CJ - Gotcha. I see what y'all mean now. Thanks!
Paul
chipdesigner - Ultimately it doesn't matter what you or the rest of us here think re: unoptimized vs. optimized compiling. What matters is what the compiler user thinks; if they have to do less work to get their software to run well with Intel processors, that'll be kudos to Intel in their eyes. AMD either needs to fight fire with fire or get the AMD supporting compiler people to do so.

CJ - re: losing Pwr cons. race - ROFL!
DARBES - Maybe those "negative views" are intended to help bring about that desired entry point!
Sorry, Keith, I couldn't resist. ;)

How much cache will Yonah need keep both cores fed if it's using the same socket 478 implied in the article?
cd - re: Anandtech's server review mistakes - they do tend to get it right ultimately, though, and come clean about their mistakes. Which can shed even more light on the reality. :)
Paul
wbmw, What your basis for this: "It's not as simple as swapping one part for another"
when they have made the point very strongly that it will be that simple( nothing more than a BIOS update necessary)?
wbmw - Well, that would depend on just what kind of a load you're putting on the interface, wouldn't it? The AGP interface only has one purpose, whereas a faster HT clock will affect most everything. No, I certainly don't expect a huge increase out of it except perhaps in very heavily loaded situations, but I suspect it'll give a few percent and maybe in some surprising places.
Paul
chipdesigner, wbmw - I suspect that HT problem in the Anandtech review is among the questions they mentioned at the end of the review that they'd be investigating further. They're not likely to overlook the fact that the HT "change" of +25% made no difference at all, that's just counterintuitive.

Keith - re: blog
"Williams was sharp as a tack. I wish other interviewees knew their business as well as he did."
Nice to see they have some people who can impress the media.
NaS - Yes, that's always fun - I built my dad's PC and he lives 400 miles away - I know what you mean.
Paul
Keith - re:production samples, Jan. :)
NaS - You might want to try looking around this forum a little, lots of folks dealing with nF4 here:

Helped me a lot when I first got my nForce2 board.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Wayne Inouye wound up as CEO of HP's PC division?

mas - He didn't used to go by Saul, did he? ;)
smooth20 - Opteron didn't have to take over the upper end server market to bump Itanium up to the rarified zone. Once Opteron became a player in the upper end server market, Intel no longer had the option of discontinuing Xeon and forcing migration to Itanium.
Paul
chipguy - Why do you assume this is a given?
"...while IBM has the choice to either push PowerPC harder
and risk losing market share when Montecito ships..."
What reason do you have for such supreme confidence in Itanium's ultimate victory? IBM's been around longer than any of the other players mentioned, and though they've made their mistakes(which of them hasn't?), if they decided to push an architecture hard, I don't know that I'd be willing to bet against them.

SmallPops - "AMD only" ROFL! eom
LOL, Joe!
chipdesigner - re: Cel64 and retail Win64 - you may well have a point there.
No, K7 only supports SSE. Oh, well, it was worth a shot. I'm pretty happy with Firefox's performance as is, I was just curious.
Paul
mmoy - which version do you recommend for K7?
Paul
Keith - must be some sort of configuration/plug-in issue, it works fine for me. Maybe mmoy might know more, as he's into the guts of Firefox/Mozilla pretty heavily.
Paul
Keith - Yes, that should really be where "the rubber meets the road."
BTW, Dell isn't crashing my Firefox; any particular place it tends to happen?
Paul
Keith - I think he's drawn a safe conclusion there.
Paul
CJ - Ah, but that's not what's been implied, is it - that the whole system has to be Intel throughout?
Paul
What happened to that famous Centrino branding value and validation - "If it's Centrino, you don't have to worry about it all working together properly"?

Keith - re: "Toshiba and Sony are among those companies...
"
Sony and Toshiba - what a surprise! Not! ;)
Paul
chipguy - I doubt 2005 will quite fit into your apparent template for them. We shall see.

Keith re: Asus SFF - ABOUT TIME!! eom
Keith - a pretty prestigious win there!
Precious metals/minerals! Gotta stash them away at night. ;)

Firefox is being pushed as a necessary replacement (for security's sake) to IE on some of the Joe Six-pack tech sites like ZDnet, so there's a lot of buzz going on now.
Tenchu - Can both cores access the shared L2 simultaneously?
Paul
I imagine Firefox will become far more than a niche product. You forget that the one thing that can be more powerful than mega-marketing is word of mouth. Firefox is a far superior product, easy to use and free. The only reason I keep IE around is for those sites that do lazy, lousy coding that only IE can properly handle. As Firefox picks up steam, they'll become more and more rare.
Paul
CJ - She talks to a lot of astronauts headed for the space station wanting to make sure they'll have wireless access with the laptops they're sneaking up there. ;)
Just playin', tecate!
Keith - You going to CeBIT this year?
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20955
"...How imminent is the 754 pin 3300+? Some motherboard companies have already released updates to 754 board BIOSes during this week.
So we suspect it's not that far off. We also understand that AMD will roll out a series of road shows this March demonstrating its dual core processors.
And it will use the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany, to show off versions of machines using dual core commercial machines, as it cranks up this particular campaign.
It will use a number of events between March and June to underline its dual core message. µ"
One could hope this means they'll pull in the dual core release to counter Intel, but who knows....
Paul
GC.O - LOL!
