It take a full three months between the time that Hector starts to "turn the knob" and the time that supply hits the suppliers. If so, this "constained" situation would appear to be "a good thing" as Martha would say.
But, none in stock.
I think that inteL is extremely vulnerable here. The people who buy these "High End Thin and Lights" could not care less about the technical details, they just want the "BEST" and 64 bits is twice 32 bits, so they will pay for them (the bits, all of them, because, as everyone knows, more is better) and I suspect that the incentive is tremendous to come to market with it.
Dan, Keith, I really think that a viable (possibly a KILLER) "Thin and Light" AMD 64 based candidate will emerge not long after the first 90 nm chips are widely avaiable from AMD. Ruiz has called attention to this arena several time now, and given his practice of understatement, I suspect that he has something up his sleeve other than some more cheap "me too" offerings.
The only thing that worries me is how much AMD common will swoon on the announcement(s).
(EDIT)But, in the public's eye, the centrinO system is perceived as head and shoulders above the various "cheap" Athlon M offerings. What AMD needs is the introduction of a high end premium "Thin & Light" series of very desireable offerings by very credible sources. I am reading between the line; but, I suspect that these will come in a few months with the first 90nm very low power Athlon 64s. I am guessing that some of these CPUs will draw less than 20 watts. They will be centrinO killers, something that AMD needs and inteL does not need.
When someone produces one that you "GOTTA HAVE", you will know that the centrinO is in big trouble. AMD common will probably have gone up some by then and you will probably be able to afford it as well.
s'why i am a funney mentalist.
I am betting (a lot) on this: http://www.siliconinvestor.com/stocktalk/msg.gsp?msgid=20141581
So...What else is new? That is what we keep him arond for.
This relatively astute post is probably worth a read: http://www.siliconinvestor.com/stocktalk/msg.gsp?msgid=20140653
Your SI link is defective. Please re-cite and repost.
Hector could get rid of most, if not all, of that premium by turning the dial all the way to the right.
Just the difference between English and ANALese.
SHEEESH...that should really take AMD down.
GGGGOOOOOOOLLLLLYYYY I wonder just when OSHA will upgrade this hazardous wasted stock.
According to Schwabface, AMD was upgraded by Argus to "BUY" from "HOLD" on May 14 .
I read the Schwab(face) reported comments from Argus as pretty much identical with what was claimed.
Sorry if I was obscure, from: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=3091212
these will be A64's with their nuts chopped off
That would appear to be a eunuch set of desireable features: http://www.eunuch.org/index2.php?PHPSESSID=85b5680ee023c61d554a7fdbc4e040d2
This market is nuts
So, what is new(s) about that ?
andY bryanT to appear on CNBC shortly.
Is it Bill or Billy Graham ?
Yes but it is 32 bit and will be obsolete in about a year; and it does not have NX. I will wait for AMD's real "thin and light".
[edit]Reading between the lines, I sensed that the real reason that he did not recommend selling inteL is his credibility...you know...motherhood, apple pie, the flag...and you do not short inteL.
MAZELTOV :)
What you say is in line with my past retail experience with ML(pf&s).
What I heard is that the move to 64 bits will drive a surprisingly robust upgrade cycle which intel will be late to and which inteL will benefit from nevertheless. GOOOLLLLY...which stock would you buy ?
I believe that the implication was that it IS okay to sell inteL in order to raise money to buy AMD :)
And here I thought that it was W. C. Fields that, that story was attributed to.
edit They will pull out all the stops
As opposed to the nice, laid back attitude that they have shown towards AMD up until now. I guess that AMD had better watch out ! As opposed to the laid back stance thay they have taken up until now.
It looks to me as though, assuming the AMD is able to provide a moving target, inteL's marketing approach for at least the next year will have to be: Buy our chips for higher cost and lower performance because we used to have the highest performing cpu chips and we promise, "Scout's Honor", to soon offer the best cpu chips once again.
Anyone else have some thoughts on this ?
the wigs at inteL have to be passing giant cinder blocks into their collective diapers over thoughts about Fab 36.
I had not heard about it.
AMD Opteron 250 to launch on May 18th
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15785
Thank you for the straight line. Your post was impeccably timed
How Intel pulls off this transition will be critical. Anderson said she did not expect there to be a gap in the product launches and therefore no financial impact from the swap to a different type of chip.
This really does sound like vintage self-reassurance to me.
chip giant AMD Gotta love it.
It already is.
Accumulation under a weak market ?
I am usually very bad at this kind of call; but, AMD is acting as though it wants to go up. inteL and the market seem to be retarding it.
Jumped...I was pushed...AND I am proud of it.
he is setting himself up for an upgrade
I have had that feeling since he indicated that "ML(pf&s) seeks an investment banking relationship with AMD" is that a kowinkedink ?
No great insight on my part. I am an experimental Physicist and not a Chip Technologist. I have been around long enough to know that most things in life seldom scale the way that you anticipate.
