PTSC Announces New JAVASeed Processor Technology
SAN DIEGO, Jun 26, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Patriot Scientific Corp. (OTCBB:PTSC) today announced JavaSeed(TM), a new, patent-pending, processor technology that allows the pervasive and economical use of the Java(TM) language even down to the sensor level by vastly reducing the cost of using Java in systems.
The company is marketing JavaSeed to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and prospective licensees for use in a wide variety of consumer and industrial applications where no system resources are available and seamless Java compatibility is desired. Examples would include, use within distributed sensors, smart card and control applications. JavaSeed also offers the same advantages when used in emerging network appliances such as multi-use set-top boxes, games, security systems and wireless applications.
The new PTSC technology minimizes system resource requirements to unparalleled levels, produces virtually universal system compatibility, and reduces system costs compared to conventional virtual machine systems. JavaSeed processor technology supports the full range of Java enterprise functionality. Also, it provides a unique methodology that allows system developers to ensure forward capability of deployed systems with evolving virtual machine technologies, ideally suited for integration with the company's high performance IGNITE(TM) product suite and JUICEtechnology(TM). PTSC has initiated discussions with prospective JavaSeed licensees, and the company expects to license JavaSeed to multiple licensees within the next 3 quarters.
"Java Seed technologies will be the basis for twenty-first century products that will have the ability to be dynamically upgraded with both software and logic on the customer premises," said Dr. Patrick Nunally, vice president and chief technology officer of PTSC. "The incipient architecture of JavaSeed will revolutionize and significantly extend the employment of Java at the very lowest levels of system processing, especially in pervasive computing products."
Serge J. Miller, vice president of engineering for PTSC, said, "JavaSeed is a breakthrough in processor technology, allowing Java to take on a completely new role in products. The unique, patent pending design of JavaSeed is the first processor that has low enough size, power and cost requirements to be effectively integrated at levels of processing that are far beneath what industry pundits refer to as 'deeply-embedded' system levels, but is more aptly called the substrate level."

Cksla-I saw them all there this weekend.
I don't recall seeing Maycom & LG before that. I think I counted 45 or 46 logos there on Saturday. Eastech it there also.
Murrayhill-Well said. We whom have remained here throughout
will be rewarded for their patience, with a company who has had the technology for the future way ahead of it's time. This change in the way people listen to their music, along with a myriad of other new waves that are just ready to come onto the scene, will put this little company right in the middle of it all. Shifts in new technological mediums, like those that are about to happen, do not happen overnight, or even over months and a few short years. This shift has been in the works for many years. We are just lucky enough to have found a small company that is right in the middle of it.
Watch the Dataplay disc very closely this fall. This will change the way we all record and listen to music.
Good luck to you, and thank you for all of your important contributions to other shareholders.
Sentinel Speaks to RP.
Conversation with Robert Putnam (6/21/01):
We had about a 15 minute conversation this evening. I have to admit that I couldn't take nearly as many notes as I usually do,and that being said, this is the product of my scrawlings and recollection. Everything is paraphrased and in my own words. Put whatever faith you'd like in it, or none at all....
The highlights:
Not just PC makers interested in bundling. Some CE companies interested as well, and they might "bundle" EDIG product in their online sales ("e-tailing")of other products, or use other channels of distribution.. Some companies will brand the player themselves, while others will bundle players that have been branded by other CE companies.
I asked if the bundling companies would be putting the "Powered by e.Digital" trademark on the product and he said some would, some wouldn't. Nothing new. But he said that in at least one case, e.Digital will have some sort of significant branding opportunity. By this I believe he meant in that the e.Digital name will be prominently displayed on the exterior of the product, and that the "Powered by e.Digital" trademark would be used as a prominent marketing point by the OEM. He wouildn't say too much about it, but it was unique enough that he mentioned it. I don't even bother to ask for timeframes anymore. LOL
We talked about "end to end systems", and where the portable device would be mobile (of course), but also be able to plug into the home entertainment system as well as a car dash system, seamlessly. He said they are working on this with OEM's, designing not only the handheld device, but the software interface as well as docking stations. Our experience with Lanier helped us in this capacity.
Speaking of Lanier, we will definitely get a summary of product shipped as well as guidance about future shipments with the quarterly management correspondence.
For those who are confused a "global standard" means getting enough e.Digital technology into enough name brand devices (from global CE companies) that the e.Digital name becomes recognizable and connotes a reputation for excellence. This is centered around multiple platforms in multiple applications, not just MicroOS. There are other unannounced platforms that they continue to develop, and which we will eventually hear about. He mentioned that they have alluded to them in the past. I think one only needs to read Mr. Falk's last letter to understand where they are headed with this. Again, I didn't ask for timeframes.
We are close to hearing abot one, maybe two , silicon solutions utilizing embedded MicroOS. I don't care so much about the timeframe here as the confirmation that we have at least 2 OEM's in this part of the market.
We are the primary integrator for DataPlay at present, and they fully realize what EDIG can do for them. DataPlay is shooting for end of third quarter/beginnning of fourth for product launch. The trick for them is to establish enough manufacturing capacity for their read/write heads. There are a few different OEM versions of the Orbit platform which will be launched when DataPlay becomes widely available.
Our DataPlay work for Samsung and Toshiba has led to other opportunities with those companies (which of course could not be commented upon).
OEM's have long been asking EDIG for a way to coordinate the whole product cycle, from planning and design to the logistics of post production, testing, fulfillment, etc. OEM's do not wish to build out the infrastructure within themselves, and are willing to give e.Digital an additonal revenue stream if they handle it for them. This is where Jim Collier comes in. He has extensive experience with these processes and has brought a couple of people with him (and may bring a couple more) to help get these process channels established. Robert was very pleased to have Jim onboard I think. Not only will we be paid to design and integrate, but now we will get paid to oversee and coordinate the actual production. This is a real opportunity in that it gains us more revenues, fulfills OEM needs and makes EDIG a one stop shop and super convenient for them, and it also gives EDIG a better idea of the internal OEM timelines for product launch. Because they don't have to staff up for each new product (and assume additional risk), OEM's can now more easily develop multiple products, which will help EDIG's bottom line even more with NRE fees as well as additional royalties.
As far as the recent flurry of content announcements from the Labels and providers, Robert said that we have scene intentions, but not specifics. The jukebox devices are not dependent on the content, but devices like the MP2000 and other flash based players are. When the content actually does arrive, then the market for these players will truly develop.
That's about it. Hope this helps some of you. There was really nothing new and unfortunately I was a bit rushed at the time he called me back. My apologies if this falls short for some of you. My advice is to call him yourselves if you have issues.
Cheers!

ChasingTheDream Sounds Off
To All: My opinion on the earnings release is that EDIG could have something big planned to slingshot the shareprice, if they release that the fiscal year for
2000 is equal to the last three years combined and then a couple of weeks later release that the first quarter of the 2001 fiscal is equal to all of last years total which would be approx. $2 million or even more, that would be a huge growth and might just be the news to get us above $5
to re-apply for Nasdaq.
I myself was told at CES by a TI rep that whenever their
DSP was put into a player of any kind that delt with music,
EDIG was right there with it because it sounded the best with EDIG technology along with it. And there were about 35 players at there booth and the rep said all of them had
EDIG inside along with TI DSP. This leds me to believe that
the royalties from TI may be paid later this year after the players have been sold and tested in the market for consumer approval. With this in mind Fred could have known
that the revs would exceed $50 million for 2001 fiscal year.
I heard the part about what fred said about the rev on the board somewhere don't know if it's true or not . But anyway
I think there is alot we are going to find out about revenue in the near future. Thier plan is about to unfold and I have waited over 2 years and been confident that this stock will change my life for the good in fact I just
got my personalized plates that read DOS2MOS on them so if you live in nevada this ones mine went on my Lexus EDIG bought me from the run up last year and have doubled my position since then , bought all the way down so I will
wait as long as it takes and suggest you all to do so too.
Thanks for reading but Just My Humble Opinion but it makes since to me and maybe a few of you,

jonvaljon1:
If I'm not mistaken, Dataplay is an ATA type II, compatible kind of media drive. If not ATA compatible, certainly a similar open and published standard - not something uniquely provided to edigital. As a result, Dataplay will certainly publish the spec with the hopes of as many companies as possible - especially 'Japan Inc' (Sony, Matsushista, etc) making products that house this drive. Intriguing? Absolutely. Unique? Hardly. My point is that edigital continues -- to coin a phrase from longtooth, to be "name dropping wanna-bes" hitching their name to 'the next hot thing'.
I think you misunderstand me. I do not claim, nor do I believe, that e.Digital will be unique in working with the DataPlay optical engines. My point is that it is confirmed that e.Digital is developing a PCMCIA storage device for Samsung at this very minute. I say "confirmed" because don't think for even a minute that Samsung America would let EDIG say they are developing a product with them if they are not. Every PR is cleared with each party mentioned in them, and those parties have the right of refusal regarding any language that concerns them. This is not the action of a "name dropping wannabe" IMHO. As far as "Japan Inc." goes, e.Digital's agnostic business model allows them to provide similar services to whomever would like them. Of course, I would put Toshiba in that "Japan Inc." group and we are doing work for them already. Neither you nor I can say whether any of the other companies you've named have approached, or will approach, EDIG in order to secure those "convenient" (less time to market) skills that EDIG is exhibiting right now for Samsung and Toshiba. It remains to be seen. Your glass is half empty, mine is half full. Moot argument...
Before you get too hot and bothered about some special 'in' EDIG is supposed to have, step back a few paces and ask yourself this question. You're Dataplay. You've received several million in funding from the top two companies in digital audio - Creative Labs and Sonicblue. You're going to give preferential engineering treatment to some no-name, no product on the market, company at the exclusion of companies who have given you money? Hardly.
Let me assure you I am in no way hot and bothered about anything we're discussing. But to this matter let me simply say that if I'm DataPlay and I come across a no name company with proprietary software which allows my technology to function more efficiently, you better believe I will see how they perform in a variety of instances. Preferential treatment over my investors? Nope. I'd let them try the same things. The fact remains that we have seen working models of DataPlay devices from e.Digital for two of DataPlay's largest OEM's, and we have seen none from SonicBlue or Creative. I'm not saying these two companies won't have DataPlay enabled products on the market, but I AM saying that I believe e.Digital has impressed DataPlay enough to be allowed to develop multiple device platforms. Other companies are welcome to do the same, I'm sure, but e.Digital is the ONLY one we've seen who has performed successfully in the public eye. That success IMHO will lead to contracts and OEM's, which will lead to revenues, which makes my investment successful. That leads to my satisfaction.
a demo does not a successful commercial and unique product make. It helps, but Sentinel, you're making this tremendous leap of faith that because edigital engineering had a day, a week, or even a month, jump on doing engineering on an open-spec product that they are granted some kind of exclusive. Dataplay : small optical drives as Microsoft : graphical user interface software. Just like Microsoft wins by being windows compatible with the entire universe of PCs, Dataplay will, and is, (by looking at their partners page) supplying their spec to a similar universe. Who the heck is edigital? the small scale, little engineering design firm of 40 people? Suggesting that they, in any way, have some kind of lock on this technology is preposterous.
I am in no way making a leap of faith. I also did not say they were granted any type of "exclusive". As I said above, if EDIG's proprietary software allows more efficient DataPlay integration in multiple device platforms, then they will be given business, by both DataPlay and OEM's. Currently DataPlay DOES send OEM's to e.Digital for integration services, so I believe DataPlay at least sees some real value in what e.Digital does. Of course that contributes to the bottom line as both NRE fees and licensing/royalties if resulting products are launched. (Yes, I said "if", because som many factors can affect this OEM decision. As long as EDIG is called upon to do development work with this new technology, I reiterate that the business model is being executed, which is all I ask from a speculative investment vehicle such as this....yes, I'm fully cognizant that EDIG is a speculative investment)
I've noticed a ton of posters on this board are beating the Dataplay drum. It is extremely misleading to potential investors to perpetuate this myth that Dataplay and edigital are locked at the hip in any way that truly matters.
Misinformation abounds. That EDIG and DataPlay share a strong, and potentially very lucrative, business synergy is the product of my DD, and I state that here for anybody's review and use. I don't care about the actions of other posters and I don't care if others agree with me. They do not influence my investment decisions. Every investor should investigate and verify all claims to their own satisfaction.
Creative Labs and Sonicblue actually have products on the market today.
Please post the link to even ONE DataPlay product either of these two companies has on the market today. Just because you've done one thing fairly well in the past, doesn't mean you'll do another thing even adequately in the future. DataPlay is a new technology. While I do not doubt these companies will have DP enabled products on the market at some point, there is no guarantee that these products will be engineered efficiently, have adequate design features or menu options, or will fall within acceptable price points. EDIG is not excluded from success in this market based on the history of these two companies, especially in light of the fact that EDIG is behind the scenes and that their OEM's will be the ones launching and promoting product. Do you think Creative and SonicBlue will compete successfully against Samsung and Toshiba? A little different scenario to be sure.
If Dataplay were proprietary and had an exclusive with EDIG, I'd 2nd mortgage my house to buy EDIG since I think
Dataplay is great technology. Knowing that Creative and RIO will have this technology along with dozens of other
companies, tells me all the Dataplay talk on this board is much ado about nothing.
I'm glad we agree that DataPlay technology stands a good chance of substantial success. We also agree that many companies will be incorporating it into multiple devices. But you keep harping on the "EDIG exclusive" angle, while I am actually very excited about EDIG being in a percentage of future DataPlay products. The type of OEM's we are talking about here (Samsung/Toshiba) will pour on the marketing for their products (developed by EDIG who receives a royalty for each unit sold). Their success is EDIG's success, and they are VERY good at what they do. All this helps the bottom line, which is what I'm here for. So if you don't believe EDIG technology is integral to the whole DataPlay engineering process, so be it. The fact is that DataPlay sends OEM's our way (confirmed by my own DD), and we ARE going to be in at least two DP music players and one storage device, both being offered by heavyweight CE companies. That is no little thing IMHO.
I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for pointing that out. I checked out the website. They do nice work, but they are one of dozens, maybe hundreds of design firms that supply design services to the world of computing and electronic devices. Hardly an exclusive.
There's that darned "exclusive thing" again. Volan is good. They have strong ties to DP and will probably be recommended by DP to some of their OEM's. It's just another way for EDIG to get connected with this technology. Just drop the exclusive stuff and realize a lot of little pieces often equates to one very large piece. It's a matter of percentages.
Yes, I guess you did miss the part about me talking with Robert because I haven't. I believe I have a sufficient understanding of his schtick from all the 'conversations with God' reposts I read on this board to pretty much capture the content of the EDIG pitch. From my reading of these posts he seems to be pretty expert in dodging the tough questions. As good an interegator as I think I am, I doubt he'd be willing to tell me anything but glowing hyperbole, while carefully choosing his words.
I'll not address this again. If you can't be bothered to find out first hand what the "official" answers to your concerns are, especially from someone as accessible as Mr. Putnam, I have no choice but to believe that your DD isn't all that thorough.
The truth is you (nor I) have any idea what that
transaction consists of. Again royalty baring contract claims are meaningless if EDIG makes a few pennies a player.
Hey! Another thing we agree on! Based on my own DD, EDIG is making substantially more than a few pennies per player. Let's just wait for a few quarters, shall we?
You might want to do some due diligence of your own. You'll discover that Samsung also has a healthy mp3 OEM business. Like all Asian conglomorates, they have a wide ammalgamation of various technologies. Until I see a press release issued by Samsung, that talks about their exclusive selection of edigital as a supplier for digital audio products, I'll consider edigital as one of the many component suppliers this large multi-national, deals with.
You are just killin' me with this "exclusive" stuff. I do not maintain that they are the exclusive provider of anything except their own technology, certainly not of something as generic as "digital music products". I'll more or less agree with your last 15 words, EDIG is a supplier of services to this multi-national CE compnay. Of course, only a year ago, even THAT claim would have been greted with derision, so again, I see the business model moving forward.
That is not at all safe to say. It would be safe however to speculate that EDIG may be, especially if they gave their software away for near free (as incentive to stimulate news for more stock trading) a convenient solution to a non-vexing problem.
Consider this public statement from the CEO, a statement governed by SEC reporting rules, no less:
"Per our royalty-bearing agreements announced in January, e.Digital is developing two DataPlay-enabled product
designs for OEM customer Samsung: a PCMCIA Storage device and an MP3 encoder/ multi-codec music player."
OK, so they're not giving the stuff away for free. "Near free"? I don't believe so, but you do. Moot point that can only be resolved when we see solid numbers. We wait.
Probably 'or not'. Don't think I'll waste my time with a likely weasel worded answer.
My posts contain my own paraphrasing. I'm sorry you believe them to be "weasel worded". I invite you to put me on Ignore.
jonvaljon1: I said 'licensed'. Pardon me, I guess I should have said 'saleable and commercially available in the market technology' While Eastech and Maycom may have licensed EDIG technology, there are asbsolutely no products in the market that use that technology. Burned once, sham on you. Burned twice, shame on me. The road is littered with the dead bodies of EDIG licensees and partners who are were going to get their product into the market.
Sentinel: More importantly, if you'll read the Eastech/EDIG Pr, you'll see that EDIG's technology was requested by Eastech's OEM's.
jonvaljon1: Are these OEMs ennumerated? Of course not. "Gleam tooth paste is recommended by five out of ten dentists" Oh yea, what dentists? How big was the sample. Was Colgate also recommended? This is just plain silly. These are empty claims that would make even a weasal embarrassed.
I said the OEM's requested EDIG technology, not recommended it.
"Mr. Liou, Chairman of EASTECH, added, "Based on our OEM customers' interest, we believe we have found a valuable
engineering and design partner in e.Digital. We seek to further support our customers by expanding our licensing agreement with e.Digital and offering their DataPlay-enabled designs to our OEM customers for licensing and private labeling. By strengthening our partnership we believe we will be able to help our private label customers take advantage of sales growth expected in DataPlay-enabled products."
"Mr. Liou, Chairman of EASTECH, added, "e.Digital's jukebox design and expertise in digital product development are
complementary to our business. Together we can offer our OEM customers advanced solutions for their product development and manufacturing needs. Our customers are interested in the latest digital music technology and in incorporating MicroOS/MicroCAM into their product lines."
"EASTECH counts among its customers, global brands such as JBL, Fisher, Harman Kardon, Infinity, Monsoon, Recoton,
TEAC, Emerson, Mission, Denon, Goodmans, Bush, Logitech, Universum, Philips, Sony, Kenwood, Sanyo, Panasonic,
Sharp, Hitachi and Pioneer."
If some of EASTECH's OEM's (and you can probably include Intel in there too now)requested EDIG's technology, and those are some of their OEM's, I feel very good about the future. I'm sorry you see rodentia everywhere. Time heals all.
Just think what would happen IF edigital cut a bad P & L business deal designed to stimulate stock trading activity. I'm not saying they did, but 'what if'? We won't really know will we until we get good industry data - and that is at least 3 quarters away, that helps match up player shipments with rev reported through 10Q reports. Then, and only then will we know if edigital is a 50 cent or a 5 dollar component of any product that happens to get into the market. Until then I guess we don't know what kind of business model EDIG employs. My due diligence shows me that Samsung has not issued a PR on any business claimed to exist with EDIG. All I have is EDIG claims, and these claims have a very poor track record.
The "what if" argument doesn't interest me. No basis for supposition and far too much potential for "spin". No thanks. We agree yet again that 3 quarters or so from now is a good time to evaluate the company. Your idea of a very poor track record certainly differs from mine, though you are correct that Samsung has not issued any official announcement. Again, EDIG's PR's are subject to review by all parties concerned, so if you choose to believe that Samsung is allowing them to lie, so be it. For the record, Mr. Putnam has stated that informationabout the review of PRs by mentioned parties, and I believe him. If you want to argue that he lied to me and that EDIG is breaking SEC rules by willfully issuing incorrect information, take it up with the SEC. That arguement holds no water, and is patently absurd IMHO.
Until I see a Samsung issued press release, I'll perceive EDIG to be one of the hundreds of companies that supply components that may consist of little more than pieces of software, to a vast array of products coming out of Samsung. Again, I'd encourage you to do a bit of due
diligence of your own and discover how many products Samsung has already OEM'd in the past for other companies,
apparently without EDIG assistance.
Samsung is using e.Digital to develop DataPlay enabled devices. I tried and tried to do some due diligence and research all related DataPlay devices Samsung has OEM'd without EDIG's help. I failed. Couldn't find any. This is a new technology, not related to just any "digital music device" OEM'd previously. I'd appreciate it if you'd help me out and provide a link to any commercially available DataPlay device Samsung has already launched...Now if you are saying that because Samsung has been quite successful in the past with their products, and probably will be with their DataPlay offerings, I can only agree with you and hope we are right. As EDIG's OEM are successful, so goes EDIG.
As EDIG ran up to $24 whopping dollars, it did so quite independent of any real solid underlying technology foundation didn't it? ....Can it do it again perhaps so your goal can be achieved?...Quite possibly. And if you take your money off the table at the right time, how will you feel about the poor suckers left holding the bag if reality fails to equal hype?
It is universally agreed, I think, that daytraders and past market conditions were the impetus behind EDIG's meteoric rise. Can it do it again? Possibly is accurate IMHO. You have no idea what my goals or financial needs or wants are, and I have no intention of discussing them with you. I will say that I plan to hold a sizeable (for me)position for years, and that I believe the company has significant upside potential that if may realize in that timeframe. I will also say that there is no "hype" if there is adequate DD. I feel poorly for anybody in any investment who relies on others' words (including but not limited to yours, longtooth's, DABOSS' and mine) as a replacement for firsthand DD. These people should be in mutual funds. This is not an e.Digital related situation.
Broadcom and Set-Top Boxes. Thoughts on this?

BusinessWire, 06/11/2001 09:31
Scientific-Atlanta and Broadcom Collaborate in the Development of Dual-Channel MPEG-2 Encoder Chip for `Watch & Record' Set-Top Boxes
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 2001--Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq:BRCM) the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, today introduced a dual-channel MPEG-2 encoder chip for next generation personal video recorder (PVR) set-top boxes. The Broadcom(R) BCM7041 dual-channel, digital video/audio encoder and multiplexer is the first single-chip, MPEG-2 encoder to enable the simultaneous compression of two independent video channels and four audio channels.
The BCM7041 supports MPEG-2 video encoding, program/transport stream multiplexing, and MPEG-1 /Dolby Digital AC-3 audio encoding standards. The BCM7041 was developed by Broadcom's Israel design team, formerly with Visiontech Ltd., which was acquired by Broadcom in January 2001.
"Scientific-Atlanta's foresight to offer integrated PVR and dual-channel capabilities in set-top boxes presented a unique convergence opportunity and primary technology development driver for the design team," said Amir Morad, General Manager of Broadcom Israel.
Dual tuner set-top boxes equipped with the BCM7041 will allow the consumer to record one program while watching and time-shifting a different program, or to record two different programs simultaneously that may be viewed later or at the same time within picture-in-picture (PIP). In addition, the viewer may record an interactive show and be able to take advantage of these interactive capabilities at a later time. The BCM7041 offers viewers greater control over the TV-viewing experience, enabling them to freeze a live TV program, instantly replay or rewind a program, or skip ahead in a recorded program to a favorite movie scene or the next big play of a sporting event. The PVR capability can also be used to store the viewer's program preferences and record similar shows for future viewing.
"The need for dual MPEG encoding is becoming a requirement from all MSOs to support `watch and record' PVR. The BCM7041 dual channel encoder is a significant milestone in the evolution of the PVR set-top box market," said Rich Nelson, Sr. Director of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Business Unit. "The BCM7041's ability to simultaneously encode two channels of video and four channels of audio in one chip makes it the most cost-effective solution for the cable industry to offer wide-scale deployment of `watch and record' digital set-top boxes to the consumer."
Scientific-Atlanta will incorporate Broadcom's BCM7041 into its new Explorer 8000 set-tops enabling real-time compression of analog channels. Together with Scientific-Atlanta's interactive television navigator, the encoder will provide the ability to compress two digitized video and four audio streams simultaneously that can be `watched and recorded,' simply recorded or simultaneously played back in a PIP. Having shipped six million Explorer set-tops, Scientific-Atlanta brings the interactive experience home to the consumer.
"PVR enabled set top boxes could become the next ubiquitous subscriber video recording device," says Michael P. Harney, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Scientific-Atlanta's Subscriber Networks Sector. "Broadcom's advanced dual channel MPEG2 encoder, when added to Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer set-tops, will enable subscribers to watch what they want, when they want, and let our customers provide an integrated revenue producing platform at the same time."
According to Forrester Research, digital video recorder sales are expected to reach 53 million units by 2005, which they claim makes it the fastest growing segment in personal technology.
The Explorer 8000 is a powerful member of Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer family and is expected to deliver a wide range of multiple interactive TV applications through a single set-top. In addition to Web browsing, email, t-commerce, and video-on-demand (VOD), the Explorer 8000 model also delivers personal TV capabilities that allow the cable subscriber to re-play live analog and digital TV programs using a built-in 40 gigabyte hard drive. This innovative set-top will also enable the simultaneous viewing and recording of two channels of programming and support HDTV via memory options.
The BCM7041 chip is packaged in a 256 BGA and costs $50 in 10,000-piece quantities. Sample quantities of the BCM7041 are available today as is the BMC97041 reference design with a sample application and software drivers. Broadcom is demonstrating these products at the National Cable Television Association's Cable 2001 tradeshow this week in Chicago.

MPMAN, DataPlay in digital music alliance
MPMAN.Com, a domestic MP3 player maker, said yesterday it has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with DataPlay Inc. a U.S. digital music content business firm, for joint development and marketing.
Under the agreement, DataPlay will provide its technology, including micro-optical engines that store and play optical disks, to be integrated into MPMAN's portable players.
MPMAN's products will be installed with the U.S. firm's tool for content distribution, marketing and e-commerce.
MPMAN's hardware will also use DataPlay's digital media format and feature pre-recorded contents, which the company plans to secure through copyright agreement with recording firms such as Universal Music and EMI.
DataPlay's digital media format allows access to all forms of digital content across all digital devices and platforms, including images, documents, software, games and video, MPMAN said.
The two companies have already developed jointly a digital audio player, showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
MPMAN. Com obtained a patent for its technology to retrieve sound on MP3 music players from the Korean Intellectual Property Office in January.

E-Mail from RP...
I do not normally bother RP with emails. If I have a question I call. However, I wanted to see what the response would be if I asked about the major news drought lately. His response came back in less than 15 minutes, and although I am pretty sure it was pre-sritten, its nice to get a reply so quickly.
Hi, xxxxx,
With the next generation of consumer electronics products just beginning to
come out, we believe we have positioned e.Digital in the mainstream of
opportunity with our technology, standards support, product platforms, OEM
partners and customers, and business model. With the assistance of
Fleishman Hillard, we are coordinating our efforts with industry analysts,
members of the media and our OEM customers and their public relations
staffs in preparing and disseminating announcements and information. While
the exact timeframes of announcements and product availability are mainly
controlled by our OEM customers, we expect developments based on our
HDD-based portable digital jukebox platform, DataPlay-enabled devices and
other platforms to be announced. Specifically, based on current information
provided by our OEM customers and OEM licensees, we anticipate availability
of consumer products based on our HDD-based digital jukebox platform in
retail distribution channels this quarter.
Samsung, Toshiba and other OEM customers are expected to market
DataPlay-based, e.Digital-enabled devices later this year when DataPlay's
optical storage technology is scheduled to become widely available. We
expect more information regarding these developments to be forthcoming.
We have dedicated strategic engineering resources to the development and
implementation of new product platforms that include digital video for
portable devices, automotive and home stereo designs, voice navigation, and
set-top boxes. We are working with multiple OEMs on specific applications
of these and other MicroOS- and MicroCAM-powered platforms for inclusion in
a variety of branded products.
We continue to ship Cquence Mobile products to Lanier Healthcare and expect
to have more information regarding this released this quarter.
Please e-mail me or call me on my direct line at 858.679.3168 if I can be
of further assistance. We appreciate your continued support, xxxx.
Best regards,
Robert Putnam
Senior Vice President

Napster a BMG - máme plán!
Velká to slova!
Podporuje digitální ochranu autorských práv WMA Digital Rights Management a InterTrust, hudbu si mùžete poslechnout ve formátech MP3, WMA, AAC a ePAC.

Here's the Bloomberg story via AOL.
Intel to Order MP3 Audio Players From Eastern Asia, Paper Says
Taipei, May 2 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the largest maker of computer processors, plans to order NT$2 billion ($61 million) worth of so-called MP3 audio players from Eastern Asia Technology Ltd., the Economic Daily News reported, citing the company.
Intel may order 600,000 music players based on the MP3 digital audio signal compression standard from Eastern Asia, with shipments to start in August. Eastern Asia will supply Intel with six different models priced at between $80 and $200 each, the report said.
Eastern Asia is a Singapore-listed maker of speaker systems with shares traded as depositary receipts in Taiwan, making it the second foreign company to publicly trade on the island.
