The ripple effect from Tesla's Gigafactory
From Seeking Alpha:"
The new Gigafactory from Tesla Motors (TSLA) could consume as much as 17% of the current global lithium output in a development that could ease concerns on oversupply, forecasts Goldman Sachs.
...A rising tide lifts all lithium boats......
Tesla Motors @TeslaMotors · Feb 26
Check out some details about what the Gigafactory will look like:
http://www.teslamotors.com/blog/gigafactory …
From AutoblogGreen
"...This leads us to the question of where will the Gigafactory will land. It ought to be some place with lots of sun and wind and, perhaps, a state government keen on incentivizing a new and innovative industry. One, perhaps, that hasn't passed laws to discourage the sale of Tesla's car within its borders. The hot new rumor sees that location as somewhere in Nevada. According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Silver State is being seriously looked at, and may have recently beat out New Mexico as the preferred building site. It certainly would stand to reason. Not only does it have ample sun for solar energy production, it's also the location of the only brine pool lithium production in the US and is close to the company's California operations."
From Forbes:
"Nevada. If Tesla decides to build near Las Vegas, it would easily be the biggest industrial operation in the city, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. But there are a variety of places available around the state. The paper says options could include the 107,000-acre Tahoe Reno Industrial Park in Storey County, about 9 miles east of Reno. It is already home to distribution centers for Wal-Mart, eBay and Toys R Us. A potential Southern Nevada location is the Mountain View Industrial Park in Apex, northwest of Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The park has about 1,800 acres of flat land available, Lisa Cole, vice president of Land Development Associates, a firm that handles real estate there and in surrounding APEX Industrial Park, told the Review-Journal. Meanwhile, Apple has data operations outside Reno, and its downtown area is eager to land more from the computer maker."
From USA Today:
...• Nevada. The Silver State is closest to Tesla's electric car manufacturing plant in Fremont, Calif., south of San Francisco. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that a site at the Reno-Stead Airport is under consideration.
"Tesla is an exceptional company, and we are honored to be included in their list of finalists," said Steve Hill, director of the Governor's Office of Economic Development. "Our office has been working with the regional development authorities and local governments to highlight what Nevada offers: a skilled workforce, responsive workforce development and training programs, exceptional quality of life, great schools, low operating costs, and a commitment ... to provide the climate necessary for innovative businesses to thrive."

Nevada in running for Tesla battery factory
Nevada in running for 6,500-worker Tesla battery factory
Associated Press
Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 | 3:23 p.m.
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Electric car maker Tesla Motors said Wednesday it's considering sites in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas for a massive battery factory that would employ around 6,500 people.
The company didn't immediately name the locations it's considering in those states. Tesla plans to start construction this year and complete the factory — which it dubs its "Gigafactory" — in 2017.
Tesla's share rose nearly 3 percent to $259.90 in after-hours trading.
The factory would supply lithium-ion batteries to Tesla's Fremont, Calif., assembly plant.
Palo Alto-based Tesla says it will invest $2 billion in the 10 million square foot factory, which will cost between $4 billion and $5 billion. Its partners will invest the rest. The company didn't identify those partners Wednesday, but its current battery supplier, Japan's Panasonic Corp., is expected to be among the investors.
Panasonic signed a deal last fall to supply Tesla with 2 billion battery cells over the next four years. But Tesla has fretted that current battery supplies won't meet its future demands.
The new factory will provide enough batteries to supply 500,000 vehicles by 2020, Tesla said. Tesla expects to produce 35,000 vehicles this year.
Tesla currently sells just one vehicle, the Model S sedan, which starts around $70,000. But it plans to begin making a crossover, the Model X, later this year, and wants to bring a lower cost, mass market vehicle to market in 2017. Tesla said the factory would help lower its battery costs by around 30 percent.
Tesla also announced Wednesday it plans to raise $1.6 billion in a debt offering. The proceeds would help finance the new factory and the lower cost vehicle.

QR codes- heart of new partnership with Wendy’s
by Julie Campbell/Mobile Commerce News:
The fast food restaurant chain is now working with NeoMedia Technologies Inc. for its mobile marketing.
It has recently been revealed that the fast food giant, Wendy’s, is now partnering with NeoMedia Technologies Inc. – a mobile barcode management solutions provider – in order to make the firm the exclusive service provider for QR codes for the restaurant chain’s branded promotional activities.
This was revealed within a news release that said that NeoMedia’s Neosphere product will be central to campaigns.
NeoSphere is the firm’s engine for enterprise grade generation and management of QR codes, which provides brands with the ability to connect instantly with mobile content as they provide customers with an experience that is both measurable and targeted. This is not the first time that Wendy’s has used the barcodes within their campaigns, and is an indicator that they haven’t even come close to giving up on the opportunity for the future.
Wendy’s has successfully used QR codes in a number of their campaigns for connecting with customers.
According to a spokesperson from Wendy’s, Denny Lynch, who was quoted in the press release, “Wendy’s has recognized the value of QR campaigns in assisting to build its brand awareness, and NeoMedia’s NeoSphere product provides this connection to our customers.”
The quick service restaurant (QSR) industry has been increasingly finding that these mobile friendly quick response codes are providing tremendous opportunities to be able to reach out to their customers, expanding brand awareness and building a relationship that can develop into a loyalty. It works as an effective way to bridge the gap that exists between the real world and its physical objects, and the digital world to which a rapidly growing number of people have access due to the tremendous penetration of mobile devices such as smartphones.
According to Laura Marriott, the NeoMedia CEO, “QR codes have rapidly become a key mobile media element as brands look to bridge physical and digital media to connect with their consumer. Working together with Wendy’s in the deployment of QR campaigns, will be instrumental in continuing to demonstrate how QR codes can help to drive brand affinity and extend promotions to Wendy’s customers.”

QR Codes is the Future for Events Industry, Moving Food Says
Events industry must embrace QR code technology. That’s what foodservice brand Moving Food told event organizers who participated at a One Wimpole Street conference.
The Numbers
Venue One Wimpole Street recently organized a masterclass among event professionals and found that 99% of the delegates are eager for practical insights into mobile technologies.
The event featured an interactive poll of 100 event organizers to look into their uptake of social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and even location-based sites like Foursquare. A majority of the delegates (80%) have Linked In accounts, but only 25% are active. Most also admitted that they have no idea what Foursquare and other location-based tools are.
The conference discussed how QR codes, smartphone ticketing and mobile Epos influence consumer behavior, how they redefine the expectations of event goers, and how they transform the way brands and venues communicate. The topic of Google+ was also tackled, as well as the benefits and detriments of social media advertising.
Mobile Technology and QR Codes
First speaker Ioannis Pantelidis, who is a technology evangelist and published author, said that people are into mobile technology and consumers are using mobile devices for a lot of things – from taking, sending and receiving videos and photos, to paying bills, browsing the web, listening to music, monitoring health.
Second speaker Stephen Minall, who is the owner and director of Moving Food, stated that smartphone technology is not just the future of business but the “here-and-now.” He said that QR codes, video communication, and mobile data capture are changing how the world works, and that this is filtering into the events industry.
Minall encouraged event professionals to utilize QR codes and get familiar with QR code scanning apps like Core on iPhone and Android, as these will form the basis of mobile ticketing. Paper ticketing, he explained, will soon be obsolete and that we can expect that by 2014s, iPhone will have distributed via iPhone by 2014. QR codes will be embedded with video content, CRM programs, loyalty programs, and interactive venue information.

A Wall Street Transcript Interview with Laura Marriott, the CEO and Board Chairperson of NeoMedia Technologies, Inc. (NEOM)
67 WALL STREET, New York - November 8, 2013 - The Wall Street Transcript has just published its Business and Application Software Report offering a timely review of the sector to serious investors and industry executives. This special feature contains expert industry commentary through in-depth interviews with public company CEOs, Equity Analysts and Money Managers.
Topics covered: Cloud Computing Secular Trends - International Enterprise and Consumer Demand - Application Software Consolidation Activity - Cloud Computing and SaaS Trends - Health Care Transition to ICD-10
Companies include: NeoMedia Technologies Inc. (NEOM)
In the following excerpt from the Business and Application Software Report, the CEO of NeoMedia Technologies discusses her outlook for her company for investors:
TWST: Can you begin with a brief introduction to NeoMedia Technologies, including some highlights from the company's history and an overview of your current operations?
Ms. Marriott: NeoMedia Technologies has been in operation since 1989 and has been one of the early pioneers in the mobile barcode ecosystem. In the mid-1990s, we put together a significant patent portfolio both organically and through acquisition, and those patents have formed the foundation for the services we offer today. NeoMedia is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado; we have offices in Wurselen, Germany, and then we also have staff throughout the United States.
We focus on two main areas. The first is, in the family what we call 2D Core. We have a product called NeoReader, which is a barcode scanning app, available on the major mobile operating systems, which we monetize through SDK sales for enterprises as well as via in-app purchasing and advertisements. And then we have NeoSphere and QodeScan, which are QR creation products, which we sell to brands, agencies and retailers to manage their mobile QR campaigns.
We are very much an enabler to mobile barcode initiatives globally. The other part of our business is intellectual property, and we do a significant amount of licensing and enforcement of our I.P. portfolio as well.
TWST: Who are your customers, and how do they use your products?
Ms. Marriott: Our customers include some of the world's most prominent brands in the areas of financial services, beverage, consumer packaged goods, toy manufacturing and automotive. We help them enable the bridge between the physical world and the digital world. QR codes provide an easy-to-use mechanism for either a consumer or an enterprise to simply scan a code using our reader, or any other open standard code reader, and connect to mobile content. So whether it's a Web site, an application, the App Store or your Facebook page, you are able to have this instantaneous connection to the mobile world or the digital world simply by scanning a QR code. And then we have the underlying patents around our services as well.
QR codes have been around for a long time; it's a symbology that was patented by Dentsu in Japan, and we see a lot of mobile barcodes - not just QR, but 2D adoption as a replacement to UPC codes - as well as this connection between physical and digital worlds. But we also continue to see the introduction and evolution of the technology to be used for more than just marketing or advertising campaigns. We are really seeing mobile barcodes used as a path to purchase products and services, so things like enabling mobile commerce transactions, mobile wallets, couponing and loyalty programs. Thus mobile barcodes have really provided this easy-to-use mechanism for brands to communicate and transact commerce with their consumers.

GoMo News "nothing short of a major victory"
"NeoMedia gets revoked patent reinstated in Europe
by Hans Cett
Doubles all round, we suspect
The folk at NeoMedia (OTC BB:NEOM) must be jumping up and down with delight. The European Patent Office (EPO) has overturned on appeal the earlier revocation of its European Patent No. 0832453. The EP patent is registered in UK, Sweden, Austria, France, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. NeoMedia is a 2D barcode/QR code King. As well all know, NeoMedia’s fortunes are now very heavily linked to how successfully it can enforce its patents and this is nothing short of a major victory.
Following legal action by NeoMedia, the EPO Board of Appeal overturned a previous decision that went against NeoMedia.
Plus it has remitted the case to the EPO Opposition Division for resolution of remaining issues.
Prior to the original opposition hearing, the EPO issued a preliminary opinion commenting in NeoMedia’s favour on the issues of novelty and inventive step.
As NeoMedia says, “There is therefore now reason to expect that the outcome will be maintenance of the patent.”
Thanks to our previous coverage of NeoMedia, we know well that there will be a whole host of our readers who are NeoMedia investors and will overjoyed to hear such news."
