Another explanation why AMD is probably in no hurry to implement DDR2.

At least we know some good AMD stuff was going on behind the scenes at CeBIT.

"As usual, one thing that Hannover does supply is a venue for suppliers, for customers and for partners to meet each other. For example, behind the doors of Dresden, Austin and Sunnyvale in the AMD suite, we know that Chimpzilla was showing off stuff firmly barred from hackdom."
robin- re: sockets
64 3200 socket 754 - older single channel DDR to be phased out sooner.
64 3200 939 - newer dual channel DDR longer-lived.
socket 940 - primarily server(Opteron) except for supporting older Athlon 64FX chips, which initially were socket 940 products.
inF4 not up to snuff.

mmoy - He also said that since he figured Power and x86-64 were the two architectures most likely to "take over"(my words), that he'd best get familiar with the other of the 2 players.
I'm sure he'd still accept a dual-core Opteron, though.(Especially after listening to the G5 for a while!)
Paul
chipdesigner - Perhaps not directly proportional, but proportional is possible nonetheless.
Paul
Joe - true. But the end user ignorance is what allows Intel to get away with it with the OEMs. If the end user would demand what they need, the OEMs would provide it(eventually). Just look at how far we've come - from white/brown box Asus motherboards to a plethora of offerings some providing features not available with any Intel offering. Things mayb yet cdhange, but I don't expect it'll happen overnight.
Paul
Keith _ I didn't mean system OEMs, but video card, MB, etc.(component) type OEMs.
Paul
Keith - That's my point re: ignorance. The DIYers aren't and they demand what they want from the OEMs. Average Joe is ignorant and doesn't demand anything from OEMs, just accepts what is dished out (or picks out what he thinks is best from those offerings).
Paul
Forbes and CNET have picked up on the JFTC/Intel story now as well.
Paul
Joe - re: demand limited. Easy - ignorance.

PS. There is just the "Broad River", as well. My wife thinks the early settlers were "true paragons of originality" in naming the rivers. Not.
Duke - They ought to try some of our rivers here in the Carolinas for names. Classics like Big River, Deep River, and my personal favorite, the Pee Pee River. The New River might be appropriate, too. ;)

How could an Intel CPU be connected to a NB by HT?
Paul
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21453
"The CPU is connected to the north bridge with Hypertransport working at 1066MHz. This is the first time that someone used this AMD-driven marchitecture for Intel platforms. The chipset only supports DDR 2, and it will drive DDR 2 memory to 667MHz. Memory wise it will be a direct competitor to Intel's next generation 945 chipset."
Is Fuad exhausted? I can see an HT NB-SB connection, but CPU to NB??

"VIA announces K8N800A chipset for notebooks powered by the AMD Turion 64
Press release; John McClure, DigiTimes.com [Friday 25 February 2005]
VIA Technologies, a developer of silicon-chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced the VIA K8N800A, a low-power core-logic chipset with an integrated graphics processor (IGP) incorporated with the northbridge. The chipset is optimized for AMD’s upcoming Turion 64 mobile technology, as well as the complete range of Mobile AMD Athlon 64 and Mobile AMD Sempron processors.
The VIA K8N800A chipset features the S3 Graphics UniChrome Pro Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP), providing dual-pipeline graphics performance through a 128-bit 2D/3D engine and shared DDR memory support for 3D gaming and applications, while the Chromotion CE Video Display Engine blends hardware-based MPEG-2 decoding acceleration for digital video playback with advanced display technologies for enhanced video rendering and a rich visual experience. Support for an external AGP8x port allows optional graphics processor upgrades on supporting notebooks."

wbmw- Heck with the emotional damages! I rarely believe those are justified. If they did it, however, they ought to be facing substantial punitive damages.
Paul
CJ, tecate - The software will come to the desktop eventually; I'm hoping it'll take long enough for AMD to be able to take advantage of the server side for a while before it does really come to fruition on the desktop, since Intel has chosen to go to the desktop first.
