Amazon.com Inc's decision to use a processor made by Texas Instruments Inc for its newest Kindle Fire tablets has surprised some investors and experts who thought Nvidia Inc's Tegra 3 chip would be tapped for the high-profile device.
At an event in Santa Monica, California on Thursday, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said TI's OMAP 4470 chip is being used in the new, higher-end Kindle Fire.
He showed reporters graphs suggesting the OMAP chip has better bandwidth and computing power than Nvidia's top mobile component.
"This is a huge surprise," said Evercore analyst Patrick Wang. "Most people assumed Tegra 3 would be the processor in the new device."

Proof of Amazon’s New Kindle Fire in One Week

It’s widely expected that Amazon will drop Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN ) for the tablet’s processing brains, and that NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA ) has scored that seat with its quad-core Tegra 3 chip -- the same one powering the Nexus 7. The display should get upgraded from the current 1024 x 600, and match the Nexus 7’s resolution of 1280 x 800. We may see a camera added, while the first-generation model lacked one. Unlike Apple’s supply chain, which is full of leaks, not much else is known about Amazon’s new device.
Mellanox Technologies Ltd. (MLNX), the Israeli maker of technology used to transfer and store data, increased 2.2 percent to $116.8. Its shares in Tel Aviv advanced 1.5 percent to 463.9 shekels, or $115.62.
The company will be added to the MSCI Standard Index and removed from the MSCI Small Cap Index at the end of the month, a move that may result in net inflows of $120 million, according to a report from Clal Finance dated yesterday.

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — The youngest juror, a 24-year-old whose favorite court attire was T-shirts bearing names of rock bands, chose a Beatles sweatshirt for Friday's dramatic unveiling of the $1.05 billion verdict in favor of computer titan Apple Inc. One of the oldest was a retired electrical engineer who, as foreman, signed the unanimous verdict that Samsung Electronics Co. copied Apple's patented technology for the iPhone and iPad. Among the other seven jurors were a homemaker, a bicycle shop manager and a U.S. Navy veteran.
---------
Deliberations in the Apple v. Samsung battle were far more challenging than most. The jury was confronted with hundreds of questions on a 20-page verdict form that was more complicated than a U.S. tax return. They had in the jury room more than two dozen electronic devices at issue, 12 patents to decipher and 109-pages of instructions from the judge on rendering a verdict.
"This case is unmanageable for a jury," Robin Feldman, an intellectual property professor at the University of California Hastings Law School, said before the verdict. "There are more than 100 pages of jury instructions. I don't give that much reading to my law students. They can't possible digest it."
"The trial is evidence of a patent system that is out of control," Feldman said. "No matter what happens in this trial, I think people will need to step back and ask whether we've gone too far in the intellectual property system."

Nvidia lands orders for at least 3 million Tegra 3 chips for Nexus 7
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Friday 3 August 2012]
Nvidia has obtained orders for at least three million Tegra 3 chips for use in Nexus 7 tablet PCs and at least 3-4 million units of the tablet will be shipped through the end of 2012, according to supply chain makers.
Since each Tegra 3 is priced at about US$25, Nvidia will earn revenues close to US$75 million just through its Nexus 7 orders in the second half with profits from the orders to reach US$10 million. With the addition of other Tegra 3 orders, the income is expected to help cover its weakening performance in the graphics chip business.
Google's low price strategy of US$199-249 for its Nexus 7 tablet PC has strongly attracted consumers, allowing Nvidia to be able to quickly recover in the ARM-based processor market.

great nuggets all through this call:
"Hi, Glenn Hanus at Needham. Can you talk a little bit about -- I mean you've raised the third quarter here very significantly, you know, the drivers of that? Are there a number of, you know, you had I think you said five to seven significant HPC deals for the June quarter, are there a whole group coming here in the September quarter, is that the primary driver the upside? And then should we -- how far are we in this HPC upgrade cycle to 56 as we go -- as we think about our models for December then, the December quarter, should we think in terms of there having been a lot of one-time business in the September quarter or should we think about growth again sequentially in the December quarter? Thank you.
Eyal Waldman
Sure. So we can't give you any guidance for the December quarter. Regarding Q3, yes, there are a number of large deals as we had in Q1 and in Q2, we also have a number in Q3, which we’re happy to see continuous flow for those deals with our InfiniBand interconnect. And the HPC market continues to deploy. It's not like there's a certain amount of super-computers being built and most of them are being built in the first half. It's like every -- we already are working on and know of super-computers that will be built in 2014, 2015 and 2016 that people are working out with us. And so there's a continuous flow of super-computers to be built in the next coming two or three years that we already are aware of."
Also can't believe you're practially the only other poster!
LOL! I picked up on MLNX awhile ago after something was referenced about the company on a Bloomberg tv segment.
Sweet.
Qualcomm Announces Third Quarter Fiscal 2012 Results
Revenues $4.6 Billion
GAAP EPS $0.69, Non-GAAP EPS $0.85
"Adoption of 3G and 3G/4G technologies continues around the world, driving strong year-over-year growth in our chipset and licensing businesses this quarter," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. "Looking forward, our growth estimates for 3G/4G device shipments in calendar 2012 have moderated slightly, and we now expect the demand profile of the calendar year to be more back-end loaded as new devices are launched for the holiday season. Although our outlook for semiconductor volumes in the fiscal fourth quarter has been reduced from our prior expectations, we are ramping supply of our 28 nanometer chipsets to help enable what we expect to be a strong December quarter for our semiconductor business."

Intel Q2 in Line, Q3 Rev View Light, By Tiernan Ray
Intel (INTC) this afternoon reported Q2 revenue in line with expectations and and earnings per share slightly better than expected.
Revenue in the three months ended in June rose to $13.5 billion, yielding EPS of 54 cents, on a GAAP basis. Excluding some costs, Intel reported 57 cents a share.
Analysts on average had been expecting $13.54 billion and 52 cents a share.
For the current quarter, the company sees $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion in revenue. At the midpoint, $14.3 billion, that projection is below the current $14.58 billion estimate.
For the full year, the company cut its revenue growth outlook to a range of 3% to 5%, versus a prior range for “high-single-digit” growth, year over year.
CEO Paul Otellini remarked, “As we enter the third quarter, our growth will be slower than we anticipated due to a more challenging macroeconomic environment. With a rich mix of Ultrabook and Intel-based tablet and phone introductions in the second half, combined with the long-term investments we’re making in our product and manufacturing areas, we are well positioned for this year and beyond.”

Mobile phone firms back Mozilla Firefox rival to Android
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/02/telecoms-firefox-idUSL6E8I2A8V20120702
HELSINKI, July 2 (Reuters) - A new operating system for mobile phones akin to the Mozilla Firefox internet browser has got the backing of several major telecom companies, turning up the heat on Google and Apple in the smartphone market.
Mozilla said on Monday that mobile network operators Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, Smart, Telecom Italia , Telenor and Etisalat are backing the Firefox platform.
The non-profit organisation which evolved from Netscape after the internet browser wars 14 years ago, said phone makers ZTE and TCL Communication Technology will roll out the first Firefox OS phones using Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors in early 2013.
"Global demand for solid state drives (SSDs) continues to explode, and OCZ is the largest independent player in the sector. We believe OCZ could continue to post rapidly growing revenues, expanding margins and secularly improving bottom line results in the quarters ahead."
Achramowicz currently covers OCZ with a Buy rating and a price target of $11.50.

This involved Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder, jumping on stage wearing the device and engaging in a live video chat on Google’s social network with a couple of wing-suited sky divers as they jumped out of a plane. They were followed by stunt bikers and rappellers who dropped down the face of the Moscone West convention center, all the while sharing what they were seeing through experimental versions of the glasses.
Mr. Brin said Google would make a $1,500 prototype of the glasses — which it calls the Google Glass Explorer Edition — available to developers from the United States who attended the conference. He said the glasses were slated to ship early next year.
