Report: DHS has 'significant deficiency' in info security

The Homeland Security Department's inspector general has completed an information security audit of the agency, which shows DHS officials are still struggling with internal cybersecurity issues.
The report, released Oct. 27, highlights areas in which DHS officials have improved the department's information security practices and policies. But the overall tone of the report is negative. "We recommend that DHS continue to consider its information systems security program a significant deficiency for" fiscal 2004, the IG auditors state in the report's summary.
The IG conducted the information security audit between April and September 2004 according to guidelines set by Office of Management and Budget officials. OMB developed the guidelines to help federal agencies comply with the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002.
The report cited the chief information officer's lack of authority to manage DHS' departmentwide information technology programs and spending as a significant factor in the department's struggle to secure its information systems. It stated that the absence of a formal reporting relationship between the CIO and the program organizations within the department continues to undermine DHS' information security program.
Among the problems cited in the report, the inspector general found 12 systems had been accredited even though key documentation did not meet the requirements for accreditation.
On a positive note, the IG commended DHS officials for developing departmentwide security configurations policies and procedures for Microsoft Corp. Windows 2000 and Sun Microsystems Inc. Solaris systems. But the report also noted that no DHS organization had completed configuration requirements for all of its systems.
Steven Cooper, DHS' CIO, was more positive in his written response to the report. After stating that he generally concurred with the IG's findings, Cooper wrote that DHS officials have begun a comprehensive inventory of general support systems and major applications and will review data captured in the agency's automated FISMA data collection and reporting system, Trusted Agent FISMA.
The IG's audit revealed problems with verifying the data in the automated system. For example, Trusted Agent FISMA does not identify applications and systems that are due for recertification and acc

OT:Hydrogen: The next fuel for laptops?
By Therese Poletti
Mercury News
A small New Jersey company is working on a hydrogen-fueled battery that it hopes will eventually provide eight hours of power for laptop computers.
At Intel's Developer Forum in San Francisco on Tuesday, Millennium Cell demonstrated an IBM ThinkPad running on a prototype of the battery. Most notebook computers today can run for three or four hours on a fully charged battery. So far, Millennium Cell's runs for only three hours, but the goal is to increase that performance to eight hours.
Many companies are looking for ways to boost the longevity of laptop batteries, including a slew of start-ups that Intel has invested in.

Mac OS X on Intel/AMD
Roni ..... Do you think that OS X for x86 would cannabilize Apple Power PC system sales ?
Do you think Jobs would team up with any one existing PC OEM manufacturer or would they launch it as a retail package ?
I would lean towards teaming up with a company like Sony or HP.
If they went with a retail package they could make a serious dent in the WinTel monopoly but trying to get any Operating System to run on multiple PC hardware configurations is difficult.
Driver support issues alone could prove to be a support nightmare.

Roni I'm not looking beyond a year because I never rule out Microsoft.
IMHO, Windows Longhorn could reverse this switching trend if Microsoft can get their act together and deliver a solid operating system that deals with their security issues.
To be honest I don't think MSFT will get Longhorn out until late 2006 or early 2007 and will come up short on features that IT wonks like myself are expecting.
In the meantime AAPL has the momentum to make major inroads before Longhorn arrives.

AppleCider I cannot talk intelligently
about trading Options. I would say a pullback in AAPL's price is very likely though.
BR, Altaire4 .... Go AAPL .... Go Steve Jobs !!!!
Dill, I've shorted this stock
at least three times last year and made some decent profit. Had I followed my instinct and stayed long I would be holding on to a significantly larger profit.
I shorted this stock last year because they had not released a low-cost system like the Mac Mini and I lacked the foresight of understanding the ramifications of the iTunes/iPod strategy. With Apple well positioned to sell to the masses of disgruntled windows users who are sick of all the bugs and malware I have no intention of missing the boat on AAPL again.
Br, Altaire4
Short this stock at your own peril !!!
IMHO, I think a long term hold is warranted. A 2 for 1 split with significant upside in both iPod and Mac systems should keep this bullish trend for at least another year. Factor in some undisclosed deal with Sony and Apple in the offing and Apple could see even more growth.
BR, Altaire4
Lang the issues with the G5's is not hardware
.... but software and driver development. This is a normal progression in which software development lags behind hardware improvements. A year or Two from now people will be thrilled by the performance of the current G5 models.
Br, Altaire4
Win any new technology has it draw backs.
The intel P4 performance when it was first introduced was slower than a P3 until the clock speed of the P4 surpassed the 1 GHZ mark.
An clock speed its not everything; Intel's best processor right now is a Xeon running under 2 GHZ.
IMHO, 10.4 Tiger and optimized 64 bit applications will change the whole landscape once again in the near future an those who purchased the G5's will get their money's worth.
In the meantime a bargain G4 like the Mac Mini with decent upgrades will provide enough CPU power for the average user. That sounds like a Win Win proposition to me.
BR, Altaire4
WLD should back-up his assertions.
.... about IBM's G5 CPU plans for Apple with a URL.
IMHO, The only purpose in creating FUD without anything to back your assertions up is to create uncertainty about a product or service.
Does WLD have a stake in AAPL or does he post here for his own amusement ?
iHub has a very nice MSFT board with some wonderful playmates that hang out from a previous investment board I won't mention. I bet they would appreciate his keen insight on IBM's plans for Microsoft.
BR, Altaire4
G4 vs G5
While you all bicker over the G5 PowerPC chip FUD your all missing the fact that Apple is selling more G4 systems at this time than G5's. Why, because the G4 outperforms the G5 architecture in many basic operations.
Macintouch has an excellent comparison which indicates that a G4 eMac outperforms the new G5 iMac when it comes to basic hard disk operations. AMac Mini with a 60 GB Hitachi hard disk upgrade equals the G5 iMac in basic disk operations.
http://www.macintouch.com/perfpack/comparison.html#filedup
Now if Freescale releases a low power dual core G4 it would change the whole equation once again. Steve Jobs understands that its not wise to rely on any one vendor for CPU chips.
Apple's software prowess will continue to drive its iPod and Mac market share. IMHO, AAPL is a long term hold.
Br, Altaire4
Win, do I sense a bullish take on AAPL from your statement ?
OT: Cover Hype
IMHO, Magazine covers and feature articles deliver a great amount of buzz for a company, personality or poltical viewpoint but you have to look beyond the hype.
Never invest in equities based on Buzz you could lose your Shirt, Tie ... heck your whole wardrobe !!!
Example: GDubbya as Time's Man of the Year ?
checkout his recent approval rating.
I rest my case !!!
Lang, Why do you blame Jobs for what IBM can or cannot deliver ?
Apple's engineering and marketing prowess is a direct result of Steve Jobs leadership. Jobs is also the first one to point to Apples hardware and software engineers for their excellent work which has resulted in Apple's recent success.
A recent Fortune article bears this out. He even admits that he almost missed the boat on the downloadable music business.
IMHO, Jobs best asset is his understanding of team building and setting high standards; You don't have wildly successful products like iPod/iTunes without everyone at Apple working hard to make it a success.
In contrast, Microsoft's best trick is imitation .... sort of like the way Monkey's Ape humans.
Steve Monkey Boy Ballmer needs to go !!!
Timely Shootout Updates
Hey Blue everyone loves a winner and all the great press Apple has had lately may be helping to spike the traffic.
I know that I post your updates to the Mac OS X list I maintain.
Thanks for your timely Shootout updates I can point to at least six switchers at my work over the last year .... thanks to your site !!!
IMHO, If one of those switchers saves hours of wasted time fixing windows systems then your efforts are a great public service.
Thanks Again,

iPod Shuffle Review
Just got my 1 GB iPod Shuffle today and I've got to tell you all that the sound quality is incredible for such a little device !!!
I did have an initial problem in getting it to sync with the 800 mhz G4 iLamp. So I plugged it into my 400 mhz Titanium Powerbook and had to reinstall iTunes 4.7.1 but it synced right-up after that. Configuring the Shuffle to enable 512 MB's of data storage was a snap. I then plugged it back into the iLamp and after a brief software update I was able to sync it their as well. Overall a very good experience. Apple is going to sell tons of these.
Now for the sake of irony the data portion of the shuffle is loaded with troubleshooting software to fix Windows machines infected with Virrii, spyware and Malware. It will be interesting to see my customers reactions when I plug my Apple shuffle into to heart of the Windows beast.

AppleJack 1.3
AppleJack is a tool to make it easy to troubleshoot your Mac when the standard graphical tools are unavailable to you. Sometimes, for example, problems might keep the GUI from loading. The script gives you an interactive, menu-based command line environment for basic disk check/repair, cache cleanup, swap file removal, permissions repair, and preference file checking. You can do basic fixes without being able to load the GUI, and without having a startup CD at hand. This release finally fixes the problems with Apples diskutil tool in Panther, thereby allowing users to repair permissions while in 10.3 again. It also adds a preference file checker/validator and a primitive logging system.
