Microsoft has perfect pitch for MTVi
By Skinny DuBaud
October 12, 2001
Now that bombs are dropping on Afghanistan, the technology news media's habit of borrowing from the vocabulary of war to describe the machinations of software companies seems a bit melodramatic, to say the least. Fortunately the browser war has been declared over, or we would have to rename it after something more proportional, like a boxing match, or a spelling bee.
Still, the wartime maxim that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" comes to mind with the latest rumors grinding through the mill, which are pairing Microsoft's MSN Music initiative and Viacom's MTVi unit.
Rumor has it that Microsoft and Viacom are negotiating an alliance that will help the two battle--that is, score points against--the AOL Time Warner online music juggernaut.
Consider what Microsoft and Viacom are up against: the world's largest ISP; its Web radio service Spinner; the Net music player Winamp; AOL's MusicNet online subscriptions alliance with RealNetworks, EMI Recorded Music and BMG Entertainment; Radio@AOL, an online radio station to be built into AOL 7.0; and a newly focused AOL Music division under former BMG Entertainment executive Kevin Conroy.
Microsoft has been doing its best to keep time to the music, launching MSN Music this spring with play list personalization technology acquired with MongoMusic a year ago. It also allied itself with Vivendi and Sony's subscription service Pressplay. And the software giant cozied up to the MTV generation Friday with its announcement that Madonna, who's signed to AOL Time Warner's Warner Bros. label, would sing backup on its Windows XP marketing blitz.
An alliance with MTV could go a long way toward boosting Microsoft's musical ambitions, but the benefits would cut both ways. MTV has a great brand, which Microsoft would like to exploit, and MTV could use access to MSN's claimed 250 million consumers worldwide.
Microsoft and Viacom declined to comment. But those familiar with their negotiations said a deal was brewing.
"MTV is really interested in joining Microsoft's music initiative," said one of our musically inclined Skinformants close to Viacom. "They have been talking for a while. Think about MTV's desire to be on the Web. They have an interesting brand, but that's about it."
Analysts said the two companies' music efforts would harmonize nicely.
"We're at a time when most of the major media companies and music-oriented sites are looking at opportunities and prospects, so it's perfectly natural that MSN Music would be talking to MTV," IDC analyst Susan Kevorkian told the Rumor Mill. "If this partnership comes to fruition, MSN would be using MTV to leverage what's still a relatively new music effort."

Motorola Offers Handsfree Wireless Car Phone System
LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Wireless technology giant Motorola Inc. on Monday introduced a new hands-free phone system for cars that will allow drivers to make calls from their regular cell phones using voice commands.
Motorola's product uses a new technology called Bluetooth, which provides a wireless connection to a cell phone. The technology is incorporated into a car kit that includes a speaker, microphone and control panel and is installed into a car dashboard.
The Chicago area-based firm said consumers will be able to activate the phone system by just starting the car. The activated system will then automatically connect to the cell phone, making hands-free calls possible.
The cell phone can be anywhere in the car, within 30 feet of the car kit, in order to be connected.
Drivers can use simple verbal commands to place calls.
The hands free carkit system, which is expected to be available in the second quarter, offers 100 voice activation numbers and is compatible with phones that don't support voice recognition.
Motorola said that it will also introduce a headset incorporating the same Bluetooth technology, allowing cell phone users to make hands free calls from any location. The headset is expected to be available in the first quarter with a suggested retail price of $199.
The ability to make phone calls hands-free while driving has become important as dozens of states are considering bans on using handheld cell phones while driving. New York state was the first state to put such a ban into effect late last year.
Separately, Motorola also unveiled its first cell phone model in the United States for Qualcomm Inc.'s next generation wireless network called CDMA (news - web sites) 2000 1X. CDMA 1X offers high-speed, always-on Internet connectivity.
Motorola has already introduced three CDMA 1X cell phones in Korea.
The company said the phone will be available later this month and is expected to retail for less than $100. The phone will be compatible with its MP3 music player accessory and will include features such as text messaging, voice recognition, and enhanced phone book.

LAS VEGAS, CES BOOTH #1000, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., today unveils the first AM/FM/CD player with built-in 10 GB hard disk drive for in-car use. The DEH-P90HDD features a MagicGate(TM) Memory Stick(R) player, an integrated Gracenote CDDB(TM) Database and Music Recognition Service, MP3 playback and is XM Satellite Radio ready.
The DEH-P90HDD's built-in 10GB hard disk can accommodate up to 200 CDs of music. Music can be "ripped" directly from the built-in CD player or over-the-air broadcasts at real-timespeed. It can be transferred at two different bit rates (132kbps/105kbps) using ATRAC3 compression, which offers excellent replay clarity while maintaining small file sizes. The player offers the industry's first built-in Gracenote CDDB(TM) Music Recognition Service, which automatically provides information including the artist name, song title and CD title for each track that has been recorded to the hard drive. The Gracenote database currently includes more than 13 million songs. The database in the DEH-P90HDD can be updated through the Memory Stick player as new information is available.
"The DEH-P90HDD converges computer technology with car audio," said Michael Townsen, vice president of marketing for mobile entertainment at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. "Consumers can now store their favorite albums in their cars without having to swap CDs in their CD player. Memory Stick makes the transportability of music much more convenient."
Music stored on the hard drive can be organized by creating up to six custom playlists or by using the playlists automatically generated by the DEH-P90HDD. This makes the unit extremely easy to use.
All major copyright protection standards are adhered to, including the Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) and the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI). The DEH-P90HDD employs "MagicGate" encryption and authorization technology, which prohibits unauthorized copying.
With its Soft Key operation, Pioneer's intuitive operating system makes navigation, selection and programming of music simple. EVOLUTION TECHNOLOGIES AND MTV® UNVEIL THE MTV DATAPLAYTM ENABLED MUSIC PLAYER AT THE 2002 CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW
http://www.dataplay.com/jsp_files/en/news/pressreleases-desc.jsp?pressrelease=pressrelease-desc-02-0...
Making Music and History for Music Fans with the Ability to Store up to Eleven Hours of Music
(Las Vegas - January 7, 2002) - Evolution Technologies, MTV® and DataPlayTM announce the world's first DataPlay-enabled digital audio player that utilizes the new innovative DataPlay technology. The DataPlay-enabled device, considered to be the next generation of portable devices, operates as a music player, a recorder, an external storage drive and an optical media burner. The device is much smaller than CD players and many solid-state digital audio players and will be commercially available to consumers in April 2002. DataPlay digital media supports MP3, WMA, AAC and QDX formats, and has the capacity to store up to 500 MB of universal content, including music, images, documents, software, games, video and more. In terms of musical content, this allows over eleven hours of high quality MP3 music, or the equivalent of five complete pre-recorded albums of CD-quality music.
Evolution Technologies was one of several consumer electronics makers to enter into a relationship with DataPlay in 2001 to co-develop devices - such as portable music players/recorders, digital cameras, PC peripherals, PDAs and portable games. By partnering with companies like Evolution, DataPlay can satisfy a broad consumer audience with a variety of devices and content.
"Our strategy has always been to penetrate the market quickly and effectively by building numerous technology, manufacturing and marketing partnerships, such as our relationships with MTV and DataPlay," said Brad Deifer, President of Evolution Technologies. "DataPlay digital media, with its unique size, capacity and functionality, has the potential to deliver the most universal, portable and cost-effective digital media solution available in the marketplace."
Tony Calandra, Director, Interactive Products for MTV states, "This new product is in line with our dedication to breaking new ground through music and entertainment. The MTV audience has consistently been early adopters and this device is the perfect combination of music and technology that our audience loves."
"Aligning ourselves with MTV helps DataPlay to gain credibility among music consumers, and by partnering with Evolution on the device's development, we can guarantee a top quality product for that audience," said Todd Oseth, senior vice president of corporate development for DataPlay. "These kinds of mutually beneficial partnerships are critical for gaining market share in a competitive environment like the consumer electronics industry."

RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox Stores Thousands of Songs in a Portable Package
January 7, 2002 – With a 10GB hard-disc drive big enough to hold thousands of songs as well as computer files and digital images, the versatile RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox is about to change the way consumers store collections of mp3 music, presentations, and favorite digital photos. Compatible with both the Mac and PC platforms, the RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox from Thomson multimedia (Paris Euroclear: 18453) (NYSE: TMS) is mp3PRO-ready for a spring 2002 software download that will double the unit's storage capacity for digital music by utilizing the improved mp3PRO music format.
This combination audio player and storage device supports both mp3 and mp3PRO playback and functions as a computer hard drive. When updated to play mp3PRO files, the 10GB RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox will store 300 hours of music – the equivalent of most consumers’ entire CD library – in one device. The LYRA Personal Jukebox, Model RD2800, will be available in late spring with a suggested retail price of $299.
“As the co-developer of mp3 and mp3PRO, Thomson multimedia is uniquely positioned to be a strong competitor in the fast growing audio jukebox category,” said Mark Redmond, Vice President, Worldwide Audio Products, Thomson multimedia. “Utilizing our vast knowledge and experience in coding technology, our team has developed an advanced, but affordable digital storage device that is compatible with PCs and Macs. We have taken the jukebox concept one step further by incorporating computer storage capability and other unique features not found on other digital audio jukebox products,” Redmond added.
Multifunctional, robust, and lightweight, the RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox is more than just a music storage and playback device – it also provides complete hard drive capability. Consumers can use the LYRA Personal Jukebox to store and transport files from a desktop, including digital images, and presentation and word processing documents. Users can also download and store information from the Internet. Weighing just 11 ounces, the RD2800 is compatible with both the PC and Mac platforms (Windows 98SE, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP, or Mac OS X.)
Using the included USB cable, consumers can transfer a typical three-minute song from a computer to the LYRA Personal Jukebox hard drive in just four seconds. Users can easily create playlists from the songs stored on the Jukebox for personalized listening enjoyment, instead of on the PC. A rechargeable battery provides 12 hours of playback time and the unit’s 8MB memory buffer allows seven minutes of continuous playback from the unit's built-in anti-shock memory at 128kpbs and 14 minutes at 64kpbs for skip-free music. Another time saving feature of the LYRA Personal Jukebox is Automatic Sync, which updates both the desktop computer and the LYRA Personal Jukebox so that they have identical content.
Consumers will enjoy the extensive sorting capability that enables them to quickly access their favorite songs. LYRA Personal Jukebox offers seven sorting options: by artist, album, title, genre, user playlist, audio file and all files. Additionally, the unit has an eight-line backlit LCD screen that displays information including playlist name, song title, artist title, album name, genre, current track being played, volume level indicator, elapsed time of track or pause indicator, playback mode indicator, bit-rate and DSP setting. Six adjustable DSP music settings accommodate different types of music (Bass, Rock, Pop, Jazz) and listening preferences (custom bass and treble settings) and the unit offers customized five-track graphic equalization.
The RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox comes with MusicMatch music management software. For added convenience, the device also includes a car adapter kit that lets consumers enjoy their tunes on the road and a line out cable for easy connection to a home audio system. Back Band headphones make for comfortable personal listening. Additionally, the unit's shock-mounted hard drive is designed for rugged portable use.

Gary, I have also encountered the error message during downloads. So far, it only occurs with files that were ripped using the Musicmatch MP3 encoder at 128 or 160 kbps settings. It has not occurred with files encoded via the Musicmatch WMA encoder or with files encoded by other software packages. You might try using a 3rd party MP3 encoder or the WMA encoder with the troublesome CDs.

Big News! EDIG at CES!
Subject: CES: e.Digital will demo 10 GB digital jukebox, voice command digital music player
Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 13:45:19 -0600
From: "Cecil, Erin"
At CES, how would you like to check out a portable digital jukebox that holds 150 hours worth of music (10 GB) and still fits in your pocket? How about the first digital music player to use voice commands to move between music tracks?
e.Digital will be on hand at CES this year to demo both of their newly released products, the Treo 10 and the MXP 100. With it's 10 GB of memory, small size and $249 price tag, the Treo 10 has been making quite a splash. We are currently scheduling briefings with e.Digital executives for Jan. 8-11th. If you would like a chance to demo the products and talk to e.Digital, please just let me know.
Sincerely,
Erin K. Cecil

I wonder if we should attach any significance to the fact that the banner features our corporate website URL rather than the Edig-Store URL? Non-competition clause?

An afterthought: The skating program was taped in Dallas; Radio Shack corporate hq is in Ft. Worth. Nothing conclusive - just food for thought.
Some thoughts from JimC1997 at SI:
It is hilarious to see the Raging Bull bashers nit-picking this incredible development! How they would have howled with derision yesterday if any of us had posted a rumor that EDIG would be advertising on national television in December!
How many companies could do what e.Digital has done in the past few weeks?
- Introduced four new products which made it the only consumer electronic company to offer three distinct types of digital audio players.
- Announced that it would have its own branded DataPlay audio player and confirmed that most audio DataPlay devices would be using e.Digital technology.
- Built and launched an e-commerce site.
- Initiated a multi-year contract with an OEM (Musical) that is manufacturing their jukebox design (with direct CD encoding capability) for a national retailer.
- Saw that new OEM product featured in Circuit City's very critical Thanksgiving advertising.
- Received extensive media attention and favorable reviews of all of those new products.
- Obtained significant exposure from its giant technology partners - IBM, Lucent and Texas Instruments - including direct marketing support.
- Rewarded its shareholders with special pricing on its flagship product.
- Became the first consumer audio brand to introduce voice navigation into its products, garnering extensive media attention due to that fact.
- Had its digital juke box compared favorably to Apple's highly publicized iPOD ($150 less expensive, twice the storage capacity and fully PC compatible) by major media reports.
- And now is about to advertise its revolutionary products on national television!
Amazing.
And Fred promised that we would see a number of other surprises in the next few weeks. Remember, CES is just one month from today.
The bashers will say, "Yeah, but the shareprice is only $1.21!"
And the smart investor will say, "Yes, that is quite a bargain. Thank you for reminding me!"
Does anyone here think that the company is a bigger risk today, after all of these positive developments and the stock priced at $1.21, than it was one year ago when it was at $3?

Bit late to fix it; the show was taped Dec. 3rd.
JimC1997 chats with Robert Putnam:
http://www.siliconinvestor.com/stocktalk/msg.gsp?msgid=16763152
"I spoke to Fred Falk today and he was very happy about the initial reaction to both the MXP-100 and the Treo. He said that the orders are greatly exceeding their expectations despite the fact that their marketing programs are still in their early stages. Apparently the coincidence of the iPOD release by Apple could not have worked out better for e.Digital. The media has been made aware of the potential for digital jukeboxes and the Treo provides the PC world with a great alternative.
I asked him about the criticism that the MXP-100 has received about slow data transfer rates and he said that he believes that its transfer rate is better than that of the Nomad. Perhaps someone here could look into that point.
I have the feeling from his very exuberant comments that some exciting brand-development campaigns are under consideration.
I mentioned to him that someone (packers1) posted a recap of the promises he made at the shareholder meeting and that so far they have accomplished every one in the order presented. He then said that we can count on the company to fulfill each of the goals they outlined and that he expected a few more happy surprises for the shareholders in the next couple of weeks.
Fred said that morale at e.Digital has never been higher and that they (and we) had very good reason to be very confident about the outlook for the company heading into the CES."
JimC
Postscript: Subsequent to this message I saw the announcement about the e.Digital TV sponsorship this Sunday 12/9/01. No wonder Fred was excited when I spoke to him.
Consider this week's developments: We now have four products in the marketplace, including one at a major retailer and our first television commercial. Not bad for a little company from Poway! Congratulations Fred & Company!

GOOD DEAL!!!
endomatic, the Maycom MP90 went "on the shelf" at the EDIG store about the same time as the MXP 100. We get a small mark-up from its sales there, but it predates our relationship with Maycom and is not one of our designs.

TechTV script.....
From the person on the Comdex floor demonstrating MXP100:
I have about a 100 songs in here right now...
and I'll just say something like, the rolling stones...
It switches to the rolling stones and then I can go and select the track I want....Track.....Play..
We'll see we've got, actually, the rolling stones, are playing away as we speak....
A couple of really good things about this one, it's just the voice activated technology, it seems to work very well with every voice we've tried....
Doesn't matter what kind of accent you have..I had a gentleman who had a great Indian accent, who worked with this just perfectly, as did I....
The microdrive technology, you can store MP3 wave files, anything you want on here, it's a voice recorder...
It's also very good for safety reasons, if your driving down the road, you don't want to look at the device...
currently, it's $339. You can get it with the 340mg microdrive, or without the microdrive, just by itself its $180....
It's available right now on edig.com... thats EDIG.COM
Ed, I'll send it back to the studio....
What a great device, I like it to. I'm actually writing down the figures, because I think I'm gonna go get me one.
The backlit, it's perfect, it also records voice, I like the whole package....
very cool....

Full Audio cuts content deal with UMG
http://www.mi2n.com/press.php3?press_nb=29709
NEW YORK and CHICAGO (November 12, 2001) – FullAudio today announced a digital rights licensing agreement from Universal Music Group for FullAudio's unique cache-download, music subscription service. The two-year, non-exclusive agreement grants to FullAudio the rights to conditional tethered downloads from a broad selection of the Universal Music catalog, which FullAudio will incorporate into the growing collection of music its service will provide to subscribers.
Universal is the second company to award FullAudio both recording and publishing licenses. FullAudio has also previously secured sound recording rights from EMI Recorded Music, and composition rights from Universal Music Publishing, EMI Music Publishing, and BMG Music Publishing as part of its continuing effort to secure legal content from all music publishers and all five major record labels.
"UMG's primary goal is to provide more music to more people in more places," said Larry Kenswil, president Universal Music Group's eLabs. "The Full Audio subscription service will be a place where our music can reach music lovers, so we look forward to the launch and a friendly working relationship with FullAudio."
"Every new license that FullAudio signs is a big win for us and music fans, so we are very excited about our new relationship with Universal," said Chris Copeland Gladwin, chairman and CEO of FullAudio. "As we get closer to launch it is important that we provide as much quality content as possible to our distributors and their subscribers—and Universal is certainly a great addition to our rapidly growing music library."
Cache-Download vs. Streaming Technology
FullAudio's patent-pending solution provides a high-quality music experience, offering consumers two distinct advantages over streaming providers. First, whereas the listening quality of streaming music is only as good as a user's Internet connection, FullAudio delivers superior sound quality, regardless of connection speed. Second, FullAudio enables consumers to play tracks when they're not connected to the Internet.
The FullAudio Subscription Service Model
FullAudio is creating a unique, cache-download subscription service platform provided to distribution partners, on which they can build the engine for their own co-branded, consumer digital music services.
For a monthly fee, the FullAudio subscription platform provides fans with unlimited play of a set number of tracks (subscription "slots") they choose. Much like the subscription models of cable television, fans will have access to their FullAudio music service only as long as their account is in good standing. Also very much like cable, FullAudio offers varying levels of subscription service, providing fans with competitive pricing options related to the amount of music to which they choose to subscribe. The higher the level of subscription (Silver, Gold, Platinum), the more slots consumers are given to fill with their favorite and new music. Music transferred to fans through the FullAudio service is unlocked from the memory on the consumer's PC by the FullAudio service, a seamless process for easy listening when the subscription is maintained.
It appears that ACELP is widely used as an 8 kbps voice compression algorithm for the TI TMS320C DSP line:

Here's the scoop. If orders were not placed before 12am est then they were not picked up by FedEx for saturday delivery. I think the sight came up right around 12 so I doubt anyone will have it till 10am monday(est). The good news is that a vast number has been purchase( Thousands! ). They couldn't give me the exact number but said they are extremely busy filling the orders. GAWD!

"Looking at the previous messages on this board, I realize the cat is out of the bag. There is information that is correct, and information that is way off base. I will tell you that the new APPLE recorder is hot, but not in the same league with what is coming out by EDIG and a flurry of OEM's. Voice, music, e-mail, quality, flexibility, size, recording time, playing time are just a few of the delicious items encapsulated in this less than 5 oz's of majic. But biggest of all, it will be the first voice activated unit on the market. IBM is big in this product, and will participate in its announcement. Big name OEM's will be involved."

Readers Enable Drivers to Download 18 Hours of Internet Music
Fremont, Calif. – August 27, 2001 – SCM Microsystems (Nasdaq: SCMM, Neuer Markt: SMY), a leading provider of solutions that open the Digital World, today announced an agreement to supply Blaupunkt GmbH with USB flash memory reader technology. SCM’s readers will be bundled with the first MP3 compatible car audio system integrating visual display capabilities, launched by Blaupunkt at the IFA show in Berlin.
Blaupunkt’s new MP3 car audio system, the Virtual Changer, is compatible with all Blaupunkt car radios and includes an MP3 player, a 1GB capacity IBM Microdrive for music storage and an SCM USB digital media reader. Unlike other MP3 car audio systems on the market, Blaupunkt’s Virtual Changer displays a musical index and details about individual selections, so listeners can navigate the music files just as they would on a traditional CD changer.
Using SCM’s digital media reader/writers, music fans can quickly download up to 18 hours of MP3 music from the Internet onto a Microdrive, and then pop the miniature drive directly into the Blaupunkt MP3 player for immediate listening. The SCM reader/writer makes it easy and convenient for users to enjoy Blaupunkt’s new MP3 player, eliminating the need to carry the player in from the car and connect it to the PC every time new musical selections are desired.
"Digital audio, especially MP3, has revolutionized how people listen to music and this trend has now hit the automotive market," said Robert Schneider, Chief Executive Officer at SCM Microsystems. "Blaupunkt is recognized worldwide for its design and innovation in car audio and navigation systems. Our experience and manufacturing capability to deliver high quality, cost-effective readers was the key behind SCM being chosen as the supplier for this leading edge application. We support Blaupunkt’s accomplishment of delivering the world’s first MP3 'display and play' car audio system."
SCM’s USB reader/writers offer users download speeds up to 1.2Mb/s and can read and write to any Compact Flash II form factor media card as well as the IBM Microdrive. The new Blaupunkt MP3 car audio system will be available in Europe beginning in October and will be released in the U.S. at a later date.
