind it, mobile operators in the country are involved in bringing 3G services to market - and they needs to promote it. Enter 3GVision and the i-nigma mobile barcode reader, which is being used for the promotion in Thailand.
Who’s involved?
3GVision is one of the big players in the mobile barcode market, especially in Japan. It hasn’t had as much success abroad, with competitors like NeoMedia and Scanbuy also in the market in the EU and USA, but it’s still a significant player. The i-nigma application, like other mobile barcode readers, can be downloaded to your phone to turn your camera into a scanner. i-nigma surpassed 120 million users in the middle of last year, and the number has increased since.
Then you’ve got TrueMove - one of the mobile operators that is pushing 3G in Thailand. TrueMove is creating a trial service to show people what 3G is capable, and it wants 2D barcodes to be an integral part of that. Lifestyle is very important to the TrueMove campaign (indeed, it’s campaign concept is “Fun Living Lifestyle”) and it wants its subscribers to be able to use barcodes for shopping, marketing and e-tickets.
The 3GVision CEO, Mendy Mendelsohn said “Based on our years of experience in Japan, where QR codes have become a natural extension of the mobile phone, we now look forward to helping TrueMove make the most of 2D codes, reinforcing their positioning as Thailand’s most innovative service provider.”

We wanted to think globally from the beginning and to offer the option for barcodes to seamless span all geographic areas, whether that is Europe, all of the Americas, or the entire world. So, to directly answer your question, yes, the important components of global barcode access and full interoperability are ready to go.
One piece that was missing until recently was agreement on 2D barcode intellectual property ownership and licensing issues; we worked to overcome that hurdle through our partnership with NeoMedia, who has important patents in this area. This partnership agreement and the demonstration of technical interoperability that Neustar and its global campaign management partners achieved earlier in the year, provides a clear field to move ahead with an open solution that allows all players to join the ecosystem and access the same infrastructure
That move tells me that TP will eat his predictive words of pps gloom and doom. I think it made his prediction correct. It's the one thing he got right this month. To bad the .02 was not 2.00 then "chartoes" (I don't recall the correct spelling of her name) would have been correct with her charting.
Nice find 2010 will be good for neom. Enjoy the sking it's all down hill from here.
Is holiday gift shopping stretching your budget thin?
Technology expert Omar Wasow shares five ways to gain control of your finances this season with cell phone applications and online banking.
1. Compare Prices On the Go
RedLaser is a barcode scanner application for the iPhone that allows you to scan an item and instantly have access to online prices and information. It's great for comparison shopping, reading product reviews, or simply making note of a specific product for later.
2. Find Deals Near You
Yowza!! is a free iPhone app that finds deals in your geographic area -- within 1 to 15 miles of you. When you arrive at the store, present the coupon on your device and let them scan the barcode. No clipping and stashing coupons necessary!
3. Bank From Your Pocket
While you're standing in line and running from store to store, keep your bank branch in your pocket with a mobile banking service, such as Bank of America's Mobile Banking app. You can check your balances and transactions, pay bills, transfer money, and locate ATMs. This app is easy to use and ensures your financial life fits seamlessly into your holiday rush. It also gives you immediate access to your finances throughout the day.
4. Pay Bills Online
Eliminating unwanted paperwork is a great start to getting organized. Using a service such as Bank of America's Online Banking gives you access to bill pay and e-bills, allowing you to go paperless!
With e-bills, you don't have to wait for the bill to come to you -- instead, you can pay all your bills online at the same time. By allowing you to set a schedule to pay any amount, bill pay can help you to avoid needless paperwork and simplify your life by ensuring your bills will be paid on time.
5. Store Documents Digitally
The DocScanner app enables the camera from your iPhone or Symbian smartphone to act like a scanner so that important documents, such as receipts, can be stored in your phone and transported to your computer. It's a handy way to eliminate clutter from holiday receipts.

GS1 MobileCom claims extended packaging is real
Yesterday, December 06, 2009, 6:16:52 PM | Tony Dennis
Rating: Defining how cameraphones interact with retail packaging
The wheels are slowly grinding towards standards for the use of mobile-friendly barcodes by retailers on a global basis. That’s what the GS1 MobileCom working group is hoping to achieve, thanks to a recent meeting in Paris. The claim is that ‘Extended Packaging’ is now a reality.
Vanderlei Roque dos Santos, who is co-chair of the GS1 MobileCom working group and represents Nestlé, claimed, “Extended Packaging is a reality for consumers. It’s our job to make sure the services we offer reach the widest audience. That’s only possible with the right standards in place.”
Extended Packaging defines how consumers can get product information on their mobile phones by scanning a barcode on product packaging, for example. Members of the MobileCom group have been sharing information about extended packaging trials and plans to launch schemes in 2010
Carrefour is preparing a service that will launch in January 2010 while Nokia has run successful pilots involving wine, jeans and DVDs. Significantly, Franprix (part of the Casino supermarket group) has launched a live mobile application giving consumers access to information to help them choose wine.
The application was launched during France’s busy September Wine Festival season. Encouragingly, over two thirds of consumers interviewed found the service useful.
One conclusion from the meeting was that the GS1 MobileCom working group is striving to define the means of allowing trusted information to be available in an open format for extended packaging.
The group is hoping to publish a White Paper that provides recommendations on how retail stores can interact with mobile phones this month [December 2009].
In addition, the group defined the scope of a project on global standards for mobile coupons.

Thanks Poptech for the inside dealings.
Do YA disclose when they are dumping shares? If not, shouldnt they since they are practically insiders?? Good question PVC. I would think some kind of forum should be filed at the sec. when YA sells. They do own over 50% .
Those early morning shares came from someone, my opinion it was not YA. But you are right day traders sold off at the end. Easy to spot them their first post goes like this. Hey just got in. Does anybody know what the float is? What are 2d barcodes? This will be at .05 at the end of the day. Why is it going down? Well maybe its pr Tuesday. Us long know the routine. Same thing next week. You can set your watch to it.
It's not YA who sold 136,000,000 There are a lot of flippers on this board I use to flip this stock myself. If their is no change in control by Dec. 10th I well start flipping it again. YA didn,t sell much last reported quarter.
Look who microsoft is a customer of. http://www.beetagg.com/customers/default.aspx
In the beginning yes. But at the end of 2010 it would be best for this stock. I hope it's before the end of the year. If neom is to get financing it needs to be done.
I pray neom does a 100 to 1 reverse split. And hope it's soon. This stock gets flipped to often.
I asked the same ? earlier got no response. I hope their is a 8k tonight that gives details.
Does neom have to pay to have their reader pre-installed?
Will we have another conference call this year? Will YA Global and IM Sign a new contract this week, or next? What will the terms be, how many more years? Or will IM move on? Will we be sold before Dec. 10th? Will we get new financing? What happend in Paris last week? What about the EU patents? Will we see fourm 4's filed at the SEC before the end of the year? We should see prs weekly again. JMO

ryan2044 I am glad you changed your mind. Dec. 10th is too close to be flipping. If you have other funds laying around and it goes to .012 then buy with that money and sell those shares on the next bump. You should make a 20 to 30% gain, or more. JMO

Bena Roberts and the black wand of breast cancer
Today, November 20, 2009, 3 hours ago | Bena Roberts
I believe in destiny. I also believe in Karma. So, after falling over, blaming drinking at University, smoking in Amsterdam and feeling a bit like Cinderella.. I think I am finally ready just to say it.
I have breast cancer.
The black wand hit me and I feel like crap …but next week I will have a few operations followed by Chemotherapy and then um… the bitch should be back in about six months!
If you are NeoMedia, Scanbuy or any major mobile barcode provider or anyone with a barcode story – I would still like to try and cover it. It might be late, but if you SMS me when the news is published on good days I intend to write. I can’t do everything and I have to focus on getting better - but where there is a will…
Meanwhile, please use my brilliant team.
Emerging mobile technologies and on-device portals
Today, November 19, 2009, 6 hours ago | Cian
At the Mobile Marketing Forum in Los Angeles this week, we took a break from pure advertising during the day to talk about new technologies and how they are moving forward in mobile. Bob Bilbruck, MD of B2Group, spoke about some of the exciting applications of QR Codes, LBS advertising and On-Device Portals.
Before his talk, Bob showed us a great presentation detailing some of the rocketing numbers in communications and particularly mobile:
Emerging mobile technologies and on-device portals from Cian Gomo on Vimeo.
He went on to mostly about convergence - particularly from On-Device Portals as they lead to better services in LBS and QR Codes.
What is an On-Device Portal (ODP)?
An ODP is like the middle ground between operator portals and applications. Like any operator portal you might access, an ODP is basically a route you can use to quickly access services and information you want. By integrating location and barcodes, an ODP should allow a user in a foreign city to use the portal search function to find a nearby restaurant, get directions and advertising, and download a mobile coupon. However, unlike an operator portal, an ODP is not hosted off-line and accessed through a web connection. Instead it is downloaded to your device (hence “on-device”) like an application, and you access on-line information through the portal.
An ODP should provide four basic functions: browsing, purchasing, using and viewing. A fifth function that is rapidly growing in the ODP space is location-based advertising. As different channels for mobile advertising, commerce and location advance and gain stability, these can be used to make ODPs a much more attractive option.
Like the MMA for advertising, there is a body that wants to promote standards in On-Device Portals. The On Device Portal Consortium comprises 300 companies in the ODP space. The Consortium was originally created to let companies in the space share information with each other. Now it attemps to gather information, and push guidelines, standard and practices.
Why should a company develop and ODP?
“I’m going to directly paraphrase Bob on this one: “It’s faster to develop, test and launch new devices on an ODP. The same applies for new applications and new network services. Search and advertisers are evolving into a marketplace mode, and this is best delivered over an ODP. Most ODPs target a wide variety of mobile operating systems, so they can be served to a wider audience - and it’s easier to monetise services when they’re being served to a large audience over an ODP.”
And finally we were served a quick run-down on Apps vs. ODPs:
Applications are still mostly OS centric
ODP in the future will not be OS centric
An ODP can host other programs (including apps), and it can be customised by the user.
What we think?
Ok, so technically this speech was just a big pitch for on-developer portals. But I hadn’t had too much exposure to them before, and it was nice to see a new model proposed that stepped outside of the “application or mobile web?” axis. Also, claiming that ODPs have an advantage over apps because they will be OS agnostic in the future isn’t a great claim - after all apps are moving towards being OS agnostic as well.

Using mobile roaming to power mobile money transactions
Today, November 19, 2009, 39 minutes ago | Cian
There was a cluster of really interesting mobile payment companies at the Under The Radar conference near San Francisco today. One of the ones that intrigued me most was Payfone. CEO Roger Desai talked us through the offering from the company - which aims to use mobile roaming technology to power worldwide mobile transactions.
One of the first big methods for allowing purchases and payments through mobile was Premium SMS. A big problem was that PSMS was never designed to be a payment method. It was slow, it was open to fraud and dropped texts meant failed transactions. The basic idea behind Payfone is that there is already an incredibly comprehensive, quick and scalable mobile money transfer system in place, and it connects telecoms operators to one another all over the world. This system is used by networks to facilitate mobile roaming. It needs to be accurate, it needs to be fast, it needs to operate across borders, and it needs to exchange currencies on the fly. Payfone asks “why can’t we extend this system, that operators use to transfer money amongst themselves, to consumers for mobile billing?”
There are some major advantages in using operator roaming channels for payment (what Payfone calls “network-intitiated mobile billing”). For consumers, it’s a one click process and only takes seconds to complete a transaction. There’s also no registration. Because you’re already on the mobile network, all they need is your phone number. The billing records are also very detailed sot that consumers can check exactly where all their money has gone. The entire roaming system is real-time, works all over the world in every currency, and doesn’t require any software or upgrades from the operators.
For merchants, it is highly resistant to fraud - not surprising, considering it’s a revenue channel designed expressly for operators! Everything is based on the device SIM, so everything is tracked by the operator and secured by the operator. It allows a cross-merchant fraud database to be compiled from the transaction records, so that repeat offenders or criminal patterns can be detected.
Payfone doesn’t want to become a “real world” payment company through this. It wants to apply it to two main areas: digital goods and mobile applications. Payfone regards itself as a “payment processor” - it doesn’t want to edge any existing companies out. This service would be licenses to existing companies as a more efficient system to process mobile billing payments.
So far Payfone has been getting the permissions necessary to launch the service and doing testing. They’re now starting to do merchant acquisition, and claim to have 400,000 merchants on board already.
Judge question: How does this work via roaming?
In order to enable roaming to exist, the operators needed to create a common interface that they could all access. And they did create it. And unlike PSMS, this channel WAS designed to handle content and complex data - it’s just never used that way!
Judge question: where do you make your money here?
Payfone will take a small cut from each and every transaction - but much smaller then credit card transactions.

We believe mobile world is not complete without 2D codes. While new emerging technologies - e.g. NFC - are coming, 2D codes remain cheapest and widely available means to create bridges between physical world and information.

I have (9) 2d barcode readers on my Iphone. Today thier was an update for one of the readers 2D Sense. If you have an Iphone please down load the reader. When I click on it this screen appears and this is the content of the page.... This section is used to collect all kind of codes you've scanned as well as coupons you would like to redeem or tickets that you've purchased. With coupons for example, you could simply use 2D Sense to store and redeem them from your local supermarket, department store loyalty club or to earn some free rewards. Having coupons available when and where you need them most is just the beginning, the possibilities are truly endless. Tickets for your upcoming concert or airline tickets will be stored in this section as well. Keep checking this section as we'll be extending our coupon and ticketing offerings via partners in the upcoming month...... I sure neomedia is involved.
Thanks Arpvrp. Do you think this was corrected because hangdog was niping at Iaim's ankles? Or could a third party accounting firm have caught it while they where looking at Neomedia's books for a loan or buyout?
