Is Face.com Zuckerberg’s next big purchase?
Ever since Facebook’s $1 billion acquisition of Instagram last month, speculation has been rife about what the social networking giant would buy next. It has made a few purchases since like Lightbox but they have been talent grabs rather than company takeovers. This week the web has been alive with rumours that Facebook has been hiring former Apple engineers to design a new phone and that it was about to plunge into the browser market by buying Opera. The latest rumour is that Facebook is targeting facial recognition software developer Face.com.
The rumour started with Israeli business publication Calcalist and latest reports suggest that the purchase price is somewhere between $80 million and $100 million. The Israeli start-up was founded in 2007 and offers facial recognition software that Facebook users could use to automatically tag friends in shared photos. Interestingly, given Facebook’s need to improve its mobile offering, Face.com just launched a mobile app for iOS called KLIK. As well as facial recognition, KLIK offers photo filtering and a location based photo network, features that would be very useful to Facebook users.
For the moment of course this is all just rumour as is the story that Face.com rebuffed a previous offer from Zuckerberg because the valuation was way too low. Face.com’s CEO Gil Hirsch said on Monday: “We have nothing new to announce or share at this time”.
It could be that the launch of such a Facebook friendly app as KLIK has sparked unfounded rumours but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
The Rise of Social Media in China [Infographic]
It’s easy to assume that America is the hub of world social media — especially considering the origins of Facebook — but the truth is that recent surveys of Chinese Internet users have shown that 95% of them use social networks, putting it on track to become the biggest social media savvy country in the world. Sites like Qzone, Renren and Kaixin 001 have taken off like wildfire in the country. Part of their eager appetite could be due to the fact that China is notorious for controlling state media, so the idea of a network where you can express your own views is very attractive.
The infographic, kindly provided by BestFreeOnline, shows that the number of Chinese Internet users is increasing at a dramatic pace — over 2100% in the last 12 years. With almost 1.4 Billion people, that means there is still a ton of room for growth, and this isn’t just free traffic. Studies are showing a dramatic increase in the amount of e-commerce that occurs in China, and expectations are that Chinese online trade will grow to be the world’s largest by 2015.
Honeymoon gloom: Billionaire Zuckerberg spends just 32 Euro on lunch - with water!
Multi billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg splashed out on a 32 Euro romantic meal with his new bride while on their Italian honeymoon.
Zuckerberg, 28, and Priscilla Chan, 27, were spotted having lunch a Kosher restaurant called Nonna Betta in Roma's Jewish Ghetto where they were snapped by fellow diners.
They tucked into a bargain meal of Roman style artichokes, ravioli in an artichoke sauce and fried pumpkin flowers but they had no alcohol choosing instead water and tea.
Within minutes of leaving the restaurant the owner Umberto Pavoncello had confirmed the couple had paid a visit - while word also quickly spread via Twitter.
The couple's 32 Euro bill - equivalent to $40 - was also posted on the internet by Italian news websites and Mr Pavoncello said: 'They seemed like two lovebirds. They shared a plate of artichoke ravioli in the centre of the table. It was a very romantic scene.'
With Facebook's value plummeting just days and billions being wiped off its share value after it was launched perhaps Zuckerberg was looking after his holiday cash during his break in the Italian capital.
News of the couple's honeymoon in Rome first appeared not on Facebook but on Twitter after a Polish tourist Darek Rusajczyk spotted them having a guided tour of the Sistine Chapel and posted a picture.
Dressed casually they were snapped as they listened intently to a guide explaining the marvels of the stunning 500-year-old Michelangelo frescoes that adorn the walls and ceilings.
Later the couple were spotted in Pierluigi's restaurant where staff revealed they dined out on a supper of prawns Catalan style, oysters and fish carpaccio, followed by lobster pasta and flame grilled fish washed down with a bottle of Chardonnay Gaia e Rei.
Unlike Nonna Betta, staff at Pierluigi were rather more reluctant to reveal the cost of their dinner but it was thought to be in excess of £120 - service not included - with a waiter saying: 'It was just the two of them. They were happy and content. They had an intimate and romantic dinner.'
Besides the Vatican were also spotted at the ancient Colosseum, as well as taking in the sights, sounds and colours of the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps taking photographs every few minutes.
The couple are thought to have arrived in Rome by private jet and stayed at the luxury five star Portrait suites hotel close to the Spanish Steps which is owned by the family of fashion designer Salvatore Ferragamo with prices starting at 800 Euro a night.
Zuckerberg and his new bride had a sumptuous suite overlooking the Trinita dei Monti, the church at the top of the Spanish Steps and enjoyed breakfast in their room every morning before being driven around the city in a chauffeur driven limousine.
On its website the hotel writes: 'Delight in the ‘Dolce Vita’ at the breathtaking Portrait Suites in Rome in the heart of Via Condotti, a stone throw away from the Spanish Steps.'
